Scriptures for us. In our participation in the breaking of the bread which we call the Mass our eyes too
will be opened. We too are enabled to recognize the
presence of the Lord in the breaking of the bread.
• Though nature’s springtime is slow in blooming, the
springtime of our Church year is in full flower this
weekend! Welcome to the children who are receiving
their First Communion on Saturday. Welcome to your
parents, godparents, relatives and friends. Many
thanks to our dedicated catechists and helpers who
have assisted
the second graders in appreciating the presence
of the Lord in
our celebration of
the Eucharist.

on us with a pleasant day and sunshine!
• Two race horses in their stables were sharing their
experiences on the track. One said, “You know in the
last race I felt a pinch in my hindquarters.” The
other horse said, “Funny, I felt a pinch in my hindquarters before the race I won.” A dog walked by
and said, “You idiots. You are being doped by being
injected with a drug that makes you run faster.” The
first horse turned and said to the other horse,
“Hey, a talking dog!”

• And some of our more mature plants will be
“budding out” this weekend! Congratulations to the
youth of our parish and our neighbors from Good
Shepherd who will be confirmed in the faith. We
welcome your families and relatives coming to pray
with you for the outpouring of the gifts of the Holy
Spirit. It warms my heart when I see our young people taking an active role in the liturgy. It inspires me
when I hear stories from mission trips and youth
outreach. Your confirmation in the Spirit strengthens our community of faith and brings hope to our
world, longing for the peace of the Risen Lord.

• The section of the gospel we proclaim this Third
Sunday of Easter is one of the most fascinating accounts of the appearances of the Risen Lord. The
two disciples on the road to Emmaus are so overcome with grief that they do not recognize the
Risen Lord walking with them. And what a sense of
humor the Lord shows in the dialogue! The disciples
ask him, “Are you the only one that does not know
the things that happened these past days?” In all
naiveté The Lord say, “What sort of things?”

• The door is open for The Lord to help them understand the Scriptures at that point to a Messiah that
serves, suffers, dies and rises. The climax for the
disciples to come to a deeper faith is when He took
the bread, said the blessing, broke it, and gave it to
them. “Then their eyes were opened!”

St. James’ Weekly Tithes (Outreach)
Since the 1980’s St. James has distributed a portion
of its weekly income as a tithe for various outreach
programs and organizations. This past week $425

FUNERAL ACOLYTES
When a death occurs the grieving family
often turns to the Church for comfort and consolation especially through the prayers and rituals of our funeral services.
St. James provides an exceptional bereavement ministry at the time of
a funeral. Many individuals contribute to making the funeral service
go smoothly through a ministry of love and compassion.
While the greeters, choir, and luncheon committee function
as a group, there is one position that operates as a singular function
and that is the funeral acolyte or server. The acolyte prepares the
items used for the funeral service and Mass: lighting candles, preparing the bread and wine, having the holy water and pall in place,
and generally assisting the priest during the Mass. In addition the
acolyte prepares the incense used in the service. The assistance of an
acolyte is essential to making a funeral service run smoothly so that
everyone can participate in undistracted prayer. We are grateful to
those who serve in this ministry. There are opportunities for more to
serve in this ministry.
Funerals are celebrated weekday mornings or evenings, and
Saturday mornings (never on Sunday.) Acolytes are always “on call”
as there is no long term scheduling for funerals. Being an acolyte is
indeed a special privilege and honor. It is a sacred and holy task to
minister at the altar and to serve the bereaved. Will you please consider responding to this opportunity to serve, to acolyte at our funeral

Matthew 25 Service Project Experiences
Parishioners who sought a deeper Lenten experience, took cards
from the purple draped cross that was located in the back of the
church. The cards suggested a service project and asked parishioners to share a reflection from their experience. Here are two
of them:
“As a family, my sisters, my mom, and I put together five Easter
baskets for homebound Seniors. So each of us five ladies with
our own immediate family put together a basket. We all enjoyed shopping and really thought about what these seniors
would enjoy and really needed. It felt good spending time as a
family putting someone else first, and doing something for others. It was a great call of service and the baskets look
great! We hope to make them a little extra happy this Easter.”

Serving Milwaukee’s Hungry
For the past several years, we’ve advertised the St Ben’s Run/
Walk for the Hungry, Friday, July 25th at 7 pm. The event is
now a combined Run/Walk for the Capuchins’ and their two
Milwaukee organizations:
St Ben’s Meal Program and the House of Peace. This year
we’d also like to organize a Team from St James where we’d
get our team name on our T-Shirts and a Team Discount.
Another parishioner placed a note in one of the Rice Bowls
which said: “On May 4 I will help sell soap/bath products after
the 10:30 am mass.” Thanks and have a great day!
If you too, took a card from the cross during Lent and performed some type of service to others and you wanted to share
your experience, please write a short note and place it in the
basked on the Great Room’s fireplace ledge.

archdiocesan Reach Out Reach In week—July 13-18, 2014. We

A Note from our Parish Nurse, Pam Dennis:
Walk your way to fitness, that is our goal as
spring approaches here at St. James. Start
slowly if you have not been exercising regularly. Don’t be discouraged if you can’t walk
30 minutes your first time out. It’s OK to start
slowly. Keep in mind that as you increase your
physical effort, your body will respond by improving its capacity for exercise. To condition
your heart and lungs safely, consider these three factors: intensity, frequency and duration.
What is a desirable intensity for you? Here are two simple
tools to help you find out: Talk test. Can you carry on a conversation with a companion while you walk? If you can’t,
you’re probably pushing too hard. Slow your pace. Perceived
exertion. Perceived exertion refers to the total amount of effort, physical stress and fatigue you experience during an activity. Aim for a moderate intense level of activity.
Frequency and duration are important factors also. As a general goal, aim for daily physical activity. Remember, the more
you walk, the greater the benefits. It is okay to even start with
five minutes a day the first week, and then increase your time
by five minutes each week until you reach your goal.

If you would like company, we have started a walking group
here at St. James. We will be walking every Wednesday at
beginning at 9 am in front of the Community Center doors on
the east side of the church, by the picnic table. We will stretch
for 5 minutes before and after our walk and walk over at the
mobile park for 30 minutes. Join us for some fellowship and
exercise!

No collections on Memorial Day, May 26th.
We will accept almost everything. However, there are a few exceptions:
NO computer equipment, TVs (except flat screen), or large appliances.
No magazines, encyclopedias, baby cribs, car seats or mattresses.
No large exercising equipment, or skis
We welcome all clean, useable items including furniture – big and small, indoor and outdoor, (we
can arrange for pickup of large items for a small fee) lamps, pictures, sporting goods, housewares,
bedding, linens, seasonal items, toys and tools. Clean, gently used clothing, jewelry, antiques,
craft items, records, CDs, DVDs, etc. and books.
To accommodate everyone’s schedules the drop-off times are:
Monday through Friday: 7:30 am–5:00 pm
SATURDAY: 8:30 am–12:00 pm and WEDNESDAY EVE 5:00-7:30 pm.
