Continuing the tradition
Franciscan Sisters provide care and faith
The presence of Catholic nuns has always been a
treasured hallmark of Our Lady of Peace Home. For
decades it was the Dominican Sisters of Hawthorne.
Today, under the operation of the Franciscan Health
Community, four nuns from the Franciscan Clarist
Congregation live and serve at Our Lady.
Two of the Franciscan Sisters have been here for nine
years – Sister Polsyand Sister Jenny – and two others
joined them last year – Sister Metty andthe baby of
the group, Sister Shergy. Their gentle, smiley ways
enhance the peaceful atmosphere at Our Lady, while
their steadfast faith advances the hospice’s cherished
Catholic heritage.
The Franciscan Clarist Congregation was founded in
1888 in Changanacherry, a town in the Indian state of
Kerala. All four of the Franciscans at Our Lady are from
India and speak their native Malayalam to each other
and English to staff and patients. They keep in touch
with relatives back home through Skype and email.
Their congregation was formed around prayer, hard
work, service to the poor and education. Its motto,
“To holiness through lowliness,” is embodied by the
Sisters’ humble demeanor.
Being at Our Lady is ideal for their call “to help the
need and poor and sick, for the love of Jesus,” said
Sister Metty.
“[It’s] perfect mission work here,” Sister Jenny agreed.
“Patients, families – we stay by their side and pray.”
Added Sister Shergy, “We’re very happy to be with
them.”
Their service at Our Lady brings a welcome continuity
following the Dominicans. Sister Polsy and Sister
Jenny worked closely with the Dominican Sisters

before their departure and came to admire them.
“They were very kind,” Sister Jenny said. “They were
very helpful.”
Sister Polsy echoed that praise. “They were so
generous and hard working.” By remaining at Our
Lady, thanks to the Franciscan Health Community,
Sister Polsy said she believes they are continuing an
important tradition. And, she’s quick to add, she and
the other Sisters feel very welcome. “Many people
love the Sisters’ service here.”
Sister Metty agreed, pointing out that visitors regularly
ask for hugs and prayers. “They’re so appreciative.”
Frequent prayer
Prayer is a cornerstone of their lives. From 5:45 a.m. to
6:45 a.m., while patients sleep, the Sisters participate
in Eucharistic Adoration in Our Lady’s chapel. Then
they attend Mass. During the school year, they walk
to the 7 a.m. service at the University of St. Thomas.
Later in the day they devote themselves to a private
hour of meditation. And as a community they pray the
Liturgy of the Hours. The patients at Our Lady are a
daily petition.

Being with someone nearing death is a profoundly spiritual
experience, the Sisters say, and they’re honored to participate in
those sacred moments, holding their hands and praying with them
during that send-off to heaven.
“You stay with them,” Sister Shergy said. “It’s not so much about
what you say or do, just about being there.
Some Our Lady patients nearing death have seen a glimpse of
heaven and remarked on it before dying, the Sisters said. One
opened her eyes and said, “That’s amazing!” Another said, “Mary
and Jesus, hold my hand – I go now!”
“There are also patients who say they see their [late] parents,” Sister
Polsy said. “Faith and trust in God, that is the reason.”
The Sisters’ presence at Our Lady is cherished. “There’s a certain peace
here, it probably has a lot to do with the Sisters,” said volunteer Sam
Netherly. “It’s like a giant prayer factory.”
Memorial Brick Patio Dedicated
Two years ago Our Lady of Peace Home applied for and received a matching grant from the city of St. Paul to
re-landscape our property. Through the generosity of donors like The Wasie Foundation (see page 13), we were
able to match those funds and complete the work.
Part of our plan was to tear down an old wood structure on the
property and install a brick memorial patio where people could
purchase a brick to remember a loved one who had passed away
at Our Lady of Peace Home or elsewhere, to honor someone
dear to them. The idea took off, as more than 350 bricks were
sold in the initial offering and the patio was built in an attractive
basket-weave pattern.
More than 300 people attended a June 21 ceremony to dedicate
the new Memorial Brick Patio Garden. Music, speeches and
refreshments made for a great event that was enjoyed by all.
The staff spoke about what it means to work at a wonderful and
caring place with a compassionate team of professionals. Each
staff person also shared a personal story of loss in his or her
own life as well. The event ended with Evan Johnson playing Amazing Grace on the bagpipes.
Thank you to all the family members and friends who came to help dedicate the patio. . It is open every day for
people to come and visit for a few moments in quiet remembrance.
The bricks cost $150 and are engraved with the name of the person being remembered. For more information on

second Annual Luncheon
for Our Lady of Peace Home
On a windy May 17, more than 370 people blew
into the Prom Center in Oakdale for the 2nd Annual
Friends of Our Lady Fundraising Luncheon. The event
was another huge success, raising more than $60,000
for the home. Many of the people who attended last
year’s event returned to again support the mission
of Our Lady of Peace Home, joined by many new
attendees as well.

The
documentary
portrays several patients and their families experiences during
their stay here. The video is dedicated to Ricki Gale,
Marlys Armstrong, Tony Grundy, Stanley Jamison and
Eric Stechmann, who shared their final days with us to
help tell our story.
“We had 33 gracious volunteers who agreed to serve
as table hosts for the event,” said Mike Randall,
director of development. “They did an amazing job of
inviting friends to join them at the event to learn more
about the wonderful work being done at Our Lady.”
Long time volunteer Stephen Geis shared the history
of the home along with many stories of his entire
family’s involvement and dedication to volunteering
at Our Lady. Stephen’s late father, LeRoy, was a doctor
who cared for patients at Our Lady. He used to bring
his entire family along to volunteer, and the tradition
stuck. Stephen’s mother, Dorothy, and many members
of the Gleis clan attended the luncheon.

Year-End Celebration of Life Remembers
Loved Ones With Stars
On the first Sunday of December, Our Lady of Peace Home celebrates the lives of the many people who have
passed through our doors. Our Celebration of Life Event allows family members and friends to purchase a star
on our Christmas tree bearing the name of the person they wish to remember or honor.
Last year more than 350 stars adorned our tree in the chapel. Donors
use the opportunity to remember loved ones who have passed away
at Our Lady, or elsewhere, or to honor someone still living who is dear
to them. The names are put on a gold star that is then hung on the
tree displayed in our chapel. The day also includes an open house
where family members and friends are invited to return to the home
and reconnect with our staff.
“The Celebration of Life is such a nice event,” said Mike Randall,
director of development. “On the one hand, there is a festive feeling
with people sharing memories of loved ones with our staff while
enjoying Christmas cookies and refreshments. Yet upon entering the
chapel, you are overwhelmed by the powerful sense of reflection that
exists as family members find their loved one’s star or view their name on the PowerPoint display. It’s a mixture
of peace, emotions and soothing music. It’s difficult not to be moved.”

Harp Music Soothing to Patients
Jennifer Wilson understands the power of music to
transport someone to another time or place – before
cancer.
“There’s that trail down to Lake Superior,” she said
after the final chord of “Forest Stroll,” a sunny Celtic
melody, rang out from her cherry lever harp. “The
North Shore is my favorite travel spot. Everybody’s
got to go there once.”
“Can I join you?” piped in Jean McNeally, a patient
who was relishing Jennifer’s music one Monday
morning in August.
Jennifer played a medley of tunes, from “Scarborough
Fair” to “My Little Welsh Home,” while Jean relaxed,
gazing contentedly out her window. Each strum of
the harp soothed.
“Boy, that sounds good!” Jean exclaimed after the
first song.
After a handful more, Jennifer checked in. “Have you
had enough for today or would you like a little more?”
“A little more,” Jean responded.
Jean McNeally enjoys a Celtic melody played by
Jennifer Wilson. “Boy, that sounds good!” she
remarked.
“For me, it’s a ministry,” she said. “I see that it’s
making a difference. And it’s such a privilege to be
able to walk a part of this path with someone. I know
I’ll never play for an orchestra – but isn’t this cool, to
just go in and play at the bedside!”
The St. Paul native who lives in Hugo retired in 2008,
having worked as dean of a Missouri nursing college.
She has always appreciated music and has a gentle
way of interacting with patients, who most often
request “Amazing Grace.”
Jennifer studied the art of playing harp at bedside
through an online program called Heart of God
Harpers taught by Joanna Mell, a certified therapeutic
harpist. “She would say, ‘Be the love of Jesus to them,
whether or not they know,’” Jennifer recalled.
Harp music can release stress and lessen the
perception of pain, said Jennifer Wilson.
Jennifer learned to play harp six years ago and has
been volunteering at Our Lady of Peace Home for
nearly two years, carrying her binder of songs and
sliding her harp room to room every Monday morning.

Listening to the harp can have various benefits, she
understands. “It’s been demonstrated that music can
lower blood pressure and do all sorts of good things
physiologically. It can be healing in terms of providing
peace, a rest, maybe a release of some stress or
tension. I’ve also seen it lessen the perception of
pain. It’s not taking the place of medication, but it can
help make a person more comfortable. I tell people,
‘Go ahead, fall asleep.’”
Volunteer Profile
Tuesdays With Sasha
It was love at first sight when Sam Netherly bought his
furry Samoyed, Sasha, back in 2003, but it wasn’t until
2007, when his younger daughter became critically ill,
that he imagined a broader purpose for his beloved pet.
His daughter, Alex, was staying at Region’s hospital
when Sam’s wife spotted a fluffy white pooch making
its way down the hall and insisted it visit her daughter.
Not only was it a fellow Samoyed, but it was also
named Sasha and, they soon learned – a half sister to
their own dog at home, sharing the same legendary
breeder, John Donner. The dog climbed onto Alex’s
bed and sat on her legs, a simple act that brought
tremendous comfort.

something arctic and even mystical about her face.
It’s not just her appearance but her aura, her ability to
read and respond to people. “She works her magic,”
Sam said. “She will get people to turn right angles
to whatever it is they’re facing. They completely lose
track of whatever it was that was troubling them.”
Alex went on to make a full recovery, while Sam
started thinking about bringing other ill patients the
same solace through his own Sasha. He was nearing
retirement after a successful 34-year career at 3M,
during which he had developed nine patents, working
most recently as a product development specialist.
“I thought: retirement, alright, what am I going to do
with myself?” said Sam, 63, who lives in Afton, Minn.
Even before he’d set the date, he had decided to
train Sasha as a therapy dog.
She took to it immediately, much to Sam’s amazement.
“She understood where she was, what was going
on,” he said, pointing to her alert brown eyes during
a recent visit to Our Lady of Peace Home. “This is her
game face. Her eyes don’t glow like that at home.”
The two-foot tall, 70-pound dog, who is now 9, has
been paying regular visits to Our Lady for three years.
She comes on Tuesdays and delights the patients.
“Get a fuzz fix,” Sam told a woman in a wheelchair as
Sasha sauntered down the hall.

to see me,” Denise said of the fluffy Samoyed.
Sam has witnessed a number of such turns: lowering
a person’s blood pressure, curing a headache, even
reaching someone already in a coma. Once, for
instance, Kathryn Wornson, vice president for home
care and end-of-life-care, urged Sam to visit a dying
patient who had owned a Samoyed as a young mother.
When Sasha arrived, the woman was unconscious, but
Sam took her hand and ran it through Sasha’s coat,
and the woman began to moan in apparent joy or
happiness. “I’m convinced that was her last memory,”
Sam said. “She passed early the next morning.”
“I look forward to her coming in to see me,” said
Denise Kern, who received a big, wet kiss from Sasha
and then invited her onto her bed, happily petting
her. “It feels so good.”
The retiree encourages others to get involved at Our
Lady, sharing whatever special offering they can. “It’s
tremendously rewarding to volunteer here,” he said.
“I get more gratitude in one day doing this than I did
in 35 years at 3M.”
It is therapeutic to sink your hands into a Samoyed’s
long, silky coat. “At least one person a week will say she’s
the most beautiful dog they’ve ever seen,” Sam said.

Patient Profile
The Same Room, 5 Years Later
As Larry Schreiner neared the end of his battle with
cancer, he was given a unique gift – being drawn
closer to his late wife, Jean, by spending his final
weeks of life in the same room that she had occupied
at Our Lady of Peace Home five years earlier.
It was a coincidence that Larry was placed into
room 207C when he arrived at Our Lady, the same
assigned bed where his wife had stayed back when
it was a female floor run by the Dominican Sisters of
Hawthorne. The 88-year-old cradle Catholic said he
welcomed the proximity.

wasn’t the only surprise. He also discovered a familiar
painting on the wall: a watercolor of three white lilies
popping out from a rainbow-streaked background
painted by Sharon. She had given it to Our Lady back
when her mother was staying there. It has remained in
the entrance of room 207, and Larry admired it from
his bed.
He and his six children found themselves recalling
Jean’s seven-week stay here, which included a 4th of
July celebration and her birthday.
“Half a dozen people have said, ‘Doesn’t that sort of
freak you out?’” Larry said. “I say, ‘Maybe it’s because
I’m on the right path.’”
“She always said she wanted to be here,” Larry said.
“I always say she had a good death. What else can I
ask? I receive fantastic care here.”
His daughter Sharon recounted the surprise of
landing in 207 C again. “We were being walked up to
the room and we were like, ‘Oh, I can’t believe this!’ It
really felt like coming home.”
“She liked that it was a Catholic institution,” added
his daughter Cynthia. “She liked going to Mass and
getting communion. She seemed very comfortable.
Her caretaker, Sister Mary Damien, was wonderful.”

also displayed near Larry’s window.
The Schreiner family worried Our Lady wouldn’t be
the same without the Dominican Sisters, but they
were impressed by the high level of care and were
grateful to see the staff has maintained the same
warm atmosphere.

Larry welcomed the chance to strengthen his
connection to his wife. The marital bond can
continually deepen, even after death, Larry said.
“There are certain things you learn about spouses
after they pass on – whether you put it together or it
comes from other places.”
When Larry’s lymphoma worsened, he had hoped to

“It’s still wonderful,” Cynthia said during her dad’s
stay at Our Lady. “We were concerned about the
nuns not being here, but I can tell you, we’re happy
with everything here. I’m happy for Dad that he’s in
the same place that Mom was. I don’t want to lose
my dad, but he’s in a good place. He’s done what
he wanted to do on earth. He’s been fighting this
lymphoma for about 11 years. It was a good fight.”
Sharon echoed that sentiment, remembering Larry’s
first night at Our Lady. “We got him all settled and
we were getting ready to leave and I said, ‘Dad, do
you want me to stay here over night with you?’ And
in a strong voice he said, ‘No, I feel very good about
being here.’ And then it was like, ‘Ahh!’ It was the
right feeling all along – the same room, the artwork
on the wall. And then when he said that, for me as his
daughter, it was absolutely perfectly right.”

Steadfast Grandma Inspired Dazzling
Hollywood Career
Ninety year old Millie DeZiel is living proof of how
much influence one person can have, even from afar.
The St. Cloud native whose battle with brain cancer
brought her to Our Lady of Peace Home is the glue
that binds a close-knit family and, in many ways,
the inspiration behind her granddaughter’s wildly
successful career as a jewelry designer sought after
by many A-list celebrities.

Nicolina and Mary both live in Hollywood, so over the
years they’d call Millie with exciting reports and fun
stories several times a day. Sometimes they would
urge her to tune into the Oscars or a hit TV show like
“Glee” to look for Nicolina’s jewelry. When Millie came
down for Christmas and extended visits throughout
the year they treated her to
the best of Los Angeles. “It’s
been a total joy [watching

because I know how much
talent she has,” Millie said.
“She’s such an achiever.”
For their part, Mary and
Nicolina are quick to
praise Millie, who raised
three daughters and had a
vibrant marriage to her late
husband, Vernon.
“I’ve learned [from Millie]
to be yourself, have fun and
laugh all the way through
life,” Mary said. “Whatever
you do give it your all.”

Matthew Stafford Reflects on 28 Years
This fall marks Matthew Stafford’s 28th anniversary
at Our Lady of Peace Home, where he works as the
nursing supervisor. He earned his RN degree from
the University of Minnesota.
trying to brag, but it’s always been our goal to give
something other than what they can find at other
places, to do it a little better. I think the Franciscans
share that goal. They’ve been very supportive of that,
so it’s worked very well.
Give me an example of above-and-beyond care.
One of the best parts of being a nurse here is that first
time you can give somebody a whirlpool, because
frequently the person coming from a hospital hasn’t seen
actual water in a month. When you can put somebody
in a whirlpool bath and say, “It’s OK, you’re gonna love
this,” and they do, that’s really a special thing.
What were your early impressions of Our Lady back in 1984?
I enjoyed the people. Back then patients came here
much earlier in their disease process and oftentimes
without any treatment because the treatment options
were not very good for a lot of cancer. A year-long
stay was not uncommon, so I got to know patients
well. In the early years there were also more available
nuns to fulfill the needs of a facility like this.
Being around death on a regular basis – what
personal impact does that have on you?
How have things changed since the Dominican Sisters
of Hawthorne turned over operation of Our Lady to
the Franciscan Health Community early in 2009?
I am. I reflect a lot, and I pray on the way to work.
The staff has always felt like a family here, and when
the Franciscans took over, it left some nervous,
especially for those of us who had been here a while.
Would the mission be preserved? What was it going
to do our family?
I tell nurses that they have to feel that they’re cared
about and loved by us so that they in turn can give
compassionate care. Also, I like the levity; we have an
uplifting atmosphere. Most people don’t think of that
with end-of-life care. They think, “Oh, it’s got to be just
morbid.” But we have a lot of uplifting experiences.
It was comforting as we learned that the Franciscans
were very supportive of the mission and our family grew.
We have many more employees here now, and they
brought skills and information from other places. They
actually added to the family, so that’s been really nice.
What has stayed the same?
There’s always been the feeling that we need to
provide end-of-life care to the cancer patient that’s
above what they can find elsewhere. We’re not

I’m responsible for hiring nurses, and one of the difficult
things for nurses when they come here is learning to
slow down, because our pace is slower and it’s meant
to be slower. We want our entire staff to have that extra
time, that they can get what they need. There aren’t
many places at all that can support that luxury of time.
The Journey
It really makes a person want to make sure that
they’re doing the right thing in life.
And you’re a reflective man.
What do you admire most about the nursing staff here?
What do you make of the remarkable fact that Our Lady
is still able to provide this high-quality care for free?
I recall when Archbishop [Emeritus Harry] Flynn was
installed here, in his letter in The Catholic Spirit
several times he referred to Our Lady as being the
jewel of the archdiocese. He came here many times
unannounced and visited people and talked with the
staff. I think that there are a number of people that
hold that same idea, that this really is a jewel.

New Hospice Director Settles Into Role
Nancy Larson just completed her first year as
director of Our Lady of Peace Hospice and
Home Care (formerly Franciscan Home Health
and St. Mary’s Hospice,) having initially assumed
the position in an interim capacity last July. The
Wisconsin native and mother of five brings a
dynamic nursing career and valuable hospice
experience to the role.
Nancy was raised in a Catholic home in
Oconomowoc, Wis., and earned her BSN from
University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. She forged a
vibrant nursing career, working in Milwaukee,
India and then San Diego, where her work on
an oncology floor introduced her to the crucial
work of hospice. “I thought what they did was a
really rewarding career,” she recalled.
Nancy Larson, director of Our Lady of Peace Hospice and Home
Care, said she’s inspired by her dedicated staff. “They go the
extra mile without thinking twice.”
The Franciscan Health Community hired Nancy
in 2007 to work as a staff nurse at St. Mary’s,
so she knew the organization well when the
director position became available. She had served
a similar leadership position in San Diego and felt
equipped to take this on. And with her kids being
older now – ages 17 to 25 – she feels able to fully
dedicate herself to the important job.
“The transition has been great,” she said. “We have
a great staff. They’re so compassionate and they
are unwavering in their commitment to providing
excellent care for people. They go the extra mile
without thinking twice.”
As hospice director, Nancy is keenly aware of the
many advantages of the 2009 move of their offices
onto the campus at Our Lady of Peace Home. One
makes the other better and vice versa, she said.
It also creates a valuable continuum, she added: “If
we have people in their homes or an assisted living
situation that just isn’t working out, we can say, ‘We
have this wonderful in-patient facility if you have

cancer.’ And then they already know their nurse and
social worker who have been visiting them at home.
Other times people arrive at Our Lady and realize
they may have come too early, they’d rather be at
home, and we can take them home and serve them
there. We’ve done that as well.”
The productive interplay between Our Lady of Peace
Hospice and the staff at Our Lady of Peace Home
Franciscan values, Nancy said. “It’s very collaborative
and collegial – all the way from the nurses to the
volunteers, even the physicians. They like it when
our chaplain goes on rounds with them. In hospitals
I don’t even think physicians know who the chaplain
is! Or you’ll hear the doctor say, ‘We need to get the
social worker here to talk to the family.’ You don’t
see that in a hospital either. It helps them be better
physicians. It’s great for all of us.”
Nancy is proud of her team’s good instincts and
thorough approach to new challenges. It inspires
her, in turn, to work harder and continue to boost
awareness of Our Lady. Over the years she’s been
gratified by its respected status. “Our Lady has
such a name and reputation in the community. It’s
really important to so many people. Just in talking
to people, they’ll tell me, ‘Oh, my aunt was at Our
Lady,’ or, ‘My brother-in-law was there.’ It’s touched
so many people.”

Reflecting on Mission
Dear Friends,
The mission of Our Lady of Peace Home is to care for persons with
incurable cancer. This is a simple yet profound calling, unaltered since
the Home’s founding in 1941 by the Dominican Sisters of Hawthorne.
For 71 years families have entrusted us with the precious final days of
their loved ones’ lives. We earn their trust through countless acts of
compassionate caregiving from our staff and volunteers. Recently, our
board of directors decided to accept pediatric patients at Our Lady of
Peace Home. We would like to expand a bit on the thought process that
went into that decision.

When Kathryn Wornson first came to the board of directors with the
idea of accepting pediatric patients, our first question to her was how
this change would fit with our mission. For years Our Lady of Peace
Home has provided free care to adults suffering from incurable cancer.
And judging from our waiting list, there is still a tremendous need for
this care. However, we quickly realized that there is a growing need in
our community for care for children with incurable cancer. While parents
want to keep their dying children at home at the end of their lives,
factors such as single parenthood and economic struggles sometimes
make care at home impossible. We believe that we are uniquely qualified
to meet this need, and since our mission does not limit our care to
adults only, we should accept children to our care.
While our initial estimates are that we will see two to three pediatric
patients per year, our sense is that over time the number of children we
see will grow. After all, the care that our staff provides is simply second
to none. Their skill in helping guide both patients and families through
the end of life is well documented.
As always, the one hurdle we face before we can move forward is
funding. Our goal and wish is to first raise the necessary funds to care
for children, which we anticipate being around $15,000 a patient. Once
we have raised these funds, we can begin accepting children. If you

Our Lady of Peace to Accept Children

approached the leadership at Our
Lady of Peace Home in late 20011
with a request to consider accepting children at our facility. Approximately 80 percent of the hospices
in Minnesota now accept children.
Her department, along with some
pioneering hospices, developed
a consultation model of support
to help the staff learn more about
caring for dying children.
“You know how to provide the pain and symptom relief
as well as support for the family,” Jody explained. “You
know how to walk with the patient and family as they go
through the transition.”
Generally, hospices in Minnesota have provided care to
adults and the elderly but have been reluctant to add
children. Typically, children have been cared for at home
by family. In the current economy, with more parents
working, it has become apparent that alternative care
sites are needed. Options for in-patient hospice care of
children are very limited. Our Lady is unique in providing
free care to pediatric patients with cancer.
Our Lady will need to raise funds to cover the costs of
adding pediatric patients. The estimate is that there will
be two to three patients who need this type of care per
year. Training of staff and adaptation of the environment
to become more kid friendly are the biggest expenses
for this year.
Jody Chrastek, DNP, and Dr. Stefan Friedrichsdorf from
Children’s Hospital met with the Our Lady of Peace
Home medical staff in March to provide information and
answer questions. The physicians responded with strong
support of the collaboration. The Board of Directors
echoed their support to meet this growing community
need.
In September the final approvals were cemented in an
agreement between Children’s Hospital’s Pain and Palliative Care Department and Our Lady of Peace Home.
When the program begins, the Interdisciplinary Team at
Children’s will provide consultation to the staff at Our
Lady when caring for pediatric patients with cancer.
Name Change for Hospice and Home Care
What’s in a name?
Well, in the case of St. Mary’s Hospice and Franciscan
Home Health, a lot of confusion for starters!
“People didn’t realize that our hospice and home
care staff are one and the same,” explained Nancy
Larson, director of both programs. “We are also part
of the Franciscan Health Community, and at times we
were using three names to promote our programs,
and it just got very confusing to people.”
St. Mary’s Hospice has been working very closely
with Our Lady of Peace Home, so it seemed like a
natural fit to more closely align the two organizations.
Three years ago, they became affiliated under the
same parent organization, and St. Mary’s moved its
offices to Our Lady of Peace Home. The next logical
step seemed to be collaborating on the name. The
name they chose is Our Lady of Peace Hospice and
Home Care.
“It only made sense to connect the organizations
through name,” Nancy said. “We have a very close
working relationship with Our Lady of Peace Home
and offer the same quality end-of-life care experience
to our patients. It’s an honor for our staff to be
affiliated with the staff at Our Lady of Peace Home.
Sharing the same name brings a sense of formality to
the relationship.”

After a Decade, A Gift from The Wasie Foundation
Our Lady of Peace Home was grateful to receive
a generous donation from the Wasie Foundation
for our landscaping project, adding beauty to the
grounds and resulting in a more enjoyable outdoor
respite for patients and their loved ones.
Marie Wasie,
1903-1992
The Wayzata-based foundation
was founded in 1966 by Stanley
Wasie, a trucking pioneer and
Catholic, and his wife, Marie. It
provides scholarships to students
of Polish ancestry and supports
non-profit charitable organizations, focusing on those that serve
people with cancer, arthritis or
schizophrenia and children with
life-threatening or chronic illness.

connection with the Dominican
Sisters of Hawthorne and greatly admired their service
at Our Lady of Peace Home. “Marie thought the world
of that organization,” said Jan Preble, vice president of
programs for The Wasie Foundation. “Those nuns were
working tirelessly, giving their time and talent to care
for vulnerable people who didn’t have means. Marie
was really honored to be part of helping that cause.”
The Wasie Foundation’s first grant to Our Lady came
in 1977. Over the years, the foundation donated to
a remodel of the women’s floor, the second floor at
Our Lady, and to the whirlpool tubs that provides
relief to so many.
More than a decade had passed when The Wasie
Foundation learned about Our Lady’s exciting
landscaping project, a chance to make once private
grounds available to residents and their loved
ones. It is a good reminder to everyone: Even if a
considerable amount of time has passed, it’s never
too late to renew a commitment to Our Lady – on
behalf of your family, your community, your favorite
non-profit or your workplace
“We’ve all been touched by cancer in some way,” Jan
said. “At the same time we all want to find a cure and
better treatments, we also need to help people struggling
with the disease now. I expect the relationship [with Our
Lady] to continue and we would like to continue that
legacy because it was important to Marie.”
Estate Gifts Sustain Our Lady of Peace’s Mission
Our Lady of Peace Home relies solely upon donations
to fund its mission of providing free care to cancer
patients. Each year we receive thousands of gifts
from generous donors to support this mission. Yet it
is the gifts of a few generous, thoughtful donors that
have the biggest impact – those donors who have
left Our Lady of Peace Home in their will.
Last year alone Our Lady of Peace Home raised more
than $2 million from nearly 4,000 donors. Of that
amount, more than half – $1.2 million – came from
just 10 estate gifts. That demonstrates the kind of
impact leaving a portion of your estate to charity can
have on a non-profit organization like Our Lady of
Peace Home.
Recently, we received notification that we were one
of 10 charities listed in an estate for a woman who

had never married and worked as an administrative
assistant most of her life. At first glance, her estate
seemed modest, around $200,000. Later, we
discovered a safe deposit box that held close to
$400,000 in savings bonds, along with an insurance
policy worth about $300,000! Thanks to her generous
spirit to include these charities in her will, each
organization will receive nearly $100,000 from her
estate.
While there are many types of planned gifts, by far
the most common is a bequest in your will, leaving
a percentage or specific amount to a charity. A
misconception is that planned giving is only for the
wealthy. The truth is, even people of modest means
can make a difference through planned giving.

One of the greatest gifts we can offer our patients and
their families is to help them die well. We strive to honor
the journey of each soul at Our Lady of Peace Home.
In spiritual care we walk with the patient as well as
those who love them. There are many paths in this
process. Fear is often present, the fear of dying and it
is important to talk about this fear. The medical staff
does a great job explaining the physical process so
that the patients and their loved ones are prepared.
Another level of preparedness is the spiritual journey.
Many have a hard time letting go. Yet there is a
moment in which we need to give those we love the
permission to return to God, to go home. We try to
guide them to this moment.
Spiritual care allows us to spend time with the
patient and with the loved ones to assist them in the
process of saying goodbye for now. It is important
to say what is on our mind and heart. Offering human
support and prayer when confronting anguish and
unfinished business is another role of spiritual care.
So is taking time to forgive or ask forgiveness. We
look at how we can treasure the gifts received from
the loved one and name their legacy. To be able to
genuinely say, “Go gently, go with my love.”

regarding funeral or memorial planning, cremation or

we do not want anyone to face these aspects alone.
We try to empower them to do this planning and
realize that it is OK to talk about before their loved
one dies. People just need to talk and process
thoughts and judgments. It is a privilege to walk with
them, listen and assist them on this path.
We strive to honor the journey of each soul, encouraging
family and friends to embrace their journey as well.
• Versatility. You can structure the bequest to leave
a specific item or amount of money, make the gift
contingent on certain events, or leave a percentage
of your estate to us.
• Tax relief. If your estate is subject to estate tax, your
gift is entitled to an estate tax charitable deduction
for the gift’s full value.
