the first reliable accounts of the Far East which reached
Europe were letters from the Jesuit missionaries full of first
hand information: social, cultural, political, ethnographic,
commercial, geographical, economic and religious. It was
the detail and apparent accuracy of their scholarly yet practical reports which prompted merchants, seamen and governments to follow them in opening up to European interests in the farthest corners of the known world. – Without
title, browned (beginning stronger), the beginning with
some tears at margins, the end with small waterstains.

644 JUDAICA – Musée des Horreurs No. 1–48,
50, 51. Partly colourd lithogr. after Victor Lenepveu,
Paris 1899–1901. Sheetsize about 58 x 50 cm. 4,500.–
In connection with the Dreyfus Affair a series of 51 antiSemitic posters was published 1899–1901, posing as “Musée
des horreurs” praised and with whom the representatives
of those Frenchmen were defamed who denounced the
miscarriage of justice, especially politicians and journalists. As a signatory operates a Victor Lenepveu, whose identity has not been identified to date (symbolforschung.ch).
– Paper crumbly, partly with light stains, 2 tears at margin,
partly foxed. Partly with some loss of image. – Enclosed:
The same. No. 9, 12, 14, 15, 17, 18, 27, 36, thereof 4 mounted
on strong board. – Partly with larger voids. – Wilhelm II.
“Son Rêve. Trop grand pour toi, mon vieux”. Chromolithogr.
after Jean Gabriel Domergue (1889–1962), 1914. Sheetsize
45.5 x 30.7 cm. – Marks of usage. Altogether 59 l. – Bought
as seen.
806 MILITARIA – Friedrich II. – 27 Military
manuscript maps on Prussian War around Berlin
and Potsdam, dated 1781–1784. On paper and in
ink colors with partly Dutch watermarks. 24,000.–
392
Including: 2 large folding maps of artillery exercises each
approx. 623 x 965 mm, with explanatory text to lower righthand corner and scale, and 25 maps of the environs of Berlin and Potsdam, some folding, most approx. 600 x 470 mm

(one much smaller), of which 6 maps are represented in
more than one duplicate copy, most of the Potsdam maps
with scales and showing the Sanssouci Palace, all of the
Berlin maps and most relating to Potsdam with compass
roses, all but one with comprehensive key and explanatory
notes with Orders of Battle at bottom, all delineated with
roads, watercourses, lakes, hills, woodlands and buildings.
(Occasional light dust-soiling and fraying to edges). – Some
of the maps are evidently copied after the fact, with 4 of the
1781 Potsdam maps dated February or March 1782, and were
presumably exercises in military map making. Some of the
maps are signed, and reveal the units and ranks involved
in the cartographic process: ‘S. Ernsts G.d.C. 1782’; ‘C.F.
Peithmann, Lieutenant’; ‘G.W. Siebel’; ‘P.J. Siebel Junior’;
‘Joan Vaudrianey Feuerwerker des Artillerie Corps’; ‘Joseph
Morass Gurd [sic] du Corp a Münster’; and ‘J. Colson’. Frederick II (1712–1786) has been long admired for his military
tactics and theories, and praised by the likes of Clausewitz.
His well-practised manoeuvres yielded him great results
on the battlefield, such as his defeat of the 41,000-strong
Franco-Austrian army at the Battle of Rossbach in June
1745 with only 21,000 soldiers. The maps here present a
detailed analysis of Frederick’s tactics, practised within
sight of his favourite residence, the Sanssouci Palace at
Potsdam. Sold with another manuscript map of the crosssection of the canal connecting the rivers Spree and Oder,
dated September 1751.

around 1550. In the etchings an image concept similar to
emblematics is announced: The fable motif turns to an allegorical subject; it is no longer illustration of an action section, but tries to bring the entire fable content, i.e. in addition to the action also their causes and consequences, into
the image. (Cf. Fabula docet 36). – About quality and print

about 1500). The Nativity. Oil on wood, 1495–1500.
55.8 x 36.3 cm. Framed. 10,000.–
Verso wax seal (2 knights with a crowned coat of arms) and
labels (Knauer, Berlin). – This picture is notable for its
regional character and it apparently appear as a work of a
local painter who knew the work of one or another master
(such as Michael Pacher (1435 Brunico – Salzburg 1498)
but may have not received a complete training to refine his
style. Nevertheless it is of interest to study in consideration
of the artistic environment of the Tyrolean area and there
are many indications, that this work is attributed to a painter
of the Tyrolean School in a circle around Nikolaus Stürhofer
(with respect to the candle in the hands of Joseph) or Hans
Schnatterpeck (remarkable type of eyes of all people and
animals). – Minimally rubbed, in a decent condition.
