Resiliency—How to Help Children Cope with Life’s Ups and Downs
As we mentor children in our program we hope to teach them ways to help deal with what life throws at them. How can volunteers and parents
help children be better able to deal with situations than others? From a report called Building Intensive Relationships with At-Risk Children (Pat
Zimmerman, MSW, PhD), Drs. Scales and Gibbons (1996) describe some of the characteristics of successful mentors. Successful mentors were
those who consistently displayed at least six of the following nine response patterns in their interactions with their mentees:
The mentor understood the youth’s reluctance to trust,
viewed his or her purpose as being available,
understood that the relationship would initially be one directional,
identified the youth’s interests and took them seriously,
did not force disclosure,
offered reassurance,
offered help to solve problems on the youth’s own terms,
attempted to relate to the youth’s experiences, and
attempted to understand the youth’s family but had limited involvement with the family.
Resiliency researcher, Nan Henderson would describe this type of mentor commitment, patience, and flexibility as an example of a “resiliency
attitude:” “Developing resiliency is first and foremost a person-to-person process. Resiliency is forged in the crucible of caring human relationships as documented by the numerous studies and personal reports that explore just how people do succeed in the face of often seemingly overwhelming obstacles…The crucial foundation of a resiliency-building relationship however, is what I have labeled ‘the resiliency attitude,’ which is
characterized by the messages, ‘I see what is right with you,’ ‘Your strengths are more powerful than your problems,’ ‘No matter what your past
you can be successful in the future,’ and ‘We will work together to find a way for you to succeed.’”
In short, mentors must approach the mentoring relationship as they would any meaningful interpersonal relationship. In most interpersonal
relationships emotional bonds do not just “happen,” they evolve over time. Once developed, solid bonds are typified by a sense of safety and
trust. The beneficial changes attributed to intensive mentoring relationships with high-risk children will not occur until an emotional bond and
trust are established.
“…by modeling caring and providing support, mentors can challenge negative views that youth may hold of themselves
or relationships with adults and demonstrate that positive relationships with adults are possible.” Jean Rhodes

We are excited to let all Mentors and Mentee’s know that we have added a new game to our games
bin! It is the Game of Life Adventures (Card Game). It is a fun card game based on the board game.
There are four types of cards, wealth, career, family, adventure. The object of the game is to build
your life story by playing the cards in your hand.
I have played this game many times and the kids really enjoy playing it. A fun aspect of the game is
that each card you play you must create a short story/reason as to why that card fits into your life
story. For example, if I was going to play the Jet Pilot Career Card, I would say “I got tired of the
boring drive to work, so I decided to switch careers and become a jet pilot so I can see the world.”
It is a fun game that encourages a creative imagination
and as the back of the box says, “Always wanted to swim
with dolphins? Now’s your chance!”
OUTDOOR WEATHER IS
FAST APPROACHING!
We are now in the time of year that the weather gets
warmer and the outdoors becomes a lot more inviting. Try
to plan some outdoor activities to do with your mentee at
the school. Here are a few
ideas to get you started:
Sidewalk Chalk, Basketball,
Soccer, Skipping, Flying
Kites. Also this is a great
time of year to remind your
mentee how to stay safe
while playing outside, try
talking about bike safety,
road safety, and good places
to play.
I hope you take the chance
to get out and enjoy the
spring weather together!
We are going to be running a
Go Girls! group in April. We are always
looking for more mentors! If you want to
get involved or know someone give us a
call at 519-485-1801 or 519-842-8542 or
send us an email at
[email protected] to
learn how you can get involved!

The Canada Learning Bond (CLB) is a $500 grant from the Government of Canada to help you start saving early for
your child's education after high school. This money can be used to pay for full-time or part-time studies in an apprenticeship program, trade school, CEGEP, college or university.
Who can get the Canada Learning Bond?
Your child can get the $500 Canada Learning Bond plus an additional $100 per year up to age 15:

If your child was born after December 31, 2003 and

If you get the National Child Benefit Supplement as part of the Canada Child Tax Benefit (commonly known as "family allowance").
Your child may get an extra $100 per year up to age 15, as long as you continue to receive the National Child Benefit Supplement.
Over time, the Canada Learning Bond could add up to $2,000 in grant money (plus interest) for your child's education after high
school. For more information: http://www.canlearn.ca/eng/saving/clb/brochure/clb-eng.shtml
