On GDP-Employment Decoupling in Germany: A Contribution to Explaining the Productivity Puzzle
Abstract: We investigate the time-varying relationship between German output and employment growth,
in particular their decoupling in recent years. We estimate a correlated unobserved components model
that allows for both persistent and cyclical time variation in the employment impact of GDP as well as an
autonomous employment component capturing other factors than real output. As one result, we measure
a permanent decline in GDP impact on employment as well as pronounced effects of the autonomous
employment component in the recent years. The development of the estimated impact parameters
depends on structural change, but also on labour availability and business expectations. Beyond GDP, a
high labour supply, tightness as well as moderate wages and working time reductions boosted
employment growth.

Boom-Bust Cycle and Firm R&D Financing
Abstract: There are many theories proposed to explain the cyclicality of research and development (R&D)
investments of a firm. This paper will study firm R&D financing conditional on credit constraints over the
boom-bust cycle of the great recession. The focus will be on Central and Eastern European countries that
have attained less attention in the literature of R&D financing, have less developed financial and venture
capital markets, and provide a textbook example of boom-bust episode over the last ten years.

Macroprudertial regulation and monetary policy in a DSGE framework
Abstract: Macroprudential regulation has the aim to mitigate the amplifying effects of financial frictions
and secure financial stability. The goal of this paper is to compute optimal macroprudential rules in a
dynamic stochastic general equilibrium (DSGE) model with frictions on banks and borrowers. Banks are
subject to a regulatory capital requirement ratio and borrowers are constrained by a loan-to-value ratio
(LTV). I introduce rules on these constraints reacting to deviations of output or house prices under
technology, housing preference and bank capital shocks. First, I optimize these rules by minimizing the
variance of the credit aggregate and output. The results indicate that countercyclical rules are optimal in
general. The reaction intensity however is shock-dependent. Second, I maximize conditional welfare by
searching over the LTV rule’s coefficient. If the economy is hit by a preference or bank capital shock, a
countercyclical LTV-rule reacting to output is welfare enhancing, but welfare reducing in case of a
technology shock.

Die deutsche Porzellanindustrie bis 1914. Teil I: Der Aufbau bis zur Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts
Abstract: Mit der Erfindung Böttgers im Jahr 1708 beginnt die Geschichte des europäischen
Hartporzellans. Dieses blieb bis heute bestimmend für die deutsche Porzellanindustrie. Der Vortrag
beleuchtet die erste Phase der Entwicklung. Die deutsche Porzellanindustrie ist ein gutes Beispiel für die
erfolgreiche Wandlung von Manufakturen zu Fabriken. Bis gegen 1800 kämpften die Betriebe mit
technologischen Problemen, welche zu hohen Ausschussquoten und Preisen führten. Die frühen Betriebe
orientierten sich am Bedarf der wohlhabenden Führungsschichten. Allmählich wurden breitere Schichten
als Abnehmer des neuen Werkstoffs gewonnen. In der Konkurrenz mit Fayence und Steingut verbilligte
sich die Produktion. Der Vertrieb konzentrierte sich auf den deutschen Markt, während der Weltmarkt

noch von nationalen Keramikindustrien und ostasiatischem Porzellan dominiert wurde. Die erste deutsche
Porzellanregion entstand ab 1760 in Thüringen, das hervorragende Standortvorteile bot. Thüringer
Industrielle begründeten auch die Porzellanregionen Oberfranken und Böhmen. Mit der etwas späteren
Ausbreitung der Produktion nach Schlesien und in die Oberpfalz kündigte sich bereits die zweite Phase der
Entwicklung an, die in der Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts begann.
