Visit a Southwest Florida farm – where melons, tomatoes, cucumbers, cabbage and peppers
abound – and meet the hardworking hands that cultivate our local crops. While much of
the public may never glimpse the behind-the-curtain aspects of this booming industry,
there are upwards of 74,000 agriculture-related jobs in the Sarasota, Manatee and
Charlotte counties combined. In Sarasota County alone, there are 61,033 acres of
farmland. More than 20 types of fruits and vegetables are grown commercially on
the 313,485 farming acres in Manatee County, including 575,820,000 pounds
of citrus every year. In other words, farming is big business in our tri-county region, and
our growers have lovingly provided us with fresh produce for generations.

A Saturday morning stroll through the Sarasota Farmers Market, for some locals,
is a ritualistic start to every weekend. Arrive downtown empty-handed at 7 a.m.
and leave with armfuls of fresh basil, artisan popsicles, homemade pastas,
plants and pastries. Among the 85 vendors at the year-round,1979-founded
market is Peter Burkard of Nature’s Partner, who has been a Sarasota favorite
since the market’s inception. Phillippi Farmhouse Market also tempts patrons with
homegrown produce and baked goods every Wednesday from October
to May, and Yoder’s Fresh Market in Yoder’s Amish Village brings jams,
jellies, and sliced-to-order meats and cheeses.
