The archive of the Germania No. 46 Free Masons Lodge includes administrative records
of the organization (membership petition books, registers, visitor books, receipt books,
and meeting minutes), as well as volumes from its library, which was an important
resource for its membership. Founded in 1844, the Germania Lodge was one of New
Orleans’ first German organizations, and is the oldest surviving social organization in the
City with a German history. German ethnicity or language ability, however, are no
longer membership requirements. Also included in this collection is material from the
Friends of Harmony Free Masons Lodge, which was incorporated into the Germania
Lodge after 1957.
This finding guide separates the materials of the collection into 12 categories: Library
(divided further into “Freemasonry,” “Religion,” “Literature: German Classics,”
“History/Politics,” and “Literature: Miscellaneous”) Bibles/Prayer Books, Bound
Newspapers/Magazines, Petition Books, Registers, Visitor Books, Receipt Books, Minute
Books, Loose Miscellanies, Additional Materials, Annual Returns to Grand Lodge/
Membership Lists, and Friends of Harmony.
