únor je sice nejkratší měsíc v roce, zkracování, jak známo z televizních reklam, je také
poměrně módní záležitost, nicméně vězte, že v našem newsletteru zkrátka nepřijdete …
I tentokrát vám přinášíme tipy pro studium jazyků po internetu – zaměření na obchod a
také přípravu na jazykové zkoušky.
Poohlédneme se za tradicí oslav, u nás stále více rozšířeného, sv. Valentýna.
Také v Číně se slavilo. Nikoliv však sv. Valentýn, nýbrž Nový rok, a to v tradičním čínském
stylu. Zajímá-li Vás více – např. také o roku Kohouta, do něhož jsme právě vstoupili,

2. ST. VALENTINE - NOT JUST A LOVERS´ DAY …
Every February, across the country, candy, flowers, and gifts are
exchanged between loved ones, all in the name of St. Valentine. But
who is this mysterious saint and why do we celebrate this holiday?
The history of Valentine's Day -- and its patron saint -- is shrouded in
mystery. But we do know that February has long been a month of
romance. St. Valentine's Day, as we know it today, contains vestiges
of both Christian and ancient Roman tradition. So, who was Saint
Valentine and how did he become associated with this ancient rite? Today, the Catholic Church
recognizes at least three different saints named Valentine or Valentinus, all of whom were martyred.
One legend contends that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When
Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families,
he outlawed marriage for young men -- his crop of potential soldiers. Valentine, realizing the
injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in
secret. When Valentine's actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death.
Other stories suggest that Valentine may have been killed for attempting to help Christians escape
harsh Roman prisons where they were often beaten and tortured.
According to one legend, Valentine actually sent the first 'valentine' greeting himself. While in prison,
it is believed that Valentine fell in love with a young girl -- who may have been his jailor's daughter -who visited him during his confinement. Before his death, it is alleged that he wrote her a letter,
which he signed 'From your Valentine,' an expression that is still in use today. Although the truth
behind the Valentine legends is murky, the stories certainly emphasize his appeal as a sympathetic,
heroic, and, most importantly, romantic figure. It's no surprise that by the Middle Ages, Valentine
was one of the most popular saints in England and France.

February 14, 1929 – “Bloody Valentine”
The mob hit known as the St. Valentine's Day Massacre took place in Chicago on
this day. In order to perpetrate the hit, members of Al Capone's gang reportedly
fitted a Cadillac touring sedan to the speculations of the Chicago Police Department.
Under the guidance of Capone's Lieutenant Ray Nitty, the murderers sought out
the garage of one "Bugs" Moran with the intention of killing him. Fearing the
possibility of misidentifying Mr. Moran, the henchman killed all seven of the men in
the garage. Without the help of their modern-day Trojan Horse--the Cadillac Sedan
which gang member Bryan Bolton claimed to have personally purchased from the
Cadillac Car Company on Michigan Avenue in Chicago--the gang would not have
been able to infiltrate "Bugs" Moran's garage with such veritable ease.

3. CHINESE NEW YEAR
TRADITIONAL CELEBRATION OF THE CHINESE NEW YEAR
Of all the traditional Chinese festivals, the new Year was perhaps the most elaborate, colorful, and
important. This was a time for the Chinese to congratulate each other and themselves on having
passed through another year, a time to finish out the old, and to welcome in the new year.
Common expressions heard at this time are: GUONIAN to have made it through the old year, and
BAINIAN to congratulate the new year.
TURNING OVER A NEW LEAF
The Chinese New year is celebrated on the first day of the First Moon of the lunar calendar. The
corresponding date in the solar calendar varies from as early as January 21st to as late as February
19th. Chinese New Year, as the Western new Year, signified turning over a new leaf. Socially, it was
a time for family reunions, and for visiting friends and relatives. This holiday, more than any other
Chinese holiday, stressed the importance of family ties. The Chinese New year's Eve dinner gathering
was among the most important family occasions of the year.
SWEEPING OF THE GROUNDS
Preparations for the Chinese New Year in old China started well in advance of the New Year's Day.
The 20th of the Twelfth Moon was set aside for the annual housecleaning, or the "sweeping of the
grounds". Every corner of the house must be swept and cleaned in preparation for the new year.
SpringCouplets, written in black ink on large vertical scrolls of red paper, were put on the walls or on
the sides of the gate-ways. These couplets, short poems written in Classical Chinese, were
expressions of good wishes for the family in the coming year. In addition, symbolic flowers and
fruits were used to decorate the house, and colorful new year pictures (NIAN HUA) were placed on the
walls (for more descriptions of the symbolism of the flowers and fruits).

HISTORY OF CHINESE NEW YEAR …
The Lunar New Year dates from 2600 BC, when the Emperor Huang Ti introduced the first cycle of
the zodiac. Because of cyclical lunar dating, the first day of the year can fall anywhere between late
January and the middle of February. This year, it falls on February 9, 2005 - Lunar Year 4703...the
year of the Rooster.

THE YEAR OF THE ROOSTER
The Year of the Monkey's optimism is carried over to the Year of the Rooster, but definitely, it is not
the year for get-rich schemes. At all costs, one must try to resist the great temptation to join wildgoose chases.
Politics will adhere to hardline policies and governments will flex muscles at each other. But, there is
nothing to worry about because it's just for show. Wood will tone down the usually very colorful
rooster but it will still remain ostentatious.
There will be lots of arguments on all fronts -- in business, in romance and even in the home. But
these arguments will cause no permanent damage to anyone. Cockiness will be the order of the day
but the rooster rests at night.
Because efficiency is the byword of the Year of the Rooster, nobody will really go hungry. It is,
however, suggested that people should keep their eyes open and their mouths closed. It is a year
when nerves can be frayed but pockets won't be empty.

4. AND THE GRAMMY GOES TO …
Nearly eight months after his death, Ray Charles still
rules the music industry. In a glittering ceremony of
Grammy Awards he was awarded eight awards including
album of the year, for his final album, ‘Genius Loves
Company.’ "I think it just shows how wonderful music
can be," said Norah Jones, who dueted with Charles on
the album's Here We Go Again, which was named record of the year. Charles’s
previous best night at the Grammy’s was in 1960. He won four awards that
night including two for his classic hit “Georgia on My Mind.” Charles won a
total of 12 Grammy awards.
Another one of the most nominated acts of the night was Usher. He won three
awards including Best Contemporary R&B Album for his Confessions album.
Irish Rocker, Superstars U2, won the awards for Best Rock Song and Best
Short Form Music Video for ‘Vertigo’. This brings to them winning total 17
Kayne West performs
Grammy awards. John Mayer won one of the four coveted general field
"Jesus Walks"
during the 2005
categories, Song of the Year, for his latest single “Daughters.” He also won
Grammy Awards.
Best Male Pop Vocal Performance for the same song.
Winning three awards this year, Norah Jones’s Grammy total increases to
eight. In addition to winning with Charles for Record of the Year and Best Pop Collaboration with
Vocals, Jones also won Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for “Sunrise”.
Green Day landed with the win in the Best Rock Album category for American Idiot. Their only other
win was back in 1994 for their album Dookie. Country veteran Loretta Lynn won two awards giving
her a total of three. Lynn won Best Country Album for her latest project Van Lear Rose, a collaboration
with Jack White of the White Stripes.

Let me first say that this year's Grammy Awards probably did more to recoup the statuette's image
than any previous year when it was granted to embarrassing D.O.A. pop trash, so artistically bereft
that even future kitsch revivals won't dare resurrect former winners even for the good wink of
hipster sarcasm.
Though the Grammys still represent commercialism at its most whorish, I applaud the happy
accidents of some of this year's nominees. Pop music just seems to be getting better, or at least the
Kanye Wests and Franz Ferdinands help balance blights like Jennifer Lopez and Hoobastank. But
whatever assets the awards might have managed beforehand, the show squandered in a painful
three-hour bloat.

5. BERLINALE 2005

Die Internationale Kurzfilmjury hat ihre Preisentscheidungen gefällt. Der erste Goldene Bär dieser
Berlinale geht an Milk von Peter Mackie Burns für den besten Kurzfilm des Wettbewerbs.

9.2.2005 - NOCH EIN AS IM ÄRMEL:
SURPRISE-FILM MUTTERSEELENALLEIN
Als Überraschungsfilm der diesjährigen Berlinale wird Mutterseelenallein von Bernd Böhlich gezeigt.
Mit schmerzlicher Genauigkeit erzählt der Film von einer Frau, die erfährt, dass ihr Sohn zum Mörder
geworden ist. Die weibliche Protagonistin wird von Katrin Saß verkörpert, einer der profiliertesten
deutschen Schauspielerinnen ihrer Generation. Bei der Premiere des Films am 11. Februar im Kino
International wird Katrin Saß für ihre Verdienste um den deutschen Film mit einer Berlinale Kamera
ausgezeichnet.

9.2.2005 - „LAST MINUTE“ - NOMINIERUNG IN DEN WETTBEWERB
Als letzter Beitrag wurde die ungarisch-deutsch-britische Koproduktion Fateless in den Wettbewerb
der Berlinale eingeladen. Das Regie-Debüt des renommierten Kameramanns Lájos Koltai erzählt vom
Schicksal der jüdischen Bevölkerung Budapests unter der Nazi-Herrschaft. Die literarische Vorlage
„Roman eines Schicksallosen“ stammt aus der Feder des ungarischen Nobelpreisträgers Imre Kertész,
der auch das Drehbuch zu Fateless schrieb. Der Film wird am 15. Februar im Berlinale-Palast als
internationale Premiere gezeigt.

6. EINE REISE DURCH DAS WUNDERBARE LAND FÜR DIE,
DIE SKI MÖGEN
KÄRNTEN
Kärnten ist nicht das größte und nicht das reichste Bundesland, aber ganz
bestimmt das schönste.
Kärnten umfasst rund 9500 qkm, auf denen gut 550 000 Einwohner leben. Die
größten Städte sind die Landeshauptstadt Klagenfurt und Villach. Zählt man
die Gebirgseen dazu, gibt es in Kärnten 1270 Seen. Die größten und
bedeutendsten Badeseen: Wörther See, Millstätter See, Ossiacher See,
Weißensee, Faaker See, Keutscchacher See und Klopeiner See.
Es ist das südlichste Land Österreichs, von Bergen eingeschlossen. Im Norden
sind es die Hohen Tauern (über 3000 m) mit dem höchsten Berg Österreichs,
dem Großglockner (3798 m), weiter im Osten die Gurktaler Alpen und die
Nockberge. Der gesamte Oberkärntner Raum ist geprägt von einer hochalpinen Landschaft. Die
Saualpe und die Koralpe - beide bei Wanderern und Skifahrern gleichermaßen beliebt - bilden die
Ostgrenze, dazwischen liegt das Lavanttal. Die mächtigen Karawanken im Süd-osten grenzen Kärnten
gegen Slowenien ab, die Karnischen Alpen längst der Grenze zu Italien und die Lienzer Dolomiten
schließen den Kreis.
See ist in Kärnten ein Schlüsselwort. Man ist stolz auf die Hunderte von großen und kleinen Seen, die
sowohl zum Schwimmen als auch zum Fischen und zum Segeln oder einfach nur zum Anschauen
einladen.
Überall gibt es gut markierte und beschilderte Wanderwege, Bergsteigen und Bergwandern gehören zu
den Lieblingsbeschäftigungen der Kärntern selbst. Das Kärtner Radwegenetz wurde großzügig
ausgebaut. So führt beispielweise ein Radweg an der Drau entlang durch halb Kärnten. Entlang dem
Nordufer des Wörther Sees kann man, von Autos ungestört, von Klagenfurt bis nach Velden radeln. Im
Geiltal gibt es einen 150 km langen Radweg.
Hotels, Pensionen, Gasthäuser, Ferienhäuser sowie auch Appartements bieten Touristen eine
angenehme Aufenthalt ob im Sommer oder im Winter
GERLITZEN / VERDITZ / DREILÄNDERECK
Die Gerlitzen lockt mit tollen Pisten, Snowboard-Fun, extrem viel Sonne. Das Verditz ist ideal für
Touren und Schneeschuhwanderungen. Kärntens südlichster Skiberg, das Dreiländereck, grenzt direkt
an Italien und Slowenien.
Europas 1. Windelskischule
Am Faaker See können Kinder ab einem Alter von zwei Jahren Pistenluft schnuppern.
Mit nur fünf Kindern in einer Gruppe bietet dieser Skikurs die kleinsten Skischulgruppen der Alpen an.
Der Skikurs selbst findet in der Kinderskischaukel statt. Ein Baby- und Kinder-Schnuppertag ist schon
ab 22 Euro erhältlich. In Ginas Baby- und Kinderhotel am Faaker See sind die kleinen Pistenflitzer
bestens aufgehoben.
DIE DOLOMITEN
Die Dolomiten erstrecken sich auf die Regionen Veneto, Südtirol und Friuli. Der Naturpark der Friauler
Dolomiten
ist der breiteste der zwei Parke von Friuli Venezia Giulia: mit seiner Fläche von 37.000 Hektaren ist er
ein echtes Paradies für Wandersport und Naturtrekking; die beiden Tätigkeiten kann man dank einem
angemessenen Netz von Pfaden unternehmen. Diese geschützte Zone erstreckt sich von der Provinz
Pordenone bis nach Udine und umfaßt Valcellina und das obere Tal vom Fluß Tagliamento. Das Gebiet
ist von einem hohen Grad von "Wilderness" (Wildheit) charakterisiert, weil es keine
Verbindungsstraßen gibt.
Die Gebirgskette von Monfalconi mit dem Campanile di Val Montanaia, die hohen Grasländer von
"Campoross", die Weiden von Senos Sennerei und die Einsamkeit von Canale di Meduna tragen alle
dazu bei, den Park einzigartig zu machen.
Der nahe Naturschutzbezirk Forra del Cellina ist mit dem Park verbunden: es handelt sich um eine
großartige Rinne, die Wildbach Cellina vor seiner Münding in der hohen Ebene von Friuli in den
kalkigen Lagen zwischen Barcis und Montereale Valcellina aushob.
Ganz bemerkenswert ist die Tatsache, daß man durch den Park nur mit der angemessenen
Wanderausrüstung gehen kann. Neben den thematischen Routen, die für alle geeignet - behinderte
Leute inbegriffen - und normalerweise den Dörfern ganz nah sind, gibt es auch stark
beanspruchendere Strecken, die wenige oder manchmal gar keine Wegzeichen besitzen und deshalb
die traditionellen Aspekte vom Bergsteigen noch bewahren, d.h. Abenteuer und Entdeckung.
Der Park ist von Gemsen, Rehen, Murmeltieren, Auerhähnen, Hirschen und einer großen Kolonie von
Steinböcken bewohnt. Die Anwesenheit des Goldadlers ist ein Zeichen der Gesundheit des Parks und
seiner reichen Fauna.
