A mountain paradise with an interest for
everyone
Traveling to Epirus, high up in the Pindus Mountains, you reach picturesque
Metsovo. If this is your first time here, you might be unprepared for the
breathtaking charm of this lovely village where natural beauty and gorgeous
traditional architecture make Metsovo one of the most stunning places in
Greece. The inhabitants of Metsovo still practice the traditional crafts of
woodcarving, weaving and embroidery. They are avid and renowned cheesemakers and accomplished winemakers. Don’t miss a visit to the Katogi Averof
winery.
A tour of the area should definitely take you to the National Forest of Valia
Kalda, the mountains of Peristeri, the Metsovitikos and Kalaritikos rivers, the
Lake Aoos, and the picturesque villages of Kalarites and Aetorahi. If you are
a nature lover, all of these sights are irresistible.
The capital of Epirus is Ioannina, one of the best-preserved cities in Greece.
Within the citadel in the old city, the legends of the famed local sovereign
Ali Pasha and the lovely maiden Kira Frosini come alive. A lake sits on the
edge of Ioannina and in the middle of it lays a quaint little island. There,
some of the most unusual local delicacies can be found. Among them eel
and frogs’ legs, as well as fresh lake fish but also goat baked in a clay pot
(gastra). These are also found in the city’s many tavernas.
Wine in Ioannina definitely means a stop at the Zoinos winery as well as Domaine Glivanos Estate in Zitsa. At the latter, take the time to admire the
famed Theogefiro (God’s Bridge), a rare naturally formed stone bridge over
the Kalamas River.
From there, an excursion to the «sonnets in stone» – the cluster of grey, stone
villages that make up the Zagorohoria, will lead you through some unforgettable vistas in all of Greece. Pass the gorges of Mikro and Megalo Papigo,
and saunter in the exquisite villages of Aristi, Monodendri, Ano Pedina, Vitsa

Ioannina liegt am gleichnamigen See und in der Mitte des Sees befindet sich
eine kleine malerische Insel. Wenn Sie in einer der Tavernen am See
einkehren und die lokalen Spezialitäten Aal und Froschschenkel nicht das Richtige für Sie sein sollte, können Sie genauso gut einen frischen Seefisch oder
Zieglein aus dem Schmortopf bestellen. Der Wein kommt natürlich von den
Weinbergen von Zitsa. Wein in Epirus bedeutet Zitsa und ein Besuch der Weingüter von Zoinos S.A. und Ktima Glinavos ist ein “Muss” für jeden Weinfreund.
Bei der Gelegenheit können Sie die berühmte Brücke Theogefiro (Gottesbrücke)
bewundern, ein seltenes Naturmonument. Die Steinbrücke über dem Fluss Kalamas wurde von der Natur geformt.
Von dort führt uns der Weg zu den einzigartigen “Zagorochoria”. Es ist eine
Gruppe von Dörfern mit typisch grauen Steinhäusern. Es gibt 46 davon, einige
heißen: Mikro und Megalo Papigo, Aristi, Monodendri, Ano Pedina, Vitsa und
Elati. Die Schlucht von Vikos hat eine Reihe von Steinbrücken, die atemberaubende Blicke in die Tiefe bieten.
Die ganze Region ist ein Paradies für die Freunde von Natursportarten wie
Schwimmen oder Rafting im kühlen Fluss Voidomatis. Die Abenteuersuchenden
können die Schlucht von Vikos durchqueren, bei Drakolimni emporklettern oder
die Trekkingpfade von Gamila erforschen.
Ein anderer Ausgangspunkt für Bergsportler ist die Gegend zwischen Konitsa
und Bourazani. Im Schatten der Berge Grammos, Smolikas und Gamila, dort,
wo die Flüsse Sarantaporos, Aoos und Voidomatis vorbei fließen ist es ideal
für Trekking, Rafting, Kajak fahren, Fallschirmspringen, Skifahren in Vasilitsa
und vieles mehr.
Gleich welche Aktivitäten Sie bevorzugen, in einer der vielen kleinen Tavernen
oder Restaurants mit lokaler Küche können Sie Ihren Körper und Geist regenerieren. Anschließend sorgen traditionelle und mondäne Gasthäuser (Herbergen) für die nötige Entspannung.

and Elati, just a few of the 46 magical villages that make up the Zagorohoria.
The Vikos gorge is laced with countless manmade stone bridges, affording a
dizzying view of the precipitous chasms below. This whole area is a veritable
paradise for nature sports, especially swimming and rafting in the chilly
Voidomatis river, hiking through the gorge, climbing to Drakolimni, and
trekking along the paths of Gamila.
Another prime center for mountain sports is the area that stretches from
Konitsa to Bourazani. Trekking, rafting, parachuting, kayaking and skiing are
all on offer in the shadow of the Grammos, Smolikas and Gamila mountains,
at the Sarantaporos River pass, at Vasilitsa, and in many other places
throughout the area.
Whether you are an active sportsman or a relaxed nature lover, you can replenish both mind and body at any one of the many small tavernas and
restaurants that dot these mountain villages. Local cuisine is the main attraction in most places, coupled with great regional wine and cozy, rustic
décor in most inns and eateries.

Weinberge in den
hohen Bergen
Genießen Sie in Epirus die Frische und die aromatische Finesse der
Weißweine von Zitsa und die bergige Herbheit der Rotweine von Metsovo.
Der erste Versuch, Cabernet Sauvignon in Griechenland anzubauen, fand in
Metsovo statt in einigen der höchst gelegenen Weinberge des Landes auf einer
Höhe zwischen 950 und 1000 Metern. Heute wird Cabernet Sauvignon in fast
allen Gebieten von Griechenland angebaut. Außerdem werden hier Cabernet
Franc, Merlot, Traminer, Chardonnay und die autochthone Vlachiko angebaut.
Aus den roten Rebsorten wird der Topikos Oinos Metsovou gekeltert.

der Perlwein-Version. Farbintensiver,
körperreicher Rotwein
Lord Byron und sein Mitreisender John Hobhouse haben vor etwa 200
Jahren zwei Tage im Kloster Profitis Ilias in Zitsa zugebracht. Die schöne Natur
hat den eigenartigen Dichter derart entzückt, dass er ein langes Gedicht schrieb,
in dem er die Weinberge von Zitsa, ihre majestätische Lage in den Bergen und
den tollen Blick auf das ionische Meer rühmte. Den gleichen Blick können Sie
auch heute noch genießen.
Hier auf einer Höhe von 650 bis 700 Metern müssen die angebauten
Rebsorten in der Lage sein, die kalten Temperaturen und die Nordwinde aushalten. Die weiße Debina erfüllt diese Voraussetzungen und wird daher auf
95% der Fläche angebaut. Aus wird der V.Q.P.R.D Zitsa gekeltert. Zitsa ist eine
der nur drei Regionen Griechenlands, die traditionell Schaumweine produzieren.
Die beiden anderen sind Amynteon und Rhodos.

In Epirus enjoy the freshness and the aromatic finesse of the Zitsa white
wines and the mountain boldness of the Metsovo reds.
The first attempt to cultivate Cabernet Sauvignon, now found in almost every
wine producing area in Greece, was made in Metsovo, on some of the country’s
most mountainous vineyards, at an altitude of 950–1.000 meters. Cabernet
Franc, Merlot, Traminer, Chardonnay and the indigenous Vlahiko are cultivated
here as well. The regional Metsovo wine is made from the red varieties.
Lord Byron and his fellow traveler John Hobhouse, spent 2 days in the monastery
of Prophet Elias in Zitsa about 200 years ago. The natural beauty so
enchanted the idiosyncratic poet that he wrote a long poem mentioning the
vineyards of Zitsa and their majestic mountain locale, gentle slopes that enjoy
a view of the Ionian Sea.
The altitude here reaches 650 to 700 meters. The varieties cultivated must be
able to withstand cold temperatures and northern winds. The white grape Debina fulfills these conditions and hence covers 95% of the vineyards here and
makes up the V.Q.P.R.D. Zitsa. Zitsa is also one of the only three places in Greece
(the other two are Amyndeo and Rhodes) that traditionally produce sparkling
wines.

The Wine Roads are really a series
of suggested, select routes for the avid
and curious traveler interested in visiting
some of the most picturesque and fascinating
venues in Europe.
Die Weinstraßen sind ein Ausflugsvorschlag
für den Erlebnisreisenden von heute. Sie sind
ausgewählte Routen mit vielen interessanten
Tipps, die Sie an die malerischsten Orte der
verschiedenen Weinregionen führen.
There are wine roads in almost all wineproducing countries. In Greece, the first
organized wine roads were outlined in 1993
by the Wine Producers’ Union of Northern
Greece and given the official name
“Wine Roads of Northern Greece”.
Weinstraßen gibt es in fast allen weinbautreibenden Ländern. In Griechenland ist das der
erste Versuch dieser Art, der von 13 Weinerzeugern im nordgriechischen Bereich gemacht
wurde. Sie haben 1993 die “Union der Regionalen Weinerzeugenden Betriebe von Nordgriechenland” ins Leben gerufen, eben die
heutigen Weinstraßen Nordgriechenlands.
Today, there are 37 members of the union
and 8 roads that cross the whole
of Northern Greece, with suggested stops at
the notable wineries of Thessaly
(Rapsani and Krania), Epirus, Macedonia,
and Thrace. Signage along the roads
directs travelers to vineyards, wineries
and other points of interest.
The many restaurants, tavernas, inns,
hotels, traditional shops,
and alternative activities round out
the traveler’s experience along the
Wine Roads. Each designated venue
has been selected based on specific
qualitative criteria and is so indicated
with a special seal of approval.

Heute umfasst die Vereinigung bereits 37 Mitglieder auf 8 verschiedenen Weinrouten in
ganz Nordgriechenland, nämlich Thessalien,
Epirus, Makedonien und Thrakien. Alle Routen
sind gut beschildert und lassen Sie die Weingüter und deren Weinberge einfach finden.
Die Karte wird ergänzt durch Hinweise auf Restaurants, Tavernen, Hotels und Herbergen, dazu Läden mit traditionellen Erzeugnissen und Orte mit attraktiven Freizeitangeboten. Es handelt sich dabei allesamt um Kooperationsmitglieder der
Weinstraßen Nordgriechenlands, die nach den
strengen Qualitätskriterien bewertet wurden.
