oder warum Franz Anton Fertig 1767 mitten in der Nacht aufwachte
Mit einem Schlag war er aufgewacht. Kerzengerade saß Franz Anton
Fertig in seinem Bett. Die einfache Schlafkammer war für einen
Augenblick grell erleuchtet von einem Blitz. Hatte er geträumt? Eine
Vision? Mit seinen derben Händen tastete er nach seiner Frau – ihr
ruhiger Atem vertrieb das sich entfernende Donnergrollen. Beruhigt
lehnte er sich zurück. Franz Anton Fertig, Jahrgang 1729, war ein einfacher Sattlermeister. Keine Frage, sein kleines Sattler- und Tapeziergeschäft in Buchen war anerkannt – selbst die Honoratioren aus Stadt
und Umgebung schätzten seine Arbeit. Er war ein angesehener und
beliebter Bürger. Bodenständig. Aber was er da geträumt hatte, war so
unglaublich. Das durfte er niemand erzählen. Die hätten ihn alle für
verrückt erklärt. Ganz vorneweg seine Frau.
Er war anscheinend zu Gast bei einer Familie. Musik erfüllte den
Raum, aber er konnte nirgends das Orchester entdecken. Entspannt saß
er auf einem Sofa. Das stammt von Ihrem Ururururururenkel, sagte
die Gastgeberin. Er war ganz benommen von den vielen Urs, prüfte
aber gleich auf Knien fachmännisch die Polsterung. Ja, die Nähte waren so kunstvoll und kräftig, als kämen sie aus seiner Werkstatt. Als
hätte er selbst Hand angelegt. Wissen Sie eigentlich, so der Gastgeber,
dass Ihr Name weltweit fortlebt in diesen Möbeln? Und natürlich
auch Ihre Handwerkskunst! Ist das nicht toll? Selbst in Dubai und
Amerika. Heute Morgen habe ich in der Zeitung gelesen, dass sogar
in Deutschland gebaute Kreuzfahrtschiffe damit ausgestattet werden. Franz Anton schaute ungläubig. Dann versuchte er ungelenk
mit seiner derben Hand die Rührung aus den Augen zu wischen. Die
Gastgeber schauten sich an. Wollen Sie nicht einfach heute bei uns
übernachten? Sie müssen doch ganz müde sein von der fast zweihundertfünfzigjährigen Reise. Franz Anton wollte gerade dankend ablehnen, als die Frau mit einem Handgriff das Sofa in ein Bett verwandelte. Das war der Moment, als er mit einem Schlag aufwachte.
Nun, besser, wir lassen Franz Anton wieder einschlafen. Schließlich
muss er morgen früh raus. Einen neuen Sattel ausliefern. Währenddessen schauen wir mal, was aus seinem Traum geworden ist.
SADDLE-FAST DREAMS
Zugegeben. Wir entwerfen schöne Möbel. Sagen jedenfalls Designjuroren und Kunden
weltweit. Aber wir denken sie auch. Überdenken ihre Funktion immer wieder neu.
Polstermöbel als Einladung zum Entspannen. Ein Sofa zum Schlafen. Ein Sessel zum Liegen.
Doch wie schafft man das, ohne dass man es ihnen ansieht? Wie lassen sich Sitz-, Relaxund Schlafkomfort kompakt vereinen? Dass uns dies immer wieder überraschend neu
gelingt, hat uns wohl zum führenden Hersteller hochwertiger Verwandlungspolstermöbel
gemacht. In nunmehr fünfter Generation führen wir Franz Antons handwerkliches
Ethos in unseren Möbeln weiter: die Haltung, als Person hinter seinem Produkt zu
stehen. Heute führen die Nachfahren Franz Schwander und seiner Tochter Katja die
Firma und sehen in der Familientradition klassischer Möbelbaukunst die Grundlage ihrer
Unternehmensphilosophie: Innovation als Tradition. Das meint moderne Designkompetenz,
eingebettet in handwerklichen Perfektionswillen. Und darin fühlen wir uns ziemlich
sattelfest. Nicht zuletzt dank Franz Anton Fertig aus Buchen.
OR WHY FR ANZ ANTON FERTIG AWOKE
IN THE DEAD OF THE NIGHT IN 1767
Suddenly he was wide awake. Franz Anton Fertig sat up as
straight as a candle in his bed. For one moment, the modest
bedroom was lit up by a garish flash of lightning. Had it
been a dream? A vision? His coarse hands reached for his
wife – and her calm breathing chased away the receding
rolling thunder. This soothed him and he leant back. Franz
Anton Fertig, born in 1729, was a simple saddler. His small
saddler and wallpapering business in Buchen was no doubt
well established – even the dignitaries from the city and its
surroundings appreciated his work. He was a respected and
popular citizen. Down to earth. But what he had dreamt was
incredible. He mustn’t tell anyone. They would all declare
him mad. First of all his wife.
Apparently, he was visiting a family. The room was filled
with music, but an orchestra was nowhere to be seen. He sat
on a sofa, relaxed. The hostess told him it had been made by
his greatgreatgreatgreatgreatgreatgrandson. The fantastic
number of greats made him feel dizzy, but he immediately
went down on his knees to check the upholstery. Yes, the
seams were so skillfully and strongly made as if they were
from his own workshop. As if his own hands had worked
them. Are you actually aware, the host addressed him,
that your name lives on in this furniture all around the
world? And your craftsmanship as well, of course! Isn’t that
wonderful? Even in Dubai and America. This morning,
I read in the newspaper that even cruise ships build in
Germany have your furniture on board. Franz Anton looked
at her in disbelief. Then he tried clumsily to wipe away
the emotion from his eyes with his rough hands. The hosts
looked at each other. Don’t you want to stay with us for the
night? You must be tired from almost two hundred fifty years
of travelling. Franz Anton was just about to thank them for
the offer and decline when - with a single hand movement the woman turned the sofa into a bed. That was the moment
when he woke up with a jolt.
Well, we’d better let Franz Anton go back to sleep. He will
have to get up early again tomorrow morning. To deliver a
new saddle. In the meanwhile, let’s see what has become of
his dream.

Granted. We make beautiful furniture. At least, that’s what design jurors and customers all over the world are saying.

Oder Warum sich Mathilde Schwander so gut mit Bäumen verstand
So richtig Zeit zum Träumen hatte sie kaum gehabt. Bereits als
Sechzehnjährige arbeitete Mathilde Fertig im Büro mit. Ihr Vater
Franz hatte 1892 die Gestellbaufirma FRANZ FERTIG gegründet.
Mit Schreinerei und Sägewerk , bald schon mit eigener Polsterei. Da
wurde jeder gebraucht.
Nur manchmal überraschten Mathilde beim Prüfen all der Lieferscheine, Bestellungen und Rechnungen Kindheitserinnerungen.
Dann lösten sich unter ihrem tagträumerischen Blick die endlosen
Zahlenkolonnen auf. Und wuchsen zu riesigen Bäumen. Zwischen
dem Geäst konnte sie sich als Kind spielen sehen. Mitten im Odenwald. Der war für sie schlicht der Zauberwald. Mit dessen Feen,
Kobolden und Riesen sie sich schon immer gut verstand. Mit ihnen
hat sie ihr Brot und ihre Phantasie geteilt. Angst vor den knorrigen
Bäumen, den dunklen Schatten der riesigen Baumkronen hatte sie
nicht. Im Gegenteil. Hier fühlte sie sich beschützt … Hinter ihr
räusperte sich mahnend der Vater, und Mathilde setzte ihre Buchhaltung und ihr Leben fort. Heiratete den Kaufmann Emil Schwander. Wurde Mutter. Witwe. Geschäftsfrau. Wenn aber der Papierkram und die Sorgen sie zuschütten wollten, wenn sie den Tod ihres
Mannes kaum ertrug, wenn sie mitten im Krieg ihren Mann stehen
musste als Familien- und Firmenchefin, dann huschte sie kurz in
den nahen Odenwald. Dessen Buchen waren nun Lebensgrundlage ihrer Firma und der Familie. Die spielerische Faszination des
Kindes wich dem Respekt. Vor diesen nachwachsenden Riesen, die
doch auch die nachkommenden Generationen ihrer Familie ernähren
sollten. Und wenn sie sicher war, ganz allein zu sein, wenn sie die
Waldarbeiter nur von ferne hörte, dann hörte sie sich mit einem der
Bäume sprechen. Ob Du einmal in fünfzig, sechzig Jahren eines unserer Sofas trägst, das Toben der Kinder, das Schnarchen ihres Vaters
ertragen musst? Es war ein tröstender Gedanke, mit dem Mathilde
dann in ihr Büro und ihre Verantwortung zurückkehrte.
Ob sich nun just in Ihrem Sofa dieser Baum verbirgt, können wir natürlich nicht sagen. Aber der Respekt vor der Natur lebt in Material
und Verarbeitung unserer Massivholzmöbel ganz sicher weiter. Das
sind wir schon Mathilde Schwander, geb. Fertig, schuldig.
ORGANICALLY GROWN
RESPECT
Buchen. Der Standort ist nicht zufällig. Sein Name wortwörtlich zu nehmen. Hier gewinnen wir den Rohstoff, aus dem alle tragenden Korpuselemente unserer Polstemöbel
samt Auszugsrahmen gefertigt sind: massive Buche. „Made in Germany” fängt bei uns
eben schon bei unseren Rohstoffen an. Dass uns der Odenwald seit Jahrhunderten treu
mit Massivholz gleichbleibend hoher Qualität versorgt, danken wir ihm mit umweltfreundlichen Herstellungsverfahren, der Verwendung ausschließlich schadstofffreier
Werkstoffe und der Einhaltung strengster Umweltschutz-Richtlinien. Und nicht zuletzt
mit der Entwicklung in Design, Material und Funktion langlebiger Produkte. Das verstehen wir unter „green furniture”: Ressourcenschonung und Nachhaltigkeit im Interesse
unseres ganz persönlichen Lebensraums. Und unserer Kunden.
OR WHY M ATHILDE SCHWANDER GOT
ALONG SO WELL WITH THE TREES
She never really had any time to dream. Mathilde Fertig was
already working in the office at the age of sixteen. Her father
Franz had founded the frame construction company FRANZ
FERTIG in 1892. It comprised a carpentry workshop and a
sawmill, soon to be complemented by an upholstery workshop.
Every hand was needed.
But sometimes childhood memories came to Mathilde whilst
she was checking all those delivery notes, orders and invoices.
The endless columns of figures would then dissolve in front
of her eyes and be replaced by daydreams. The numbers turned
into huge trees. She would see herself between the branches,
as a child, playing. In the thick of the Odenwald forest. For
her, it was simply the magic forest. She had always got along
well with its fairies, goblins and giants. She had shared her
bread with them, and her fantasy. Gnarled trees or the dark
shadows of the enormous treetops had never scared her. On
the contrary. This is where she felt protected… Behind her,
her father audibly cleared his throat and Mathilde knew that
she would have to continue her accounting and her life. She
married the merchant Emil Schwander. She had children.
She was widowed. Became a business woman. However,
when paperwork and worries were piling up over her head,
when she could hardly bear the death of her husband, when
she was forced to hold the fort during the war as head of the
family and head of the company – then, she would quickly
scurry away to the Odenwald forest. Its beeches were now
the basis of subsistence for both her company and her family.
The playful fascination of the child gave way to respect.
Respect for re-growing the giants that would continue to
feed future generations of her family. Only when she was
sure to be alone, when she could hear the forestry workers
were far away, only then would she hear herself talk to one of
the trees. I wonder whether one day you will bear one of our
sofas, in fifty or sixty years’ time perhaps, will you have to
endure the children’s rampage, the father’s snoring? This was
a consoling thought to Mathilde, before she returned to her
office and to her responsibilities.
We can’t tell you if exactly this tree was used to build your
sofa. But the respect for nature certainly lives on in the
material and workmanship of our solid wood furniture. This
is the least we owe to Mathilde Schwander, née Fertig.

Buchen. The location is no coincidence. It means beeches in German. This is our natural resource for all load-bearing
corpus elements of our upholstery furniture as well as the pull-out frames: solid beech wood. “Made in Germany”
in our case also applies to the raw materials. We appreciate the fact that the Odenwald forest has been faithfully
providing us with high-quality solid wood for centuries and therefore we apply environmentally friendly production
methods, work exclusively with pollution-free materials and adhere to the strictest environmental directives. And not
least, we honour it by developing sustainable products in terms of design, material and function. This is what “green
furniture” means to us. Resource conservation and sustainability in the interest of our very personal living environment. And in the interest of our customers.

Oder ein gutes Sofa gehört einfach zur Familie
Sie hatte es ihm abgeluchst. Seiner jüngsten Tochter konnte
er einfach nichts abschlagen. Papa, meine erste Wohnung!
Endlich raus aus der WG. Da brauch ich doch was Cooles.
Selbst am Telefon konnte er ihrer Stimme einfach nicht
widerstehen. Seine Frau hat nur die Augen verdreht. Hat das
Nesthäkchen mal wieder seinen Willen durchgesetzt? Meine
Güte, ja. Er sitzt in seinem Arbeitszimmer. Gleich wird‘s mit
der Ruhe vorbei sein. Aufgeregtes Türklingeln. Und dann
stürzen sie wahrscheinlich alle lautstark rein. Seine Jüngste
mit ihrem Freund. Künstler, macht irgendwelche Videoinstallationen. Jurist wäre auch nicht schlecht gewesen. Naja.
Seine Älteste mit ihrem neuen Mann und dessen drei Kindern. Patchwork-Opa, sagen sie immer zu mir. Und dann
sein Sohn. Wenn er nicht wieder den Flieger verpasst hat.
Kommt ja kaum raus aus seinem Büro. Kein Wunder, dass
er immer noch solo ist. Sagt er zumindest. Aber noch hat es
nicht geklingelt. Noch sitzt er allein auf seinem Sofa, das
ihm die Kleine abgeschwatzt hat. Das hat er seit 1987. Ist
jetzt auch schon …, hm, fünfundzwanzig Jahre her. Damals
war er Student. Jura. Drei Semester. Dann abgebrochen. Und
sich selbstständig gemacht. Malou hatte damals als erstes
Verwandlungssofa überhaupt das GS-Zeichen bekommen.
Seine Eltern steuerten was bei. Qualität zahlt sich aus,
haben sie gesagt. Und haben Recht behalten. Jetzt steht es
immer noch da. Sieht immer noch gut aus, „cool“ eben. Er
lacht. Ok, die Stoffbezüge hat er inzwischen austauschen
lassen. Das hat er beim Hersteller machen lassen. Aber die
Verwandlungsfunktion – immer noch einwandfrei. Heute
Nacht werden da seine Enkel drauf schlafen. Und morgen,
ja morgen nimmt es dann seine Tochter mit. Und nächste
Woche kommt dann das neue Malou. Aber das weiß noch
niemand. Nicht mal seine Frau. Es klingelt Sturm an der
Tür.

OR A GOOD SOFA IS JUST PART OF THE
FAMILY
She had wrangled it out of him. He just couldn’t refuse his
youngest daughter anything. Daddy, my first apartment!
Finally out of the shared flat. I need a cool piece of furniture.
Even on the telephone, he simply couldn’t resist her voice.
His wife rolled her eyes at that. Will our youngest get her
way again? Oh my, it seems so. He is in his study. Soon the
peace and quiet will be over. The doorbell will ring excitedly.
And then they will probably all burst in. His youngest
with her boyfriend. An artist. Makes some kind of video
installations. A lawyer wouldn’t have been bad. Oh well. His
eldest with her new husband and his three kids. PatchworkGranddad is what they call him. And then his son. If he
hasn’t missed his flight again. Hardly ever leaves the office.
Not a great surprise that he’s still single. According to him,
at least. But the doorbell hasn’t rung yet. So far, he is still
sitting alone on exactly the sofa his youngest has coaxed out
of him. He has had it since 1987. How long is that ago…,
hm, twentyfive years. He was a student back then. Law.
Three semesters. Then he quit. Founded his own company.
Malou was the first convertible sofa to receive the German
seal of approval. His parents had contributed towards it.
Quality pays off, they said. And they were right. It’s still
here. It still looks good, looks “cool”, indeed. He is laughing.
Yes he had the fabric seat covers replaced. This was done
by the manufacturer. But the pull-out construction – it still
works a treat. His grandchildren will sleep on it tonight. And
tomorrow, yes, tomorrow his daughter will take it. And next
week there will be a new Malou. But no one knows that yet.
Not even his wife. The doorbell rings loudly.
