The uail bag looked good last
••\veek. Bob Haber wrote from
Pisa—you know that town with
the famous tower "cut on the
bias"—that he is coming honxe
soon. In order to prove how
soon it'll be, he didn't even
bother with an A.P.O. number
any raore, but simply put down
"540 West 165th Street, New
York," äs the sender's address.
Sounds sweet, doesn't H? . . •
Albrecht Kuerschner wko was in
the South African Army, is down
civvy street, too. We are free to
call him "Mister" now, but we
prefer the old, familiär "Abe,"
\vhich he has been for us ever
since El-Alamein, and all through
the Italian campaign up to the
Alps. From all we've heard he
imist have done a splendid, Job
for the Jewish refugees he met
on bis way. The Army had asked
him to volunteer for service in
the Far East, but he thinks he
has done enough with more than
5 years in uniform. Wants 'to go
home to his adopted home-town,
Johannesburg. Lots of luck, Abe.
. . . Also coming home is Fritz
Ringel from "somewhere on Luzon," and also giving his N. Y.
address already. Must be a great
thrill to use it again. . . . Sailing for Los Angeles is Guenther
Drucker, who, if we werc right
in putting two and two together,
must have been in every major
battle of the Pacific. . . . Rudolf
Cole has Become an American
citizen in Camp Meade. They
couldn't find him while has was
in New Guinea. Has 95 points,
but something teils us that Uncle
Sana has become so fond of him
that he simply won't let him
go. . . . Egon Weiss, with the
British Liberation Army, n'ow in
England, got the furlough he had
been waiting for a long time;
used it to see his siäter in Toulouse who had been hiding before the Germans, and who is
now reunited with her husband
and her two children. Says they
just sät and talked—days and
nights. ... A similar furlough

acter on the Fibber McGee artd
Molly program, is on his own
now: Mondays al 9 over WABC.
Only trouble is that his show
coinoides with the Telephone
Hour \\hich we hate to miss.
Last week they had Heifetz, and
two weeks from now it'll be
Marian Anderson. So, here again
we have proof that the networks
are really rivaling with each
other in a most senseless way,
and that they'd better get themselves some sort of a czar who
does the over-all planning for
them. After all, in the Kate
Smit|pjack Benny case the competitive idea didft't work so well
for CBS. And if you ask us,
it is a shame to waste a talent
like Hurt's on such an unequal
competition. . . . Speaking of
Jack, \ve saw a letTer he wrote
to Ed Sullivan. "Dear Ed," it
says, "here I am running au
around Germany. (You probably
do not know that I am a Jewish
boy.)
Greatest kick so far was
on July 4, when we did our show
at the Stadium in Nuremberg.
In case Hitler is listening, Larry
Adler, another non-Aryan, played
Gerschwin's "Rhapsody in Blue."
The audience was 40,000 GI
guys. Ingrid Bergman joined us,
and the boys are nuts about her."'
Here i« a story we must have
missed when John Patrick wrote
"The Hasty Heart" in the Lyon's
Den, and which a friendly reader
sent in for you to enjoy: Buress Meredith, soon to be seen äs
the beloved Ernie Pyle, is understandably proud of his wife,
Paulette Goddard. She is one
of the wealthy women of Hollywood who doesn't worry too
much over the fact that 92 per
