Transnational partnership with 8 european countries HHD Appreciative Inquiry - AI = method we use during the whole project Human Health Design Developed by David Cooperrider Qualities of AI: Not only problem-solving but supporting selforganizing change processes that flow from new ideas. A focus on how people think instead of what people do and esteeming it. Institut für die Optimierung von Gesundheitssystemen Asking for positive experiences which could be further developed – looking for hidden potentials within an organization. HHD Human Health Design Topics of the working groups within the hospitals and nursing homes Interface management: Organization of daily clinical operations; Optimization of operational sequences in surgery and accident surgery; Coordinated patient admission. General organizational topics: Organization of the production and administration of screening findings; establishing honorary attendance services in nursing homes. Health promotion: Establishment of health circle Teamwork: communication (service discussions, service deliveries); process development in the team; cooperation between care and administration. Institut für die Optimierung von Gesundheitssystemen HHD Human Health Design Example 1: Coordinated patient admission Hospital Internal Client: first - administrative manager; Then: medical leader and care directress Project group: 2 phycisians (surgery department) 2 nurses, 1 portier, 1 administrative employee, 1 secretary, 1 radiology assistant Characteristics: administrative manager dismissed; boycott of survey; great distrust. now: Example of Best-Practise for multiprofessional cooperation! Institut für die Optimierung von Gesundheitssystemen HHD Human Health Design Example 2: Optimization of operational sequences in surgery and accident surgery Hospital Internal Client: Medical department leader Project group: second care directress, 3 nurses, 2 nurses in a leading positon (department), 2 physicians, 1 quality manager Characteristics: Medical department leader originally very enthusiastic; after presentation of survey results very negative attitude which he transfered to his team Project group worked on subjects – very frustraded about their boss – stands not behind them – big dilemma! Institut für die Optimierung von Gesundheitssystemen But: Positive feedback from Medical department leader to group empowered group HHD Human Health Design Institut für die Optimierung von Gesundheitssystemen Specialities of multiprofessional teams in the health care sector Different professions don´t speak the same language – definition process important! External motivation necessary to bring different professions together Doctors always have good excuses not to come to a meeting Nurses often stick very closely together and have a better team-climate than doctors Work of Doctors and nurses is not targetoriented often they only react (emergency) HHD Human Health Design Institut für die Optimierung von Gesundheitssystemen Specialities of multiprofessional teams in the health care sector Hierarchy and strong competition between doctors Working-group meetings rarely begin on time Doctors „can´t“ switch off the mobile phone – sometimes disappear during the meeting Need some time at the beginning do complain... Employees in hospitals are often very frustrated Nursing homes: first impression = everything o.k. General agreement: we do things only if it´s for the patient´s well-being HHD Human Health Design Institut für die Optimierung von Gesundheitssystemen Positive Experiences of working with multi-professional teams Knowledge and ideas of all professions can be used in a very fruitful way They liked teamwork with other professions – the structure of hospitals normally doesn´t allow this Mistrust between different professions could partially be broken Problems in communication could often be solved very easily Positive feedback from members of workinggroup and managment Mental health promotion – people speak about problems and felt accepted HHD Human Health Design Recommendation to management • The well-being of the employees should become a central task of the management • Needs and suggestions of the employees should be regularly asked and taken seriously! • Creating „Areas “ for discussing working processes and conditions – members of all occupational groups! • Neutral Motivator and moderator! Institut für die Optimierung von Gesundheitssystemen • Constructional management of errors HHD Human Health Design If you have further questions don´t hesitate to conact me: Mag.
