Manual Explanation
• Information not described in this manual may be
displayed in some cases. Make sure to read the text file
attached to the disc.
• If there are any variations between the explanation in
this manual and the actual application method, priority
is given to the actual application method.
• The screens used as examples in this manual are those
of the development stage, so they may vary from those
in the final product.
• This manual is written for people who have a basic
knowledge of how to use a computer. If there are no
special instructions, perform the same operation as a
normal computer operation.

Warranty
This product is covered by a limited warranty when
you register your Thomson Grass Valley product. This
warranty is for a period of one year (or two years in
European Union countries) from the date of purchase from
Thomson Grass Valley or an authorized Thomson Grass
Valley agent. This warranty applies only to the original
purchaser of the Thomson Grass Valley product and is not
transferable, Thomson Grass Valley warrants that for this
period the product will be in good working order. Should
our product fail to be in good working order, Thomson
Grass Valley will, at its option, repair or replace it at no
additional charge, provided that the product has not been
subjected to misuse, abuse or non-Thomson Grass Valley
authorized alternations, modifications and/or repair.
Proof of purchase is required to validate your warranty.
Thomson Grass Valley is not responsible for any lost
profits, lost savings or other incidental or consequential

The following conditions indicate the potential for serious
bodily injury or loss of life.
Health precautions
In rare cases, flashing lights or stimulation from the bright
light of a computer display or TV monitor may trigger
temporary epileptic seizures or loss of consciousness.
It is believed that even individuals whom have never
experienced such symptoms may be susceptible. If you or
close relatives have experienced any of these symptoms,
consult a doctor before using this product.
Do not use in environments requiring a high degree of reliability
and safety
This product is not to be used in medical devices or life
support systems. The characteristics of this product are not
suited for use with such systems.
Protect against static electricity
An electrostatic discharge may damage components of this
product. Do not directly touch any of the connectors or
component surfaces.
Static electricity can be generated on clothing and on
people. Before handling the product, discharge static
electricity from your body by touching a grounded metal
surface.
Do not disassemble
Do not modify the product. Fire, electric shock or
malfunction may result. For internal inspection or repair,
please contact your system integrator or Thomson Grass
Valley directly.

Do not setup in areas subject to heat
Do not setup in an area exposed to direct sunlight or
near a heating apparatus. The heat can accumulate,
causing burns, fire or damage. Also, the unit may become
deformed or change color.
Only setup using the prescribed method
Do not setup in a manner other than prescribed. Do
not use while wrapped in cloth or plastic. Heat can
accumulate, causing burns, fire or damage.
FCC Notice
This equipment has been tested and found to comply
with the limits for the class B digital device, pursuant to
part 15 of the FCC Rules. These limits are designed to
provide reasonable protection against interference in a
residential installation. This equipment generates, uses and

System requirements
PC
PC/AT compatible machine that meets the following
criteria:
• CPU: Intel Pentium 4 2.4GHz (hyper-threading) or
higher
* Intel Pentium4 3GHz, Pentium D 820 or higher

The bus slot below is required:
• A PCI Express x1
CD-ROM
• Required for software installation.
* Relevant drive is required when creating Blu-ray/
DVD disc.

To generate the temporary files, the HDD needs to have
approximately twice the capacity of the output media. Also
note that the output may fail with an HDD formatted in
FAT32.

Hardware installation
Installing the board
Before installing the board, be sure that your work area is
dust-free and dry.
You will need a screwdriver and an empty box to hold the
removed screws.
1. Shut down the PC and turn the power off.
2. Remove the PC cover.
Refer to the PC manual on how to do this.
3. Remove the PCI Express slot cover (PCI Express x1)
position to place your FIRECODER Blu board.
Refer to your PC manual on the different types of PCI
Express slots.
The removed slot cover will not be used during
installation. Keep the cover in a safe place.
4. Confirm the availability of a slot in which to install the
FIRECODER Blu board.
Confirm the following:
If the PCI Express x1 slot is not available, the FIRECODER
Blu board can be installed in either an empty x4, x8 or x16
PCI Express slot.
Be sure not to damage the PCI Express x1 connector on the
FIRECODER Blu board as it may be damaged by impact or
excessive pressure.

Section 2 ― Hardware installation
POINT
The Thomson Grass Valley board should fit into the PCI Express
slot without having to use any significant force. If the board
cannot be fully inserted, avoid forcing or bending any part of
the board. The board is designed to fit a standard PCI Express
slot. If the board does not seem to fit when trying to insert it, do
not attempt to force it into the slot. If the board does not easily
fit into the slot, try using the other PCI Express slots, or contact
your PC or motherboard manufacturer.
5. Slide the FIRECODER Blu board firmly into a PCI
Express slot and screw in the bracket that secures the
board.

Installation/Uninstallation
Installing the FIRECODER WRITER
NOTE
When you boot the PC after installing the board, the "Found
New Hardware Wizard" dialog will appear. Select the Cancel
button in the dialog.
Before starting the installation, close all other applications that
are running in the task tray.
Installation requires logging on to the PC as an administrator
(such as the PC administrator).
This manual explains the procedures used in the Windows Vista
environment.
1. Place the application CD into the CD-ROM drive.
If the application does not start automatically, open the
CD, and double-click setup.exe.
The "InstallShield Wizard" dialog will appear.
In the Windows Vista environment, if the user account
control dialog
appears, click Continue.
2. Click Next.

3. If you agree the license agreement, select I accept the
terms of the license agreement and click Next.
NOTE
Be sure of reading through terms and conditions by scrolling
whole description.
4. Click Install.

5. Select Yes, I want to restart my computer now and click
Finish.

The PC will restart and FIRECODER WRITER installation
is complete.

Uninstallation
To uninstall the driver and the FIRECODER WRITER:
NOTE
Before starting uninstallation, close all other applications that
are running in the task tray.
Uninstallation requires logging on to the PC as an administrator.
In this manual, the procedures used in the Windows Vista
environment are explained.
1. Select Control Panel from the start menu and click
Uninstall a program (Add or Remove Programs for Windows
XP).

2. Select FIRECODER WRITER and click Uninstall (Remove for
Windows XP).
3. On Windows Vista, the User Account Control dialog
may appear. Click Continue.
4. Click Yes.
Uninstallation starts.

5. Select Yes, I want to restart my computer now and click
Finish.
The PC will restart and uninstallation is complete.

Using FIRECODER WRITER
FIRECODER WRITER, a dedicated application for the
FIRECODER Blu, creates Blu-ray or DVD video discs out
of registered video files.
According to the type of clips, titles and chapters can be
created and edited.
Starting FIRECODER WRITER
Launching FIRECODER WRITER from the Start Menu
1. Choose start > All programs > Canopus > FIRECODER
WRITER > FIRECODER WRITER.

Lists menus to operate FIRECODER WRITER.

Lists the title icons. By right-clicking a title icon, you can
edit titles and add clips.
Clips that are registered on the selected title are listed in
the Clip list. You can edit them, including changing orders
and marking chapters.
• Preview
Displays the preview of the selected clip.
• Clip information, Clip operation area
Contains Current position, Duration, Slider, Add/Remove
chapter button, Clip list, Add clip button, and Delete clip
button.

Contains Setting button, Disc space chart, Space required,
Playlist, Total Length, Output target radio button, and Output

Adding a title
Adding a title
On the FIRECODER WRITER Title list, you can create and
edit the title for Blu-ray/DVD video discs. The created titles are
played in the order that they appear in the Title list.
While the clips registered to a title are always displayed as
thumbnails, when you select a title icon on the Title list, the
clips registered in the title are displayed in the Clip list.

Adding a new title
1. Right-click on the Title list and choose Add title from
the menu.
2. A new title is added to the list.
• Alternatively, you can perform this operation by
choosing Title > Add title.

TIPS
When you are about to add an additional title, the following
dialog may appear to inform you that because the Blu-ray/DVD
video disc created with FIRECODER WRITER does not have a
menu, jump operations may not be executed properly on some
players. For details, see the manual for playback devices.
NOTES
The name of the title is used only on the application. Titles will
not be shown on BD/DVD players.

Deleting a title
1. Right-click the title to delete, and choose Delete title.
The selected title is deleted.

1. Drag a title to its new position and drop it.

Changing the name of a title
You can rename titles so as to make them easy to identify.
1. Click a title.
2. Enter a new name and press the Enter key.
The name will be changed.
• Alternatively, you can perform this operation by rightclicking the title and choosing Rename title.

Adding clips
You can register video files as clips to the selected title. The
registered clips are displayed in the Clip list. After they are
burned to a disc, they are played according to list order,
starting from the one listed at the far left.
You can mark chapters on the registered clips.

Available file format to input
The following file formats are available to input to
FIRECODER WRITER.
• Canopus HQ (*.avi)
• HDV (*.m2t)
• AVCHD (*.m2ts, *.mts)
• MPEG2 PS/TS (*.m2p, *.mpg, *.m2t, *.mpeg, etc.)

Adding clips
Register video files as clips to the selected title.
1. Click to select the title to which to add clips, then click
Add clip button.
2. Click to select the video file to register as a clip. Then
click Open.
To select multiple files, click the first file, then press the
Shift or Ctrl key and click the additional files.

3. The selected files are registered as clips in the Clip list.
Clips are also displayed as thumbnails in the Title list.
• Alternatively, you can perform this operation, by
choosing Add form the Title menu or by choosing Add
clip from the right-click menu of the title list.
Registering all video files in a folder as clips
You can register all the video files contained in a folder as
clips.
1. Right-click a title and choose Add clips in folder.

2. Choose a folder that contains video files that you want
to register as clips and click OK.
3. The files contained in the specified folder are
registered as clips and added to the Clip list.

Changing the order of the clips
The clips in the Clip list are played in the order listed, from
left to right. You can change the order of the clips.
1. Drag a clip to a new destination and drop it.

1. Click to select the clip to delete, then click Delete clip.
The selected clip is deleted.

You can mark chapters on desired positions on clips.
1. Click to select the clip on which to mark chapters.

You can mark chapters at regular intervals on a clip, on the
clips in a selected title, or on all clips.
1. Right-click the slider and click Open chapter tool dialog.

Deleting all chapters
You can delete multiple chapters at once from a clip, from
the clips in a selected title, or from all clips.
1. Right-click the slider and click Open chapter tool dialog.

Outputting to Media/File
You can output the edited result to DVD, to Blu-ray, or as
files.
After you have completed editing titles and clips, you
can output the edited result to media or as files in the
following procedures.
• Specifying an output setting
• Choosing an output target
• Outputting to media
• Outputting to file
NOTE
When MPEG or H.264 files are registered as materials, they
are transcoded using the FIRECODER Blu hardware engine.
However, the conversion of the field order is not supported.
Specifying an output setting
Click Setting and, in the Environment Setting dialog, specify
the Temporary file storage and the Encode settings.

Specify the destination folder for the file storage.
To generate the temporary files, the HDD needs to
have approximately twice the capacity of the output
media. See the estimated values listed below, and
check the free space on the HDD.
DVD (single layer):

Also note that the output may fail with an HDD
formatted in FAT32.
Video standard
Video standard
Decides NTSC or PAL automatically according to the
video standard of the clip registered first. If the clip
registered first is in 24p, the video standard will be
decided when a clip in NTSC or PAL is registered
first. Thereafter, you cannot change the standard, or
make NTSC and PAL clips coexist on a project. Note
that NTSC and 24p, or PAL and 24p clips can coexist
on a project.
Encode setting tab
Quality
Quality
Encoding quality: High quality, Standard quality,
or High compression. Regardless of the quality
selected, the required time for encoding is almost the
same.

Resolution conversion of Blu-ray
Specify the resolution to output to Blu-ray.
1920×1080
Outputs in 1920×1080 regardless of the resolution
of the registered clips.
1440×1080
Outputs in 1440×1080 regardless of the resolution
of the registered clips.
Auto
Clips with a resolution of SD or lower will be
converted to 720x480/576, and those with a
resolution higher than SD and lower than 1920x1080
will be converted to 1440x1080.
Those with a resolution higher than 1920x1080 will
be converted to 1920x1080.
To prevent clips with multiple resolutions from
coexisting, choose [1920x1080] or [1440x1080].
Quality setting on 1920×1080
Specify the video quality for up converting from SD to HD
(1920x1080).
Standard
High quality
Encodes in standard quality.
Encodes in high quality, using FIRECODER Blu
high-quality features. This option takes longer than
standard quality.
Encodes in super-high quality, using FIRECODER Blu
Super high quality high-quality features. This option takes even longer
than high quality.

Choosing output target
Click to choose an output target.
DVD
Outputs to a DVD disc and creates a DVD video. If
you check the Not delete work files after writing is
done option on the dialog shown before starting the
writing process, the disc image files are not deleted
and you can use them later to create the same disc.
Blu-ray
Outputs to a Blu-ray disc and creates a Blu-ray
video. If you check the Not delete work files after
writing is done option on the dialog shown before
starting the writing process, the disc image files are
not deleted and you can use them later to create the
same disc.
File output
Outputs registered clips as files individually. Although
the created title and chapters are ignored, the
registered clips are output as separate files.

Outputting to media
You can output the edited result to DVD or Blu-ray.
NOTE
Once the media is created, writing additional data or editing
clips on the created media is not available.
When a Blu-ray disc is created out of multiple clips registered,
the final frame of the first clip may appear for a few seconds at
the transition of the clips.
1. Click to select an output target (DVD, Blu-ray, or file
output) and click Output.

2. Specify values as appropriate.
Volume label
Enter the volume label.
Output drive
Choose a drive to use to write data.
Media information Review the media information.
Create Loop-Play
media
Check this option to create a media that will be
played in loop. Uncheck this option to stop playback
at the end of the disc.
Not delete work
files after writing
is done
Check this option to keep the disc image, which you
can use later to create the same disc.
Erase media
If a rewritable media such as BD-RE and DVD-RW
is inserted in the drive and data have already been
written on them, press this button to erase the data
and make the media writable.
Start
Press this button to start outputting data to media.
Cancel
Press this button to cancel outputting and close the
dialog.

If you check the Not delete work files after writing is done
option on the dialog shown before starting the writing process,
the disc image file generated in the Temporary file storage (see
page 36 ) is not deleted. To create the same disc later, choose
File > Output folder to media and specify this image file.
Limitations
At least 1GB of data will be written on DVD-R or DVD-RW

Therefore, even when you create a data disc containing less
than 1GB, it may take approximately the same amount of
time to write the data as to write 1GB of data.
This limitation does not apply to DVD+R/DVD+RW.
Writing cannot be aborted
Due to the limitation [At least 1GB of data will be written
on DVD-R or DVD-RW] above, the drive writes at least
1GB of data onto the disc, making it impossible to abort the
writing process.

Hardware-Installation
Wenn nur die Hauptkarte verwendet wird
Bevor Sie die Karte installieren, vergewissern Sie sich, dass
Ihr Arbeitsplatz staubfrei und trocken ist. Besorgen Sie sich
zunächst einen Kreuzschlitzschraubenzieher und eine leere
Schachtel für entfernte Schrauben.

4. Bestätigen Sie dei Verfügbarkeit eines Steckplatzes, in
dem die FIRECODER-Blu-Karte installiert werden soll.
Bestätigen Sie Folgendes:
Wenn der PCI Express x1-Steckplatz nicht verfügbar ist,
kann die FIRECODER-Blu-Karte entweder in einem leeren
x4, x8 oder x16 PCI-Express-Steckplatz eingesetzt werden.
Stellen Sie sicher, dass der PCI Express x1-Stecker an der
FIRECODER-Blu-Karte nicht durch Stöße und zu starken
Druck beschädigt wird.

Die Thomson Grass Valley karte sollte ohne Gewaltanwendung
in den PCI-Express-Steckplatz eingesetzt werden. Falls sich die

Installieren von FIRECODER WRITER
Hinweise Wenn Sie den PC nach der Installation der Karte hochfahren,
erscheint der 'Found New Hardware Wizard'. Wählen Sie an
dieser Stelle Cancel.
Bevor Sie mit der Installation beginnen, sollten Sie alle übrigen
Anwendungen, die in der Taskleiste ausgeführt werden,
beenden.
Die Installation erfordert das für den Administrator (z. B.
PCAdministrator) autorisierte Konto.
Diese Anleitung beschreibt die Verfahren, die in der WindowsVista-Umgebung verwendet werden.
1. Legen Sie die Produkt-CD in das CD-ROM-Laufwerk

Hinzufügen eines Titels
Auf der FIRECODER WRITER Titelliste können Sie den Titel
für Blu-ray/DVD Video-Discs erstellen und bearbeiten. Die
erstellten Titel werden in der Reihenfolge abgespielt, in der Sie
in der Titelliste erscheinen.
Während die unter einem Titel registrierten Clips immer als
Miniaturbilder angezeigt werden, werden die in dem Titel
registrierten Clips in der Clip-Liste angezeigt, wenn Sie ein
Titelsymbol in der Titelliste wählen.

Wenn Sie einen zusätzlichen Titel hinzufügen wollen, kann

DVD-Videodisc kein Menü hat und deswegen Sprung-Vorgänge
bei manchen Playern nicht richtig ausgeführt werden können.

Ausgabe zu Datenträger/Datei
Sie können das bearbeitete Ergebnis auf DVD, auf Blu-ray
oder als Dateien ausgeben.
Nachdem Sie die Titel und Clips fertig bearbeitet haben,
können Sie das bearbeitete Ergebnis auf folgende Weise
auf Datenträger oder als Dateien ausgeben.

Hinweise Wenn Dateien des Typs MPEG oder H.264 als Materialien
registriert sind, werden sie mit der FIRECODER Blu-HardwareEngine umgeschlüsselt. Allerdings wird die Umwandlung der

Einschränkungen
Mindestens 1 GB Daten werden auf DVD-R oder DVD-RW
geschrieben
Um die Wiedergabe-Kompatibilität der DVD-R/DVD-RW
zu verwirklichen, müssen mindestens 1 GB Daten auf die
Disc geschrieben werden.
Deshalb kann es, auch wenn Sie eine Daten-Disc mit
weniger als 1 GB erstellen, etwa genau so lange Zeit
dauern, die Daten zu schreiben, wie beim Schreiben von 1
GB Daten.
Diese Einschränkung gilt nicht für DVD+R/DVD+RW.
Schreibvorgang kann nicht abgebrochen werden
Aufgrund der oben beschriebenen Einschränkungen
[Mindestens 1 GB Daten werden auf DVD-R oder DVDRW geschrieben], schreibt das Laufwerk mindestens
1 GB Daten auf die Disc, so dass es unmöglich ist, den

Lorsque vous utilisez seulement la carte
Avant de monter la carte, veillez à ce que la zone des
travaux soit bien propre et bien sèche. Préparez à l'avance
un tournevis cruciforme et une boîte vide pour recueillir

4. Confirmez la disponibilité dúne fente dans laquelle
installer la carte FIRECODER Blu.
Confirmez les éléments suivants:
Si la fente PCI Express x1 nést pas disponible, la carte
FIRECODER Blu peut être installée dans lúne des fentes
PCI Express x4, x8 ou x16 vides.
Assurez-vous de ne pas endommager le connecteur de la
PCI Express x1 de la carte FIRECODER Blu, car il peut être
abîmé à la suite dún impact ou dúne pression excessive.

REMARQUES La Thomson Grass Valley carte doit pénétrer dans le
logement PCI Express sans qu'il soit nécessaire de forcer.
S'il est impossible d'insérer la carte à fond, veuillez ne pas

Pour l'installation, le compte autorisé pour l'administrateur

1. Placez le CD du produit dans le lecteur de CD-ROM.
Si l'application ne démarre pas automatiquement, ouvrez
le DVD du produit, puis cliquez deux fois sur Setup.exe.

Dans léntourage Windows Vista, cliquez sur Continuer si la

comme des vignettes, lorsque vous sélectionnez un icône

REMARQUE Lorsque les fichiers MPEG ou H.264 sont enregistrés comme

Limitations
Au moins 1 GB de données sera écrit sur DVD-R ou DVD-RW
Pour réaliser la compatibilité de reproduction du DVD-R/
DVD-RW, au moins 1GB des données devra être écrit sur
le disque.
Par conséquent, même si vous créez un disque de données
qui contient moins de 1GB, cela mettra approximativement
le même temps d´écrire les données que dans le cas de 1GB
de données.
Cette limitation ne sápplique pas au DVD+R/DVD+RW.
L´écriture ne peut pas être interrompue
À cause de la limitation [Au moins 1 GB de données sera
écrit sur DVD-R ou DVD-RW] indiquée ci-dessus, lúnité
