RICHARD SCHUR
(German, b. 1971 in Munich, Germany, live and works in Munich and Berlin, Germany)
Richard Schur’s abstract paintings, large and small, employ a grid-based code of ever-mutating sequence of color.
Discovering newly surprising harmonies in the interplay of colors – from natural to artificial, from subtle to raw – in what
up close prove to be creamily painterly surfaces he creates serene visual spaces. For Schur, abstraction is “a place of
collective and personal memories, experiences and emotions”. He clearly shows his interest in the directness of
Expressionism, the clarity of Hard Edge and the precision of the Renaissance painters.
Schur graduated in 2000 from the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, where he was Assistant Professor from 2002 to
2008. His museum solo exhibitions include shows at the Kunstverein Ravensburg, Germany (2011, 2008); Alpine,
Graz, Austria (2010); and Städtische Artothek, Munich, Germany (2005). His works were featured in many group
shows, among others at the Kunstverein München, Germany (2013, 2012); CCA Andraxt, Mallorca, Spain (2011);
Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich, Germany (2009); Guangdong Art Museum, Guangzhou, and Duolun Museum
Shanghai, both in China (2005). Schur has been exhibiting with several galleries in Europe as well as, in the US, with
ART 3 Gallery, Brooklyn, NY.
His works are held in many public and corporate collections, including: Guangdong Museum of Art, China; Centro
Cultural Andraxt, Mallorca, Spain; in Germany: Staatliche Grafische Sammlung, Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich;
Städtische Artothek, Munich; Ravensburg City Collection; Katholische Akademie, Berlin; Contemporary Art Collection
of the BMW Group, Munich; Allianz Versicherungs AG Collection, Munich; and HypoVereinsbank Collection,
Düsseldorf.
