Easter is the gift….
Easter is the gift of HOPE
Easter is the gift of PEACE
Easter is the gift of LOVE
Let us rejoice in Him,
who gives them all.
May God bless you at Easter,
and keep you all year through.
May God give you all the faith it takes,
To make your dreams come true.
May God’s love and wisdom always
help, to guide you on your way.
May God’s light shine down upon you
now, to bless your Easter Day.

FAITH LIFE
THE VIRTUE OF LOVE
Jesus made one lesson clear above all
other lessons – the lesson to love.
Love is not about us – it is about
forgetting ourselves and looking out
for the good of the other. That’s what
Jesus did – He forgot about Himself
on purpose. He chose to give up His
life for the good of others – us!
Becoming a truly loving person is
challenging - making little sacrifices
on purpose so that others will have a
bit of food, a bit of shelter, a bit of
peace, a bit of quiet, a bit of fun, a bit
of friendship. Through prayer and
concentration, we can get better at
showing love to everyone we meet.
SUPPORTING PASTORAL
ACTIVITY
The parish family is where we live
out our baptismal calling, especially
in the Eucharist and the other
sacraments. It is this community
where we are nurtured in faith and
where we can contribute our gifts for
the good of others. It is where we
pray, reflect, learn and grow to be
able to live our faith more
authentically in our families.
The pastoral life of our parish, Sts.
Martha and Mary, includes ministries,
outreach, faith development and
spiritual activities. Two key areas to
develop are support for family life
and a ready responsiveness to the
spiritual needs of young people.
In addition to attending regularly for
Sunday mass, consider becoming
involved. As members of Christ’s
Body, the Church, we are called to
support the good of all. The calling
of the Church is to proclaim the
Gospel to the whole world. The
parish needs financial support, and it
needs the gifts and talents of each of
its members.
SOCIAL JUSTICE INTITIATIVES:
Throughout the school year, the
students and staff have been
supporting ShareLife, Catholic
charitable organization in the Archdiocese of Toronto that
provides support to 34 agencies. You do not have to look far to
see the wonders being worked by ShareLife. You can find them
in your neighbourhood, in the homes on your street, in the pews of
your parish. In 42 municipalities, in 225 parishes and in more
than 20 languages, those in need receive professional, faithinformed and compassionate care the result of ShareLife.
Lent offers us an opportunity to renew our baptismal promise to
follow Jesus, through prayer, alms giving and fasting. At the
school, we have focused upon prayer and alms giving by
supporting ShareLife. Last year, with your generous support,
students and staff raised $4500.00. At a kick-off assembly for
ShareLife week, on March 26, 2012, students established a new
goal to meet last year’s target and aim for $5000.00. Presently,
our running tally is $3600.00. More fun events are planned, on an
ongoing basis, including, staff events, student popcorn sales and
ShareLife raffle; details of these events are shared with students
over public address announcements, facilitated by Student
Leaders, and through one-way e-mail updates from the principal.
In addition to ShareLife, Student Leaders will be facilitating ‘Vow
of Silence’ on Wednesday, April 4, 2012 to bring awareness to
those with needs and afflicted by hunger, poverty, abuse and the
like. The visual statement made by students participating in the
Vow of Silence will have great impact for all.
LENTEN FAITH ACTIVITIES
Prior to the great joy which the season of Easter bestows upon us,
our staff and students jointly gather in those rites and rituals that
draw us together in the celebration of our Faith.
As leaders and role models, our staff members sought to enrich
their faith through Wednesday morning liturgies and the
celebration of the Stations of the Cross with the staff of the
Mississauga East Family of Schools.
During Lent, attention has been brought to the small sacrifices we
can make which bring us to a fuller understanding of Jesus’
sacrifice. During Holy Week, our students will reflect solemnly
on the Lord’s Passion as they are guided through the Stations of
the Cross on Holy Thursday. Many thanks to Ms. Sanfilippo’s
grade four and Mrs. Copas’ grade five classes for their thoughtful
leadership in preparing for this liturgical service.
A mass in celebration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ will be
held on Tuesday, April 10, 2012; 10:15 a.m., in our school
CO-CURRICULAR
gymnasium. Members of our parent
community are welcome to attend
this mass.
POPCORN FOR SHARELIFE
Continuing to support ShareLife
through donations, the students in
Ms. Sanfilippo’s class will be
organizing, again this year, popcorn
sales on April 19, 2012. Popcorn is
considered a healthy snack, and meets
the provincial School Food and
Beverage Policy requirements. Thank
you to everyone for supporting this
very worthwhile cause!
CATHOLIC EDUCATION WEEK
Catholic Education Week will be
celebrated from May 6– May 11,
2012. During this week the Catholic
community celebrates the unique and
distinctive contribution that Catholic
schools make to our students, our
community and our province.
Catholic Education Week is an
opportunity to celebrate the Mission
of our Catholic schools as they strive
to integrate the Gospel values of
Jesus Christ in every aspect of the
school’s life and curriculum.
KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION
Kindergarten registration for September 2012 began on Monday,
February 6th. Thank you to all parents who came and registered their
children. Did you miss this important date? It is not too late to register.
If you have age appropriate children, please visit the school for a
registration package. You require your child’s birth certificate,
baptismal certificate, immunization record, proof of address, and a
parent’s baptismal certificate. If you have any questions, please contact
the school.
SPECIAL EDUCATION UPDATE
Currently students who require additional program support are assisted
by our Special Education teachers and Educational Resource workers.
Student programs are supported in a variety of ways to develop and/or
enhance learning opportunities. Periodically, students are presented at a
school TEAM meeting for further consultation and planning. The
following personnel may attend the Special Services TEAM meeting:
Psychology staff member, Speech and Language Pathologist, Social
Worker, Child and Youth Worker. At these meetings, staff summarizes
their observations, concerns and interventions and seeks input regarding
next steps. Possible outcomes could include: new strategies to try in
the classroom; additional services that might be offered; referral for
further assessment or intervention by one of the school Special Services
personnel; referral to an outside agency for further consultation or
assessment. The benefit of a TEAM meeting is the joint consultation
which ensures that the best program is in place to meet the individual
needs of each student. Staff will contact parents prior to these meetings
and will report any recommendations to parents pending the outcome of
the meeting.
This year’s theme is
“Walking in the Light of Christ ”
Five sub-themes, one for each of the
five days of Catholic Education Week
2012, help students to understand the
rich meaning of this year’s theme:
Day 1… The Spirit of Hospitality
Day 2… The Spirit of Understanding
Day 3… The Spirit of Wisdom
Day 4… The Spirit of Justice
Day 5… The Spirit of Gratitude
INDOOR SHOES REQUIRED
Please ensure that students keep a pair of running shoes or other
appropriate footwear at school, so that their feet remain dry and clean at
all times. Because so many areas of our schoolyard can be quite muddy
at certain times of the year, this really helps in keeping mud and dirt out
of the classrooms. Also, in the event that we need to quickly evacuate
the school, students will not have time to put on outdoor shoes, so
having indoor footwear is most advantageous.
EQAO PRIMARY AND JUNIOR SPRING ASSESSMENT
All grades three and six students in Ontario will again be participating in
the provincial assessments scheduled to take place during the week of:
(Grade 3) Monday May 28 to Friday June 1, 2012 (Grade 6) June 4-8,
2012. It is very important that all grade three and six students
participate fully in this assessment.
Therefore, we kindly ask that parents try
to avoid medical or dental appointments
during the assessment periods. Watch
for more details closer to the assessment
dates.
Writing With Your Child
*Demonstrate ways in which you use writing in every day life.
* Writing may include: lists, invitations, friendly letters, journal,

EQAO Parent Tips: Strategies for
Success


Stay Positive







Always celebrate your child’s
successes and hard work each
day.
Remind your child that the
assessment will have questions
asking them things that they have
already learned in class.
Please avoid scheduling
appointments during EQAO.
Be your child receives enough
sleep every night so that they are
rested.
During test days ensure that your
child eats a healthy full breakfast
and remember to keep a positive
and relaxed attitude in the home
environment.
Do not force your child to study
for these tests. They are already
working hard at school.
For additional information on
grades 3 and 6 testing visit the
EQAO website at
www.eqao.com and click on
“Parent Resources”.
Reading With Your Child




Remember to keep reading fun
and share how much you like to
read. Parents are the best role
models to demonstrate love of
reading. Children learn by
example.
Encourage your child to read a
variety of texts including fiction
and non-fiction.
Have your child orally reflect,
relate and retell what you are
reading.
Reading with your child may
also include: newspapers, menus,
magazines, e-mails, recipes,
maps and the like.

Play with numbers.
Do mental calculations such as estimating grocery or restaurant
bills. How much of a tip do we give our pizza delivery person?
Demonstrate to your child the practical uses of mathematics in
daily life. For example, shopping, cooking, building, sewing
and the like.
Encourage your child to communicate their answers using
pictures, numbers and words.
Something to Remember:
Although EQAO offers important information about your child’s
learning, it is only one part of the puzzle. The levels achieved on EQAO
will not be a part of your child’s report card. The results of your child’s
EQAO scores will be provided to each family in the fall.

GREEN SCHOOL
INITIATIVES: e-mail
In September, parents were informed that
we are attempting to reduce the overall
use of paper in the school. This is a
monumental task, particularly when
fostering communication between the
home and the school. We encouraged
families to make more active use of the
school website, for school information,
updates, special events, liturgies, masses,
education excursions, monthly school
newsletter and the like. The school
website is updated regularly and has
links to a number of related sites
including Dufferin-Peel Catholic District
School Board home page. Also, parents
were invited to sign-up to receive oneway e-mail messages from the
principal with regular updates of school
and liturgical events, curriculum items of
interest, helpful suggestions for parent
engagement in son/daughter’s learning
and education in general.
Currently we have 155 families who
regularly receive e-mails from the
school. If you are interested and wish
to sign up to receive these updates,
please send your e-mail address
(identifying student name, classroom
teacher and parent name) to the main
office.

lunch hour. We would like to thank Ms. Daly and Mrs. Hammond
for organizing and facilitating the intramurals and providing a fun
activity for students to become more physically active during the
lunch time recess.
SCHOOL TRACK & FIELD
Our school’s annual Track & Field day has been planned for Tuesday
May 1, 2012 for grades 4 to 8 students. (The rain date for this event
is Thursday, May 3, 2012)
As in the past, the school’s track & field team is
determined from students’ successes demonstrated at
events over the course of the day. Team members
will then practice in May and June for the Family
Track & Field event that will take place in June.
We wish to express our appreciation to Ms.
Loncarich and Mrs. Hammond who are organizing
these events.
DISPELLING MYTHS
MYTH: Catholic schools are the
same as public schools, except with
religion.
REALITY: While both Catholic and
public schools teach a curriculum
mandated by the Ministry of
Education, our schools are in view
with the Catholic perspective; a lens,
if you will, through which all
curriculum and action is viewed. The
curriculum is enhanced by the gospel
values in the school working together
with home and parish to ensure that
our students are formed in the
traditions of Catholic faith through
spiritual, academic and social
development. (Excerpt from “The
Director’s Bulletin”, Dufferin-Peel
Catholic District School Board, Lent
2011)
PARENT ENGAGEMENT: TIPS
FOR PARENTS
There are many things a parent can do at
home to support their children’s learning
and to develop a positive attitude toward
school:
• Talk with your child about school,
their friends, and every day events.
Show you are interested. ONLY 38%
students polled by ‘People for
Education’ report that parents ask
them about school on a daily basis.
• Read every day with your child
and/or encourage them to read for fun.
Discuss what they have read.
• Monitor your child’s television
viewing and talk with them about the
programs they watch.
• Supervise homework, making sure
your child has a place to work, a set
homework time, and that their assignments are completed.
• Encourage your child to write.
• Encourage exercise and good nutrition.
• Provide learning experiences outside of school. For example, visit
the library, museums, zoo, and historical sites.
• Communicate that education is important and encourage your child
to do well.
• Promote good discipline. Children don’t know intuitively how to
behave; parents must teach them.
