Romanesque period and Gothic period (Year 7)
MEDIEVAL CHURCHES AND CATHEDRALS
Churches were the places where Christian people in Medieval Europe went to pray to God, and where they took
part in all religious festivals during the year. People also went there to get married, for baptisms and for funerals
for example. In the Middle Ages, most churches did not have benches in them, as they have today, and people
stood or walked around during the Mass, or knelt on the stone floor to pray.
The Medieval Church played a far greater role than the Church does today. The churches were built to praise
God and all Medieval people believed that God, Heaven and Hell all existed.
Most really huge Medieval churches in Europe are cathedrals. But cathedrals were not only for religious
ceremonies. When bishops or lords or kings had important things to say to a group of people, they generally met
in the cathedral, which was the biggest place in town that was inside, out of the cold and rain. The cathedrals
also showed the power of the kings, sovereigns and the bishops.
Many of these Medieval churches and cathedrals can be seen in our cities
today. Many cathedrals are about 50 metres high and their towers sometimes
reach a height of more than 100 meters. But how did the people build these
gigantic buildings 600 to 800 years ago?
1
To work on the building of a cathedral was a great honour. The work was done
by Masonic Lodges. These groups of specialists had very strict rules. It was
extremely difficult and dangerous for the masters and the many workmen and
craftsmen. They all had to build the church without modern technology. There
was no electricity and there were no modern machines.
Task 1:
Decide whether the statements 1-4 are ‘true’ (T) or ‘false’ (F). Tick (ü) the correct box.
