Billy Mac Bio It was to Billy’s great fortune to be raised in New Orleans, where he grew up playing and singing alongside the legends of rhythm and blues – cutting his first tapes in the same studios that gave birth to the careers of Little Richard Fats Domino and Allen Toussaint. After graduating from Tulane University, he turned down scholarships to two preeminent law schools to study piano under renowned symphonic jazz composer, Roger Dickerson. Billy Mac's accomplishments won him writing and session playing stints in Muscle Shoals, Nashville and LA, as well as successful runs performing at the Aladdin Hotel and the Rio Suite Hotel in Las Vegas, the legendary Edgewater Hotel in Seattle and the notorious New Orleans Playboy Club. It was in the company of greatness that Billy Mac developed his undeniably soulful sound. The talents that have earned him success as a singer, songwriter, session player and performer are showcased on his just released CD, The Back 9 and also on his previous releases, Tee It Up and Tales of Urban Romance. “Tales” included the Top 10 hit “Better Our Hearts” that he penned for Warner Bros. group, Bandana, and featured many of the songs he’s written for various artists as well as his own hit “The Other Side of Town.” Billy began his journey into golf music with a storied tribute to the game, Tee It Up and the Tee It Up Show, in which he sings the songs that have been honored by the St. Andrews Links Trust, Augusta National Golf Club and The First Tee Children’s Golf Charities to name a few. GOLF Magazine named his song “Augusta, Sweet Augusta” one of the Top 10 golf songs ever written. This groundbreaking marriage of the game to popular song takes the listener across time in both golf history and music and reflects his deep and abiding love for the game. The Back 9 , his latest CD, continues his journey chronicling the highlights and history of the game of golf with incredible breadth and variety –from the Dixieland tribute to Walter Hagen to the zydeco homage to Jay and Lionel Hebert to songs honoring Bobby Jones (“The Champions of Eastlake”), Sam Snead (“Slammin’ Sammy Snead”) and Fred Couples (“Boom Boom”). The disc includes a reverent paean to Father’s Day and the U.S. Open (“U.S. Open Sunday”) as well as a soaring reminiscence of the birthplace of golf (“The Belle of St. Andrews”). Billy Mac is a three-‐time recipient of The American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP) Special Award to Songwriters. Billy now lives on a small farm outside of Seattle with his wife, singer Merrilee Rush, and their small herd of Old English Sheepdogs.
