Matthew 2:1-1 2
After Jesus had been born at Bethlehem in Judaea during the reign of
King Herod, suddenly some wise men came to Jerusalem from the east
asking, 'Where is the infant king of the Jews? We saw his star as it rose
and have come to do him homage.'
When King Herod heard this he was perturbed, and so was the whole
of Jerusalem. He called together all the chief priests and the scribes of
the people, and enquired of them where the Christ was to be born.
They to ld him, 'At Bethlehem in Judaea, for this is what
the prophet wrote:
And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, you are by no means
the least among the leaders of Judah, for from you will come a
leader who will shepherd my people Israel.'
Then Herod summoned the wise men to see him privately. He asked
them the exact date on which the star had appeared and sent them on
to Bethlehem with the words, 'Go and find out all about the child, and
when you have found him, let me know, so that I too may go and do
him homage.'
Having listened to what the king had to say, they set out. And
suddenly the star they had seen rising went forward and halted over
the place where the child was. The sight of the star filled them with
delight, and going into the house they saw the child with his mother
Mary, and falling to their knees they did him homage. Then, opening
their treasures, they offered him gifts of gold and frankincense and
myrrh.
But they were given a warning in a dream not to go back to Herod,
and returned to their own country by a different way.

Cantata 65
Sie werden aus Saba alle kommen
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)
Introduction
Bach was Kantor at St Thomas's Leipzig - a post he held for 27years
until his death in 1750, and one of his principal duties was to compose
a Cantata for most Sundays and feast days of the year. These cantatas
(over 200 in number) were based on the readings of the day, with
additional texts - words written specifically to elaborate the themes of
the readings, or else taken from the psalms or from the words of an
existing hymn or chorale.
Bach composed today's Cantata for the Feast of the Epiphany at St
Thomas' Church, Leipzig in 1724.

Cantata 65 is scored for two soloists, four-part choir, recorders, oboes
da caccia (their parts played today upon cors anglais), bassoon,
trumpets, strings and organ continuo.
TIle Lutlleran liturgy, which was followed in the Thomaskirche, nanled the
Epiphanyas 'T7Je Feast of the Three Holy Kings' and the title conjures up
tile picture of Balthazar, Melchior and Caspar as thelJ kneel, one btJ one, to
present tlleir gifts to the Christ-child. T7Je text of tile opening chorus is from
Isaiah; Bach's music per/laps suggests tile great caravan of canJelswith the
kings and tlleir attendants as it passes across the desert.

TIle chorale which follows is actually the fourth verse of tile hymn we have
just sung at Evening Prayer, 'Puer natus in Bethlehem' ('A child is born in
Bethlehem).

The bass recitativo describes the arrival of the Magi, led In) the star to the manger,
and their presentation of the giJts. In similar words to the conclusion of Christina
Rossetti's familiar carol 'In the bleak midwinter', the singer offers the Lord his own
giJt- that of his heart

The Bass singer suggests that gold is too inadequate a gift for the Lord; and that
Christ desires our hearts. not our earthly riches

In his recitativo, the tenor offers the gifts ofhis heart, which he likens to those of the
Magi,

Chorale Prelude on In Dir 1st Freude (In Thee is Gladness)
BWV 615 - J S Bach
A retiring collection will be taken to help defray the expenses of ate event.
Liverpool Bach Collective was formed just a year ago, and it aims to perform
a cantata by J S Bach in a church in the Liverpool area every other month or so
on a Sunday afternoon, as part of an act of worship. The cantatas are chosen
specifically to match the readings of the day.
The next Cantata will be on Sunday 15 February (venue to be announced).
