And I wanted to go swimming with the Great White Sharks. It was wonderful to fulfill many goals while in Australia, but it was amazing to have one of my life-long dreams become a reality. Accommodation The University offers accommodation on campus to study abroad students based at the Lismore and Coffs Harbour campuses. On the Lismore campus SCU provides 4-6 bedroom apartments with each student having a single bedroom and sharing kitchen, living and bathroom areas with their flatmates. Students are required to cook their own meals and no meal plans are available. Students will be required to bring along or purchase bed linen, bath towel, kitchen crockery, cutlery, cooking pots and utensils. If students prefer to live in a house with Australian families they will be assisted in making suitable arrangements. Off campus housing is available at all campuses and the University will provide a list of housing options. Campus locations Southern Cross University is a vibrant university with beautiful campuses at Lismore, Coffs Harbour and the Gold Coast, with additional facilities at nearby Tweed Heads. Lismore This is the University’s main campus. Lismore is a regional city located in the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales, with a population of around 46,000 people. The campus occupies 75 hectares of lush, sub-tropical grounds including landscaped gardens and rainforest walkways. The city has a domestic airport, is a 40-minute drive to Byron Bay and under three hour’s drive to Brisbane. Gold Coast & Tweed Heads The University’s Gold Coast campus is located adjacent to Gold Coast Airport and opposite the beach. Degrees in business, law, tourism and hospitality management are taught at this location. The Gold Coast is one of Australia’s premier tourist destinations. Coffs Harbour Coffs Harbour is a thriving city and popular tourist destination on the Mid North Coast of New South Wales, featuring beautiful beaches and a lush, coastal hinterland. It has a population of about 65,000 people. Southern Cross University is committed to providing all students with the support services necessary to ensure a successful academic and personal experience. The staff–student ratio in the International Office is among the best at any university in Australia. International students on all three regional campuses are provided with a range of specialist services, which include: pre-departure information, airport pick-up, accommodation assistance, comprehensive orientation, student advisers, learning assistance, social activities, excursions, visa and health insurance advice. Medical and counselling services, careers advice, student clubs and associations, sporting facilities and eateries are available at the Lismore, Gold Coast and Coffs Harbour campuses. Cost of living One of the great advantages of living in Lismore, Coffs Harbour or the Gold Coast is the cheaper cost of living compared with that in Australia’s major capital cities. As a general rule, a budget of A$280-A$385 per week should cover all non-tuition costs associated with studying at the University, including shared accommodation, food, public transport, Overseas Student Health Cover, textbooks and course materials. It should be noted that this does not include purchasing or running a car or bringing family members to Australia. Study Abroad trips Each semester a special subsidised excursion is held for the study abroad students. This trip varies depending on the preferences of students with a range of options available including: Central Australia - Outback, Fraser Island, Surfing Safari, North Coast Adventure. Study Abroad - Shawn Lamb I live in Springfield, Pennsylvania, which is a small city about fifteen minutes from Philadelphia on the east coast of the United States. Back at home I studied Finance with a minor in Management. At SCU I studied Perspectives on Australia, Outdoor Education, Marketing Principles, and International Finance. I came to love the Australian way of life. I enjoyed how friendly everyone was, every person I met was nicer than the next. Australia was laid back and easy going and I enjoyed not being as stressed as I am while in college in the states. I especially enjoyed Perspectives on Australia because I gained an even broader understanding of the history of Australia, and what it means to be an Australian. After being in Australia for only a short time, I definitely hope to go back at some point in my life! This whole Study Abroad experience has been a learning opportunity for me. Every day is a new adventure and you never know what is going to happen next. Be prepared for anything, and don’t live with any fears or regrets. I have made wonderful friends while being here, and I’ve learned that as long as I have them by my side, I know everything is going to be alright!
