Robert L. & Marvell Irby Memorial Chapel
To Be Dedicated, Wednesday March 19th
TOP: is the beautiful new chapel. SECOND ROW: the plaque that has been installed in honor of late Robert L. and Marvell Irby,
whose generous contribution made the project possible. The Irby’s three children have also been extremely helpful with the
plans and design of the facility. Pictured are Marsha Irby Harman, Dr. R. L. “Bob” Irby, Jr., and Peggy Irby Sherrod. Two beautiful
stained glass windows enhance the beauty of the facility. (left) The Rainbow window describes God’s Promise To All Mankind
that the earth would not be destroyed by flood as told in the book of Genesis. (right) The Holy Spirit design was derived from a
mosaic centerpiece in St. Peter’s Basilica of Rome. The dove depicts the Holy Spirit as portrayed in the Bible. The stained glass
artistry and fabrication is by Peggy Irby Sherrod with creative contributions by Marsha Irby Harman and Bob and Carol Irby.
Much needed facility becomes reality
The new chapel at the Holdenville cemetery is completed. To celebrate
this much-needed addition, the city will host an Open House Wednesday,
March 19th beginning at noon. Refreshments will be served and the public
is invited to attend.
The family of the late Dr. R.L. Irby made a generous grant to start the
much needed project. Other donors then came forward providing the additional funds to complete the facility.
There is seating for one hundred people. It will be climate controlled and
restrooms are also in the building.
The purpose of the building is to provide shelter during inclement weather, and it will be available during funeral services. If desired, this building
can be used for the main service, for graveside services, or simply as a
place to gather and visit informally following services.
A special thanks goes to all those who have worked so hard on this project and donated so much. It will be a blessing to countless families for
generations to come.

“Filet mignon, medium rare.”
“A wise choice, madam,” the waiter replied. “And for your

“He’ll have the same.”

· They don’t sell tickets, they sell chances.
· All the insurance machines in the terminal are sold
out.
· Before the flight, the passengers get together and elect
a pilot.
· You cannot board the plane unless you have the exact

· Before you took off, the stewardess tells you to fasten
your Velcro.
· The Captain asks all the passengers to chip in a little
for gas.
· When they pull the steps away, the plane starts
rocking.
· The Captain yells at the ground crew to get the cows
off the runway.
· You ask the Captain how often their planes crash and
he says, “Just once.”
· No movie. Don’t need one. Your life keeps flashing

In my lifetime profanity has gone from rare to regular in
almost every phase of life. The following article, written by
Alex McFarland, is worth reading and sharing . . .
Magic Mountain, an amusement park in Southern California,
is known for a roller coaster named X. Coincidentally, I was
there to speak at a youth event when I overheard an X-rated
conversation—between churched teens no less. It prompted
me to address the issue from stage. I asked, “How many of
you struggle with using bad language?” Many hands went up.
I followed up with questions we’ve all probably considered at
some point: Is it wrong for a Christian to use curse words? If
so, why? And what makes profanity, well, profane?
Entertainment is full of swear words, sexual innuendo and
scatological slang. In a recent study of primetime TV, Parents
Television Council identified more than 11,000 expletives –
twice as many as were used a decade ago. Indeed, in our
coarsening culture, some young people can’t recall a time
when f-bombs weren’t part of “normal” discourse. Kids use
it because they’ve grown up hearing profanity and having it
reinforced by the media. And somehow it becomes a personal
habit that even Christian teens may consider acceptable in
certain situations.
I’ve heard people argue that words are just sounds to which
we attach meaning but to deny the power of language, one
must argue the point with what? With words. And those
combinations of letters and sounds assume that meaning
will be conveyed, heard and grasped. You assume that your
listener understands what you’re saying. We can’t get around
the fact that words contain meaning.
Words also yield consequences. For proof that language
matters, consider that we have an entire lexicon associated
with their misuse: fraud, slander, libel, perjury, harassment,
defamation. For those who deny the objective nature of
language, I suggest that they don’t test their position by
publicly making a joke about harming the president or jest
about explosives while riding on an airplane. A U.S. Marshal
will be summoned to quickly help the grasp that, yes, words
have meaning. The ways people abuse words have social,
legal and even spiritual implication.
All to Jesus I Surrender
The Bible reminds us that our words should honor God
and benefit others. Ephesians 4:29 says, “Do not let any
unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is
helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it
may benefit those who listen.” James 1:26 warns us to keep
a tight rein on our tongues, while Colossians 3:8 says, “Rid
yourselves of all things such as these: anger, rage, malice,
slander and filthy language from your lips.”
Regarding the use of coarse language by believers, some
people contend that since Christ has made us free, how we
say things doesn’t really matter. While salvation sets us free
from the penalty of sin, freedom doesn’t equal license. In fact,
the Bible makes it clear that Christians have an obligation
to pursue holiness (Ephesians 4:24; Titus 2; 1 Peter 1:5 and
2:24).
Indeed, God’s ownership of a believer extends even to the
words we use. According to 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 we’re
mere stewards. Jesus Christ owns us, including our minds and
mouths. Spiritual maturity requires that we yield everything
to God.
Judged by the Words We Use
Teens should submit their vocabularies to the lordship of
Christ, in part because God is always listening. His grace is
perfect, but if words didn’t matter Jesus wouldn’t have said,
“I tell you that men will have to give account on the day of
judgment for every careless word they have spoken. For by
your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will
be condemned” (Matthew 12:36-37).
Profane means “unholy” or “unwholesome.” Some types of
speech are literally unholy. Spouting certain four-letter words
can hinder spiritual growth, harm relationships with others and undermine our credibility as
bearers of Gospel truth.
Christians possess an advantage by having a pure well of words from which to draw. Years
ago, as a new believer working my way through college, a superior noticed that I didn’t tell
off-color jokes or use foul language like others in that workplace. Not only did this create a
witnessing opportunity, but I was promoted to a level that no 21-year-old had ever held in that
company. My boss later told me that my habit of avoiding profanity led him to promote me.
Every communicator has thousands of words at his or her disposal. In the quest for individuality
and self-expression, there’s no shortage of raw material. So talk! But do so only in ways that
speak well of ourselves, of others and of the Savior.
—CC—
And speaking of bad language . . .
Home from college at semester break, a girl told her mother that she was going to a movie
that evening with other college students. Under questioning, she admitted that “the movie had
some bad language, but they won’t hurt me.”
At that moment, the mother was making a tossed salad. With her daughter looking, on she
quietly fished out a handful of garbage and dumped it into the salad.
Horrified, the girl exclaimed, “Mother, why did you do that?”
Came the reply, “Since you don’t seem to mind filling your mind with garbage, I thought you
wouldn’t mind filling your stomach, too.”

Today In History . . .
On March 12, 1947, President Harry Truman went before Congress to request $400 million
to help Greece and Turkey resist Communist-led rebels bent on overthrowing their governments.
The president laid out a policy that became known as the Truman Doctrine—a pledge that the
United States would help nations struggling to resist anti-democratic forces. Truman’s words
still resonate, and are still important:
At the present moment in world history nearly every nation must choose between alternative
ways of life. The choice is too often not a free one.
One way of life is based upon the will of the majority, and is distinguished by free institutions,
representative government, free elections, guarantees of individual liberty, freedom of speech
and religion, and freedom from political oppression.
The second way of life is based upon the will of a minority forcibly imposed upon the
majority. It relies upon terror and oppression, a controlled press and radio, fixed elections, and
the suppression of personal freedoms.
I believe that it must be the policy of the United States to support free peoples who are
resisting attempted subjugation by armed minorities or by outside pressures . . .
The seed of totalitarian regimes are nurtured by misery and want. They spread and grow in
the evil soil of poverty and strife. They reach their full growth when the hope of a people for a
better life has died. We must keep that hope alive.
The free peoples of the world look to us for support in maintaining their freedoms.
If we falter in our leadership, we may endanger the peace of the world—and we shall surely
endanger the welfare of our own nation.
Other Highlights In History This Week . . .
1755—The first known use of a steam engine in the United States takes place at a New
Jersey copper mine, where it is used to pump water from the mine.
1912—Juliette Gordon Low founds the Girl Scouts of the U.S.A. in Savannah, Georgia
1923—The first motion picture with sound recorded on film is demonstrated in Los Angeles;
it shows people dancing to music but has no dialogue.
1933—In the first of his radio “fireside chats,” President Franklin Delano Roosevelt urges
Depression- weary Americans to have faith in U.S. banks.
1947—President Harry Truman establishes the Truman Doctrine.
Thought For The Week . . .
There are three kinds of givers—the flint, the sponge and the honeycomb.
To get anything out of the FLINT you must hammer it. And then you get only chips and
sparks.
To get water out of a SPONGE you must squeeze it, and the more pressure you use, the
more you will get.
But the HONEYCOMB just overflows with its own sweetness.

THE ABOVE PICTURE WAS TAKEN IN THE EARLY 1900’s ON MAIN STREET IN DOWNTOWN HOLDENVILLE. In fact, the building still
stands at the corner of Main and Broadway. In the picture the names that we were able to read on the windows are Frank Warren-Lawyer,
J.R. Witty-Lawyer, H.B. ? Lawyer, and C.R. Nix and Co. Real Estate and Loans. The bottom part of the building was the bank.
Both Sides of the Track
the year was 1964
The late Charles Kemmerrer was a good friend
of ours. For several years
he wrote a monthly column
called “Both Sides of the
Track.”
We recently found a column from 1964 about a Wetumka banker, Harve Holman. His daughter Jeanette
and her husband Ed George
were good friends of ours.
Hopefully our readers will
enjoy the story as much as
we did.
Both Sides of the Tracks
Ed George has many
“claims to fame” but his
greatest claim is that of his
father-in-law, Harvey Holman, who was Wetumka’s
best-known banker, in his
day.
Harve Holman was born
98 years ago in Monroe,
LA, moving at a tender age
to Thackerville, then to Atwood, which at that time
was called Mayberry. H.H.
Holman’s father was postmaster at Atwood for a period, then the family moved
to Gerty along with the parents of Dr. C.A. Hicks and
the late J.I. Givens.
We like stories about men
who were able to achieve
much in life with little “formal education” and H.H.
Holman was one of these—
self educated, somewhat
like Abraham Lincoln,
yet for a while the pioneer
taught school to the Indians
at the Government Creek
Indian Boarding School,
part of which still remains
northeast of Wetumka today. While teaching, the
young man was further educating himself by taking
short courses in business
and banking, which were
ultimately his ambitions.
Records indicate that H.H.
Holman owned a “General
Store” with a post office in
the rear at Wetumka, which,
at that early date (about
1898) was located about a
mile southeast of the present Wetumka. The Frisco
Railroad came through
the country and Wetumka
“came to the railroad.” In
1900 Holman organized the
First National Bank of Wetumka, and remained President of this bank until his
untimely death in 1923.
Those who know the history of Wetumka and the
banking business of that era
tell us that Harve Holman
“set the pattern” for good,
solid, yet aggressive banking and was responsible, to
a great extent, for the rapid
growth of that northern
Hughes County community.
Holman’s ability to make
wise, quick decisions had
an influence on such men
as J.W. (Bill) Nicks, Dave
Peixotto, K.V. (Kermit)
Love, Dixie Hall, S.M. (Sid)
Puryear, and many others
who were either associated
with, or competitors of the
astute banker.
In the lobby of the newlydecorated bank at Wetumka
is an old pan-o-ramic picture of the main intersection
of that city, taken about the
time of Holman’s hey-day.
There are three banks in the
picture, all three at the same
intersection.
Holman’s
bank was on the southwest
corner.
Mr. Holman and several
others organized the Methodist Church at Wetumka.
This was in 1898. In 1900
(records show) the church
held a revival calling upon
Reverend A.T. Galloway,
who also brought with him
his winsome niece as organist. Before too long the
young Holman had decided
on his mate and later, in
1900, they were united in
marriage—Miss Theresa
Jeanette Galloway became
the bride of H.H. Holman.
Mrs. Holman lives today at
Norman and “keeps house”
(and memories) for herself.
H.H. Holman was then
Alternate Delegate to our
Constitutional Convention
(in 1907, at Statehood) and
was our first State Senator
from the old Hughes, Okfuskee Districts. Holman’s
life history reads like a fairytale. It is hard to understand
how a man can give so much
time to politics, religion, the
youth of his day, the establishment of schools, and every other worthwhile project
and still have time for his
family of four children and
his business ventures, which
were strong and great. All of
Holman’s children, after his
death, received degrees from
his beloved Oklahoma University, which, as Senator, he
had assisted in establishing.
Surviving today in Holdenville are a sister, Mrs. Jack
Gordy, and a daughter, Mrs.
Jeanette George. His wife
proudly carries on and three
of his four children are living
in Norman and California.
Yes, “Gentleman George,”
as we fondly call Ed, has a
claim to fame—his daddyin-law was a genuine pioneer in the rough, raw days
of Oklahoma. H.H. Holman
helped “tame” us.

Threads of Life
Coon Hunting
by Cleo Emerson LeVally
Saw in the newspapers
that more than 600 Coon
Hunters from 26 states met
the 2nd week in February to
compete for large prizes in
this sport. Reading this story
brought back lot of memories for me.
When I was in High
School, A. P. Boyd, a farmer
brought into town a wagon
load of cured hides for sale.
It was out of season for hunting Racoons. These hides
had been cured and dressed.
He wanted to sell them. I do
remember that he was asking
30 cents each for the hides.
There was a Game Warden
there who also went coon
hunting in season and he
priced his hides at 35 cents
each when he sold them. I
think his name was Chilly
Compton. These names may
be wrong but they are as I
remember them today.
\ Well, since it was out of
season, the farmer was arrested. A trial was held. Six
farmers were chosen as jurors. After evidence waspresented the jurors went out
to deliberate and came back
with a not guilty verdict.
Pipeliners’
Annual
Reunion
The Annual Pipeliners’
Reunion will be held at the
Lamar Community Center on Saturday, March 15.
All pipeliners are welcome.
Lunch will be served at
11:30.
Chilly Compton owned a
hardware store in town and
he received a lot of criticism for the arrest he had
made and people began to
quit trading at his store. He
eventually sold out and left
town. I also remember that
sometimes high school boys
would come to school with
skunk smell on them. This
was a result of these coon
hunts that found something
other that coons to track
down.
I had another experience
with coon hunting when I
was a photographer. I was
called out one night to photograph some coon hunters
who were getting ready to
go out on a hunt. Two of the
men had donkeys that they
took on these hunts and
they wanted some pictures
of them running with the
dogs who were used for the
hunt. These donkeys never
stopped for a fence after the
hunt got underway and the
owners waned some pictures of their donkeys jumping the fence after the dogs.
It was fun and a new experience for me. It was almost
as good as being called out
by the local sheriff when he
went out to break up a still.
Those trips make another
good story.

Cub Scout Pack 456 Holds Blue & Gold Banquet
By Kathy Radach
Cub Scout Pack 456
held its annual Blue and
Gold Banquet at the
monthly Pack Meeting
on February 24th. About
50 proud parents, family
members and friends
gathered in the Methodist
Church Fellowship Hall
to share the potluck meal
and see the Cub Scouts
receive their awards.
The Wolves and the
Bears presented skits for
the entertainment of the
group. The evening began
with the boys leading the
Pledge of Allegiance, and
ended with the reciting of
the Cub Scout Promise.
Retiring Cub Master
Kathy Radach welcomed
the group and introduced
the Leaders, including
the new Cub Master,
Abbigail Coleman, who
has graciously accepted
the post. Her husband
Bruce will serve with her
as Assistant Cub Master.
The Colemans have years
of experience in Scouting,
and the Troop Committee
is very pleased to have
them leading the Pack.
The Boy Scout Troop
has been struggling to go
camping because of the
weather, but they have
been getting ready to go
as soon as they can. There
is a Camporee planned
in Chandler on March
7-9 that they are hoping
to attend. It has already
been rescheduled once.
Let’s hope it doesn’t
happen again!
Both the Troop and
the Pack are chartered
to the Methodist Church
in Holdenville.
They
meet on Monday nights,
and new members are
welcome at any time.
Boys from 1st grade
through 5th grade are Cub
Scouts. Boys from age
11 to 18 form the Boy
Scout patrols. For further
information, contact the
church at 405-379-2439.

Pastor’s Ponders
While Israel’s seasons are the same as ours, the Jewish calendar is different.
The last month of the Jewish year, Adar, corresponds to our February-March. We
consider February to be a short, intermission month standing between winter and
spring. We celebrate Valentine’s Day and presidential birthdays in February, but
not too much else.
But on the Jewish calendar, Adar (our February) is a time to rejoice! During
Adar, the Jews celebrated (and still do) Purim—the deliverance of the Jews in
Persia from the plans of the wicked official named Haman (Esther 9:18—32). It
is a time to remember that “which was turned from sorrow to joy for them, and
from mourning to a holiday; . . . days of feasting and joy, of sending presents to
one another and gifts to the poor” (Esther 9:22).
If February is nothing but a post-holiday month for you, don’t spend it just waiting for spring. Take the opportunity this month to rejoice in your own deliverance
“from the power of darkness . . . into the kingdom of the Son . . . in whom we have
redemption through His blood” (Colossians 1:13-14). There is no greater reason
to rejoice!
