Item 3 Ranking of States in Brazil by Export Amounts for 2008 and 2010 FOREIGN TRADE OF THE STATE OF MATO GROSSO EVOLUTION OF EXPORTS OF THE STATE OF MATO GROSSO 2001-2010 At the end of the 1980s, the State of Mato Grosso held 10th place among exporting states, and first place within the context of the Midwest Region. In 2003, exports from Mato Grosso stood at around US$2.186 billion, growing by about 21.74% over the previous year when the figure was US$1.796 billion. Also beginning in 2003, and with a constant upward trend and an average growth rate of approximately 22.15% a year, exports reached U$7,812 billion in 2008, the biggest positive variation for the period under analysis. US$billions FOB Evolution of Exports from MT 2001 - 2010 Period Source: MDIC-SECEX-Alice System - SICME The economic crisis sparked a sharp reduction in the growth of the developed economies between 2008 and 2009, also affecting the developing economies. Average growth in the developed economies was 0.5%, in 2008, and -3.2%, in 2009, while the economies of the developing countries grew by 6.1%, in 2008, and 2.4%, in 2009. In 2009, growth in the developing countries was due in the main to the sharp pace of growth in Asia. China grew by 8.7%, in 2009, with exports from Mato Grosso to that Asian country rising by 52.97%, reaching US$2.360 billion, accounting for 28% of the entire exports of Mato Grosso in the period. Taking the year 2001 as the base, the chart shows that total exports from the state rose by 505% in the period. In spite of the crisis, exports from Mato Grosso still rose by 9% over that period. In recent years Mato Grosso has taken center stage among Brazil’s major exporting states. Traditionally taking 10th position, the state jumped to 6th place in the national ranking in 2009. The European Union was the primary destination of state shipments in 2008, totaling US$3.14 billion, or a share of 42.42%. Asia accounted for 35% of the state exports, or US$2.73 billion. This amount represented an 88.7% increase on the previous year. Soybeans and its by-products, with US$5.49 billion, accounted for approximately 70% of state exports. Exports of beef totaled US$941.6 million, or 12%, exports of corn totaled US$566.4 million (7.25%) and exports of cotton totaled US$435.7 million (5.56%). In 2009, Brazilian exports decreased 22.7% against 2008. On the opposite direction, the State of Mato Grosso recorded exports of US$8.49 billion, an 8.74% growth against the previous year. However, when analyzing the physical quantity exported, one can notice that growth in the same period totaled 29.5%. This means that there was a drop in the international price of products exported as compared with the price in the previous year and, consequently, a reduction in net revenue for the producer. Asia, with US$3.83 became the primary destination of exports from Mato Grosso, accounting for 45% of shipments. They practically suffered no impact from the international crisis and, in the year, increased their imports from the state by 40% against 2008. The European Union, greatly hit by the worldwide crisis, recorded a decrease of 15.3 in its imports from the State in the year, accounting for 33%, or USS2.8 billion in purchases.
