~ Open Invitation ~ The Nacc Lobby Pre-Show This year the Northern Arts and Cultural Centre will showcase local performers in the lobby an hour before NACC presentations. During this time patrons will have the ability to sit and socialize while enjoying a beverage and/or a light snack with friends. This is a great way to meet up before a show and take in the ambiance of our beautiful atrium. Monthly Art Exhibit Every month NACC will have an art exhibit in the lobby that will be on display during our presentations. Artwork will be available for purchase, with the majority of the proceeds going to the exhibiting artist. NACC Candle Ice CafÉ Our concession will be selling wine, beer, and coffee as well as pop and juice. This season we are also excited to be offering cheese trays with optional sides of charcuterie, chutney, and/or baguette. We will continue to offer baked goods, chips, and chocolate bars. E-Bay Store (http://stores.ebay.ca/naccnt) Artwork that has been donated to NACC over the last 29 years is available for purchase on our e-bay store. A selection of the pieces will also be on display in the NACC foyer in the entrance to the theatre at all our shows. All purchases will be considered a donation to NACC in support of the arts, and buyers will be issued a charitable tax receipt. Tagaq, along with percussionist Jean Martin and violinist Jesse Zubot, performs a live accompaniment to the film’s silent images of life in an early 20th-century Inuit community in Northern Quebec. They also won the 2010 JUNO Award for Best Composition. NACC Special Show Penderecki String Quartet “The Penderecki String Quartet has become one of the most celebrated chamber ensembles of their generation. The Quartet’s performing schedule takes them annually to concert stages across the Americas, Europe, and Asia. The four Penderecki musicians (now originating from Poland, Canada, and USA) bring their varied yet collective experience to create performances that demonstrate their remarkable range of technical excellence and emotional sweep.” (The Globe and Mail) Recent concert appearances include New York City’s Weill Hall at Carnegie Hall, Los Angeles’ REDCAT at Disney Hall, and Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw. The PSQ appears extensively in Canada, participating in this country’s foremost concert series such as the Ottawa Chamber Music Festival, Festival of the Sound, the Banff Centre, and Toronto Luminato Festival. the Penderecki String Quartet’s large discography includes over three dozen recordings, including the chamber music repertoire of Johannes Brahms on both the Marquis and Eclectra labels, as well as the first all-Canadian release of the six Béla Bartók quartets under the auspices of Chamber Music in Napa Valley. Since the 20th century’s Early Music Revival, he has been a continuing source of repertoire for lutenists and classical guitarists. Nigel North enjoys accompanying singers, and is also an enthusiastic teacher. Following many years of committed teaching in Europe (in London, Berlin and Den Haag) Nigel has since 1999 been Professor of Lute in the “Early Music Institute” at Indiana University, Bloomington, USA from where he continues his varied life as performer and teacher. nigelnorth.com Les Voix Humaines musical complicity has been compared to the skill of two trapeze artists or the telepathic communion of a pair of jazz saxophonists! Manx is often referred to as the “Mysticssippi” Blues Man because of his expertise in melding both East and West music together, and therefore creating musical short stories that wed the Blues with the depth of classical Indian ragas. Over the last 10 years, Harry Manx released 11 albums, and has garnered a room full of awards including, seven Maple Blues Awards, six Juno nominations, the Canadian Folk Award in 2005 for Best Solo Artist, and won CBC Radio’s Great Canadian Blues Award in 2007. Arluk’s shy, haunted Gloria, whose sad, ravaged life we can read in her expression, is equally strong. (Now Magazine) Premiered at the National Arts Centre in 2010 and was the capital theatre’s first co-production with arts organizations in the North. It has since toured to Iqaluit and Pond Inlet Night “Set during one 24-hour period without the sun, Christopher Morris’ Night is an emotionally powerful play that skips over the Northern clichés to cast a frost-covered but unblinking eye on the problems currently faced by the Inuit inhabitants of Canada’s newest territory.” (The Globe and Mail) “Then, there’s the ethereal beauty of the Arctic captured by designer Gillian Gallow in her simple, haunting set – an icecovered telephone pole, its wires strung out over the audience, bringing messages from the North to our Toronto ears.” (The Globe and Mail) Daniella, a Toronto anthropologist, travels to Pond Inlet to repatriate the bones of an Inuk man. She encounters Piuyuq, a woman living in Pond Inlet, and her best friend, Gloria. Their lives briefly intersect as Daniella tries to figure out why she has brought the bones this far, and Piuyuq struggles to deal with her best friend’s suicide. The play takes place over 24 hours of winter darkness. Night is the story of the North and the South, cultures clashing and generation gaps. The play is presented in Inuktitut and English, with appropriate subtitles. To Quark’s surprise, when the egg hatches, what emerges isn’t a bird, but a little girl; he names her Fuchsia. Mini Masterpieces are short, funny, accessible adaptations of literature classics, to help get kids excited about reading! Perry – sax Africville Soulful Jazz February 18th-22nd touring 3 communities NACC Season Show Africville Joe Sealy and his band join with one of the country’s foremost gospel, blues, and jazz singers, Jackie Richardson, for an incredible musical journey. Africville Suite tells the story of Africville, a small community located in Halifax which was ordered destroyed and the residents evicted to build a bridge across the Bedford Basin. The community is a symbol of African Nova Scotia identity and the struggle against racism. Joe Sealy has enjoyed a highly successful career as a musician, composer, recording artist, and radio broadcaster. His Juno Award winning Africville Suite inspired Ron Foley MacDonald of The Halifax Daily News to write: “This may be the most important jazz album released in Canada this year”. Joe has presented “The Africville Suite” in concert venues and at music festivals across Canada, as well as Denmark, Norway, and the USA. Jackie Richardson possesses a powerful and supple voice that is a perfect match for her vibrant stage presence. The awards and nominations for Jackie’s four-decade-long body of work include JUNOs, Geminis, Jessie and Bessies, Maple Blues and a Canadian Black Achievement Award for the Arts. She has starred opposite Christopher Reeve, Sidney Poitier, Jane Seymour, and Keifer Sutherland. This past summer, he sang the role of Nardo in Mozart’s La finta giardiniera at the Merola Opera Program in San Francisco. He also performed with the San Francisco Opera Orchestra, singing works by Mozart, Rossini, and Donizetti. In the summer of 2011, he sang the title role in Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro at Opera NUOVA, and this past year, he sang the title role in Opera McGill’s production of Mozart’s Don Giovanni. Bintner made his debut with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra after winning the Grand Prize in last year’s OSM Standard Life Competition. He also won First Prize in the Trois-Rivières Symphony Orchestra Voice Competition in the spring of 2011. These wins have yielded a number of professional engagements, including concerts with orchestra, recitals across Canada, and recording sessions with the CBC. Gordon is currently pursuing a Masters of Music in Opera and Voice at McGill University’s Schulich School of Music. He studies voice with renowned baritone and pedagogue, Professor Sanford Sylvan, and coaches with acclaimed pianist and vocal coach, Professor Michael McMahon. Vancouver International Mountain Film Festival The Vancouver International Mountain Film Festival Society (VIMFF) incorporated and organized its 1st Annual Festival in 1998. The Festival was initiated with the objective to bring to North Vancouver unique outdoor and mountaineering films that would otherwise not be seen in the city, and to bring together communities of filmmakers and outdoor enthusiasts in a forum where they can discuss topics of mutual interest. Since 1998, VIMFF has evolved from a three-day event at one venue with an audience of 1,700 to a 9-day event in 3 to 4 venues with live presentations, films, photography, live music, and international film and photo competitions. Additionally, VIMFF now travels to about 30 communities with the Best of the Fest Tour, and runs additional shows at the Fall Speaker Series in North Vancouver. Theresa’s dream is to bring her singing to the stage as a paid artist. She has been praised by world class singer Rebecca Caine during her performance in Yellowknife. May 17th | 7:30pm Grey Gritt is a bilingual and aboriginal folk-rocker. A rendez-vous with the unexpected that will leave you smiling. Boo! proposes eleven distinct choreographies. Each piece offers a distinct and renewed movement style. For any given venue, the artistic director composes a program of 4 to 5 choreographies (55-60 minutes), looking to create a progression in the succession of the works, as well as to establish a rhythm and flow that allows the audience to move easily from one universe to another. This concept offers young audiences a variety of choreographic proposals, and exposes them to a range of contemporary dance in the same program. This à la carte formula also allows for keeping in mind the target audience and/or the technical conditions of the theatre where the production will be presented when choosing the program.
