In April, Frederick Reads is thrilled to welcome Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter Rosanne Cash. A distinguished and beloved musician, Cash’s discography consists of 15 studio albums including her newest CD, The River & The Thread, which was released in January. She is the author of four books and her essays have been featured in The New York Times and other major publications. Cash’s visit to Frederick for appearances and book signings will enchant audiences of all ages. SPONSORS Delaplaine Visual Arts Education Center, Downtown Frederick Partnership, Frederick County Public Schools, The Frederick News-Post, Frederick Women’s Civic Club, Literacy Council of Frederick County, Maryland Center for the Book at the Maryland Humanities Council, Maryland Public Television, Plamondon Hospitality Partners, Tourism Council of Frederick County, Wilson Information Services Corp. at NCI-Frederick, and other organizations and individuals. www.fcpl.org Frederick Reads Rosanne Cash Rosanne Cash just might be the living epitome of our 2014 Frederick Reads theme—The Music of Language. Passionate, intelligent, honest, and witty, she has led an extraordinary life as a brain surgery survivor, an award-winning singer-songwriter, an accomplished author, and a daughter of the legendary Johnny Cash. Cash, who early in life wasn’t sure she wanted to be involved in the music industry, has risen through the ranks to become a cherished singer-songwriter. Her music weaves tales of love and heartbreak, delves into themes of the American South, tells narratives of her family’s storied musical history, and draws on many genres including country, folk, pop, rock, and blues. Cash’s story is one of an artist finding herself while stepping out of the shadow of her famous, but troubled, father. Using music and the written word to navigate life and tell her story, her works are a testament to the power of art, music, and love in surviving hardships, obstacles, and the loss of loved ones. Cash won a Grammy Award in 1985 and has been nominated 12 more times. She is also the author of four books, including the New York Times bestselling memoir Composed, the children’s book Penelope Jane: A Fairy’s Tale, and the books Bodies of Water and Songs Without Rhyme: Prose by Celebrated Songwriters. In addition, her essays have appeared in The New York Times, Rolling Stone, New York Magazine, and other major publications. Each year, the Frederick Reads Committee—composed of representatives from nearly 20 local organizations—selects an author to showcase a chosen theme, engage new and long-time book lovers, and spark discussion and debate across a range of issues. ON MY NIGHTSTAND Ken Coffey Vice President and Chief Development Officer Frederick Regional Healthcare System About a year ago, a friend insisted that I read The Art of Racing In The Rain by Garth Stein. Due to a lack of time, I don’t often read books. However, I do enjoy listening to books. I called the C. Burr Artz Library to see if they had this book on CD. They did! I listened to it. I loved it! In addition to all the other great things at our public library, the audio book collection is very impressive. Thank you FCPL! Pete McCarthy Digital/Community Engagement Editor The Frederick News-Post Once you’ve stepped inside a courtroom as a newspaper reporter to cover a murder trial, you can’t help but become interested in crime stories. The action and suspense are all there, and it’s your job to tell that story to your readers. And now that I am involved in the digital side of things, I can’t help but start reading books using my Nook. This most recent one, Gone by James Patterson and Michael Ledwidge, tells the story of a crime boss who is committed to taking down his competitors. The federal government cannot regain control, and the only person who understands this kingpin is now holed up on a ranch with the help of the witness protection program. The story of this methodical killer’s every move keeps you on the edge of your seat and leaves you uncertain of what will happen next. Patterson is known for his crime dramas, and each one has a believable plot that you could picture unfolding one day in a courtroom. Jennifer Gerlock Marketing Director Graphcom, Inc At any given time I can be found with a few books in tow. At the moment I’m juggling two — Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott and This is Where I Leave You by Jonathan Tropper. I first experienced This is Where I Leave You as an audiobook and enjoyed it so much that I decided to pick up the book as well. Filled with fantastically flawed, real characters and situations that stay with you long after the book is over, it is simultaneously hilarious, bittersweet and hopeful. This is my first time reading Lamott, although I’ve heard many of my writer friends cite her as their inspiration. Bird by Bird: Some Instructions on Writing and Life is not only incredibly witty, but also informative because Lamott is extremely generous with her thoughts, feelings and expertise on writing. For aspiring writers everywhere, Bird by Bird is a treasure, for sure.
