History of the Tournament
Drive for Hope combines the Brian Howell Lung Cancer Research Golf Open and
the Sue & Eugene Hanmer Memorial Golf Outing, and honors the memory of Linda Aplas
Johnson, late wife of CUES’ president/CEO Fred Johnson.
Fred Johnson, whose wife Linda was then battling lung cancer, became involved with the
UWCCC. He and his employees at the Credit Union Executives Society (CUES) wanted to
help raise funds and awareness for lung cancer research by using their experience planning
golf tournaments to take the newly combined golf outing to the next level. Thus, the Drive for
Hope annual golf outing was born.
Today, we continue to honor the memories of Brian Howell, Sue and Eugene Hanmer, and
Linda Aplas Johnson, as well as all those who are fighting, or have fought, lung cancer.

◆HOPE
The money raised for
Drive for Hope will help
Thank you for supporting
the 9th annual Drive for Hope.
Your generous donations will provide lung cancer patients at the
University of Wisconsin Carbone Cancer Center (UWCCC) the gift
of “one more.” That’s one more ice cream sundae shared with a
loved one; one more ride in a convertible on a sunny day; one more
opportunity to say “I love you.”

In Memory
We would like to remember the following individuals, who inspired this event.
Brian Howell
Brian D. Howell died at age 53 on November 23, 2003, after
a brave fight with lung cancer. He was the loving husband of
Pat (nee Andries); and the devoted father of Katie, Allison and
Joseph. In 1997, he became editor of Madison Magazine.
“Our work to increase lung cancer research began while
Brian was still alive,” his widow, Pat says. “We have a long way
to go to help create hope for others.”
Linda Johnson
Linda Aplas Johnson, age 56,
passed away on February 14, 2006,
in the care of her family after a yearlong
battle with lung cancer. She was married
to Fred B. Johnson, (LTC, USA Ret.)
on February 17, 1985, at West Point, N.Y.,
after a “whirlwind” courtship of three
months. One in five women who are
diagnosed with lung cancer have never
smoked. Linda Johnson was a
member of this minority.
Sue and Gene Hanmer
Sue faced her battle with breast cancer courageously and she
never gave up hope that someday, somehow they would find a
treatment or cure that would help her go on living.
Gene supported his wife through her illness and soon after her
death, faced his own battle with lung cancer. He fought hard
and died with the dream that someday others would benefit
from what he went through.
Dave Grant
Dave Grant played in the debut Drive for
Hope tournament and made a lasting
impression on all those who met him that
day. At the time of the tournament,
Dave had been free of lung cancer for
five years. Sadly, Dave lost his battle with
cancer and passed away on
February 14, 2007, at the age of 63.
CUES is proud to be a sponsor
of Drive for Hope and support
the University of Wisconsin
Carbone Cancer Center.
We are honored to take part
in this tournament and to help
make a meaningful difference
in the lives of those who have
been affected by lung cancer.
Jodi Lou Rickert
Jodi was diagnosed with lung cancer at
the age of 34. As a non-smoker, she was
in complete disbelief. Before she
passed away, she created the
“The Jodi Lou Lung Cancer Fund”
at the UW Carbone Cancer Center.

Lung Cancer Funding
There is an acute need to advance scientific theories
and translate them into new, effective patient treatments.
Help us bridge the gap between promising research and
innovative patient care.
Our vision is to create more effective treatment and
detection methods from new science by funding pilot
research projects. Your support will forever change the
lives of so many patients and families and will help ensure
our tradition of cancer research excellence.
Partner with us by investing in the UW Carbone Cancer
Center (UWCCC) and the future of lung cancer research
and treatment.
