HELTON
John Helton was born in New York in 1964. He has lived and worked on
the West Coast since 1986.
Helton’s signature site-specific sculptural installations engage
seamlessly with the environment at hand and reflect his lifelong passion
for the natural world. He is also accomplished in multiple genres as
a painter, designer and writer though his preferred medium is bronze,
chosen for its permanence.
Helton received a BFA from Parson’s School of Design in New York.
Since then he has exhibited widely in the Western states of Colorado
and Utah.
Various site-specific works can be experienced at Marriott Hotels
at Mall of America and Mankato in Minnesota; University Square at
Michigan State University; Park City Municipal Corporation in Park City,
Utah; Eccles Center For The Performing Arts in Park City, Utah; Old
Waverly Golf Club in West Point, Mississippi; United States Air Force
Base in Park City, Utah as well as in Quito, Ecuador, Barcelona, Spain,
Portland, Oregon, Miami, Florida, Salt Lake City, Utah, Chicago, Illinois,
Austin Texas, Pasadena, California, Princeton, New Jersey and Cable,
Wisconsin.
Much of the artist’s work is done through a private commission basis,
which allows him to create sculptures that collaborate with their
surroundings in a mutually harmonic dance.

BIOGRAPHY
JOHN HELTON
ARTIST’S STATEMENT
“The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the
source of all true art and science.” - Albert Einstein
I remember the moment in 8th grade science class when I learned
that matter could neither be created nor destroyed. My view of the
world changed forever. From that moment, I became aware of an
interconnected world beyond comprehension. I began to see connections
and parallels everywhere and learned to appreciate the invisible. My
sculptures enable the viewer to participate in the celebration of the
elegant balance and rhythm of the vast symphony of energy that is our
world.
SITE SPECIFIC WORK
“Creating art work for a singular location is rewarding because my work
is as much about the space around the piece as it is about the sculpture
itself,” says John.
This philosophy lends itself well to site-specific commissions where
John’s work is given the opportunity to contemplate the notion that our
world is comprised of an infinite web of forces, conditions and patterns
swirling around us, interacting and affecting each other at any given
moment. By embracing each unique location with this exploration in
mind, he is able to create something entirely intrinsic to the environment
at hand while also capturing a moment in space-time continuum that
shows the grace and beauty of what may seem like arbitrary chaos.
This becomes visually articulated through paths that cross, gravitate
together, then stretch outward into infinity; lines that mesh and
converge before reaching towards points of departure; movement
and composition visually extending out beyond the perimeter of the
sculptures, enveloping the surrounding space. It is also experienced
through the artwork’s reflection within and interaction with adjacent
landscape and architecture. Whether the sculpture is indoor or outdoor,
low and encompassing, tall and thin, or displayed on an elevated base,
the site-specific pieces are designed to enhance the atmosphere they
occupy.
A consummate professional, John has worked with many individual
parties, collectors, contractors, architects and designers over the years
to assist in the elevation of personal and public space through fine
art. Various site-specific works can be experienced at Marriott Hotels
at Mall of America and Mankato in Minnesota; University Square at
Minnesota State University; Park City Municipal Corporation in Park
City, Utah; Eccles Center For The Performing Arts in Park City, Utah;
Old Waverly Golf Club in West Point, Mississippi, as well as in Quito,
Equador, Barcelona, Spain, Portland, Oregon, Miami, Florida, Salt
Lake City, Utah, Chicago, Illinois, Austin Texas, Pasadena, California,
Princeton, New Jersey and Cable, Wisconsin.
