Letter from the Chair of the Board of Directors
January 20, 2016
Ladies and Gentlemen:
Welcome to MMTC’s 7th Annual Broadband and Social Justice Summit. It is a pleasure to
welcome the steadfast supporters who have stood firmly by our side over the years, as well as the
new friends who are joining us on the journey.
The Summit is the preeminent national gathering of entrepreneurs, investors, lenders, regulators,
and legislators focused on multicultural media, high tech, and telecom ownership, and closing the
digital divide.
As we celebrate our 30th Anniversary this year, our theme, Thirty Years of Changing Channels:
Platforms for the Future, reflects MMTC’s pivotal role as a connector of diverse communities to
capital, job opportunities, and policies that support entrepreneurs and communities of color. The
driving focus of this year’s Summit is how multicultural media and telecom ownership serves as a
platform for economic growth, job creation, and innovation in the nation’s most influential industries.
We also focus on the impact of media images on multicultural communities, what’s driving supplier
diversity, the importance of mining untapped multicultural talent, and opportunities for wealthcreation for multicultural entrepreneurs.
I would like to thank all of our participants, including the FCC commissioners, leaders from the
Obama Administration and the Hill, and corporate and nonprofit leaders who are lending their
expertise to the Summit.
I would like to convey our deepest appreciation to all of our sponsors, especially our Gold
Sponsors, AT&T, BIA Kelsey, Comcast, and SNL Kagan; and our Silver Sponsors, NCTA and
Verizon. This Summit would not be possible without them.
Thanks, too, to our Executive Committee, Board of Directors, Board of Advisors, Best Minds Policy
Committee, and Telecom Policy Taskforce for giving MMTC so much of their time and wisdom over
the years. Thanks also to our talented MMTC staff, led by our extraordinary President and CEO,
Kim Keenan; Vice President and COO, Maurita Coley; Vice President and Chief Research and
Policy Officer, Dr. Nicol Turner-Lee; and President Emeritus, David Honig.
Since we were founded in 1986, MMTC has done its very best to advance the interests of diverse
communities in media, telecom, and broadband policy debates in Washington, DC. This is
profoundly challenging work for an organization with limited human and fiscal resources. Your
support and participation are much needed and always appreciated.
I hope you have a great Summit and thank you for joining us.
Sincerely,
Julia L. Johnson

Welcome Letter from President and CEO
January 20, 2016
Welcome to the 7th Annual Broadband and Social Justice Summit. As we celebrate our
30th Anniversary, this year’s theme, Thirty Years of Changing Channels: Platforms for the
Future, reflects the many milestones we have achieved in advancing our mission to promote
entrepreneurship and community advancement amidst the challenges and the opportunities
presented by a digital economy.
Thanks to our work over the last thirty years, minorities, women, and low-income communities have
greater opportunities for economic empowerment and participation in our nation’s most important
industries. Families will now benefit from lower prison phone rates rates which will alleviate the
“tax on pain” for those with incarcerated loved-ones. The broadcast foreign ownership review
process has been streamlined and standardized to enable opportunities for diverse entrepreneurs
to obtain an equitable stake in broadcast ownership. Our advocacy is evident in the FCC’s
expansion of the Lifeline Program, which will subsidize the cost of Internet at home for low-income
families. For over thirty years, we have trained and deployed over 50 fellows for civil rights and
communications careers. And today, we continue the process of training the next generation of
advocates to create business opportunities for MWBEs and eliminate access and proficiency
disparities, particularly those that impact communities of color.
Our non-profit brokerage, the brainchild of our founder, David Honig, continues to promote and
protect multicultural ownership in communities throughout the nation, totaling nearly $2 billion in
media and telecom asset value brokered to-date. Our extraordinary efforts continue to rank us at
the top of all media brokers in the nation.
At this year’s Summit, in continuation of this great work, we have invited community and industry
leaders, entrepreneurs, and law and policymakers to discuss the cutting edge issues that impact
broadband deployment, diversity, and policy in the telecommunications and tech arena.
Whether your goal is to participate in efforts to improve diversity in the industry, hear the impact
of the upcoming spectrum auctions on minority broadcast stations, or hear the top lawmakers
discuss developments on the legislative agenda, our goal is to keep you informed, energized, and
engaged.
I would like to extend MMTC’s gratitude and appreciation to all of our many sponsors and
partners, most notably our Gold Sponsors, AT&T, BIA Kelsey, Comcast, and SNL Kagan; our Silver
Sponsors, NCTA, and Verizon; and our Bronze Sponsors, NetCommunications and Politic365. I
would also like to thank our dedicated staff, our Boards, and the BBSJ Host Committee for their
support. You make this conference possible.
We look forward to another thirty years of collaboration to achieve diversity and inclusion in the
media, telecom, and tech industries.
Sincerely,
Kim M. Keenan

rights and social justice leaders will share their expertise on the latest media, telecom, and high tech issues impacting multicultural
communities. Issues to be addressed include:
• How each tech platform can be leveraged to close the wealth gap and the digital divide.
• How to achieve diversity and inclusion in corporate C-suites and boards and in the supply chain.
• The latest developments in the future of broadband for communities of color, including a discussion of distribution
platforms, content, and deployment.
• How FCC, FTC, and legislative policies will impact entrepreneurship, privacy, and quality of life for communities of
color.
• How policies that advance minority entrepreneurship can help stimulate economic opportunity, generate wealth, and
enhance innovation in the nation’s most influential industries.

and enable the creation of diverse content and applications for telehealth, digital education, and entrepreneurship.
We invite you to network and join the conversation surrounding diversity and opportunities for women and communities of color

IN MEMORIAM
REV. DR. EVERETT C. PARKER
MMTC Co-Founder, Board Member, and Civil Rights Activist
January 17, 1913 – September 17, 2015
MMTC mourns the loss of co-founder, longtime board member, media civil rights activist, and ordained minister of the United
Church of Christ, Everett C. Parker. Rev. Dr. Everett C. Parker passed away at age 102 after a lifetime of work advocating for
America’s voiceless and serving as a pioneer in communications policy reform that ensured those voices were included. Dr.
Parker developed the public interest standard in broadcast media and laid a foundation to make the nation’s communications
industry more diverse and inclusive at a time when considering the interests of minorities was unpopular.
Dr. Parker blazed a trail in the 1950s when he founded the United Church of Christ’s Office of Communication, focusing the
Office’s efforts on ensuring that broadcasters did not suppress the voices and images of minorities on the air and that they
provided news coverage and programming that served their communities of license. Today, thanks to Dr. Parker’s work, the
Federal Communications Commission requires all broadcast stations to serve the needs and interests of the communities to
which they are licensed.

IN MEMORIAM
HENRY “HANK” WILLIAMS
Tech Trailblazer and Founder of Platform
December 1, 1964 - November 15, 2015
Henry “Hank” Williams, a thirty-year serial entrepreneur, technology industry leader, and insider, envisioned a world that
embraced diversity of all kinds across race, gender, and ethnicity. To achieve this dream, in 2012, he created Platform.org
and the Platform Summit to rectify the underrepresentation of minorities and women in the innovation economy. The Platform
organization focused on building a pipeline to get minorities and women involved in the tech industry, increasing the number
of minority high school and college students interested in computer science, and highlighting successful diverse scientists,
engineers, inventors, and techpreneurs.
Prior to founding Platform, Hank founded several other technology start-ups, including Kloudco, a startup developing a new
cloud information management platform for organizing and managing email; Elroy Networks, a development and consulting
company focused on Internet media-related technologies; and ClickRadio, the Internet’s first interactive music service, for
which he raised $40 million in capital from Merrill Lynch, Philips Electronics, and longtime MMTC partner, Syncom, among
others.
We have truly lost a great one, and we hope many will draw from his inspiration.
Hank is survived by his wife, Mayida Zaal, and their three-year-old daughter, Imani; his mother, Elaine Williams, and his
stepfather, Alan Feigenbaum; his half-sister, Kim Thompson; his aunt Emma Jean Evans; and cousins, Jean Michele Moore,
Ruthea Bennett, and Renee Bennett.
