Nowadays there’s a generation of kids that can say their dads used to
get on their boards. Some still do. Often these are individuals that are so
passionate, that their energy has channeled into whatever paths they’ve
chosen to take in their lives. Inside there’s still a fire that keeps on
burning and the outside is trying to keep up.
Between these pages is a group of people that have pursued their
dream and kept it going. A group that has influenced a generation
or more of kids, who are now getting close to taking similar steps
themselves. They’ve been a part of paving the way. A way where the
journey is more important than the destination. A way that is recorded
in the memories and dusty VHS tapes belonging to these kids.
We believe that it is key to follow your passion. That’s why we
are more than honored to feature these originators in our look book.
MAKIA is rooted in board sports, music and fashion in
equal measure, defined by none of these but influenced by all.

With one of the greatest comebacks in recent snowboard history,
Duff’s ear-to-ear smile reminds us what an amazing person he is.
This Canadian powerhouse recently became a part-time fireman
and reaches out to kids by educating them through his own
experiences and knowledge on going HUGE.

As the Gonz put it: “The Original Coolist”. Trasher Magazine’s Skater Of The Year in 1992,
John defines what skateboarding is in it’s rawest form. After suffering a serious back
injury in 2003, he was told he would never walk again. John proved everyone wrong and
emerged on two wheels for the fixed gear film “Macaframa”. Nowadays he run’s his own
bike company www.brakefreecustoms.com and still charges hard. Respect.

Bryce Kanights
BK’s passion for photography, begun as an avid teenage skater. Since those days his
eye has chronicled and influenced several generations of youth culture. The day we
photographed him everything was against us. Nevertheless, we got the shot. Sick boys.

Jeff Brushie
Brushie broke into the scene on the early 90’s, as one of snowboarding’s first “freestyle
superstars”. He was famous for his dreadlocks and impeccable style. Jeff went on to
sign one of the largest contracts, at the time, with Ride Snowboards. Nowadays he
lives in San Diego with his family, and still searches for fresh powder from time to
time, while he’s not judging snowboarding events, photographing poker players, and
resurrecting the VTSP. As Jeff put’s it; “Once self-employed, always self-employed”.

Russell Winfield
As one of the first brothers to go pro in snowboarding, Russell’s career started
on his local NYC golf course on a Burton Elite. Part of the 90‘s notorious Ride team,
Russell was famous for his antics on and off the hill. These days, settled down in Seattle,
WA, Russell has re-invented himself as a marketing specialist for Opulen Financial and
still follows his passion for boarding as an ambassador for Capita snowboards.

Ville Peltonen
A Finnish hockey legend. Scored a hat trick against Sweden in the final match
when Finland won the World Championship in 1995. Ville also won the Finnish league
championship last season with HIFK as the team captain and there are no signs of this

CARRANZA
Kalle Carranza was born in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico and grew up surfing the desolate
beaches of Mexico’s Pacific coastline. He started surfing at the age of 9 and never
looked back. At 15 he got his first clothing sponsor; sunglasses, shoes and board
accessories sponsorships came soon afterwards. After winning the Mexican Junior
Nationals, Kalle moved to San Diego, California to chase the professional surfer dream.
Shortly afterwards Kalle went on vacation to Oahu, Hawaii and ended up extending his
vacation to surf some of the world’s most famous surfbreaks.
Kalle got his first 2 page spread in Surfer Magazine in 2000 and was voted as one best
100 young surfers in the world in Surfer Magazine’s Hot 100 Poll. He continued traveling
the globe competing, and being featured in numerous surf magazine articles all over
the world. At 23 Kalle signed a 5 year deal with Reef Clothing and shoes and became a
key figure in their marketing campaign being used in magazine ads, posters, and movies.
Kalle has 9 international surf covers to his credit,
including Surfer Magazine, Surfer’s Journal, Waves Magazine,
Surfeurope and Surfos amongst others.
At 28 years of age, Kalle grew tired of the surfing lifestyle and decided to move to
Finland to study for his BBA. Currently Kalle is a year from graduating from University,
working as an intern at Makia Clothing and still trying to surf as much as possible.
