The rest of the month has been spent getting ready to go, not just ourselves but the
Doyle Sails Pacific Circuit Rally fleet too.
Excitement is mounting as I write this,
the weather pattern for departure on the
scheduled date is looking good for Saturday
and the weather is getting cooler so it’s
time to head for where the butter melt
again.
Club night for May is back to the Squadron
with Tony Whiting and Jenna again as hosts.
We’ll be thinking of you!!

Five ICA Pacific Circuit Rally boats join the cause
Marine plankton are a diverse group of tiny organisms (viruses, bacteria, protists,
animals and algae) that live in the water column and cannot swim against currents. They constitute the basis of the oceanic food chain and as such provide a
crucial source of food to many large aquatic organisms, such as fish and whales.
Plankton contributed significantly to the onset of oxygen in our atmosphere
about 800 million years ago, long before the appearance of terrestrial plants, and
is still one of the most critical forces of our biosphere to maintain climatic
equilibrium, notably by driving export of carbon to deeper oceans and sediments
(the ‘oceanic biological carbon pump’). Without plankton, we would certainly not
be here to sail the world and admire the many wonders of life.
We are Plankton Planet (www.planktonplanet.org), a nonprofit international
organization that promotes citizenbased sampling of marine plankton to measure the genetic biodiversity and biological health of the world open oceans. We
have developed a novel and very simple sampling tool allowing volunteer yachtswomen and/or yachtsmen to isolate total DNA from plankton communities while
sailing and without any particular expertise. We then process these samples
using cutting-edge molecular technologies, and first-class scientists analyze the
genetic footprints to assess the richness and evolution of oceans’ life. This
is a revolutionary approach to science,
which capitalizes on the thousands of
citizens sailing around the world every
year, without exclusively relying on high
carbon-footprint and extremely costly
research vessels (typically >US$30,000
per day) that will never survey
global oceanic plankton over denseenough spatio-temporal scales.
This new scientific approach has actually been developed on Peter Blake’s
vessel Sea-Master (now Tara), during
the Tara Ocean expeditions (http://
www.embl.de/tara-oceans/start/).
The scientific knowledge gained from
these expeditions has been beyond
expectations, and the results will soon
be published in a special issue of the prestigious
magazine Science. In France, Plankton Planet is
gaining momentum thanks to the active participation of famous sailors (Roland Jourdain, Catherine
Chabaud, Armel Le Cleac’h). For the first year
of Plankton Planet, 5 yachts have been selected
from the Pacific Circuit Rally for a Pilot Project in
the Southwest Pacific to explore plankton communities between New Zealand and the neighboring tropical islands for the first time. These
vessels will take daily samples while on passage
and return the samples for analysis on their
return to New Zealand at the end of the cruising
season. The aim is to provide a total of as many
as 200 samples from across the SW Pacific.
As the rally progresses we will report on the how
and where of the sampling process along with
some picture. The result will also be published for
all to see at the end of the process.

Multihull Solutions continues to expand its ventures in the Asia Pacific region with the announcement of its major
sponsorship of the Sail 2 Indonesia Cruising Rally.
The Multihull Solutions Sail 2 Indonesia Rally is an incredible four-month adventure that sees a large contingent of
power and sail monohulls and multihulls cruise from Cairns, through Indonesia, and onto to the final festival in Tanjung
Pinang on the island of Bintang, just south of Singapore and Malaysia.
Commencing in early July and finishing in mid-November, the 2015 Rally already has 50 confirmed participants and
entries are expected to significantly rise as more cruisers learn about this remarkable event.
Throughout the course of the rally, the cruisers will explore a variety of exotic anchorages through the Spice Islands,
Banda Islands, Flores Island, and the Lingga archipelago, as well as visiting the famous islands of Lombok, Bali and
Borneo.
The rally delivers an incomparable experience with the destinations renowned for their sparkling white beaches, worldclass diving, sea gypsies, komodo dragons, orang-utans,
proboscis monkeys, stunning waterfalls, untouched jungle
grottos, rich culture and generous local hospitality.
The Sail 2 Indonesia Rally is run by Island Cruising Regattas
Ltd, in conjunction with the Indonesian Ministry of Tourism
and the Cairns Cruising Yacht Squadron. The event is organ-

“Multihull Solutions is an iconic brand in the Australasian region, and we are delighted to have them join us as the
rally continues to grow into one of the region’s major cruising events,” John said.
“Multihulls have become increasingly popular over recent years and are a major component in the 2015 rally, accounting for almost half of the confirmed registrations. Multihull Solutions support is a real bonus for us and all the
participants,” he said.
Multihull Solutions Asia general manager Andrew de Bruin said the company was also excited to become involved in
the popular event.
“The Sail 2 Indonesia Rally is the perfect way to truly experience the majesty of this incredible cruising region, and
multihulls are the ideal vessel to enjoy this adventure,” Andrew said.
“We are passionate about helping more cruisers not only discover these breathtaking cruising grounds, but also
learn the enormous advantages that today’s multihulls offer for cruisers who want the best in performance, space,
comfort, safety and style,” he said.
Both power and sail multihulls and monohulls are welcome to enter, although there are only limited spaces left and
interested cruisers are urged to register soon.

It’s been a busy couple of weeks since club
night on the 10th of April at Jack Tar’s in Auckland.
A huge thank you to Peter Parkin and his staff at this iconic Auckland eatery on the
wharf at the Hobson Quarter, Vaiduct Basin. With the theme, “Celebrate the Dream”
the event was attended by a good cross section of the folks that are joining us for this
years Pacific Circuit Rally, some that have sailed with us before and others that are
working their way towards getting off them selves.
The build up to the fleet departure this year in Opua started with a Medical Seminar
at the Opua Cruising Club mid month and a series of information seminars from there.
The Doyle Pacific Circuit Rally program started a day late
this year, the Early Bird BBQ on Monday evening was a
wash with 50 knot gust and heavy rain forcing the BBQ to
be abandoned. We got the events underway the following
evening with the Welcome Cocktail Party, Tropical theme
with woolies, yes, it’s definitely time to head north. The
Opua Cruising Club was again our host for the evening.

The Offshore App
on Windflower
We’ve been using Satellite comms on Windflower now
for the last 12 years and love it, for us, much more user friendly
than SSB for emails and weather.
We have been busy adding new functionality to the Offshore App.
Read about the new features and download the free app!
Weather Routing
All settings are now available in the app giving full control whilst offshore. Tiny 1.5kb download size with PWG/
PWC/GFS/CMC forecasts. Waypoints can be exported in a
GPX format to your navigation package.
Departure Planning
Now available in the offshore App, replicating the
same functionality as the website. Departures can
be set at the standard 24 hrs apart, or as close as 1hr
intervals.
Destination Forecast
When at anchor, get a forecast for your location. Get
a graph of the PWG/PWC/GFS/CMC forecasts at the
highest resolution available.
Connection reliability
has been improved for the
Iridium GO!
interface.
Winlink/Sailmail
customers can now take
advantage of the email
request feature.
Vector charting now
added to allow users to
zoom right down to the
100m level.
The latest generation, the Iridium GO is a game changer, essentially Satellite made easy. Iridium
have simplified installation and set up but there are still a few tricks to help get the best out of
your Installation.
We’ve also been using the Predict Wind Offshore App for the last two months, both while
connected to the Internet and via the Iridium GO and for the first time quick and easy weather
routing is easily downloaded and viewed while on passage. Down loading GRIB weather is also
simple and easy but keep your file sizes small.
A few tricks
Think about this, Satellite comms via Iridium are slow - your home broadband can be anything
upward of 1meg per second, enough to stream video. The old dail up connection, around
128Kbs, Iridium GO - 6 - 10 Kbs or less than 1/10th the speed of dial up.
- Keep your file sizes small
- Use an external antenna (Essential)
- Keep the cable length from antenna to unit short to avoid signal loss
- Avoid downloading at midday when the atmospherics are at their worst.
- Work out the wrinkles BEFORE you leave on passage.
The Predict Wind Offshore App is constantly evolving so watch out for updates over the
coming months.
FEATURES COMING SOON
GRIB Viewer
A GRIB viewer will be
available in the Offshore
App in Q2 this year.

The Saturday workshop on Comm’s for the Pacific
Circuit Rally fleet was well attended with 14 boats represented. Of those present 11 had installed the Iridium
GO. 2 were using Sat Phone and one on Inmarsat Fleet. It
was laptops everywhere. A number of participants hadn’t
made it to Opua by the weekend.
With a couple of exceptions most had their systems fairly
well sorted and we concentrated on getting the best
out of both the Offshore App and the Iridium Mail and
Tracking. The Iridium GO coupled with the PredictWind
Offshore App is a definite step up on previous years when
participants had struggled with comm’s and weather.
One participant discovered a hardware fault with the GO
which necessitated a replacement unit, others had still
to get some practice in. We’d recommend installing the
unit early, activating it one month prior to departure and using your “Unlimited Subscription” to practice with the
Offshore App and pull down Routing and Weather every day, this will also get you in the groove with what the
weather is doing.
Iridium GO!™ is unlike anything the
world has seen before. Powered by the

compact, rugged and portable unit creates the first ever reliable global connection for voice and data communications

As a long time cruiser living on board at all times, our dinghy is one of the most important pieces of equipment we have. Funnily enough one of the most frustrating
ones too. The lack of options, innovation and solutions in this area is somewhat disappointing. The only good thing to come out of this is the constant food for thought
and conversation it brings during
our 5 o’clock drinks…
So it was very refreshing to arrive
in New Zealand this season and
lay my eyes on the OC300, the
first composite cruising tender
from the local manufacturer
OFFSHORE CRUISING TENDERS
(OC Tenders).
Russell Carlyon, recently returned from his own 7 year circumnavigation with his family on
board his 40ft catamaran, Moonwalker, is the designer and builder of the OC300.
In his own words OC300 is the result of all those hours spent maintaining, fixing,
and bad mouthing his own tender during his cruising years. After consulting with
many cruisers, testing and photographing every single tender that had something of
interest, he vowed to give it a good try in producing an alternative to the available
tenders on the market and I believe he is now well on track, with a great product
on offer.
The standard OC300 is a 3 meter skiff looking tender, weighing only 42kgs. That is a
very good starting point. It is as stable as an inflatable, if not more, with the added
bonus of not being an inflatable. It has a full ‘ sunbrella’ covered rubrail made of
closed cell foam, to cushion and protect approaches to other boats and docks, which
also offers total floatation to the tender (try sink it! Russell tried a few times with
little success). Its topside’s are high and straight making for a smooth and dry ride
on conditions where you would (very probably) be getting soaked in other dinghies.
I took the prototype for a burn in December 2014, first with a 4 hp and tiller
extension, which planed with only myself on board. The whole design has been
based on the cruising couple scenario
but will carry six. The picture on the left
is Russell and I with a combined crew
weight well over the 200 kg fully up on
the plane and gone. This was with an
8hp on the back and it would probably
still do so with a 20litre water jug as
well. It was a very responsive boat, dry
and very stable on the sometimes choppy waters of The Bay of Islands.
Since then many accessories have been developed or refined. A dependable oarlock
system, the anchor bag and mesh bulkhead storage areas to keep all high volume
interior organized, plus the very efficient dinghy wheels.

OC Tenders is a 100% designed, produced and locally made product which has, in
my view, the potential to revolutionize the tender market. It will finally give back
the power to the cruisers to take control of their own equipment, like we do (most
of the time) with our own boats. The average cruiser will be able to care and main-

tain their tender without having to pay an arm and a leg for costly (and useless)
glues, canvas work or companies specialized in fixing a product that should not
be broken so often considering its importance to the safety of the cruisers at sea
and at anchor. But most importantly it will most likely last, if treated well, much
longer than you as a captain.
According to Russell, OC300, as with every new production product, is a tender
in constant development. He seems to be listening to all skippers and crew with
design ideas, advice and criticism. What is on offer is the first stage of production.
The second stage will be to turn it into a self-rescue sailing tender as well. So
watch this space!
At around the $4500 mark, it is a very competitive and reasonable price. If you
know anything about composites you will know this tender is a lot of hard work
and hours to construct. If you need a new dinghy or know yours has little future,
you should seriously check this tender out.
Russ says he is able to customize the tender to various needs. While he has developed this as a cruising tender, commercial users are now starting to take notice as
well. Talk to Russ about your needs and take one for a test drive while he has the
time to do it. As I believe very soon, this man will be rushed off his feet with orders!
OC Tenders has asked us to test drive one of their tenders this season and although
they have been doing their own testing heading out to the islands of the Bay at
every opportunity, nothing proves better the efficiency and relevance of a safe,
strong and reliable tender than a good season in the islands.
It will be so good to arrive to all sundowners nice and dry, be able to hop off holding my beer with one hand and using the other to pull my tender up the beach
without spilling my beer or breaking my back.
Cheers OC Tenders!
Wednesday was the first official briefing for the rally. Top on everyones list of question was of course the weather. The weekend
weather was still factoring in the weather Opua was experiencing with a disturbed SW Flow over northland. Some boats (not in the
fleet) that had already left were reporting gusts to 35 a little way offshore.
It’s always a difficult choice, whither to stay and wait for the next weather”window” or take the one you’ve got. We’ve been using
PredictWind now for some years and trust their forecasts and routing. Below are the forecasts and routing from the PredictWind
offshore app and as of Thursday 30th it looks good for the scheduled departure of Saturday 2nd May.
Now it’s rather nice when you see all the weather models following the same track, the waypoint is just west of South Minerva Reef,
Believe it or not there are four separate weather routing solution from four models, PWG, PWC, GFS and CMC. With all of them in
parallel there is consistency in the weather and we can have a high level confidence that what we’re seeing today will be close to
fact in a weeks time when we approach Minerva (Departure Saturday, Gribs and routing done Thursday).
Being a pessimist though i’ll most likely put a little in the bank early while the winds are light so I have some easting for the ap-

proach to Minerva, you’ll note from the spot info on the LH frame that we can expect 22 knots average from approx S57deg giving
an approx apparent wind angle of closer to S50, a touch tight for Windflower with any seaway.

Cuba;- A place of legends and whispers
A great unknown to most. A place that when mentioned you think of music, colour, white sand beaches, revolutions and civil unrest, pirates, rum, cigars and
untouched beauty.
Cuba hasn’t changed much since it was colonised by the Spanish and pirates stalked the Caribbean islands. The atmosphere and architecture will steal your
breath in the Unesco listed cities of Havana, Trinidad, Cienfuegos and Camaguey – where magnificent squares and cobbled streets tell past tales of affluence
and intrigue. Elsewhere many building lie ruined and tattered like aging beauties waiting for a facelift.
The beauty of Cuba lies in its layers and nuances, in its energy that’s mirrored in its dance, architecture, language, religion and most beautifully in its rainbow
of people. Trapped in a time warp and reeling from an economic embargo that has grated for more than half a century, this is a country where you can wave
goodbye to Western certainties and expect the unexpected.
If Cuba were a book, it would be James Joyce's Ulysses; layered, hard to grasp, serially misunderstood, but – above all – a classic.

HYDROVANE ON CATAMARANS
Did you know that the Hydrovane will work on a
Cruising Cat?
A customer recently writes: "After sailing around
6000 miles now with our Hydrovane on our
Nautitech 47 Catamaran, I just wanted to drop you a
line to congratulate you on what a great piece of kit
it really is. Rarely have I bought something in this
Marine industry that simply does exactly what its
meant to and performs so well."

WATT&SEA Hydrogenerator Bracket
It's finally here! The Hydrovane shaft is an obvious
attachment place for a Watt&Sea. The bracket puts
the Watt&Sea in a perfect towing position behind the
boat... No extra holes in the transom and easy to
remove in port.
Have you looked at the Watt&Sea power generation
curve? Producing up to 24 Amps at 7.5 knots... It's
impressive.

Almond Orange Biscuits
ALMOND ORANGE BISCUITS
1 cp almond meal
1 cp slivered almonds
1 cp dessicated coconut
Zest of 1 orange
Pinch salt
¼ cp coconut oil
2 Tbsp honey
1 Tbsp orange juice
1tsp vanilla extract
1 tsp baking soda
Preheat oven to 120˚C, fan bake. Line a tray with baking paper.
In a large bowl, put the almond meal, slivered almonds, coconut, orange zest and salt and mix to combine.
Put the coconut oil and honey into a small pot and melt gently over
a low heat. Once melted, remove from the heat and add the orange
juice, vanilla extract and baking soda and mix well (it will bubble up a
bit).
Spoon 2 tablespoons of mixture into your hands and roll into a ball
(you might have to squish it together a little). Press the ball down to
make a flat cookie shape and place on the baking tray. Repeat until all
the mixture is gone — makes 12-13.
Bake in the oven for 25-30 minutes or until golden, then cool on a wire
rack.
Enjoy....
