Did You Know
Halloween has origins in the ancient celtic festival known as Samhain,
which is derived from Old Irish and means roughly “summer’s end”...
a similar festival was held by the ancient Britons and is known as
Calan Gaeaf...the festival of Samhain celebrates the end of the “lighter
half” of the year and beginning of the “darker half”, and is sometimes
regarded as the “Celtic New Year”...the celebration has some elements
of a festival of the dead...the ancient Celts believed that the border between this world and the Otherworld became thin on Samhain, allowing spirits (both harmless and harmful) to pass through...the family’s
ancestors were honored and invited home while harmful spirits were
warded off...it is believed that the need to ward off harmful spirits led
to the wearing of costumes and masks...their purpose was to disguise
oneself as a harmful spirit and thus avoid harm.*

A Campbell Win Over Morehead State Would:
• be the second on the season and be the most in a single season since the
program restarted.
• snap a six-game losing streak
• be the third in the college coaching career of Dale Steele
• be the first conference win for Campbell and snap an 12-game PFL losing
streak.
• even the all-time series between the schools to 1-1
A Campbell Loss To Morehead State Would:
• extend the current losing streak to seven games.
• drop Campbell to 0-5 in league play.
• be the 13th loss for Campbell in league play since joining the Pioneer
Football League.
• make Campbell 2-17 since the program came back in 2008
By The Numbers

Did You Know
Morehead State’s David Dinkins (1999) remains one
of three players in NCAA history to put up 1,000
yards rushing (1,138) and 2,000 yards passing (2,011)
in a single season...he is joined on the list by Texas
State’s Barrick Nealy (2005) and Appalachian State’s
Armanti Edwards (2006)
Big 2-0-0: Campbell topped the single game 200-yard
rushing mark for the third time in school history with 214
yards rushing against Marist on Oct. 3...each of the 200
plus yard marks rushing have come this season.
Nobody’s Doing It Better (In the PFL): The Campbell
offense remains the top rushing team in the conference
with an average of 189.00 yards on the ground a contest...
the 189.00 yards a game average is over 19 yards a game
better than the next closest school (Butler - 170).
Strength On Strength: This game against Morehead
State pits the top rushing offense in conference by Campbell (189.00) against the toughest defense against the run
in the nation in Morehead State (62.38)...the question, for
the second time in four week,s can answered of whether
good offense beats good defense or does good defense
beat good offense?
Big Play Paul: Paul Constantine continued to make
his mark in the end zone as he caught a touchdown pass
against Dayton on Oct. 10...out of his 21 career catches,
five have resulted in touchdowns.
So Much Better: Campbell has now run for 1,323 yards
this season, which is 571 yards more than the team ran
for all of last season (752)...to put the number is perspective that total amount of yards rushing is just under 76
percent more than the team had all of last year.
Cutting the Gap: Last season in Pioneer Football
League games the Camels were outscored in eight games
by 347 points for an average of 43.38 points a game...so

NCAA Football Subdivision conference....the PFL is
one of only three conferences that sponsor football as
its only sport (Missouri Valley Football Conference
and Great West Football Conference are the others.
By The Numbers
Campbell has had exactly 26 pass attempts in seven of the teams first 18
games...the most recent time was the
26 pass attempts against Davidson on

scene, the Camels are 13th in rush offense, , 17th in sacks
allowed, 20th in pass defense and 50th in total offense.
Individual National Leaders: The Camels also have
several players that place highly in the conference and the
national scene after the first seven games (for a complete
list of all player rankings see page 10)...Daniel Polk
is sixth in rushing (52.86 yds. per game), total offense
(174.71) and passing efficiency)...the quarterback is tied
for 13th in scoring (3.71) and 22nd in all-purpose yards

seventh in the league in kick returns (20.00) and tied for
84th nationally...Adam Willets is tied for second in the
league in field goals (.71) and 12th in scoring (3.86).
Still Ball-Hawking: Campbell defense continued the
trend it started last season of being able to force turnovers...after ranking second in the Pioneer Football
League in interceptions in 2008 with 16, the Camels
picked off three attempts in the first game of the 2009
season...the Camels currently are tied for fourth in the
PFL with six interception...the Camels have forced a turn-

over in 14 of the 18 games since the program was restarted.
First Down Camels: The Camels have heard the phrase
often and are tied for second in the Pioneer Football League
with 127 first downs, an average of 18.1 per game.
A Bit Of A Change: After leading the conference last
season with 86 punts, the Camels through the first seven
games have the fourth fewest amount of punts in the league
with only 35 attempts...with that stat in mind, the Camels
are second in the league in 3rd down conversions (40-for98) at 40.8 percent.
Red Zone Success: The Camels have had great success in
scoring touchdowns when the team reaches the red zone
(inside the 20 yard line)...the Camels have scored touchdowns on 18 of the team’s 26 trips to the red zone this
season (69 percent)....CU’s success rate of 84.6 on red zone
appearances (22-for-26) is third-best in the league...Campbell is one of only three teams in the league that have not
turned the ball over in the red zone.
This Week in the Pioneer Football League:
Other games in the Pioneer Football League this week on
Oct. 31: Davidson @ Butler, Valparaiso @ Marist, San
Diego @ Dayton and Jacksonville @ Drake.
Another First: Campbell’s loss against Old Dominion on
Oct. 17 was the first time the program has faced off with a
scholarship program...the Camels after falling behind early
took control of the game and held the lead until the half
way point of the third quarter when ODU got a 76-yard
punt to pin the Camels deep and ultimately seize moment
after a three-and-out...Daniel Polk threw for a career-high
185 yards with also a career best 16 completions against
ODU...the redshirt junior also chewed up 70 yards on the
ground...the Camels just missed reaching their season
average with 196 yards rushing...CU actually outgained the
Monarchs 381 to 365 and had more first downs (21 to 20)
in the loss...the 28 points scored by the ODU are the least
amount of points they have scored all season long including
a few games against scholarship programs (Monmouth and
Fordham).
Coming Up Short: The Camels raced out to a 14-0 lead
on Dayton on the team’s first two drives but couldn’t hold
the lead and saw the Flyers score 35 of the game’s next 38
points in the 35-17 victory on Oct. 10...CU did have two
long touchdown scores with Rashaun Brown running
42-yard for a score and Daniel Polk and Paul Constantine
connecting on a 60-yard completion...Christian Dixon also
pick off his third pass of the season in the loss.

Downed By The Red Foxes: The Camels took a one-score
game into the fourth quarter, but tired and wore down in the
final period in a 34-13 loss to Marist on Oct. 3...Rashaun
Brown had a break out performance for CU with a careerhigh 87 yards rushing.
Good Effort In Defeat: The Campbell defense was able to
hold Davidson scoreless in the first half but tired in the second in a 24-7 loss to the Wildcats on Sept. 19...C.J. Oates
led the offensive effort with 67 yards rushing and 41 yards
receiving...Lee Stanley reached double figures in tackles
for the third straight game with 11 stops...ten of Stanley’s
stops were of the solo variety.
A Tough Defeat: Campbell put up the good fight but ultimately came up short in 35-28 overtime loss to Birmingham-Southern on Sept. 12...the game did mark a few firsts
for Campbell as it was the first time the team has played
an overtime game since restarting the program...the game
also was the first time the Camels have had multi-players
rush for over 100 yards in the same game...Daniel Polk put
up 105 yards the ground, while C.J. Oates piled up 115
yards rushing...Campbell’s 294 yards rushing in the game
also marked a school record, breaking the 260 the team had
rushed for the week before as did the 224 yards rushing the
CAMPBELL FOOTBALL GAME NOTES • GAME 8 • morehead State
Camels totaled in the first half against BSC...Carl Smith
became the first Campbell back and only third CU football
player to ever score two touchdowns in a game with his
touchdowns from 25 and two-yards out...Oates recorded
the longest Campbell rush from scrimmage with 58 yard
touchdown scamper in the first quarter.
Everyone Gets Involved: Against Birmingham-Southern
on Sept. 12, the Camels continued to use a team effort with
10 different players recording a reception, six different
players tallying a rush and three different players reaching
the end zone.
.
What A Start: Campbell’s football had a quite the start to
its 2009 season with a thrilling 48-28 victory over Methodist on Sept. 5...the Camels totaled 544 yards (260 yards
rushing and 283 yards passing) and six touchdowns...the
Campbell defense after, having its problems in the first half,
settled down to shutout the Methodist attack on a total of
14 plays and 30 yards...redshirt junior quarterback Matt
Vollono came off the bench with a career effort in completing 10 passes for 219 yards and four touchdowns...the
Camels offense had a total of three different 50-yard plus
touchdowns.
Lets Do That Again: Camels offense after opening the day
with a then school record setting 65-yard pass and catch
from redshirt junior Daniel Polk to redshirt sophomore
Harrison Jordan bettered their own effort for longest
offensive play in school history with an 85-yard pass to
sophomore Carl Blain from Matt Vollono.
A Little Perspective: The 34 points that the Campbell offense and special teams accumulated in the first half against
Methodist tied the total amount of points the team scored in
all home games combined last season.
Record Setting Effort: Campbell had a record setting day
against Methodist on Sept. 5...among the team records that
were set to that point were points in a half (34), points in a
game (48), yards in a half (306-1st), yards in a game (544),
yards passing in a half (258-1st), yards passing in a game
(284), yards rushing in a half (212-2nd), yards rushing in a
game (260), longest offensive play from scrimmage (85yard reception), quickest scoring drive (one play-00:09 seconds-1st half twice) and shortest game clock time between

CAMPBELL FOOTBALL GAME NOTES • GAME 8 • Morehead State
Matt Vollono set a school record with four touchdown
passes...he also connected with sophomore Carl Blain on
an 85-yard reception, which is the longest offensive play
in the modern era...redshirt sophomore Harrison Jordan
became the first Campbell offensive player with a multitouchdown game with his two receiving touchdowns.
Spreading The Ball Around: The Camels sported a total
team effort against Methodist with eight different players
catching passes, eight players recording rushing attempts
and six different players reaching the end zone.
If You Build It, They Will Come: Campbell’s football
program continued to get strong fan support at home in the
first game of 2009...after ranking third in the Pioneer Football League in attendance in the inaugural season in 2008
with an average of 3,682 people a game, CU opening day
attendance bettered the average mark of last season by 310
people...Campbell’s average crowd of 3,761 ranks the team
fifth in the Pioneer Football League in average attendance
so far this season.
Ed Gore Field: Barker-Lane Stadium continued its growth
and officially became Ed Gore Field in the off-season in
Phase II of the football stadium project thanks to the generous gift from Ed Gore, a 1952 graduate of Campbell College and member of the Board of Trustees, and his wife on
Sept 5...the Gore family were also major contributors to the
John W. Pope Jr. Convocation Center, where the arena was
named in the memory of their son, Gilbert Craig Gore...
Phase II of the construction of the football stadium includes
permanent home side seating, a press box and an additional
stadium entrance...a small pregame ceremony was held on
the field prior to the Methodist football game to recognize
the Gore family.
What Would You Say?: Linebacker Dave Matthews
besides having a famous singer namesake is also a twosport athlete at Campbell...Matthews participated on CU’s
track and field team in the spring of 2009...as a thrower on
the team he placed among the three in the conference in the
javelin at the conference meet to earn Atlantic Sun AllConference distinction.
A Man Of Many Talents: Campbell tight end Josh Owens
had an interesting off-season that saw him act in a two
plays...he started the fall working in the Harnett Regional
Theatre’s production of “The Glass Menagerie”...Owens
played the role of Tom Wingfield, all while fitting classes,
homework, workouts, meals and football practice around
his hectic schedule...he also found time to act in an original
musical about the 19th century serial killer Jack the Ripper
11
in a play titled “White Chapel” on Campbell’s campus during the late spring.
U-N-I-T-Y, Unity Council: Instead of naming captains this
season, much like last year, the Camels are using a Unity
Council comprised of: Milton Brown, Brandon Chandler, Paul Constantine, Jordan Cramer, Charles Fiore,
Jared Hart, Sam Issermoyer, Andy Johnson, C.J. Oates,
Lee Stanley, Mike Stryffeler...the team will name two
freshmen to the council at a later date in the season.
A Little Change Never Did Anyone Any Harm:
Campbell is returning most of its staffing from last season,
but did make a few minor changes in the coaching staff...
coming aboard to coach the team’s running backs is Jody
Stouffer, most recently was the former head coach at Lee
County High School...also joining the staff this season is
Chris Ballance...Ballance will work as a defensive assistant while getting his master’s degree at Campbell...he had
most recently coached at New Bern High School in 2008
before arriving at CU.
Who’s Back: The Camels return 56 players that were on
last year’s opening day roster last season...of the 56 returning players, 39 were able to earn letters last season.
New Faces And New Places: The Camels have 45 true
freshmen on the roster plus two transfers from
scholarship FCS level in linebacker Manny Davis and
quarterback Payton Brady...the Camels have also made a
few position changes with some of the returners...
Tyler Dean, who started six games last season at guard on
the offensive line, has moved to defense as a nose guard...
Ogi Poluga, who did not see the field last season, was
moved from defensive tackle to the offensive line...Daniel Polk, who played a little bit of everywhere last year,
was moved to and will be playing quarterback exclusively
this season...Mike Stryffeler, who started his Campbell
career at quarterback before transitioning to tight end in
the middle of the year last season, has been moved to tight
end full-time this year....Brandon Chandler, an honorable
mention all-PFL selection as a defensive back in 2008, will
still be playing a defensive back position but will play more
in the middle of the field at safety this year.
The Tall and The Small: Offensive lineman Jeremy Hill
is the tallest member of the 2009 Campbell roster and
stands 6 foot 9 inches tall...the smallest members of the
team are receiver Carl Blain and defensive back Ryan
Davis, who both stand at 5 foot 6 inches tall.
CAMPBELL FOOTBALL GAME NOTES • GAME 8 • morehead State
He’s Not Heavy, He’s My Brother: Tipping the scales
as the heaviest on the CU football squad is true freshman
defensive lineman Demeturis Jenkins, who tops out at 350
pounds...in comparison the lightest member of the squad is
freshman defensive back Tyler Barnett at 150 pounds.
Not A Lot Of Salad Eaters In the Group: Campbell is
sporting a slightly beefer squad, after some hard work in
the weight room during the offseason, with 15 members of
the team weighting 280 pounds or more...of the 15 players,
10 are 300 pounds or more.
True Carolina Blue: The state of North Carolina dominates the home states of the 2009 roster with 80 of the 105
players hailing from the ‘Tar Heel State’... in all 11
different states are represented by players on the opening
day roster...the states listed from largest to smallest roster
contingent are:
North Carolina 8 0
Virginia
5
Florida 5
South Carolina 4
New York
3
Georgia
2
Maryland
2
New Jersey
2
Pennsylvania 1
Tennessee 1
Washington
1
He Came From Where?: The member of the Campbell
football program that has traveled significant air miles to
get here is linebacker Dave Matthews, who came to CU
from Mukilteo, Washington (2,412 miles away)... Matthews
came to the school after visiting while his brother, Todd,
was playing baseball for the Fighting Camels (2005-07)
and decided with the start of the football program to attend
Campbell.
A Tale Of Two Burts: Once again this season
Campbell’s football program has a pair of players on the
roster with the last name of Burt...Branden Burt is an
offensive lineman from Greenville, N.C., while Brennan
Burt is a punter from Pittsford, N.Y. ... so the same last
name, but obviously they are not related...the team also
features a pair of Bakers (Matt and Mike), Browns (Milton and Rashaun), Everetts (Domonic and Michael), Hills
(Jason and Jeremy), Newmans (Lloyd and Will), Rogers’s
(Christian and Jonathon) and none of which are related...the
team also sports three Davis’s (Manny, Ryan and Todd)
12
Not Quite As Green This Season: The Camels are still a
very young football team (54 percent with less than a year
of college playing experience), but not nearly as young as
last year (91 percent were freshmen or lacked any college
playing experience in 2008)...the team still does sport 58
true freshmen or redshirt freshmen, but they are supplemented by a group of 50 that gained college on-field experience last season...on the opening day roster 45 are true
freshmen, 14 are redshirt freshmen, 16 are sophomores, 27
are redshirt sophomores and seven are redshirt juniors.
The Built In Buddy System: The Campbell football team
has 16 different groups of high school teammates on the
squad led by the group of three from Lee County (Mike
Baker, Jon-Michael Stone and Mike Stryffeler)...WakeForest Rolesville also sports three former members on the
team (Jordan Cramer, Tim Hartman and Jacob Kahut),
as does Smithfield-Selma (Alex Green, Andy Johnson
and Lee Stanley)...other high schools with multiple members included: Cary (Daniel Polk, Ethan Pond), Clayton
(Tyler Dean and Samuel Eberwein), Douglas Byrd (Erik
Feliciano and Jason Hill), East Forsyth (Matt Baker and
Charles Fiore), East Lincoln (Payton Brady and Baryn
Spry), Eastern Randolph (Lloyd Newman and Daniel
Ritter), Glenn (Rashaun Brown and Brandon Chandler),
Grimsley (Joseph Parrish and Kelvin Murphy), Hertford County (Demeturis Jenkins and Domonic Everett),
Lakewood (Scott Hayes and Josh Owens), Laney (Alan
Lockamy and Ted Moore), Manteo (Steven Goldsmith
and Brandon Harris), New Bern (Lee Rouse and Ogi
Poluga), Overhills (Michael Crandall and Adam
Purzitza), Western Alamance (Marshall Trogdon and
Adam Willets)...overall, 88 different high schools are
represented on this year’s team.
The Places We Will Go: Through bus and plane travels
the Campbell football team will put in 5,605.4 miles on
the road this season... the farthest travel will be the 912.2
miles to Des Moines, Iowa to take on Drake on Nov. 7...the
shortest trip was to Davidson (119.1 miles) to battle against
Davidson on Sept. 19.
Camels On The Air: Campbell University and the Christian Listening Network have once again reached an agreement for WCLN 107.3 FM to become the flagship station
for all football and men’s basketball broadcasts on the
Campbell University Radio Network.
As the marquee signal for the Christian Listening Network,
Christian 107.3 will be the broadcast home for all regular
season football and men’s basketball contests and provide

com...internet streaming prices are made available well in
advance of each team’s specific sport season...football season passes for online viewing are set at $34.95 each, while
men’s and women’s soccer along with volleyball can be
purchased in our fall sports pass for only $24.95...for single
game viewings of football the cost is $7.95 for video and
$5.95 for audio.
Rothenberg Joins Football Broadcast Team: Joining
Robert Harper in the booth for the 2009 football season
is veteran radio announcer Dave Rothenberg...Rothenberg
is in his first season as analyst for the Campbell University
Radio Network...Rothenberg has been a sports talk host in
Raleigh, N.C. since Oct. 2007...his previous stops include
MLB.com, Cablevision, Sirus Satellite Radio and the NFL
Network .
Something To Play For: The Pioneer Football League and
the Northeast Conference are entering the fourth year of a
partnership, which matches the champions of each conference in an exempt postseason football contest...the inaugural Gridiron Classic saw PFL Champion San Diego defeat
Monmouth 27-7 in 2006...in 2007, Dayton downed Albany
42-21...the 2008 season saw Albany defeat PFL champion
Jacksonville 28-0.
Right In Time: In 2010, the NCAA Football Division I
Championships will expand from 16 to 20 teams, with the
Big South Conference and Northeast Conference (Gridiron
Classic opponent) slated to get automatic bids for their
championships...this season a guaranteed at-large position
shall be awarded in which a conference championship team
representing a non-automatic qualifying conference meets
all the following conditions.
1) Team wins a minimum of eight Division I games during
13
the season;
2) Team wins a minimum of two non-conference games
against Division I teams representing a conference that
earned an automatic qualifying bid (AQ) in that year; and
3) Team finishes the season ranked 16th or higher in an
average of the last regular season media, coaches and/or
computer poll (which will be determined by the committee
on an annual basis).
This criteria is not intended to be a permanent solution for
interested and eligible conference without an AQ bid (Pioneer League would be one)...rather the criteria should only
be used to bridge the time between such conferences applying for an AQ and the time needed to formally approve
the fund necessary bracket expansion - not more than two
years. The committee believes it is important to continue to
adhere to Cabinet policy limiting the number of AQ conferences to not more than 50% of the championship bracket.
Division I FCS, Please: Although some people may accidentally still refer to it as I-AA, the term the best represents the level of Division I football in which the Pioneer
Football League competes has been retired...beginning with
the 2006 National Championship game, the term Football
Championship Subdivision (or FCS) is to be used....FCS is
the only Division I football rank to host an NCAA
sponsored national championship (one of 88 championships
the NCAA sponsors)...the division formerly know as I-A
was changed to Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) and those
teams compete for the Bowl Championship Series (BCS)
national championship...teams who play at the FCS level
can offer a maximum of 63 scholarships (FBS team can offer 85) and complete in a 16-team playoff at the end of the
season to determine the national champion.
It’s Not Where You Start...But Where You Finish:
Campbell was picked exactly where you would expect a
young second-year program to be picked by the Pioneer’s
Football League Coaches - as the final team in the polls...
CU’s football team may have been picked 10th in the
conference’s preseason coaches poll but that doesn’t mean
they need to finish in the basement...the team continues to
work towards the goal of surprising others in the league
this season...San Diego was the preseason choice to win the
conference and captured 77 total points and five first place
votes...conference newcomer Marist, who joined the PFL
from independent status in 2008, were picked eighth with
32 points.
1. San Diego (5) 77 pts
t-2. Dayton (3) 71 pts
t-2. Jacksonville (2) 71 pts

A Quick Review Of 2008
All-PFL Selections: Campbell’s football program, after
completing the first season of football in 58 years, had a
pair of players garner All-PFL honors, the award winners
were selected by the voting of the league’s head coaches,
who were not allowed to vote for their own players.
Milton Brown, a linebacker from Havelock, N.C., captured
first-team honors, while Brandon Chandler, from
Kernersville, N.C., was an honorable mention All-PFL
selection...these were the first postseason honors for any
Campbell players since the program was restarted.
A Shining Star: Milton Brown’s three interceptions,
145 yards and two touchdown against Carthage on Sept.
27, 2008 was one for the ages...Brown’s three picks were
tied for the best single game performance during the 2008
season, while his 145 yards topped last year’s single game
charts, as did his two return touchdowns.
Mr. Perfect: Adam Willets was one of three kickers in the
league to be perfect on his field goal attempts this season
in going 5-for-5...Willets’ 26 points also led the team and
placed him eighth in the conference in points per game
(2.4).
He Prefers To Go At It Alone: Milton Brown finished
third in the league in solo tackles this season with 48...
Brown’s 85 total tackles ranked him tied for fifth in the
PFL.
Fiore Takes Home CoSIDA Honor: Campbell redshirt
defensive lineman Charles Fiore was selected to the ESPN
The Magazine / Academic All-District 3 Football University Division first team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA)...Fiore had a 3.45 grade-point
average as a Religion major...Fiore was the first Campbell
football player to be honored by CoSIDA.
Not Just Another ‘Face In the Crowd’: Campbell’s Milton Brown was honored with an appearance in Sports Illustrated for the Nov. 17, 2008 issue...Brown was singled out
14
for his outstanding in Campbell’s 36-27 win over Carthage.
The Key Is Creativity: Brandon Chandler’s return touchdown against Valparaiso (11/15/08) was Campbell’s third
non-offensive touchdown of the season as Milton Brown
also scored two touchdowns on his interceptions against
Carthage (Sept. 27)...during the 2008 season three of
Campbell’s 12 touchdowns or 25 percent of the
touchdowns were scored on non-offensive plays.
Your Table Is Ready Mr. Brown: Following his tremendous individual effort against Carthage College on Sept.
27, redshirt freshman linebacker Milton Brown became the
first Campbell football player to capture a weekly Pioneer
Football League honor by being named the Defensive
Player of the Week...Brown totaled three interceptions,
including two returns for touchdowns in CU’s 36-27 win
over Carthage...his final touchdown return of 99 yards
was on the Campbell goal line with the team clinging to
a two-point advantage in the final four minutes...the win
for Campbell was the team’s first since they restarted the
program.
Words Have Meaning, But A Name Has Power: Campbell University with this in mind named the CU Football
Stadium after two of biggest supports of the program on
Aug. 30, 2008...Barker-Lane Stadium is named after
entrepreneurs Bob Barker and Dr. Don Lane.
Barker is chairman of the Bob Barker Company,
the industry’s largest supplier to corrections facilities with
textile manufacturing plants in North Carolina, Idaho,
and Florida and metal manufacturing plants and distribution centers in Fuquay-Varina and California...Barker and
his wife Pat were also honored in January of 2008 when
Campbell’s newest residence hall, Bob Barker Hall, was
dedicated in Barker’s honor...both Barker and Pat, who is
executive vice president of the Barker Company, serve on
Campbell boards...Bob is a Campbell trustee and Pat is a
member of the Presidential Board of Advisors.
Lane is owner of Lane Family Dentistry, a full-service dental practice with over 15 locations in eastern North
Carolina...a graduate of the University of North Carolina at
Chapel Hill, Lane has been practicing dentistry in the state
for over 25 years...he is a member of the Academy of General Dentistry and the recipient of the prestigious Fellowship Award...Lane is also a member of the American Dental
Association and the North Carolina Dental Society...in addition, Lane serves on Campbell University’s Presidential
Board of Advisors...he and his wife Phyllis have been long
time supporters of Campbell.
The Bakers and the Lanes pledged $4 million to the
football stadium at Campbell.
CAMPBELL FOOTBALL GAME NOTES • GAME 8 • Morehead State
Not The First Time: As surprising as it may seem this
is not the first time that Campbell has had a football program...the Camels actually have a football history that
dates back to 1925 when the school fielded its first varsity
program...that team, led by Coaches Edge and Baker, went
3-1-1 including the historic first 7-0 victory over Carthage.
A History of Success: In its previous entry as a junior college football program Campbell did have quite a bit of success with a state championships in 1929,1932 and 1939....
also from 1946-48, CU won three-consecutive North Carolina Junior College Championships.
How’d We Get Here?: Campbell dropped its football program in 1950 with the on-set of the Korean Conflict, some
may ask how we got to the present day.
2004- Campbell begins to explore the feasibility of adding
a non-scholarship football program.
2006- Campbell announces the return of football as a varsity sport for 2008 on April 7...CU submits application to
join the Pioneer Football League...Dale Steele named the
head coach on June 15.
2007- Coach Steele begins to assemble his coaching staff
and first recruiting class...Campbell breaks ground on its
football stadium, March 15...football conducts first official
practice on August 28 with more than 100 participants...the
Camels end the fall practice schedule with an intra-squad
scrimmage on November 17...the Pioneer Football League
accepts Campbell as its newest member on December 5.
2008- The Campbell defense defeats the offense 33-31 in
the first-ever Orange-Black Scrimmage on April 19...the
Camels begin the football season with a 12-6 loss to Birmingham-Southern College on August 30.
Up Next: Campbell will now be traveling and head to Des
Moines, Iowa to take on Pioneer Football League rival
Drake on Saturday, Nov. 7 at 2 p.m. est...Drake heading
into the weekend is one of three teams that are tied for the
lead in the conference.

Campbell’s football team (1-10, 0-8 PFL) lost
their season finale to Morehead State (6-6, 4-4
PFL) on Saturday, Nov. 22 by a 42-7 margin at
Jayne Stadium. The Camels end the season on a
six-game skid.
The Eagles marched down the field on the
opening drive punched it in from the five-yard line
on the run from Jerrod Pendleton to give MSU
a 7-0 lead after the Mason Webb kick. The drive
covered 76 yards in 10 plays and melted 4:55 off
the clock.
After a few Campbell defensive stops the Eagle
offense scored on the nine-yard reception from
Derrick Burks off the Jared Phillips pass to finish
off the 53-yard drive.
The Camels special teams put the CU offense in
a great position after a recovered a muffed punt at
the five-yard line by Austin Tart at the 5:55 mark
of the second quarter but David Hyland picked off
the Alex Munro ensuing pass attempt and returned
it a school-record 100 yards to give MSU a 21-0
lead after the made extra point from Webb.
MSU would score one more time before the intermission on the Nick Feldman 18-yard reception
from Phillips to make the score 28-0 at the break.
The drive was set up after Feldman returned the
Campbell punt 37 yards.
After a Campbell turnover to start the half CU’s
Brandon Chandler intercepted the Jordan Ellis
attempt and returned it to the MSU 38-yard line to
thwart a MSU drive early in the third.
Erick Fitzpatrick got into the act next and
rushed it in from the three to extend the Morehead
State advantage to 35-0 after the made extra point

Field on Oct. 24.
Redshirt sophomore linebacker Milton Brown was

points on three field goals (38, 43 and 37 yards) and an
extra point.

touchdown run. The extra point was missed to keep the
score at 6-0 with 4:41 left in the first quarter.
BU scored their second touchdown of the game on
the next possession as Zach Watkins caught a 22-yard
pass from Andrew Huck. The David Lang extra point was
good to increase the margin to 13-0 with 1:38 remaining
in the first quarter.
The Bulldog attack kept it going early in the next
quarter with Dan Bohrer catching the one-yard touchdown from Huck to complete a 13-play, 80 yard drive.
The Lang extra point was good to increase the margin to
20-0 with 7:26 remaining in the second quarter.
CU scored their first touchdown of the afternoon as
redshirt sophomore C.J. Oates was able to haul in the
Polk pass at the two, break out of a tackle and scamper
into the end zone for a nine-yard touchdown. Willets’
kick was knocked through to make the score 20-7 with
3:52 left in the half.
After a big defensive stop by the Campbell defense,
the CU offense marched down the field and got three
points closer on Willets 38-yard field goal to make the
halftime score 20-10 at the break.

Campbell started the second half with a defensive stop
and then proceeded to march down the field in 14 plays,
56 yards and 6:24. The drive was finished off on Willets’
43-yard kick with 4:28 left in the third quarter. The kick
was career long for the redshirt sophomore.
Butler drove down the field on the ensuing drive but
Lang’s 41-yard kick was missed to the right to keep CU
within a touchdown with 1:07 left in the third quarter.
The Bulldogs came up with a defensive stop of their
own before getting a Lang 21-yard field goal to increase
the lead to 10 at 23-13 with 6:27 remaining. The Butler
drive covered 11 plays, 66 yards in 5:06.
CU after a failed offensive series then got a huge
defensive stop near Butler’s goal line forcing a kick that
sophomore Brandon Chandler returned 25-yard to the
Butler 20 yard line. Adam Willets then came through with
his third field goal of the game, this one from 37-yards,
to draw to within seven at 23-16 with just over three
minutes left in the game.
After a failed on-side kick the Camels defense again
came up with a stop and got the ball back for the offense
deep in CU territory (at the one-yard line). The Camels
fought all the way out to their own 12-yard line before
Polk saw his pass attempt picked off by Nick Candicott
with 00:27 seconds left to effective end the chance to tie
the game.
CU was outgained in the game 381-301. Polk led the
offense for CU with 63 yards rushing. The redshirt junior
also completed 15 passes for 161 yards and a touchdown.

The Camels drove down the field to end the
half but Eberwein’s 39-field goal attempt came up

Stryffeler making a 23-yard reception.

the margin to 11 at 28-17 with :30 seconds remaining in the third quarter.
The UD offense kept it going on the ensuing
drive with a Dan Jacobs rushing it in from fiveyard out to make the final score 35-17.

Campbell University (1-3, 0-2 Pioneer Football
League) lost a hard fought 34-13 game to Marist (2-3, 1-2
Pioneer Football League) on Saturday, Oct. 3 at Tenney
Stadium in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. The win was the first-ever
PFL conference win for Marist.
Marist got on the scoreboard first with 10:45 left in the
first quarter when Greg Whipple was able to scamper in
from one-yard out. Kevin Pauly’s extra point was good to
make the score 7-0. The big play of the drive was a 15yard personal foul penalty on Campbell after Marist had
just converted a third down close to midfield.
The Camels answered on their first drive of the game
when Daniel Polk was able to fake the pitch and take it in
from eight-yards out. The Adam Willets kick was missed
to keep the score at 7-6. Paul Constantine was able to
come up with a 12-yard reception on a fourth down and
four deep in the Red Foxes territory to keep a drive alive
for Campbell.
The Marist offense marched down the field and scored
their second touchdown of the game on the next drive
with Ryan Dinnebeil punching it from a yard out to
finish the eight-play 62-yard drive. The extra point was
missed to keep the score at 13-6 with 00:22 left in the
first quarter. A pass interference penalty aided the Marist
offense down the field on the drive to move the ball into
CU territory.
The Campbell offense continued their impressive
showing and went down the field on the ensuing drive.
Polk finished off the 12-play 72-yard drive with a plunge
in from a yard out to make the score 13-12. Samuel
Eberwein was called on and made the extra point to tie
the score up at 13 all with 8:55 to go in the first half. The
point was the first in the career for the first-year kicker.
After defensive stops from both teams, Marist took the
lead right before the break on Debowski’s one-yard run
on third and goal with :43 seconds left in the first half.
The Pauly extra point was knocked in to increase the lead
to 20-13 at the break.

After a big defensive stop from the Campbell defense
including a third and goal situation, the CU drove to
midfield but were stopped in a fourth down situation to
keep the score at 20-13. On the next drive the Campbell
defense again rallied and were able to get a defensive stop
to get the ball back for the offense.
The Campbell offense marched down the field on
their next drive, but were stopped on third down on the
Marist 22-yard line to set up the field goal attempt from
Eberwein. The snap was low though, forcing the holder,
Ted Moore, to attempt to make a play with the ball. The
ball fell incomplete and gave the ball back to Marist with
a little over 12 minutes left in the game.
The Campbell defense was nearly able to get the
stop deep in Marist territory, but Debrowski was able to
complete a 22-yard pass to Joe DeSimone for the first
down. A helmet-to-helmet call added 15 yards to the end
of the play and moved the ball into CU territory. The
Campbell defense was again to set up another third down
only to see Debowski scramble to the CU 22 for the first
down. The next play saw O’Neill Anderson exploded for
a 22-yard score. The Jason Myers extra point was good
to make the score 27-13 with 10:06 left in the game. The
rushing touchdown was the fourth of the game for Marist.
Marist was now rolling and tacked on another touchdown after a big defensive stop. The touchdown was
scored by Dinnebeil, his second of the game, to increase
the margin to 34-13 after the made extra point with 5:30
remaining in the game.
Rashaun Brown had a solid performance for Campbell
with 87 yards rushing. Polk scored a pair of rushing
scores for Campbell. CU’s offense was able to put up 214
yards on the ground. Constantine had three catches for
33 yards. Marist was led by Anderson’s 132 yards on the
ground.
The Camels will now return home for the first time in
a month to take on Pioneer Football League rival Dayton
at 1 p.m. on Oct. 10 at Barker-Lane Stadium/Ed Gore

Campbell University (1-2, 0-1 Pioneer Football
League) opened the 2009 conference season with
a tough fought 24-7 loss against Pioneer Football
League rival Davidson (1-2, 1-0 Pioneer Football
League) on Sept. 19. The loss was the second in
the row for Campbell and ninth consecutive in
league play.
Both defenses played well in the first half with
the teams combining for only 217 total offensive
yards. Sophomore Ted Moore did an effective
job of changing field position for Campbell on his
six punt attempts with an average of 45.8 yards a
kick.
After a scoreless first half, the Davidson offense dented the scoreboard first with Michael
Blanchard hitting Andrew Aldrich on a seven-yard
pass in the end zone to finish a six-play 49-yard
drive in 3:05 and put the Wildcats up 7-0 after Ben
Behrendt’s extra point. The big play of the drive
was Kenny Mantuo’s 26-yard run to move the ball
into Campbell territory.
After a defensive stop by Davidson, the Campbell defense forced a turnover to get the ball back
for the offense as redshirt sophomore Christian
Dixon stepped in front of a Blanchard attempt.
The turnover was the fourth game in a row and the
11th time in 14 games that the defense has done
so.
The Campbell offense formed an answer of its
own on the ensuing drive. The team went on an
eight-play 56-yard drive finished off by the threeyard run from redshirt sophomore Carl Smith. The
touchdown was Smith’s fourth rushing touchdown
of the season. The Adam Willets extra point tied

the game at seven all. The drive was continued
when redshirt junior Daniel Polk was able to
hit redshirt sophomore C.J. Oates on a 21-yard
completion on a second and 20 from his own 34yard line.
Davidson was able to untie the score on their
next possession as Kenny Mantuo was able to
scamper in from nine-yards out. The extra point
made the score 14-7 with 2:32 left in the third
quarter.
After another defensive stop and a 24-yard punt
return from Justin Williams, the Wildcats started
their next drive in Campbell territory. After giving
up a few first downs, the defense forced a third
down situation. Blanchard, under a heavy rush,
was then able to complete the toss in the back of
the end zone to Ben Sarver. Sarver was just able
to drag a toe for the score. The made extra point
increased the score to 21-7 Davidson with 13:27
to go in the fourth quarter. Blanchard also had a
27-yard keeper on the drive to set up the score.
Later in the fourth quarter, after a defensive
stop from the CU defense, a running into the kicker on fourth down gave Davidson the ball back
with a fresh set of downs to work with. Davidson
capitalized on the extra possession and continued
their marched down the field on a 16-play 71-yard
drive finished on Behrendt’s 20-yard field goal to
increase the final score to 24-7.

for a touchdown. After a penalty on the tackle, BSC took
over the Campbell 10-yard line. The Campbell defense
stiffened though a limited the Panthers to a Raymond Josef 26-yard field goal to make the score 13-9 with 14:05
left in the second quarter.
The Campbell offense took over on its own 36 and
proceed to march down the field with Carl Smith finishing the drive with a 25-yard scamper. The Willets extra
point made the score 20-9 with 7:17 left in the second
quarter.
BSC capitalized on Campbell’s fumble with a two
play 39-yard touchdown run finished by Arrington’s 20yard touchdown run. The two-point conversion failed to
keep the score at 20-15.
After the break and a defensive stop, the BSC offense
took the 21-20 lead on a five play 87-yard drive finished
by Shawn Morris’ 65-yard run. Morris broke a Campbell
tackle 10 yards into the play and ran the rest of the way
untouched.
After a few Campbell turnovers BSC was finally able
to capitalize and went on a 10 play 66-yard drive that
took up 5:06 of clock time. The drive was finished by
Thigpen’s nine-yard touchdown run. Josef’s extra point
made the score 28-20 BSC with 10:29 left in the
game.
The Camels drove the length of the field and got to
the BSC six-yard line, but back-to-back losing attempts
forced a 40-yard Willets kick, which he missed to keep
the score at 28-20 with 5:40 left in the game.

Redshirt junior quarterback Matt Vollono came
in relief off the bench and threw four touchdown
passes to lead Campbell’s football team (1-0) to
a thrilling 48-28 victory over Methodist (0-1)
at Barker-Lane Stadium/Ed Gore Field. The 48
points and 544 total yards in offense were both
school records in the team’s first victory at home
since the program restarted last season.
Vollono picked apart the Methodist defense
going 10-for-13 for 219 yards and four passing
touchdowns. Redshirt junior Daniel Polk started
and went 1-for-2 for 65 yards and a touchdown to
redshirt sophomore Harrison Jordan. Jordan had a
strong opening day with three catches for 82 yards
and two scores. The Camels used a three-headed
rushing monster with redshirt sophomore C.J.
Oates leading the team with 95 yards rushing
on 14 attempts. Fellow redshirt sophomore Carl
Smith contributed 67 yards on 13 carries and
sophomore Rashaun Brown tallied 61 yards on his
13 attempts.
The Camels had a balanced offensive attack
with 260 yards rushing and 284 yards passing in
the victory. The Campbell defense, after a tough
first half, took control and limited Methodist to
14 plays and 36 total yards after the intermission.
The Camel also won the time of possession battle
34:54 to 25:06. CU held onto the ball for just over
23 minutes in the second (23:09) to just under
seven for the Monarchs (6:51).
Defensively redshirt sophomore Milton Brown
led the team with 12 tackles. Fellow linebacker
Lee Stanley, a redshirt junior, also reached double
digits with 10 stops. Three Camels picked off

In what turned out to be the biggest play of
the game and gave CU the lead for good, the
Campbell special teams contributed a touchdown
when Adam Willets’ squib kick touched a Methodist player and was recovered in the end zone by
freshman Paul Pizzuti to put CU up 34-28 with
just over 00:17 seconds left in the first half. The
34 first half points for Campbell at home was as
many points as they scored at home all of last
season.
After the break both team’s defenses registered
stops before the Campbell offense march down
the field on its second possession. Vollono finished
off the 13 play 56 yard drive that covered 7:40 of
clock time with an eight yard pass to Jordan. The
touchdown catch was Jordan’s second of the game
and throwing score with the fourth of the game for
Vollono, which is one more than he had all of last
year.
Nursing a 13-point lead the Camels decided to
use their offensive line and running backs on the
next drive and pounded out an 11 play 66-yard
drive that ended on Smith’s five yard dive to increase the margin and make the final score 48-28.
