Auf Der Straße
I
have this bad habit where whenever I go on vacation, I focus too
much on the length of the trip.
Sometimes, in fact, I start lamenting
the end of the vacation almost before
it has even begun. I am not even unpacked in the hotel and I am already
thinking, “In a week from now, my
vacation will almost be over.” On that
first day of arrival, I have a certain
smugness, thinking about having an
entire week of activities ahead of me.
With each passing evening, though, I
count down the days, using fractions
to depress myself. Vacation is a quarter over. Now it is half-over. Then
almost 75%. And on that last evening,
when I am straightening up and packing, I cannot help but wonder where
all the time has gone.
Of course, a week really is not
all that long in the scheme of life.
It usually flies on by when you are
working, so why should the timespace continuum behave any differently when you are away? Believe
it or not, I remember having similar
thoughts to myself when I took over
the role of NNJR’s treasurer position.
It was January of 2010 and I saw the
long path stretched out in front of me:
Two years as treasurer, the next two
years as track chair and then if all
went well, the final two years in the
role of president. And now that time
is fading into the Friday night of my
presidency with the club, I wonder
again – where did all of the time go?
It actually goes back a little
farther than that in terms of these
monthly articles that I have had the
privilege of writing in Porscheforus.
Not all of the roles on the Board of
Governors have the responsibility of
a monthly column – but I managed to
hit three of the possible five journalist
4
PORSCHEFORUS DECEMBER 2015
By Drew Karpinski l NNJR President
positions. My first twenty-four articles
as autocross chair were written under
the title of “The Backside of the Cone.”
I had taken that title from the popular
autocross advice to always make sure
you turn on the back side of the cone
when driving through a slalom. The
cadence of the phrase always reminded
me of “The Dark Side of the Moon.”
(“There is no back side of the cone
really…”) The next twenty-four installments, this time as DE chair, were
written under the heading of “Tracking
Out.” Once again, it was popular driving advice, turned catch phrase (and no
Pink Floyd reference this time). The last
couple of years, however, under “Auf
der Strasse,” (“On the Road”) have
been particularly fun for me. With the
autocross and driver education columns,
I somehow always felt responsible to
maintain at least some semblance (no
matter how small) of the subject driving
activity in the article. With the president’s column, though, there were no
real rules. I mean, I could have written about what events are coming up,
but we also have something called a
calendar for that. I thought it might be
more interesting to broaden the conversation and talk about other cars, and
even other interests and hobbies. In the
process, I found out quickly that there
are lot of like-minded people in the club
who like cooking over charcoal, listening to vinyl records, tubed electronics,
playing golf and telling stories about
family. And through all of our divergent
interests that differentiate us, there is
somehow an undercurrent of unity binding us together.
Our Board of Governors is a
microcosm of this sense of unity, and
I am especially proud of the work that
we have done over these last couple of
years. This is a small, but exceptional
group of the membership that spends
an enormous amount of their time and
energy to make all of the activities of
the club happen. When I first assumed
the role of president, I made it part of
my mantra to remind the folks on the
board that NNJR is not a company and
that what we do is not work, at least in
the traditional sense. My message was
not intended to encourage slacking, but
meant to reinforce the notion that our
sole purpose is to keep the club vibrant and active for the pleasure of our
members, and to make sure that we will
be around for many years to come. We
are not here to drive sales, or cut margins, or do anything else that might be
expected in our shareholder-driven day
jobs. The moment we forget that premise and put business ahead of membership is the time that NNJR loses its
way. Our board members consistently
go above and beyond, however, and put
forth the kind of effort that you might
think was tied to a huge paycheck or
bonus structure of some sort. The bonus
as it turns out, comes from the unbelievable love from our members in support
of the club and all of its volunteers.
As you have undoubtedly have
heard by the time you will have read
this, we lost one of club’s leadership in
October after a short but serious illness. Bob Michaelson was kind of like
a rock star within NNJR. He served as
our track chair and then as our president. Several years later, Bob served
once again as our track chair and then
a second time as our president. He was
also, of course, not only a seasoned
instructor, but one of our chief instructors. And right up until about a week
from his passing, Bob was still happily
manning the computer and answering
emails as our track program’s registrar
– a full-time job if there ever was one.
Personally, I knew Bob to be one of the
chiefs that supported me the most when
I assumed the job as track chair back in
2012, making sure that I had everything
that I needed to run the events. He was
brilliant, he was direct, he was goodhearted and he was genuine.
One of the things that struck me,
though, as I sat listening to people speak
about Bob during his wake and his
funeral, is just how little I really knew
about him in his life outside of NNJR.
I always thought that Bob was one of
the proverbial “smartest people in the
room,” but I never realized that this man
has eighty-something high-tech petroengineering patents to his name. And
that he had worked while in school for
a Nobel Prize recipient, and was credited by that laureate for inspiring him
to forge ahead. Or that he held a Ph.D.
in organic chemistry from MIT. Heck,
he even built a star observatory with
a couple of his friends for kicks. For
all of those enormous intellectual and
professional accomplishments, though,
Bob was loved and respected in our
halls (and tracks) as being just one of
us. Car #8. Had Bob not accomplished
any of those other things in life, I doubt
it would have changed a single thought
about him within our group. He was our
family.
I think this is a big part of why so
many of the people in this club enjoy being a part of our membership - whether
that role be as a participant, a board
member or as a multi-term past president. No one in the paddock seems to really care about whether you have moved
a mountain or moved furniture. Whatever it is that got you here, they are just
glad that you made it to the party. There
are not many places in this world that
you can say that about. I can tell you that
my own journey within NNJR was influenced by this sense of unity after my
wife, Sandra, passed away in late 2009.
As a suddenly-single father with a (then)
three-year-old daughter, I experienced
equal parts loss, fear and uncertainty.
What gave me strength was the overwhelming support from my friends from
NNJR and even from friends in other
PCA regions and other car clubs. The
people that enjoy this hobby are some of
the finest people in the world and what
everyone did for me and for Julia back
then was more meaningful that I will
ever be able to convey in words.
One of the best parts of our PCA
region is the fact that our leadership is
fluid. Although not officially limited
within our by-laws, our presidents have
traditionally served two years before
turning over the reigns to a new leader.
Believe it or not, not all PCA regions
work this way. When I attend the biannual Zone One President Meetings,
many of those folks have been attending
that meeting for many years, if not many
decades. I will not speak to what is lost
by not having fresh leadership, but it is
easy to appreciate what is gained: energy, optimism, innovation and creativity - all byproducts of leadership taking
a healthy approach to succession.
I am especially happy to have such
a great guy taking over as our club’s
president in 2016. I had supported Tom
Iervolino to join the Board of Governors
and run the autocross program when I
left that post in 2009. Tom served in that
role for several years and then moved
on to treasurer, governor, VP and track
chair, and now the NNJR President. Tom
always amazes me with his ability to
give 150% to whatever he is doing, both
in terms of effort and in creativity, while
still being able to enjoy himself and be a
true class act. Tom’s enthusiasm is infectious and it showed in his work with the
DE program. As a couple with his wife,
Lisa, they are two of the nicest people
that you will ever meet and I am very
proud to have them as friends. NNJR
is in really good hands. My sincerest
congratulations go out to Tom.
I also want to congratulate our
other elected officers for 2016. Most
of you know Tom Swift as one of our
club’s chief instructors and Tom will
be taking over the role of DE chair for
2016. Cindy Cristello will be returning
and continuing in her role as our club’s
secretary. Janice Ernsting will be taking
over the treasurer position, a job once
held by her husband, Ken Ernsting. Our
governors, responsible for representing
the membership at the BoG level, are
Grant Lenahan, Murray Kane and Anthony Wartel. Finally, as the immediate
past president of the club, I also have a
spot on the executive committee. This
is a really talented and passionate group
of officers, and I know they will work
with Tom to bring NNJR to ever greater
places in the next two years.
I usually remind myself at some
point during a vacation that time really
does need to be a constant. I mean, in
those moments where you are having
a good time and would want the day to
last forever, you may wish to have the
ability to slow things down a bit. But
what about all of the other times? Like
when you are in eighth grade math class
at 2 in the afternoon? Or sitting in traffic? Or getting a root canal? Or on a bad
date? Nope, time is indeed flowing like
a river and all things must pass. I have
to admit, I am looking forward to having more time to spend with my family.
I may even be able to find time to wash
my Porsche once in a while. (It was
dark red last time I checked.)
Well, time is almost up. I feel truly
privileged and honored to have had this
opportunity to serve as your president
for these past two years. Thank you,
everyone - it has been a great ride. This
may have been my last Porscheforus
column, but I cannot wait to see what is
written in the next chapter.
Wishing you all the best in life’s journeys.
Drew

W
ow, where has the time
gone? It feels like not too
long ago that I was sitting
with Drew Karpinski and learning
the ins and outs of leading our DE
Program and now here I am writing
my final DE article and in the midst
of transferring DE to Tom Swift, our
new VP and Track Chair.
I can clearly say that I have thoroughly enjoyed being your DE Chair.
I really had fun, made a bunch of new
friends and was constantly reminded
how many great people we have in
this crazy car club of ours. As I would
say at every event Driver’s Meeting,
there are many moving parts to these
DE’s and they would not be possible
without the commitment and support
by so many event volunteers, our
Instructor Corp and our Chiefs. At
each event we had a leadership Team
(our Stewards) and a cadre of volunteers. These Stewards are invaluable
(and have frequently come to my
rescue) and are not
thanked enough.
So, THANKS
to all of you for
your support and
thanks to all the
participants of
our Program and
please carry on
and support our
new DE Chair and
keep the NNJR
DE Program the
best in PCA.
When I took
on this role at the
end of 2013 (I had
a test run at the
2013 VIR event),
I had developed
8
PORSCHEFORUS DECEMBER 2015
By Tom Iervolino l Track Chair
a list of Goals and Objectives that I
wanted to achieve during my tenure.
These were:
Goal: Increase the “user
friendly” aspect of our Program and
ensure that all participants know what
to expect and are, quite frankly, treated
like customers.
Result: To name a few things
we increased our frequency and content
regarding pre-event Tech, provided
more food and drink at Techs, enhanced
the information that goes with the Track
Pack and Track Pack email and held a
get together/Happy Hour at every event
with a number of them having food and
snacks.
Goal: Improve the schedule and
add new tracks if possible.
Result: We added a new
track (Palmer) and moved the date for
Thunderbolt to not fall on Father’s Day
weekend.
Goal: Based on your feedback
via DrivingEvals, we needed to improve
our classrooms.
Result: We added a whole set of
new topics and added classrooms for all
run groups at 95% of our events. These
presentations were created and presented by our Chief Instructors.
Goal: Ensure that every student
that wanted to drive could drive (always
have enough Instructors).
Result: Improved our incentive
Program for Instructors which resulted
in 95% student participation.
There were a number of additional
things we improved that are more behind the scenes and were an attempt to
ease the support effort of our volunteers
and Stewards.
So, 23 DE’s later and 13,152 miles
in the NNJR van, I am passing the DE
torch to Tom Swift and receiving the
President torch from Drew Karpinski.
Thanks for the opportunity to be you
Track Chair and see you all out there
next season.

Robert C. ”Bob” Michaelson, PhD
By Al Tafro
O
ur Club lost a great friend - a passionate Porsche
enthusiast, a tireless leader and a long-time Chief
Instructor in our Driver Education Track program
with the passing of Robert Charles Michaelson on October
4, 2015. A devoted and loving husband, an accomplished
PhD and professional, loyal and trusted friend, incredibly
smart, a big smile, a quick wit, humble and honest. With
Bob, you always knew where you stood. Straightforward
and insightfully brilliant, he presented as a “regular guy”,
without pretense. If he liked you, you knew he liked you.
And if not, well, too bad for you. Bob had an uncanny ability to see through the nonsense and find a solution that was
often not evident to the rest of us.
I used to refer to my friend Bob as “Big Bob” and it
had nothing to do with his physical stature. It was about his
presence, his smile, his intelligence, his ability to stand up
to people and his commitment to getting things done. Generous with his time and his talent, Bob always did whatever
was necessary. His service to our Club has been nothing
less than outstanding. In short, he served as our Region’s
President on two separate occasions, our Track Chairman,
and most recently as our Track Registrar for many years. Bob
served as our President twice not because his ego required
that he serve again; it was simply that the Club needed his
leadership and Bob returned, assumed the responsibility and
got the job done. As our DE Registrar for the past number
of years, he did a great job as the gatekeeper … always fair,
always on time and always done right. He did a masterful
job getting the registration and student evaluation processes
computerized.
We know how much Bob loved the track. Just being
there, driving on track, the sounds of the cars, hanging out
by the “wall”, either as a Chief Instructor or with the Chiefs
for the event, but I am sure he would tell you what he loved
most were the people. On track he was always a fast, safe and
courteous driver, always with a “state of the art” car. His love
for being at the track prompted he and Terri to buy a motor
coach so they could stay in the paddock whenever there was
an event.
While incredibly dedicated to the Porsche Club, Bob
DECEMBER 2015 PORSCHEFORUS
9
always put his devoted wife Terri and family first, including
his sister, brother-in-law and nieces. Anyone who ever came
to an NNJR event with Bob and Terri in attendance would
immediately see their commitment and affection to each
other. We saw how Terri was willing to share his passion and
get involved, while being incredibly attentive to Bob. At the
track, I would always encourage my wife Lisa to observe the
manner in which Terri was treating Bob, and how she would
seemingly take care of everything! She would be cleaning
the car, setting up the chairs, mixing Bob a drink, setting up
the grill, making dinner… Lisa would simply say, “You are
not Bob”.
I came to know Bob in 1992 when I joined the Porsche
Club. At the time Bob and I drove similar cars and he was a
Track Instructor in the Club, so I naturally gravitated to him.
Bob quickly put me at ease, welcomed me and made me feel
like I could become part of the group. I have come to learn
that others had a similar experience with Bob, as he would
reach out to the more reserved to encourage them to participate. During our Porsche Club years we caravanned on many
road trips together. In the middle 1990s, every September
a group from NNJR would caravan to Mt. Tremblant. Bob
would organize and give everyone something to bring or do.
We all had CB Radios and I distinctly recollect Bob doing
his best rendition of “O Canada” and Willie Nelson’s “On
the Road Again” for all to hear. Phil Rodano would bring
a grill that was about 8 feet long. Bob would marinate the
steaks in red wine, onions and spices that made for a delicious dinner. I can still see him standing out by that grill
with his cocktail in hand, cooking for everybody with a big
smile on his face, exchanging “track tales” with Mike Carr,
Phil Rodano, Knute and Sandra Hancock, ford Shaw and the
rest of the crew. Some years later we went on a road trip to
Road America and Bob invited the entire NNJR gang to his
sister Shirley’s home for dinner. Shirley and her husband
Gene were gracious enough to provide an incredible dinner with Wisconsin bratwursts (slowly and carefully grilled,
then soaked in beer, sautéed onions and butter), potato salad,
beers and more! Bob would say – you have not had brats
until you’ve been to Wisconsin. And he sure was right as I
still talk about those brats!
Bob was an incredibly accomplished professional, having received his PhD in Organic Chemistry from MIT. Bob
was one of Nobel prize winner Professor K. Barry Sharpless’
first graduate students in the Department of Chemistry at
MIT and his work was instrumental in Professor Sharpless
earning the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2001. Professor
Sharpless acknowledged that Bob was “the initiator of his
path to the Nobel Prize” explaining, “It started with Bob’s
discovery of V and Mo directed epoxidations (High Stereo
and Regioselectivities in the Transition Metal Catalyzed
Epoxidations of Olefinic Alcohols by t-Butyl Hydroperoxide as published in the Journal of American Chem. Soc. 95,
6136-1973”) (I cannot even pronounce these words). Interestingly, when recently asked about Bob, Professor Sharpless
10 PORSCHEFORUS DECEMBER 2015
recounted that “Bob was a terrific chemist and a larger-thanlife presence - irreverently boisterous, fun and unpretentious,
thoroughly decent, a loyal friend, someone you could always
count on.” Evidently, Professor Sharpless’ experience with
Bob is strikingly similar to mine!
Later in his career Bob obtained more than sixty patents for his work on behalf of the Exxon Corporation. Kyle
Dolbow, at one point a colleague of Bob’s at Exxon, relayed
the story of how in his spare time Bob was reviewing some
notes from a completely different department and suggested
a process whereby they could achieve significant savings. Kyle indicated that, as of 10 years ago, those savings
amounted to more than $500 million per year!
I think Bob truly had the ability to view things differently or to see things that most of us didn’t … whether that was
in chemistry, where he earned all of those patents, or whether
that was solving a simple problem in the Porsche Club. His
solutions and decisions were always fair. While he was good
at making the rules, every now and then Bob would break
one. If you see me at a track event, ask me about it and I may
share it with you!
I want to share a story sent to Terri by Gene Murphy, a
boyhood friend of Bob’s. Gene and Bob were the founding
members of the Palos Hills Observatory in Illinois. Gene’s
story goes like this:
Hi Terri: For some reason, Bob didn’t like Physical Education when he first attended college at the Navy Pier
branch of the University of Illinois. So, he didn’t go to his
P.E. classes. Since U of I is a state school, it must follow
the state laws which, in 1964, required everybody to take
P.E. classes during their first 2 years of college. Lack of
attendance resulted in Failure which resulted in Bob being
ousted from the U of I. A year later, he petitioned the Dean
for re-admission.
The Dean noticed that Bob had taken courses during his
hiatus year at other colleges and had straight ‘A’s in all
these courses. So, the Dean said to Bob: “Well, this looks
very good. But I hope you don’t think that you’re some
kind of undiscovered genius or something.”
“Well, as a matter of fact, I do,” said Bob.
“With that attitude, you will NEVER graduate from any college, nor will you EVER achieve anything of significance,”
said the Dean; and he refused to permit Bob’s readmission.
So, when Bob graduated from IIT with honors, he sent the
Dean a copy of his diploma. And when Bob earned his
Ph.D. at MIT, he sent the Dean notification. And when Bob
was awarded a U.S. Patent (33 times), he sent this idiot
Dean notification. And whenever Bob had a professional
paper published (many many times, starting with 3 papers
before he finished his undergraduate work at IIT), he sent
the Dean notification.
This story exemplifies the at-times defiant Bob’s confidence, determination and level of achievement in pursuing
his objectives.
If you want to honor Bob and show him the respect he
deserves, I would ask that you please consider making a
donation to the MIT Chemistry Graduate Fellowship Fund in
memory of Robert Charles Michaelson, PhD Organic Chemistry, ‘76 by mail: MIT Chemistry Department, 18-388, at 77
Massachusetts Avenue, Cambridge, MA 02139, attention Liz
McGrath.
The #8 will be retired from the NNJR ranks. No other
driver will run Bob’s #8 at our NNJR events. We thank Tom
Swift for putting #8 on his Cup Car, the very car that was
once Bob’s, and running it at Lightning on October 17 in
honor and tribute to Bob. Tom, with Bob’s wife Terri in the
passenger seat, led a procession of cars around the track, and
then did one more solo lap for the #8.
Commemorative #8 decals will run on NNJR cars so
Big Bob will always be with us on the track …. but please
know my friend, we miss you greatly!

Concours Corner
Paul Miller Porsche/Car Care Specialties Workshop
T
his past October Paul Miller Porsche was once again
host to NNJR and Car Care Specialties as Larry
Reynolds, proprietor of the aforementioned business
used the day to teach both the new and not so new members
a thing
or two.
Larry’s
field of
expertise
being
what the
name
of his
business
implies.
Naturally all
in attendance would have ample opportunity to watch, listen
and ask questions. As in years past Larry performed live
demonstrations on member’s cars using the products he
sells. This was the 25th and final year Larry has put on this
workshop. In recognition of his long term dedication to the
NNJR concours program, Larry was presented with a plaque
that memorialized his commitment and efforts over the years
on behalf of the club. We started the afternoon with a pizza
lunch graciously supplied by Paul Miller Certified Sales
Brand Ambassador Raj Ramrattansingh. Great pie! Larry
and company had brought a full range of detailing and car
care products.
This provided
much temptation
as we personally
can attest having purchased
several products
ourselves.
After lunch
the focus was
on the workshop
session with Arslan Akhtar’s red
2001 BMW M
Coupe. This car
was in need of a good paint cleaning, polish and wax. Using
Menzerna and P21S products Larry showed us how to bring
12

back the shine on Arslan’s paint.
Next up was
Hubert King’s
black 2001 911
Carrera. Hubert’s
Porsche had several paint issues.
Foremost being
the front bumper.
It was obvious
someone had
bumped the car and the only solution would be to repaint it.
Next using paint chips on Hubert’s car as an example, Larry
explained how to best fill them in using a toothpick for application.
We then moved on to Kadeer Beg’s red 1995 911 C4.
This Porsche was suffering with dull paint, faded rubber and
plastic trim. Thus requiring the advice of an expert. Larry
first explained the paint issue would be resolved by the same
procedures and products used earlier on Arsalan’s car. He
then addressed the faded rubber and plastic trim. Sonax Plastic Restorer Gel, a product he worked with the manufacturer
to develop was the solution. Using a soft clean microfiber
cloth, he worked the gel into the surface. This brought them
back to a fully restored new look finish.
The last car to benefit from Larry’s expertise this day
was Mitch Jablon’s 2014 911. Mitch thought he had a few
spots on his driver’s seat that had faded. Larry quickly realized the problem was not fading and could be resolved with a
good cleaner. He recommended Lexol Leather Cleaner.
With the workshop portion of the program over, it was
time for the traditional Concours Raffle. The concour’s
chair’s had brought some great items, including hats and
shirts. Larry contributed the products he had used in his demonstrations, thus ensuring that the majority of the assembled
went home with a prize. We would like to thank Paul Miller
Porsche, General Sale’s manager Paul Gavel and Raj Ramrattansingh for hosting us at their incredible new facility.
Lastly a big Thanks to Larry Reynolds for 25 years of great
workshops. We will truly miss you. Your humor, wit and expertise has been enjoyed and appreciated for all those years.
A Retrospective On The 2015 Concours Season
T
he 2015 season began in January with the new Body
Shop Tech at Milan Auto Painters in Clifton. Owner
Pino Angulli and concours pro extraordinaire Jerry
Manna covered everything from light repairs to complete
restorations. An ever more important area considering the
explosion in values of the older air cooled Porsche’s. An
extra treat was the home cooked Italian meal we all feasted
on courtesy of Pino’s mom Teresa. Everyone must have been
suffering cabin fever as the turnout was huge.
February saw us back at Flemington Porsche for the annual “Dentman Workshop. Richard Karas of Flemington was
a gracious host and Bill Rochford, a.k.a. “The Dentman”
worked his magic on 25 cars, Porsche and others. If you
have never seen Bill work it is a real treat as he makes minor
dents and dings disappear right before your eyes. Our hosts
also provided a great spread for us to feast on.
March was the traditional Gathering of the Faithfull
Concours social as long time NNJR member, rally chair and
proprietor of High Marques Motor’s, John Vogt again hosted
the event at his establishment. Following the precedent set
by the two prior concours events this year, we again saw a
large turnout with over a hundred in attendance. We took
the opportunity to introduce the concours scheduled for the
remainder of the year and hold our annual judges workshop. The workshop was held in Chris Coviello’s All In The
Details behind John’s store. This workshop has become ever
more important with the growth of the program call for more
judges. John not to be out done, went overboard providing us
with a repast fit for kings, including an omelet station.
April and we were back at the world the renown Porsche
restorers Paterek Brothers establishment for the longest running NNJR workshop in the history of the club, 35 years!!
Brothers John and Ray, alone with John’s wife Donna and
John’s son Andrew were our hosts. Food again. Are you seeing a trend here? The Patereks provided a sumptuous meal
that included one of our favorite foods” Sloppy Joes.” The
main topic for this year’s workshop was how to prepare for
this years Zone 1 Concours. As always the Paterek’s were
happy to share their knowledge on how to repair, restore or
just detail your car.
May was a busy month. Starting with the “Welcome
To The Club” event. Geared to introduce new members to
concours and rally, we had the largest turn out to date for this
event. Somerset Hills Learning Institute was the scene of the
action. The school was the NNJR charity beneficiary for the
preceding five years and happy to host us. The concours was
held first, followed by lunch and then the rally. Fred Simonson took top honors in the concours with his super 1989
Guards red 911 Cabriolet. A rare perfect score brought him
1st in class and “Best in Show. After the rally was scored
new members Christian and Mary Rose Cortes took home
the “Overall Winner” trophy having had the best combined
scores for both events. Later the same month we were honored to host the Zone 1 Concours and Rally held at the wonderful Hilton Woodcliff Lake. Big event. Friday reception,
Saturday concours and banquet and Sunday the rally. Saturday brought rain early, but by judging time the skies cleared.
Akemi Kane was the big winner. 1st in Class and “Best in
Show” with her classic black 1992 964 Turbo Coupe.
June brought another new workshop as we joined with
the Northern NJ Section of the Mercedes Benz Club of
America to hold a workshop entitled “Detailing A to Z.”
Chris Coviello our host walked us though the entire process
of detailing a car. This included exterior, interior, engine,
storage and undercarriage. It was rewarding seeing both
clubs mingle and talk about their passion for both marques.
John Vogt and Chris both supplied the eats. The concours
chairs and All In The Details supplied some great raffle
prizes. A review of the year would not be complete without
mention of the June Porsche Parade in French Lick, Indiana. Though not an NNJR event, we saw several members

attend and show in the concours that to our thinking is the
main event of the week. Bob and Lucile Knapik took 2nd in
Preservation PS04F, Jeff and Margie McFadyen had 1st in
Preparation Full PP01F. Akemi and Murray Kane 1st in Preservation PS05F and the Preservation Group Award.
July and we returned to the Deutscher Club after a
several year absence to hold our “Summer Concours”. Great
location with a real German ambience. Perfect for a German
car Concours d’Elegance. The weather was perfect. We had
a great turnout. Everyone raved about the venue and food.
The big the winners this day were Michele and John Schrade
with a perfect score to take 1st in class P8 and “Best in
Show” .
August was the New Hope Car Show and the organization again asked NNJR to run judging for the Porsche
classes. Great weather, great turnout and many well presented Porsches. The Porsche group was by far the largest with
more than twice the entries of any other marque on Sunday
(foreign car day). This show draws entrants from several
states. As is often the case NNJR members were amongst the
14
PORSCHEFORUS DECEMBER 2015
class winners. 1st in class included Ray Paterek’s 356 (P1),
Len Coloccia and Linda Pellitteri’s 914 (P2), Phil Stern’s
928 (P3), Bill Harris’s 911 (P5), Akemi Kane’s 964 Turbo
(P6), Don Lipira’s Boxster (P8) and Lake Underwood’s 356
(P10)
September and we were at a new location for the fall
concours. This year we were invited to hold the event at
NNJR member Frank Bogyos “Wingspread Farm” in the rural hamlet of Asbury. An absolutely stunning farm, bordered
on one side by the Musconetcong River. This is our annual
Multi-Marque concours and was the second event in which
we partnered with the Mercedes Club. Despite a threat of
rain, the weather held and we had a great time with trophies
for all the different marques. Participants were all delighted
to be at the farm. The top award for this event was taken by
Bob Knapik with an almost perfect score for 1st in class and
“Best in Show with his award winning Guards red 1989 911
Carrera.
As we went to press the November workshop was ahead.
Hosted by Jose DeLaCruz, wife patty and son Max at their
ID Signs establishment. We will have a Do It Yourself workshop with participants working on their own cars under the
tutelage of our NNJR concours pros, covering winter storage
for driven and stored cars and a special guest from AutoChem that will introduce us to a product line most of us are
not familiar with.
The 2016 Concours Season
E
vents for early 2016 are already planned. January
16 will see us return to Milan Auto Painters, February will have the Dentman workshop and March the
Gathering of the Faithful. Mark your calendar for May 13-15
as the Zone 1 Concours and Rally hosted by Metro Region
and will be at the lush Old Westbury Gardens. June 18–25
will be the dates for the Porsche Parade hosted by Zone 1
at Jay Peak Vermont. This is a must do for every Porsche
owner. We call it a week of Porsche heaven. With activities
for kids of all ages, plan a family vacation and join us.
This column will be our last as your Concours Chair as we
both have accepted appointments as the 2016 Zone 1 Concours and Rally Chairs. It has been a great two years that we
thoroughly enjoyed and we wish to thank all of the members
that helped make the NNJR concours program one of the
premier programs in PCA. See you on the field in 2016.

Arthur Pilla
“An NNJR legend”
A
By Tony Henderson
rthur Pilla was an inspiration to me the first
time he walked through the door at Exclusive
Motor Cars in Upper Montclair NJ. The shop
I worked at all through the1980s. Being the premier
Porsche turbo shop at the time, Art wanted to see just
what we could do to modify the engine and suspension
on his newly acquired Porsche. He had a bright smile
and infectious laugh that became his trademark. He
also had an enthusiasm about him that was somewhat
addicting. He was the kind of person you would look
forward to seeing any time he walked through the door.
We hit it off right away when he brought his 1979 white
930 into the shop.
We both joined the NNJR PCA in 1982 around the
same time and also attended our first two track events
together. Our first event was an early spring Lime Rock
16
PORSCHEFORUS DECEMBER 2015
when there was still snow on the ground. That was a
challenge and soon taught us just how to use finesse
when driving the rear engine Porsches on the track.
Our second event together was Watkins Glen, he was
so psyched and nervous at the same time. I remember
he had blown out an air injection plug on the bottom
of one cylinder and I had him take the car down to the
now famous Smalley’s garage in the center of town. I
jacked the rear of the car up and installed a pipe plug
and got him back under way. He was so appreciative
of what I had done that I heard about that story for the
next 30 years. That is just how he was.
Arthur caught on soon and went on to become
an instructor in less than five years. Back then it took
much longer to become an Instructor as compared to
today. Everybody wanted to ride with him in his very
fast white turbo. He began giving rides to everyone that
asked and believe me there was no shortage of people
waiting to ride with him, including myself. Within the
next few years he had purchased another Porsche. I
remember the day “his baby” the 935 was dropped off
at Exclusive Motor Cars.
This car came from California in a huge enclosed
Horseless Carriage tractor trailer in several pieces. It
was beautiful and his eyes lit up when we took it out of
the trailer. This was a 750 hp Kremer 935 that won the
1980 Daytona 24 Hr race. It was still in its race trim,
the J David/John Fitzpatrick white and blue trim. That
car was insanely fast. Many of us remember getting
passed on the front straight at Bridgehampton like we
were standing still. He was Top Dog in the club and
everyone knew it. He had no problem soaking it all in.
He loved the attention.
Arthur went on to race the 935 in HSR vintage
racing where he won several races along the way, one
of them being the “Double Fifty” race at Watkins Glen.
This event signified 50 years of Porsche and 50 years
of Watkins Glen. At this event Porsche came with many
factory museum cars that were flown over from Stuttgart. This included the Gmund Coupe, the Moby Dick
935, the Factory 917s and many more. Arthur was racing in the class with other 935s including the Bob Akins
Coca-Cola car in which he was battling back and forth
for the lead. He would eventually pull ahead to win the
race. This was one of his “shining moments.
After about 4-5 yrs. of driving his first Porsche, the
white 930, the car got stolen right in the parking lot of
our shop. That was the last we saw of that car. It did not
take him long to find another candidate that he could
drive to the track. Arthur never wanted to trailer his
car, he would always drive to the track and back home
no matter how far away. His Next track car was a 1986
black factory Ruf BTR turbo. Our shop at the time had
since become the RUF/Porsche Distributor for the East
coast. We picked up a lot of tricks to take this car and
modify it even beyond the rocket ship it was.
We put a Ruf 6 speed trans, modified and installed
a Garrett turbo with custom headers. We were able to
squeak out a few extra ponies to enable him to run with
the heavy hitters of the day. Just about every week during the track season, he would take the car out to the
track. Whether it be an NNJR, Metro or CVR event, he
was not wasting any time, he would sign up for as many
as he could. We were replacing brake pads, tires and doing valve adjustments at a pace that no other PCA member could keep up with. Man, he just loved driving!
Art loved racing Porsches so much that he decided to get his feet wet in the professional ranks. First
competing in the IMSA Firestone Firehawk Showroom Stock series, driving a Dave White prepared 944
normally aspirated car. He competed mostly in the
endurance races like the 24 Hours of Watkins Glen in
Arts first white 930 at Lime Rock in 1983

ful. We took the car down to Daytona and Sebring again
in 1997 where we had some mechanical issues and
ended up coming up short that year. In 1998 I got the
bright idea to have the car painted in this wild black red
and yellow scheme. I got the idea from a 993 Cup car
scale model I had in my office. I sent the scale model to
Dave Kicak who at the time joined our team as a driver.
He owned a body shop in Syracuse NY called Free
Spirit Designs. He agreed to paint the car that same
color and design as my scale model. The car came out
spectacular and looked like a very good example only
in a wide body 993 turbo
I am not so sure Art liked it all that much but he
knew I did and that was enough to satisfy him. We
brought the car down to Sebring in 98 in its new livery
and during the practice session the day before the race
the clutch decided to come apart and exit through the
side of the bell housing. Much to my dismay I preceded
to pull the Trans, remove the clutch and send a fellow
NNJR member (Greg Wellence) all the way across the
state of Florida to Tampa at Dave Whites shop to pick
up this rare 935 style clutch pressure plate assembly.
Greg needed get it back to Sebring in time to put the car

back together in time for the race. We had to start in the
back of the field because we did not have any qualifying sessions on record. We started the race and managed
to work our way through the field to finish 22nd overall.
It was another memorable race and Art was very happy
and proud of us all, that night.
In the year 2000 we went down to Daytona again to
run the Rolex 24. It was another race to remember for
a few reasons. I was the crew chief that year and was
on the radio with the drivers over the Friday afternoon
practice sessions. The drivers were complaining about
having handling problems going through the horse shoe
and the other turns in the infield. They mentioned it was
oversteering in the left hand turns and understeering
in the right hand turns. Well Art had a great idea. He
went over to retrieve the late Bob Wollek, a well-known
Porsche factory driver who had quite a history with racing the Porsche brand.
Bob agreed to go out in the car to try to analyze
the handing concern with the car. I belted Bob in the
car and away he went out of the pits. He did not get
but ¾ of the way around the track when he radioed to
me in his French accent and said, “It feels like there is
something wrong in the left rear shock area, something
feels Broken I’m coming in.” He brought the car in and

we drove the car over to the garages, I lifted up the rear
deck lid and proceeded to inspect the area very closely
with a flash light. Wouldn’t you know I found a crack
in the weld for the left rear upper shock mount bracket.
I looked at Art and said that son of a gun was correct! I
removed the brace brought over to then the Champion
Race team and had it welded put in back in and the car
was now handling as designed. Art would always bring
up that moment in time for years to come, he was excited to tell this story.
In 2001 we went down to Daytona for our last effort. The Daytona 24Hr was a race that always seemed
to plague us with problems stemming from engines,
gearboxes etc. And this one was no exception. We had
two NNJR members who joined us for the driving duties that year. Skott Burkland a familiar name with us
veteran NNJR members and good a friend and client of
mine named Andrey Kosyvich. Art had taken the car out
for a practice run on Thursday to shake it out a bit and
then handed the car over to Skott Burkland. Skott took
the car a lap or so then on the second lap, got hit by
another car coming off the chicane on the back straight.
Skott brought the car in and we saw the whole right rear
suspension and body of the car badly damaged. The
damage was too extensive to repair in time for the race.
So we packed up and went home with our tails between
our legs. Art decided he had better focus on less expensive racing and continued with his Historic Racing
career with the 935 for some years to come.
Over the next few years he would wind down a
bit and continue to go to many DE events all over the
Northeast. He still had his black 86 Ruf car and would
drive it to each event. The motor on that car started to
show its age over the many events he had taken it to.
He decided to sell that car and drive his wife’s 84 928
S for a spell. He continued to drive the 928 but was not
fond of getting passed so much. He decided to purchase
a track prepared silver blue 1994 964 3.6 turbo. This car
had been prepared by Powertech for some time and I
believe owned previously by Charlie Boyer. This is the
car he had until present day and many of you reading
this article remember. It had been maintained mostly by
the guys from Protosport. John and Paul took good care
of the car for a number of years.
Art would drive this car until the early part of the
2015 season. Then we noticed he was starting to slow
down a bit. He would only go out for maybe 15 minutes
or so then bring the car back in. He said he would get
tired early and would have to pull in to rest. It was clear

to me at this time that there something was wrong so
I contacted his daughter Astrid and asked her to come
up because he was not getting any better. She quickly
drove up and took Art to get care and try to find out
what was going on. A few days later she called and
told me some sad news. He had fallen Ill with prostate
cancer. I was floored. I cared a great deal for this man
and loved him dearly. He was a huge part of my life for
over 34 years. Art passed away on Wednesday October
7 around 3pm alongside of his daughter Astrid and his
Brother Kenneth as well as other family members who
loved him very much.
I will always remember the Saturday breakfasts together for the past several years near my shop in Pompton Lakes in a small café called the Cardinal. He loved
going there to get his French toast to just relax and talk
Porsches among our friends. We all looked forward to
getting together each week to wind down.
Many people did not know Arthur’s accomplishments outside the track. He had an amazing life. His
first passion was healing people. He traveled all over
the world and held lectures and seminars on relieving
pain by Electro-Stimulus. He was the Godfather and
creator of this type of healing.
He studied at the University of Paris and spoke fluent French. He was an Electro chemist and had a Ph.D
in electrochemistry. He also invented the first FDA approved Bone Growth Stimulator. A device that stimulates bone growth with electromagnets. I remember
many times using his devices when I broke my wrist
and had other injuries over the years. He would always
say you have to catch the injury right away and treat it.
When we went to events together, I would just
watch people gather around to speak with him. He had
that certain Magnetic Quality about him and everyone
felt it. A large piece of my life is now missing. Arthur
was a true gentleman. He never had a bad word to say
about anyone. In all the time I knew him, I never even
heard him curse until the very recent months, which
was quite comical actually coming from him. I am still
waiting to hear him walk through my shop door with
his familiar deep voice calling out ‘Tony, my old boy”
Are you back there?
God Bless you Arthur Pilla!

ad to report that NNJR high-achievement Concours
Program recently lost one of its longtime high producing and award-winning members- Edward “Nick”
Neighbour.
NNJR will recall Ed’s recent Wednesday night program
presentations of his Amelia Island travels to record images
of that great concours show for all of us to enjoy. While fully
prepared with notes, Ed’s ability to offer indepth detail and
elaboration of on-screen images off-the-cuff and without
hesitation provided testimony to the passion he brought to
the subject matter and its delivery.
Of all the uber-fine Porsches that have played a role in
NNJR 60 year history, it is possible that Ed’s 1978 black
911 may have been entered into more concours competitive events and brought home more hardware than any other
NNJR-member Porsche. Over a 20-year period, Ed had entered his vehicle into no less than 288 shows, receiving 255
awards including achieving a remarkable 10 Best of Shows
and 145 Best in Class!
Those hundreds of high-end concours awards were
prominently displayed in the mini-museum and fullyequipped garage at his residence, including NNJR high30

est concours honors, the annual Mulhern Award which Ed
earned in 2002, along with his 1995 Veteran Championship
Season Cup.
Easy to believe Ed was concours focused, but he also
possessed significant technical prowess as evidenced by
serving as crew chief of a competition NHRA dragster team,
a critical post requiring organization, quick decision-making
along with hands-on mechanical aptitude.
An avid competitive runner beginning at the crosscountry high school state level, Ed advanced to become a
competitive master’s runner during the first running boom of
the ‘70’s, maintaining that competitiveness through the ‘80’s
and ‘90’s including running in both the New York City and
Boston Marathons.
A Seton Hall University graduate following attendance at
Lafayette College, Ed served as an Army Lieutenant during
the Cuban Missile Crisis before advancing onto a career as
an insurance executive.
Ed, thanks for your many contributions to the Porsche Club
over the years. We will miss you.

he morning of Sunday, October
25 did not start out so great. We
had rainy weather in Pennsylvania, where we started our journey.
Once we began the drive to New
Jersey, the skies cleared little by little.
The sun was peeking out from behind
the clouds and things were looking

up. I, personally, was quite excited,
granted that this was an Oktoberfest
event and I am a native German. Miranda and Alessia were in the backseat
of the car looking forward to what the
day would bring. James, as usual, was
trekking along excitedly, eager for the
event to begin. It was a massive relief
to hear that this was not going to be a
rally, but that it was just a trek. A trek,
to us, means no pressure - that is, no
pressure to Miranda, Alessia, and me.
We soon arrived at Ray Catena
Porsche and after we had our coffee and
doughnuts and listened to instructions,
the trek began. Andrea was in need of a
navigator, so my husband volunteered
our granddaughter, who gladly agreed.
In the end, Miranda really lucked out!
The mass of Porsches took off from the
parking lot of Ray Catena Porsche, taking us beyond Somerset Hills Learning
Institute, where our scenic drive on the
back roads started.
The colors of the changing season were beautiful, the winding roads
leading us to answers of the questions on our sheet. Whoever designed
the trek route truly had the beauty of
the countryside and the enjoyment of
participants in mind. Driving, we saw
Porsches coming and going, doubling
back to figure out the answers they had
missed, and we made a few U-turns of
our own.
Now, for the details of what occurred inside the Coleman Car, from a
I realized that many of them
have had the same issues
that my husband and I have.
Upon hearing about their
experiences, it occurred to
me that having women and
men drive separately could
be less chaotic for everyone,
not to mention, it would be
much more enjoyable. Just
as an aside, but what was (of
course) very important, was
the German food that was
served. It was delicious and
also very authentic. James,
Miranda, Alessia, and I all
enjoyed it greatly. We all had
our favorites, but none of us

female’s perspective. Alessia was in
the backseat, very excited to see the
sights that are so different from those
in her home country from Italy. James
swore that he would not interfere with
my navigation and that he would just
be quiet and follow my directions.
That lasted until we got to the first
question, to which the answer was
for all of you that did not get it - “the
hills.” His volume went from 1 to
100 in a matter of seconds, as he
insisted on seeing the map, questioned every instruction and wanted
to turn around to double-check road
signs. In other words, tempers began
to flare back and forth, until we
completed the first page of the trek.
This was the point at which I had no
alternative but to toss the paper in his
lap and say, “You navigate yourself!”
In the end, this worked out very well,
although he backtracked and extended our drive by 20 minutes.
Much to my surprise, we managed to win Ray Catena Porsche
hats, along with Miranda
and Andrea. As I said
before, Miranda lucked
out. She and Andrea spent
their drive joking, laughing and high-fiving. When
