The James P. Hollers Memorial Lectureship
As we honor Dr. James P. Hollers at the 29th
Annual Lectureship, we commemorate his
memory as a Texan with vision, numerous
civic and military achievements, and as a
dentist of national stature, having held the
post of President of the American Dental
Association. In celebrating his memory, we
have invited another prominent lecturer, Dr.
J. William Robbins, to present pertinent
clinical and relevant information at the 29th
Annual Hollers Lectureship.
James P. Hollers, D.D.S.
One of the turning point events in the long history of San Antonio took
place on June 5, 1969 in front of the Alamo under the blazing South
Texas sun. Preston Smith, Governor of Texas, signed the legislative bill
that authorized the construction of the Dental School in
San Antonio as well as the
Nursing School and The
University of Texas at San
Antonio. Proudly looking on,
just over Governor Smith's
shoulder, was Dr. Jim Hollers,
who on that day saw his twenty
year campaign to bring not
only a Dental School, but also Governor Preston Smith signs bill authorizing the
an entire Medical Center Dental School in San Antonio. (courtesy UTHSCSA)
Complex to San Antonio, transformed from dream to reality.
Without a doubt, the history of Medical Education in South Texas and
what we now know as the South Texas Medical Center is intertwined
with the history of Dr. Jim Hollers. If its true that every great enterprise
requires the right person, in the right place, at the right time…then Dr.
Jim Hollers was the right person, in the right place, at the right time for
San Antonio.
All the hard work paid off. When the 1969 Texas Legislature met in
January, there was little doubt that San Antonio would emerge with a
Dental School. And the third piece of Dr. Hollers' dream fell into place
just a few months later in the Alamo Plaza as he stood behind Preston
Smith, watching the Governor sign the authorization.
Planning for the Dental
School moved ahead quickly,
assisted in no small measure
by the availability of millions
of dollars of construction
funds from the Department
of Health Education and
Welfare who agreed to pay
two-thirds of the costs of the
new building. The original
plan was to enroll the first
Dental School class after the
building was completed but Dr. Hollers shows Governor John Connally site for the
the Acting Dean of the Medical School (courtesy the Institute of Texan Culture)
School, Dr. Victor Olson,
who was also Dean of The University of Texas Health Science
Center at Houston, Dental Branch, obtained enough additional funding
from the Legislature to open the School in the fall of 1970 in a
temporary facility.
Dr. Billy Rigsby came to San Antonio from Houston with Dr. Victor
Olson and was in on the ground floor of planning in 1970. Drs. Olson,
Rigsby, and many other faculty members who signed on in the first year
worked round the clock to blue print the facility and ensure it was
state-of-the-art.

Lecture Course
“Global Diagnosis” - A new Vision of Dental Diagnosis and Treatment Planning
J. William Robbins, D.D.S., M.A.
OVERVIEW
With the increased emphasis on interdisciplinary treatment in recent years, the
deficiencies associated with traditional methods of diagnosis and treatment planning have
become more evident and problematic. Historically, the treatment plan was
primarily dictated by information provided by study casts which were mounted on a
sophisticated articulator in centric relation. At that time in history, the primary tools
available for treating the complex restorative patient were functional crown
lengthening surgery and increasing the vertical dimension of occlusion. The treatment
plan was simply based on restorative space, anterior tooth coupling and resistance and
retention form of the final preparations, with no focus on placing the teeth in the
correct position in the face. Practitioners did not have access to advanced periodontal,
orthodontic and orthognathic surgical tools that are currently available. With the advent
and common usage of these new treatment modalities, the historical method of
diagnosis and treatment planning is no longer adequately serving our profession. It is the
purpose of this course to provide a systematic approach to diagnosis and treatment
planning with a common language that may be used by the orthodontist, periodontist,
and oral and maxillofacial surgeon, as well as the restorative dentist.

A short while ago, you were informed by President William Henrich that he will be taking a medical leave
of absence, probably through the end of this calendar year. We fully expect that he will recover rapidly and
completely to return to the Presidency of the Health Science Center. We wish him a quick and easy course
of treatment.
Dean Kenneth Kalkwarf has agreed to serve as the President ad interim until Dr.
Henrich’s return.
Dean Kalkwarf has served since 1988 as Dean of The University of Texas Health Science
Center at San Antonio Dental School. During this time, the school has been ranked
among the very top Dental Schools in America. In his distinguished career, Dr. Kalkwarf
has been the author of over 175 article chapters and abstracts in professional journals. In
2009 he received the American Dental Association’s highest award -- the Distinguished
Service Award. He has been very active in the San Antonio community and has experience dealing with public policy issues. He has also been very active in his professional societies, both locally
and nationally.
We are very grateful to Dean Kalkwarf for his willingness to assume this responsibility. Dr. William Dodge
will serve as the Interim Dean of the Dental School during this period. We appreciate his service as well.

HSC News
It is with mixed emotions that I inform you that I will step down as Dean of the Dental
School, and retire from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, at
the conclusion of my role as Interim President.
I see a great opportunity to merge all of the changes (Dental Hygiene, Basic Sciences,
New Clinical Facility, CODA Standards, National Boards) that are occurring around us
into an environment supporting a much better model for dental education. Being
involved in the final creation of that model would be exciting. However, I realize the
exhilaration, and responsibility, of creating a new model belongs to those who will function within it.
My twenty-five years at the Dental School are most memorable, and have been the highlight of my academic career. It was made that way by the quality of the faculty members that create and advance our academic
programs, the quality of the staff members that maintain and improve all the components of our supporting infrastructure, and the quality of our students who spend an important stage of their life with us, and
then go on to advance our profession.
Thanks to all of you for making this a GREAT place!
I look forward to working with Bill Dodge, as Interim Dean of the Dental School, and
all of you, as we continue to move the School forward over the next several months in
preparation of welcoming a new Dean.
- Ken

This is our tenth year of transitioning your Alumni Association to establish a stronger and more efficient operation within the

UT Health Science Center at San Antonio Dental Alumni Association proudly announces the 2012 honoree of the
Distinguished Faculty and Service Award Richard H. Carr, Jr., D.D.S. Endowed Scholarship Award Honoree
James B. Summitt, D.D.S., M.S.
The graduates of the Dental School of The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio fondly remember the many dedicated faculty and staff

dental education.
To recognize the dedication of our faculty and staff, the Dental Alumni Association established the Distinguished Faculty and Service Award–Richard H.

The David E. Snyder
Luncheons for Learning Series
The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio,
Dental School • Office of Continuing Dental Education
FORMAT
One day a month a speaker discusses a dental topic during lunch. The sessions are
informal and the group has an opportunity to interact with the speaker during a short
discussion period at the end of the lecture. It requires only about one and one-half
hour of your time to learn the latest developments in many areas of dentistry. It also
offers the opportunity to get better acquainted with your colleagues and their staff
since all dental allied personnel and technicians are also invited to attend.
COURSE DIRECTOR
DAVID E. SNYDER, D.D.S., came from a dental family.
His father graduated from Northwestern in 1915, practiced in a small South Dakota town for two years and
joined the Navy Dental Corps in 1917 because of the
World War. He stayed in the Navy for 35 years and then
practiced in a small Washington town for a few years. Dr.
Snyder heard many tales about how dentistry “used to be
practiced.” His older brother was also a dentist from the
time of graduation in 1950 until the day he died in 1994.
Dr. David Snyder entered the University of Washington
Dental School in 1950, just at the beginning of the Korean
War. After graduation in 1954 he served in the Navy Dental Corps for three years,
two of which were spent on the USS Nereus, a submarine tender home ported in San
Diego, California. After his discharge, he opened a dental practice in San Diego.
While still in the Navy he had joined a gold foil study club, which was mentored by
Dr. James P. Vernetti. Dr. Vernetti remained a mentor for over twenty years. He mentored the foil clubs at UCLA and UTHSCSA. Dr. Snyder followed Dr. Vernetti to
Texas in 1975 and tried to continue the gold foil traditions. He kept teaching gold
foil until around 1986 when the last jurisdiction stopped requiring foils on the
licensing exams.
Accounts of “old dentistry” from his father, teachings of dental schools of the 1950’s,
and tricks learned from Dr. Vernetti encouraged Dr. Snyder to teach senior dental students several alternative techniques. Some of them, such as the intra-osseous local
anesthetic injections taught by Dr. Vernetti in the 1960’s, became popular in our
Texas school decades later. Most of the old techniques have been judged as unnecessary or dropped because of compressed curriculum.
TIME
11:30 AM - 1:00 PM The second Thursday of each month (Subject to change due to
state meetings or holidays)

Sterilizer Monitoring Service
TDA ADVISES DENTISTS TO FOLLOW TSBDE RULES TO THE LETTER. TSBDE Rule 108.24(b)(5) states: “Sterilization equipment and its adequacy shall be
tested and verified in accordance with the American Dental Association (ADA) Recommendations.”
ADA and CDC RECOMMEND WEEKLY VERIFICATION AND DOCUMENTATION OF INSTRUMENT STERILIZATION (i.e. sterilizer monitoring) on each
sterilizer. Sterilization of high-speed dental hand-pieces between patients is now recommended by CDC, ADA, FDA and required by at least some state dental boards.
Biological monitors are recognized as the best indicator of the presence or absence of living microorganisms. Biological indicators are used to challenge
sterilizers and are the only devices, which, can integrate all process parameters required for sterilization. Those parameters measured include: temperature, time, degree of steam
saturation, degree of steam purity, penetration of sterilant through obstacles such as wrapping, trapped air, and other goods being sterilized. Results of laboratory tests serve as
a tangible record as well as a legal device where proof of sterilization must be provided.
The Board of Directors of the Dental School Alumni Association provides a sterilizing monitoring service. The money from the use of this service has two benefits: one-the
product and the service, and two-to support programs benefiting dental students and alumni. You do not need to be a member of the Dental School Alumni Association to
participate in the Sterilizer Monitoring Service.
Our spore strip kits can be used in steam, chemical vapor, dry heat and ethylene oxide gas sterilizers. Each kit contains two (1) test strip to confirm sterile conditions throughout the chamber, and one (1) control strip to guarantee accurate results, and a return mailer for confirmation of test results. The culturing service is included in the price of the
kit.
Culture reports are mailed on a quarterly basis. In the event that you have a positive culture result you will be notified immediately by phone and a laboratory report will be
sent to you.
Remember to place your spore monitoring kit in a fully loaded sterilizer with regular wrapped instruments.
Before you begin, you should be aware of the most common problems resulting in positive culture results:
•Overloaded chambers
•Failure to preheat the sterilizer
•Improper cleaning of items before sterilization
•Setting the time and/or temperature too low
•Interruption of the cycle
•Tightly wrapped packages.
We look forward to your participation in this program.
