Case Study - Leah Barfield
I used the grant from the Peterborough
Educational Trust to buy a new camera which
is more professional and advanced than my
previous one. Having the new camera has
opened up more opportunities such as working
with Peterborough Council, photo shoots for
clients, supporting a wedding photographer and
even working with the red arrows. I have then
used these experiences to build up my portfolio
for my course - BTEC Level 3 Photography. I am
half way through my two year course and aspire
to go onto university and study photography at
degree level. Building a strong portfolio will help
me at university interviews and I can also use it
to show potential clients in the future.
How do I apply for an Advanced Learner Loan?
• You will need an offer from the College, proof of
identification, residency details and a funding letter
provided by the College. Please ask for the funding
letter from the Information Centre
• Applications can be submitted online from June
2016 directly to the Student Loans Company:
www.gov.uk/advanced-learning-loans
Where can I find out more?

• Please come into our Information Centre for further
help and advice about funding. Alternatively you can

Apprenticeships
Earn while you learn with an
Apprenticeship
Introduction
If you want to earn while you learn, an Apprenticeship
could be just what you’re looking for. Our
Apprenticeship team helps over 400 people like you
into free or subsidised, work-based training with local
employers each year and works hard to ensure that
you are in the right job with the level of support that
you need.
What are Apprenticeships?
An Apprenticeship is a job with a development
programme designed by employers in the relevant
sector. This allows apprentices to gain technical
knowledge and real practical experience, along
with functional and personal skills, required for their
immediate job and future career. These are achieved
through a mix of learning in the workplace, formal
off-the-job training and the opportunity to practice and
embed new skills in a real work context. You, your
employer and the College will agree an individual
learning plan of what you are going to achieve and
how.
What hours will I work?
You will be employed full-time (minimum of 30 hours
per week).
12
Earn while you learn
All apprentices must receive the appropriate national
minimum wage. Apprenticeship National Minimum
Wage rate does not apply to Higher Apprenticeships.
If you are 19 or over when you start your training you
will have to be on an Apprenticeship programme for a
year before the national minimum wage will be applied
and then it will be at a special rate. The Apprenticeship
team at the College can help with this.
What will I need?
For some Apprenticeships, and to work with some
employers, you will need specific GCSE passes or
previous experience. You will also have an interview,
where we look at your GCSE grades (actual or
predicted), which will help us to decide on the best
programme for you.

Traineeships ou Ready For Work?
Are you looking for the right opportunity to start your
working career or make that step into an Apprenticeship?
If the answer is yes, then why not try a Traineeship?
Traineeships prepare young people for their future careers
by helping them to become ‘work ready’. They can be
a stepping stone to an Apprenticeship or other work;
Trainees will develop their skills through meaningful work
experience. Traineeships are an excellent route into
employment that bridges the gap between study and work.
We have new Traineeships available in the following
areas:
• Business Administration
• Construction
• Hair and Beauty
• Horticulture/Landscaping
• Hospitality
Traineeships are a new opportunity for young people aged
16-24 years old and are designed to develop workplace
skills and give significant work experience.
What is involved in a Traineeship?
• All trainees complete valuable work experience that
has real job role responsibilities for a period of up to 6
months
• Trainees are given an initial short preparation period in
college and then progress to 1 day a week in college
and up to 4 days a week in the work place
• Traineeships are flexible. Trainees are encouraged to
progress into work or apprenticeships at the earliest
opportunity
• Trainees spend time developing their maths, English
and work related skills during their college study day
Traineeships are available to start throughout the year.

University Centre Peterborough
The ultra modern and contemporary £10 million University Centre is located on Peterborough Regional College
grounds, and was a joint venture with Anglia Ruskin University. It has a specially designed 92 seat lecture
theatre, a range of multi-purpose/size seminar and teaching rooms, state-of-the-art computer rooms, a cafe and
several social areas. In addition, those on Journalism and Media degrees have access to the state-of-the-art
Media and Journalism Satellite Centre.
The wide range of courses provided at UCP help students acquire knowledge and skills relevant to local
businesses, industries and public services. The University Centre also provides services direct to the business
community, aiding innovation, product and service development and the ‘up-skilling’ of the local workforce.
Our portfolio of courses is constantly being revised and updated to take account of the emerging needs and
aspirations of our local market.
At UCP we are proud of our achievements and these successes are attributed to:
• Degree success - Overall degree classifications remain high, with 100% of Engineering students achieving 2:1
or above in 2015
• Employability - We have excellent links with local businesses for placements, paid internships and
post-graduation employment (BGL/ Compare the Market, city schools, Larkfleet, City Fibre, Saffery
Champness and Peterborough Cathedral to name just a few)
• National Student Survey results – The BA (Hons) Psychosocial Studies achieved a 100% satisfaction rate
according to the National Student Survey 2015
• Supportive environment - We are dedicated to your success and will do everything in our power to help you
achieve your goals. Whether you need some extra help with your studies or just a supportive ear before and
during your time with us, we have a number of dedicated members of staff to help you
CASE STUDY
Emily Rickell – BA (Hons) Archaeology and Landscape History
“I recently attained an exciting job as Visitors Services Assistant at Buckingham Palace. Having the confidence to
apply for the job in the first place has come from tutors inspiring me to work hard so I can reap the rewards after
my degree. The job position will allow me to experience a varied environment as I will be dealing with hundreds
of tourists/visitors every day. I will be aiming to meet their different needs whilst remaining composed and
presentable. This will test everything that I’ve learnt at University Centre Peterborough and I feel I am more than
prepared to face the reality of the wider world when I complete my course.”

Terms and Conditions
Course costs and fees
The cost of the whole course of study is stated in the
prospectus. On some courses you are required to
enter and pay for the examination and/or registration
fee directly to the awarding body.
In the event of default on any payments, the full
balance will immediately become due. Where
necessary any debt may be referred to the College’s
agent for collection, which could incur a referral fee.
Financial help and support
Enrolling on a course of study lasting
more than one year
The Government guidelines regarding fees and
financial assistance are complex and constantly
changing. For up-to-date advice please contact one of
our information advisers who will be able to help with
any questions or concerns you may have. Please visit
us in the Information Centre or call us on
0345 872 8722.
How can I pay
The College is delighted to be able to offer you a
choice of how you pay your course fees.
You may either pay your fees in full in one amount prior
to the start of your course, or by paying one third of
your fee before your course starts and the remaining
amount in equal instalments. You may choose the
number of instalments as long as the last instalment is
paid 3 months before the end of your course.*
The latter option is called the “FlexEd PayPlan” and
is administered by a company called Oriel, trading as
FlexEd. If you choose to pay in this way, your details
will be forwarded to them. Instalments are offered for
courses with fees over £350.00. There is an additional
administration fee of £6 per instalment. For courses
with fees below £350.00, payment will need to be
made in full before your course starts.
*This does not apply to those learners aged 19+ where the course they
wish to enrol on is eligible for a ‘19+ Advanced Learning Loan’.
Refunds
In the unlikely event that the College has to cancel
your course, we will refund your fees. The College
does not refund monies if you choose to leave the
course before completion and any outstanding
instalments will remain due. A copy of the College’s
refund policy is available on request.
Enrolment
Courses can fill up quickly and we do advise you enrol
as early as possible to secure a place on your chosen
course. You need to enrol before the start of your
course and get your ID card in order for you to access
the College. You won’t be admitted to classes until
you have enrolled on your chosen course and paid
the appropriate fee, except where fees are paid by
employers, other authorities or by instalments through
FlexEd. The fee quoted on the receipt is subject to
verification and corrections will be notified.
26
All enrolments are for one year only, even though a
course may be longer than one year. If your course of
study is for more than one year, you will be required to
pay the tuition fee for the whole course of study in the
first year, unless otherwise stated, e.g. HNCs HNDs.
Exams
Students must speak to their teachers about the
examinations they will be entered for. Subject teachers
will contact the exams office for entry information. If
there are changes to entries after the exam board
deadline then it is the students responsibility to pay for
the amendment/late entry. In some cases late entries/
amendments cannot be made. The exams office must
be advised of any access arrangements needed in
exams for example on medical grounds or disability, as
soon as the requirement is known. If you miss an exam
due to illness then you must contact the exams office
for advice. If you are ill during an exam then you must
also contact the exams office.
