perhaps the most intense experience of
these parts, are the intense colours, that
particular harmony of the vivid blue of
the sea and over it the dark green of pine
trees or olive groves that descend all the
way to the shore. And to all that the brilliant white of the Dalmatian stone must
be added – it forms the beaches either in
slabs or broken down into gravel or pebbles, attracting numerous tourists…
This is a region which numbers as many
as 200 island and isles, with only 17 of
them being inhabited. Come the summer, their lives become very dynamic dynamic but not stressful. At other times
they are peaceful and totally relaxed. This
is a region boasting no less than 3000
years of continuous human habitation
that has been recorded in streets and
squares of cities like Zadar, the centre of

W hen
to hear the sounds of Dalmatian chanson, to sing with a klapa, or
to enjoy the beauty of nature, or the
Robinson-kind of tourism of the Kornati
archipelago, the rampant waters of the
river Krka, or to take a journey into some
long gone times – then the direction is a
known thing. The region of Šibenik.
Two national parks with only 50km
between them could not be more different. The Kornati National Park is an
archipelago of 89 islands, isles and reefs
(numbering in total 152 units) of incomparable beauty which offers the boaters
the pleasure of sailing, the formidable
sheer cliffs filling them with delight and
awe in the same breath. Enchanted with
their striking beauty, the famous writer
George Bernard Shaw wrote one of the
best descriptions of the Kornati: “On
the last Day of Creation God wished to
crown his work and he created Kornati
out of tears, stars and breath”. In contrast, the Krka National Park is full of
travertine barriers, waterfalls and lakes
the wondrousness of which take one’s
breath away. Indeed, they are regarded
as one of the favourite tourist picture
postcards from Croatia.
Indeed, it is difficult to decide which
national park is more beautiful, which
makes them a good example for yet another of life’s lessons: beauty will not
compare to beauty, it just needs to be
enjoyed. And it is this very diversity of
the sea and the river phenomena that
best depicts all the beauty and all the
surprises found in the Dalmatian region
of Šibenik. A significant role in this belongs to the Šibenik hinterland – visiting it you take a journey into an almost
forgotten way of life and customs, but
also an opportunity to learn about
indigenous herbs and vegetables the
flavours, aromas and colours of which
will take you back through time, like a
true time machine.
The royal city of Knin – situated in
the place where roads from the mainland intersect on their way to the sea

monuments and natural attractions

Also of interest is the old town of Drniš
in the vicinity of which is the village
of Otavice where the world-famous
Croatian sculptor Ivan Meštrović built
his family mausoleum.
A visit to this region is an opportunity
to see the city of Šibenik, the oldest

Adriatic. Its cathedral of St. Jacob, a
unique monument of the European
sacral architecture, has been included
in the UNESCO List of world heritage.
Šibenik is the venue of numerous cultural manifestations, among them the
International Child’s Festival, the Festival of Dalmatian Chansons, etc. Those
who come do not forget the vibrancy of
Vodice, the diverse opportunities and
picturesque quality of Primošten and its
incredible vineyards the photograph of
which is exhibited in the UN building as
a kind of accolade to human effort.
The island of Murter, separated from the
mainland by a narrow Murter channel
which is spanned by a 12 m long bascule
bridge at Tisno, is an attractive place for
boaters but also for all those who long
for a holiday in unspoiled nature.
But these are by no means all on the list
of tourist destinations and attractions
which draw large numbers of tourists,
and which are the reason that one does
not come to Dalmatia-Šibenik once, but

Dubrovnik region is a place of beautiful nature, intoxicating fragrances

Lavender grows in the Littoral and on the

Laurel grows along the coastline and on

Sage
Sage is found on the islands and all along

Sweet balm
Mint
Sweet balm grows all along the Adriatic
coastline, and it is used in food preparation and as an ingredient in liqueurs. Its
dried leaves are used to make teas both
aromatic and medicinal. Mixed with the
essential oil of lemon it is used in aromatherapies and in cosmetics industry.
Yarrow
Yarrow is found all along the Adriatic
coast. It is used as seasoning, and its
medicinal properties make it popular as
a herbal beverage. It can be picked from
February to June, best before it reaches a
full flower.
In Croatia there are twelve indigenous
types of mint, and due to their aroma of
menthol they all have the same or similar
application. The exception is the Dalmatian mint which has a lemony scent. It is
used as a seasoning, addition to dishes or
is prepared as tea. It is of course used in
cosmetics industry and in aroma-therapy.
Wild olive
Wild olive is found in southern Croatia, in
dry and rocky places close to the sea. Its
fruit is used to obtain olive oil, but they
are not as juicy as those of a cultivated
type. The oil is used as addition to different dishes of the Mediterranean cuisine

Myrtle
Fennel
Fennel grows along the Littoral, on the
islands but also in the hinterland. It is a
very popular seasoning in the Mediterranean. Its essential oil is obtained by way

Myrtle is found on the islands and along
the central and southern Adriatic coast.

Rosemary

Tradition of health tourism in Croatia is over
150 years long. It is therefore no wonder
that the country has a well developed,
quality educational system which includes
secondary schools (four-year programme)
and two-year advanced schools of physical therapy, with a network of specialized
wellness schools being now developed.
Wellness centres frequently employ graduated kinesiologists, many have medical staff
and offer health checks and they base their

Customs regulations
Customs regulations in the Republic of Croatia
are almost completely harmonised with the
regulations and standards of EU member states,
but the value of items of a non-commercial nature
for personal use which may be brought into the
country without paying tax duty or VAT is limited
to 1.000 HRK (kuna).
Foreign citizens and Croatian citizens with foreign
residence may bring in to, or take out of, Croatia,
foreign or local currencies by cash or cheque without restriction, but amounts exceeding 10,000
euros must be declared to a customs official upon
arrival in, or departure from, Croatia.
Valuable professional equipment and technical
devices must also be declared to a customs official
at a border crossing.
VAT is refunded to foreign nationals when leaving the country in respect of individual goods
purchased in Croatia, for amounts exceeding 740
programmes on the results of those checks.
The programmes of all schools and universities have been aligned with the regulations
of the European Union. According to the
valid legislation of the Republic of Croatia all
therapist must have the required certificate
of the successfully completed professional
education.
Unique and irreplaceable
While staying in Croatia you can take advantage of enjoying the benefits of thalassotherapy for which the conditions here are ideal. By
definition, thalassotherapy is the use of natural
medicinal physical and chemical properties
of the sea and the littoral with the aim of
treatment, rehabilitation, prevention and revitalization. The word thalassotherapy originates
from the Greek word thalassos – the sea. The
properties of the sea which have impact on
our health are the temperature and humidity
of air, velocity of wind, temperature of the sun
and its radiation, purity of air and absence of
allergenic agents, presence of essential oils,
sodium-chloride, fluoride and iodine. The use
of fresh sea water encourages the exchange
of minerals and toxins between the body and
the water.
The Adriatic Sea is exceptionally rich in minerals and living organisms, and its properties
and effects cannot be substituted, artificially
produced or stored for more than 24 hours.
Croatia has a long-standing tradition in thalassotherapy, and health resorts administering
thalassotherapy are located in Crikvenica,
HRK (kuna) per purchase excluding VAT, upon
presentation of a Tax Cheque form certified by a
customs official when the goods are taken out of
the country. The PDV-P i.e. Tax Cheque form must
be certified within 3 months of purchase, or of
the receipt date for goods delivered. The request
for the refund of VAT must be submitted within 6
months of the date of purchase.

importing products of animal origin in personal

Currency
The kuna (1 kuna = 100 lipa). Foreign currency
can be exchanged in banks, exchange offices,
post offices travel agencies and hotels.
Post and telecommunications
Post offices are open from 8 a.m. – 8 p.m. on
weekdays. Certain post offices in larger towns are
open from 7 a.m. – 8 p.m. on work days and from
7 a.m. – 1 p.m. on Saturday and the central post
office situated in Branimirova 4, 10000 Zagreb is
open every day from 0 – 24.

How long should one stay?
The World Health Organization recommends
the Mediterranean cuisine as the healthiest one. On the basis of numerous studies
that have been carried out it was concluded
that people who opted for this type of diet
are exposed to a lower risk of suffering from
cardio-vascular and malignant diseases.
It has also been statistically proved that people
living in the Mediterranean live longer lives
than the rest of Europeans. Scientific studies
tell us that the credit it goes to olive oil, fruit
and vegetable, fish oils and wine. Here too
Croatia has an advantage – fresh, traditionally
grown produce simply prepared by boiling in
salted water or steamed, the sun and a lot of
physical activity are the winning combination:
pleasant, tasty and healthy – what more can
one want!
In addition to the local Mediterranean and the
international cuisines, special diets adjusted to
specific medical conditions of individual guest
can be served providing an advanced notification has been given.
If the tempo of your life and the obligations
you have do not allow for a prolonged stay,
a week or even a weekend of abandoning
yourself to the benefits of an active holiday
will greatly benefit your physical and spiritual
wellbeing. Allow us to remind you – in order
to be as advantageous as possible, a brief stay
requires a more precise time schedule. We
therefore recommend advance booking of the
desired treatments. Most wellness centres offer
a weekly, monthly or longer period membership advantages which allows the members to
have more treatments at favourable prices. In
order to be able to use the wellness services
immediately upon your arrival, and to select
either the wellness package or the individual
treatments that are the best for you, request
that the instruction and the list of available
programmes and treatments be sent to prior
to your arrival.
And one more thing – the Mediterranean
climate is an additional bonus to you wellness
enjoyment, so when here – go for walks, breath
the sea air, go swimming. Walking through
woods and breathing fresh air is just as beneficial for one’s health, so a stay in the continental
part of the country will have strong impact on
your overall wellbeing.

organized your journey.

During the tourist season, most shops are open
from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. on weekdays, and most
are open during the weekends as well.
Public services and business offices work from 8
a.m. until 4 p.m., Mondays to Fridays.
Health services
There are hospitals and clinics located in all the
larger towns and cities, while smaller centres have
surgeries and pharmacies.
Foreign visitors who are covered by health insurance in their own country do not have to pay for
the emergency health care during their private
stay in the Republic of Croatia if a convention
on Social Security has been signed between
the country they come from and Croatia. This is
on the condition that they possess a certificate
stipulated by such a convention confirming their
right to health care. Health care (including transport) is used for emergency cases in the manner
and according to regulations valid for Croatian
citizens covered by Social Security, with identical
participation in health care costs (participation
and administrative surcharges). Persons from
