Dear Students,
Welcome back to Bellin College! I hope this finds you rested and ready to begin
your 2016 spring semester classes. We have many exciting initiatives going on at
the College this semester. While you were off, we began construction work on the
Sonography space in the lower level. Please pardon our dust and small amount of
noise. The majority of the work was completed over the holiday break. The new
space will include two, high tech classrooms with user friendly seating that allows
students and faculty to create the best working space for a teaching and learning
environment. A special thank you to the students who provided input into the
seating space. We are hoping that all will be completed with furniture by the end
of March. If you have questions, please do not hesitate to ask.
We’ve also been the host to many high school groups from Northeast Wisconsin
who are interested in what we have to offer. We are working on a partnership
with a few of these schools to offer CNA programs, helping these students take the
first steps in their successful careers. We hope many of these students will choose
to come to Bellin College to further their education. If you have a chance to meet
any of the high school groups, I encourage you to do so and help us make them
feel welcome.
January brings unpredictable winter weather. In Wisconsin, this weather can last
well into March. Please review the policy on cancellations and be sure to have
your contact information current at the One Stop Shop. A text message will be
sent if the college needs to close early, open late or cancel due to the weather.
Announcements will also be on the website and local TV/radio stations. Please
note: the call-in phone option will be discontinued.
I hope you have a great start to the spring semester. The grass will soon be green
and the flowers in full bloom. We are very blessed to experience the four seasons
and the beauty it brings. Best of luck and stop by and say ‘Hi’!

You Spoke, We Listened
Have you ever wondered after filling out
survey after survey if anyone ever looks at what
you say? At Bellin College, the answer is an
emphatic yes! Changes do take time, and not
every suggestion or comment is adopted, but
we do listen and value your constructive
comments. Here is one recent example where
you spoke, and we listened:
There is a great deal to be gained from
experiencing healthcare and culture outside
of our local comfort zone. In the past, a few
students have completed mission trips or
international travel courses through outside
organizations. On occasion, these experiences
have counted toward specific course
requirements, but the arrangements were
made on an individual basis. An increasing
number of students have requested travel
opportunities and the college has heard and
responded to these requests. In the Bellin
College guide – handbook and catalog is a
travel course policy.
It is possible for students to apply travel
experiences coordinated through Bellin College,
an outside university or a private group for course
credit. In order to do this, students must plan
ahead.
Before finalizing a trip, students must meet with
their program director and faculty of the course
the travel experience is intended to replace, to
assure that the travel experience fits within the
curriculum plan and the course requirements.
Travel courses might meet the requirements for a
general education or a community health clinical
requirement. If the course is intended to replace a
course in the curriculum, tuition costs will still
apply above and beyond the cost of the travel.
Taking a travel course is not required, but is now a
viable option to be incorporated into the plan of study.
Previous students have traveled to Guatemala, Haiti,
Africa, Mexico, and other countries. Imagine the rich,
diverse learning experiences that can be gained.
Elsewhere in this newsletter, Dr. Stewart discusses the
newly launched committee designed to advance our
travel opportunities. Please talk to your program
director or dean if you have additional questions.
Please let us know if you have any questions and know
that we do listen. You may not directly benefit from
changes that are made based on your feedback, but
your constructive comments do improve experiences
for future students.

Starting Monday, January 18, Practice Lab will be open
Monday – Thursday, 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Friday’s
from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Additional open practice
hours this semester will include:

Faculty Assistant, will also be available to assist with

The HSRC has a new adult high fidelity mannequin for the
ED / ICU room. Set up and faculty training will occur in
early March, and he will be introduced to faculty &
students after this time.
The practice lab will be closed on Friday, Feb. 19
through Monday, Feb 22 for a Disaster Drill.

Bellin College welcomes another cohort to the RN to
BSN program from Bellin Health for January 2016. Join
us in welcoming the new students!
Thank you to those students who participated in
Interprofessional Education last semester. We have had
two successful experiences this past fall with Medical
College of Wisconsin students, undergraduate and
graduate nursing students and radiologic science
students. We will have another session on February
22nd with more immersive simulations. We look
forward to having student input into our upcoming
project.

KAPLAN ORIENTATION
On Monday, Feb. 8th, Brian Rosseler from Kaplan will be here from 1:00p – 2:00p in room 112 to provide an
orientation to the Kaplan student website and resources. This session is required for the 15 month May 2017
cohort. Any other nursing students are welcome to attend to get a refresher on how to get the most out of the
Kaplan resources.

The purpose of these sessions is to increase nursing student knowledge
related to the eight client-need areas on the NCLEX-RN exam. Suggested
participants are May 2016 graduates, but all are welcome.
The sessions are two hours long and no preparation is necessary.
Questions regarding NCLEX preparation resources?
For each client need area, there will be a short content review and
students will answer sample questions on the client need area.
Faculty will also answer student questions and advise on NCLEX-RN prep.

GradReady presents all topics in an easy to

manage your education loan debt and establish a
monthly budget. Because GradReady is a secure site,
you are the only person with access to your account
information (only you can see your budget, your loan
information, or anything else you enter into GradReady).

FAFSA Filers Step Up to the Plate
It’s January. As you may know, this means that
the 2016-2017 FAFSA is now available on the
www.fafsa.gov website.
While it is a bit early, students and parents may file the
FAFSA for next academic year at any time—as soon as
the 2015 income tax data is available. You may file your
FAFSA using estimated income tax data. HOWEVER, if
you (and/or your parents) choose to do so, you will
need to make corrections once the taxes are completed
(ie. change the tax filing status to ‘Completed’ and make
any necessary changes to the reported tax figures).

Bellin college has begun to support more off-campus
national and international offerings. The Friends of Haiti
Board approved a trip planned for spring, 2016. The first
group will travel April 11 – 17, the second group will
travel April 18 – 22. Arrangements will be made for
Bellin College classes missed. This trip will meet the
requirements for the senior level Community/Public
Health Clinical Course (NUR 422). Another trip to Haiti
will be offered in October, 2016 during the session gap.

The TRIPS program has just returned from a service trip
to Chicago. A student-lead trip to Guatemala left on
January 10. Bellin College will also be offering a study
tour to South America during spring break 2017. We
have formed a work group of faculty to explore further
national and international opportunities. Stay tuned for
future updates.

Title IX: Addressing Sexual Harassment
and Sexual Violence

Bellin College is committed to maintaining a living,
working, and educational environment free from sexual
harassment, sexual violence, and sex discrimination. It is
the policy of Bellin College to comply with Title IX. Title IX
of the Education Amendments of 1972 (Title IX) is a
federal civil rights law that prohibits discrimination on
the basis of sex in federally funded educational programs
and activities. Title IX prohibits sex discrimination in all
College programs and activities, including, but not limited
to, admissions, recruiting, financial aid, academic
programs, student services, counseling, discipline, roster
assignment, grading, and employment.
Sexual harassment is any unwelcome conduct of a sexual
nature, which includes, but is not limited to, unwelcome
sexual advances; the use or threatened use of sexual
favors as a basis for academic or employment decisions;
conduct that creates a hostile, intimidating or offensive
academic or working environment; conduct that has the
effect of unreasonably interfering with an individual's
work performance; and other verbal, nonverbal, or
physical conduct of a sexual nature that is sufficiently
severe, persistent, or pervasive to limit a person's ability
to participate in or benefit from an educational program
or activity. Sexual violence, including sexual assault, is a
prohibited form of sexual harassment.
Title IX also prohibits retaliation against people for
making or participating in complaints of sex
discrimination.
Students, staff, and faculty who become aware of
conduct that might violate these policies are urged to
promptly report the conduct. Bellin College prohibits
retaliation against anyone for making a complaint of
discrimination or harassment, for assisting someone
else in making such a complaint, or for participating in
an investigation of discrimination or harassment.
Bellin College has designated a Title IX coordinator
(Dr. Nancy Burruss, Dean of Student Services), two
Deputy Title IX coordinators (Russ Leary, Registrar;
Katie Wall, Director of Enrollment Management) and
a Title IX Advocate (Janelle Maricque, Counselor) who
will address complaints of sexual harassment, sexual
violence, and sex discrimination.

ALL STUDENTS MUST COMPLETE THE MANDATORY TRAINING COURSE PREVENTING DISCRIMINATION AND
SEXUAL VIOLENCE: TITLE IX, VAWA, AND CLERY ACT FOR UNDERGRADUATE,
GRADUATE STUDENTS, AND STUDENT EMPLOYEES.
Your mandatory training course was delivered to your Bellin College email account
from Workplace Answers eLearning. Most of you have completed your training course
but if you have not, you MUST do this by Friday, January, 29 th. We are committed to
this initiative and require 100% compliance. Please do your part.

Emergency Procedures &
Campus Safety
Students should familiarize themselves with the Bellin College campus
emergency evacuation plans posted throughout the building. During
a fire drill all students and employees are expected to vacate
the building.
The College is equipped with emergency phones and call buttons. There are
emergency phones in the parking lots which can be identified by their blue

emergency call button located in the campus Wellness Center. The College
has a cardiac arrest mobile unit (AED or Automated External Defibrillator)
located at the reception desk in the Atrium.
Campus Safety: This is a shared responsibility between the College and its
campus community members. Security personnel, Kevin Stringer and Andy
Gallenberger, are on campus from 7:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m. For assistance
during regular business hours (8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.) stop by the front desk,
call x6698, or contact the One Stop Shop. Security personnel will be
patrolling the campus throughout the day and are stationed at the reception
desk in the Atrium.
Inclement Weather/Class Cancellations: If the hours of operation of the
College are altered (cancellation of classes, labs, and/or practicum) there will
be an announcement sent to all students via phone call, email, and/or text
message with the details of the delay/closure. These messages will be sent
by the College’s notification system School Messenger. The Bellin College
website and/or local radio and televisions stations will also be notified of
delay/closure. Students are responsible for using personal judgment
regarding their safety and travel to the College during inclement weather. If
the College closes for reasons other than weather, check the website.

practicum, and typically by 1:00 p.m. for evening classes, labs, and clinical
experiences.
Bellin College Hours
General guidelines: Students may enter
the Main Entrance Door on the first floor
or the back doors by using their ID
badges. The College is open to the public
from 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., Monday
through Friday. The Main Entrance Door
will be open during regular business
hours. Students’ ID badge will allow
access before and after regular business
hours. Students are expected to leave the
building by 8:00 p.m.
