NUMBER 6 2, 95 $ Informed Making an Choice convectair.com MAGAZINE 1 tch Wa for nv ns m at co tio ir. mo ta pro ec t tes r la ou co Editorial A little of us, a lot of you... E ven before Convectair sold its first heater, I took part in a home show to exhibit our company’s future products. Convectair was completely unknown back then. I remember how nervous I was, presenting our two new heaters for the very first time. But to my great surprise, far from being resistant to change, countless visitors reacted spontaneously with the words: “Now that’s the future of heating! That’s what will replace our old baseboards.” The year was 1983. convectair.com 2 Recently, one of my associates told me what Convectair symbolizes. “There are two points that define Convectair buyers,” he said. “The first is that they refuse to be satisfied with the ordinary. Beyond efficiency, power and savings, they’re looking for comfort and something different. They like a product that’s solid, sophisticated and high-performance. The second point in common is pride. They take pride in having made the right choice and in having found the little extra that distinguishes them from others: the fact that they’re doing their part today to make the future more comfortable.” Our catalogue has grown considerably since 1983, and our heaters have evolved. But one thing has not changed: the conviction that the only valid measure of our success is the continued satisfaction of the people who use our products. I make no secret of the fact that this principle is not always easy to apply. We must constantly be attentive to their needs and ready to put providing information before selling. This tool has also changed the mission of our customer service department. Now more informed, the customers who call are seeking very specific information, and understand their own heating needs well. Our role is enhanced by their knowledge, and we can better serve a greater number of customers. The website will evolve, however. You’ll find a link on the cover taking you to our latest products and promotions. If you’re an electrical or building professional, we’ve also considered you with a site tailored to your specific needs. At Convectair, we firmly believe in the future of electric heating. But most of all, we know that this future cannot be developed without you. We’ll continue to surpass performance standards even before they are set, as we have done since 1983. In this newest edition of the Convectair Magazine, you’ll find more than 15 different products. Today still, this is how the entire Convectair team continues to introduce you to the future of electric heating. At Convectair, there will always be a little of us, and a lot of you, in every product. Jean Marie Falquet, President and CEO THE WEBSITE For a free analysis of your heating needs, or to find out more about our heaters and our services, visit our website, CONVECTAIR.COM. Allegro18 Halls and landings are the poor cousins of a well-heated house. Installing a Convectair ensures the same comfort level throughout the home. At Convectair, we don’t try to keep up with the latest trends. Instead, every innovation we develop is rigorously tested before we put it on the market. I ncreasing comfort, improving performance, making heaters easier to use—these are the challenges that preoccupy Convectair researchers. And since we go out of our way to stock all the parts needed to repair our heaters long after installation, we don’t make any change unless it is truly relevant. The result? Convectair gives you genuine innovation, the kind that greatly improves your quality of life. 3 convectair.com Every Convectair is designed to meet your needs convectair.com 4 Jazz Diva The towel dryer provides all-around comfort with one single heater, by quickly heating the room and the towels, too. This heater warms by radiant heat and hot-air ventilation, perfect for preventing early-morning shivers. Seeking perfection A mong Convectair’s innovations is the creation of the Allegro in 14, 18 and 26 inches. This natural convection unit comes in three sizes that slip into any space in your home. The discreet, elegant casing makes it an essential model that suits both the smallest and the largest rooms. Compatible with the Programmer, this unit keeps pace with the household schedule, ensuring wise energy consumption with no wastefulness. The Allegro was designed to be practical and easy to use. Simpler controls To make Allegro heaters truly easy to use, we’ve centralized the controls around a digital screen. There are four clearly identified buttons: an On/Off button; a function selector (comfort, economy, frost protection, program); and two buttons, (+) and (–), to raise or lower the temperature. The control screen connects to the Programmer, if installed. The 240V Apéro model also features this new technology, now displaying a digital screen with three buttons: (+) and (-) buttons to adjust the temperature and a 5-mode function selector (comfort, economy, frost protection, heat off, program). The heater can be connected to the Programmer system by means of a pilot wire. The Diva pampers you Restyled in a contemporary spirit, the Diva redefines the notions of luxury and comfort in the bathroom. The heater is still the same size but is now more streamlined and slightly curved. It also comes with three permanent towel bars. Designed specifically for the bathroom, the Diva emits both radiant and fanblown heat. Radiant heat works like the sun’s rays to heat the surfaces, for warmth you can feel. A fan at the bottom of the heater distributes warm air to enhance this heat. The dual functionality means the bathroom can be heated rapidly as need be, for maximum comfort with no wastefulness. Allegro Duo Convectair’s wide variety of formats and capacities allow the heating effort to be shared by several units, for consistent comfort throughout the home. A wide selection C onvectair has developed countless models in different dimensions and capacities, so that you can create a balanced heating system no matter what architectural constraints your building presents. For example, in a sizeable, undivided room that opens to the outdoors, often found at the entrance to a commercial setting, a high-powered heater is needed to offset cold drafts of air. At the opposite end of the spectrum, in a large interior room such as a living room, family room or dining room, it makes sense to have several small heaters share the job. This division of labour offers the double advantage of preventing the overtaxing of a single unit and eliminating cold zones. Never too little or too much To calculate the power needed to heat your home, use the wattage calculator available at convectair.com. Allegro Duo In a waiting room, clients will be patient as long as they are comfortable. A Convectair can ensure that your brand image remains flawless. Allegro14 In an opulent dining room, the heaters must blend into the decor. Our mimetic white finish is ideal to achieve the perfect look. convectair.com 5 A winning choice for life convectair.com 6 Allegro18 Convectair natural convection heaters provide even comfort—in complete silence. E ntirely designed in our laboratories and manufactured in our factories, Convectair’s high-quality heaters and components are the most efficient in their category. Within every convection heater is our X-shaped heating element. This element is made from a surface-treated aluminum alloy that optimizes heat transfer. Thanks to its superior performance, Convectair heaters produce incomparable comfort using minimal energy. The result is unrivalled efficiency and substantial energy savings. Genuine energy savings every year and heaters that are built to last: now that’s a smart choice. Divide—and conquer the cold Easy to program and easy to use, the Programmer gives you the ideal heating for your needs. By installing a Programmer unit, you can link several heaters to follow a single heating schedule. In other words, you can create a schedule based on your use of each room in the home. The bedrooms can be heated at certain times of the day, while the kitchen area, dining room and living room can be kept warm at other times. Opera A lot of windows can cause headaches when it comes time to install a heater. The Opera is a corner unit that radiates heat toward the centre of the room, for ultimate comfort and heat that you can feel. Jazz The Jazz is equipped with three arms that diffuse either warm or room-temperature air, depending on whether you want to simply dry your towels or dry and warm them. The key to savings Visit convectair.com for more information on programming and the Programmer system. We recommend a needs assessment to determine the number of modules you’ll require. 7 convectair.com U nlike a central heating system, which reacts to a lone thermostat and heats the entire home as a single block, the Convectair heating system allows each and every room to be custom heated. Whether you’re a night watchman, baker, bartender or jazz musician, your own heating program can be easily set up, no matter how irregular your schedule. convectair.com 8 Making the right choice Diva Inside every Diva is a double heating core that produces both radiant and forced-air heat. Whether activated by a set program or as need be, this unit heats any room in a flash. A triums and bathrooms often have heated floors. Yet the floor heating system in these rooms still requires back-up heaters to ensure genuine comfort. When placed strategically, Convectair heating units create an ambience of well-being for as long as needed. A must for heater floors Complete comfort Warm towels and instant heat whenever you want it—now that’s the perfect way to end a bath or shower! Multipurpose Convectair towel dryers come in several different combinations, to match your sensitivity to cold and your lifestyle. When paired with a fan, a radiant heater (Diva and Boléro) creates a warm atmosphere that is enhanced by heat as immediate as the sun’s rays. As for the combined convection unit and fan (Samba), it produces a pleasant atmosphere at all times and more heat when you need it. Activating the fan for a few minutes will immediately infuse the room with enveloping warmth. And cold-sensitive souls who frequently move house will appreciate the Jazz 120V, since this unit plugs into a normal wall socket (120V) and can be moved whenever you redecorate or relocate. Jazz Compact and efficient, the Jazz boasts a powerful fan that can heat a bathroom in just minutes. Boléro Hang your robe and towels on a large radiant towel heater to stay warm and relaxed after your bath. 9 convectair.com W hether or not you have a heated floor, you’ll enjoy experiencing the true comfort and peace of mind that come from a radiant towel dryer combined with a powerful fan heater. convectair.com 10 Samba Every morning, standing outside the shower, you’ll appreciate the hot air generated by the Samba, a recessed heater that is powerful yet silent. Depending on the model you choose, our towel dryers can instantly fan-heat a room, give you the palpable warmth of radiant heat, and even warm your towels. For the bathroom, any of several models may be appropriate, depending on the room size and your lifestyle. If the room is large with a separate shower stall and a soaking tub, a radiant heater is the wise choice, since the heat warms like the sun’s rays. If the bathroom is small and used mainly for the morning rush, a fan heater may be enough, since it will warm the room almost instantly. Made to measure Start by noting your habits and preferences, and you’ll receive the best advice about the heating you need. Calypso The control panel safety lid and lint filter make the Calypso the fan heater of choice for family bathrooms. The petite, powerful Piccolo! Our newest fan-forced heater is the Piccolo, a recessed model designed for periodic use (in the bathroom or laundry room, for example) that protrudes only 2 centimetres from the wall. Barely larger than a file folder, it generates heat in two modes at two levels of power. The 750W level responds to high-precision electronic thermostat, while a timer activates the 1500W of heat at the second level (during a maximum of 30 minutes). convectair.com 11 The Piccolo is Programmer-compatible, so it can follow the home heating schedule, reducing energy consumption without disturbing the household’s comfort. The big advantage of this model? In addition to creating a permanently comfortable ambiance, it provides heat on demand without overriding the regular setting. Natural convection, radiant heat and fan-forced heat: the possibilities are endless. T he type of heating chosen for a room depends on the main activities that take place in it. Natural convection heats the ambient air; this type of heating is ideal for bedrooms and for spaces where people tend to get together. Radiant heaters produce direct heat that you can feel, like the sun’s rays. This type is a favourite of anyone who is cold-sensitive. Forced-air heaters are designed to heat quickly and intensely; they’re often installed in entranceways (to blast away incoming cold air), bathrooms and laundry rooms (for rapid heating over a short time). To learn more about the various types of heating, visit convectair.com. Piccolo The Piccolo’s control panel is ultra-simple, for fast and intuitive use. Discreet, efficient and versatile convectair.com 12 Allegro26 Convectairs don’t need to be placed under a window to be effective; placing them on any perpendicular wall does the trick. L arge windows, cathedral ceilings, ample furnishings, too little wall space—Convectair took all these architectural constraints into account when developing its line of heaters. With go-anywhere styling and a wide range of formats, Convectair heaters are made to suit any interior. A definite asset You may have constraints other than spatial, such as a particular building style or decor that you wish to respect. For this reason, Convectair offers a wide range of heaters in white, mimetic white and greige, all of which melt into the interior design. From the simply furnished family room to the sophisticated reception hall, Convectair suits any style or place. Allegro14 Why heat the bedding when you’re trying to heat the bedroom? Convectairs are available in many sizes to overcome any architectural constraint. Here, a compact heater propels hot air toward the centre of the bedroom. Opera A little Opera brings comfort to any spot where space is at a premium—even a staircase. Apéro Discreet and efficient, Convectairs blend into any decor. No more cold zones! W hy turn up the heating in the whole house when it’s your hallway, laundry room or bathroom that’s always chilly? Try heating zone by zone instead! This method requires no changes to your current heating system but adds on to it in targeted areas. Strategically placed Convectairs take over in the zones that a central heating system neglects. And for comfort in the bathroom, there is no need to start the central heating in fall or keep it on in spring. A timer-activated fan heater or a towel dryer is enough to quickly heat the bathroom. Zone heating increases your comfort level surprisingly well and reduces energy consumption. 13 convectair.com S everal models come in a good selection of sizes to suit your different needs. And Convectair heaters do not have to be placed systematically beneath windows; they can be installed along a corner wall, at the end of a counter or even on a dividing wall. These features make Convectairs the most flexible heaters to use and greatly simplify decorating. Renovating? convectair.com 14 Apéro The 120V Apéro plugs directly into a socket. Set up a cosy reading corner, and you’ll always find a good book to read! I f you’re planning major renovations, now is the ideal time to review your heating system. Convectair heaters are easier to install than any other heating system, but you should still draw up a plan before beginning the work. And we promise that you won’t regret your investment! Convectair heaters produce incomparable comfort. Every single one, except the Soprano, is equipped with an ultra-sensitive electronic thermostat that keeps the temperature stable and accurate. When you add the Programmer module, the units follow a heating schedule that is designed to keep pace with the household activities. These intelligent heaters guarantee considerable energy savings every year. Now’s the time to install an intelligent heating system! convectair.com 15 Allegro26 The newest kitchens often have cabinets on all the walls. So Convectair offers small formats that heat powerfully but take up little space. Soprano Does the thought of the bathroom at 6 a.m. make you shiver? The Soprano runs on a timer, heating the room immediately and for only as long as you want. Do the math! O ther heating systems may seem a better deal when it comes to price: baseboard heaters, for example, which must be placed under windows and often end up heating the back of a sofa, without providing any real comfort to the room’s occupants. Convectair heaters, however, come in a wide range of dimensions and capacities, so they can be placed in any space with enough clearance. And with the exception of the Soprano model, every single Convectair heater contains an ultrasensitive thermostat, whose sensor is located at the base of the heater. Since convection starts near the floor, the whole room is heated evenly from the bottom to the top. Finally, Convectairs can be programmed to provide heat according to a program or as need be, when household activities require it. This as-needed usage means no wastefulness and no loss of comfort. Discover all the Convectair advantages at convectair.com. Comfort at a comfortable price! convectair.com 16 Apéro The 240-V Apéro is programmable, but like all the models in the collection, it can meet an unscheduled need—such as a few hours of heat while you work at your desk. C onvectairs are precise and efficient. Except for the Soprano, every heater is equipped with an electronic thermostat that takes readings at 10 cm above the floor. Sensitive to 1/10th of a degree Celsius, this built-in thermostat replaces wall thermostats, maintaining the temperature without fluctuations and without extra heating effort. The heating element ensures natural, gentle convection that functions in complete silence—no creaking or crackling. In other words, you enjoy outstanding performance and increased comfort in absolute silence. Durable, high-performance heaters that guarantee you comfort and savings, year after year? Now that’s a good investment. convectair.com 17 Apéro Natural convection keeps the ambience consistently comfortable between the bedroom and the office. Heating you first! W hy heat at full capacity when no one is home? By lowering the temperature a few degrees during four or more hours, you can enjoy considerable savings. At night, too, take advantage of the fact that lowering the temperature promotes deep, reparative sleep. All Programmer-compatible Convectairs can be programmed by zone to operate on the household schedule. With a custom heating schedule, you can save up to 15% of heating costs, depending on the duration of the temperature drop. Learn all about the Programmer system at convectair.com. Designed for safety Convectair heaters are designed, tested and proven not to overheat. In the event of misuse or accidental overload, an automatic shutdown mechanism kicks in to prevent overheating. Moreover, the louvre slats are gently curved to prevent cuts. The slats are also placed close enough together that fingers and objects cannot be inserted—even children’s little hands. All the casings are angle-free, with rounded corners and edges to prevent injuries and clothing snags. These features make Convectairs safe to install everywhere, including children’s bedrooms and playrooms. Allegro Duo The Allegro Duo operates by a combination of natural convection and radiant heating. A little warmth makes the atmosphere right for business meetings and brainstorming! Designed, manufactured and assembled in our factories convectair.com 18 A ll Convectairs are designed, manufactured, assembled and tested in our factories. Nothing is left to chance. The materials, equipment and mechanisms used for every model are rigorously tested in the Convectair laboratories. As for sustainable development, we use only high-quality materials that are made to last for decades, no matter how harsh the climate. At Convectair, we focus on producing an ultra-reliable product, from design to installation. convectair.com 19 Convectair and its factories have always relied on technological innovation. This investment over the years now gives us access to the best-equipped laboratories in the entire industry. They include a simulation chamber, built like an ordinary dwelling. Inside the walls, the temperature can be lowered to -20°C. Convectair experts can thus check the energy efficiency and the performance of units during prolonged periods of significant use. Flawless assembly A commitment to the brand In Convectair factories, all our assembly line workers are trained to guarantee quality control. And to ensure exceptional quality, a second team supports the work already accomplished by supervising, monitoring and randomly checking the heaters until they have been packed. This group effort contributes to the Convectair philosophy: when a heater leaves the factory, it leaves for good! Since 1983, Convectair has been marketing heaters that are both economical and durable—two qualities that make them ecologically responsible. The energy savings occur year after year, and the heaters do not become obsolete. In fact, almost any unit that has been installed since Convectair was founded can be repaired, if something does break. Should you buy a home that comes with older Convectairs, there’s a good chance that they still work well. If they don’t, they can be easily repaired. For both these reasons, Convectairs contribute genuine added value to any home. Product No 7836 Happily ever after with Convectair! convectair.com 22 H ave you ever heard a salesperson talk about “programmed obsolescence”? Invented to force people to consume, this concept of a limited lifetime for household appliances does not exist at Convectair. In fact, since 1983, we’ve practiced just the opposite. As a responsible business, we’re constantly trying to reduce our environmental footprint. Our heaters have always had an unlimited lifetime. They can be fully repaired if ever something breaks, and when decades of wear finally take their toll, the unit can be taken apart entirely, and several pieces can be recycled. Consuming less for the rest of our lives is the basis of sustainable development. 1 Uniform heat The entire casing has been studied to maximize the chimney effect that is indispensable to efficient convection. The rounded edge of the grille and the air intake and output are all essential for moving the mass of air in a room. 2 Exclusive silent monoblock heating element We design and produce our own elements for each product and each power level. Our heating element is completely silent thanks to the monoblock construction, and its heating power is multiplied by an exclusive surface treatment. Simple, intuitive controls 3 Digital controls, covered by a lockable safety lid (on Allegro and Allegro Duo models), make managing comfort easier. Thermal safety 4 A manual-reset thermal safety mechanism shuts down the unit in case of overheating. Built-in electronic thermostat 5 The ultra-precise electronic thermostat is linked to a thermal sensor located at the bottom of the heater, exactly where the cold enters the room. Together, they ensure constant heat from floor to ceiling, eliminating cold zones ignored by your central heating system. Programmer system 6 All Convectair heaters, with the exception of the Soprano model, are compatible with the Programmer system, for maximum energy savings. New GO BOX® technology 7 The Allegro units are now equipped with a connection box —the GO BOX® technology—that enable them to be quickly, easily and conveniently connected and disconnected. Two-year full warranty against manufacturing defects and five-year warranty on the heating elements. 23 convectair.com Only the best convectair.com 24 Is Convectair in your plans? Finally, the guarantees and after-sales service validate your choice and our commitment always to serve you better. Let’s talk consumption Less is better! An example of programming When it comes to ecology and the economy, the experts all agree: before talking about maximizing or recuperating, genuine savings start with what you don’t use. So why waste thousands of kilowatts heating the furniture while you’re not home or during your sleep? If you know that every weekday morning, the entire family leaves home for school or work, you can program a temperature drop of 4°C for the entire house. Then the normal temperature can be programmed to coincide with the arrival of the first person to come home. When Convectair heaters are linked to the Programmer module, the heating schedule follows the household schedule. At night or when the house is empty, the temperature drops; in rooms where people are active, the temperature rises again. No one notices the drops in temperature, but the electricity bills show the difference—for good. And this reduction in consumption is repeated year after year. If the bedrooms are empty before 8 p.m., a temperature increase can be programmed in a second zone to match the use of these rooms. During the night, the temperature can be lowered again to promote deep sleep for the entire household. Of course, a different schedule can be developed for weekends and for less-used rooms. Also good to know is that you can temporarily override any program to meet a specific heating need. Convectair heaters are designed to guarantee you enjoy optimal comfort, tailored to your needs. convectair.com Our customer service 25 TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS 7392 Programmer Modules 26 INSTALLATION AND CONNECTION For single-heater programming: Install the Convectair unit using a standard 2-conductor cable. 7392 FP: Programmable pilot-wire module.
