Update
Quick Practice
Guides
Our series of guides to
support targeted Medicine
Use Reviews (MURs) is ever
increasing – we now have 32
available to you. New guides
are available this semester,
and the three listed below are
included with this programme;
• Stable Angina
• Hyperlipidaemia
• NOACs (Novel Oral
Anticoagulants)
All previous versions have also
been recently updated and are
available to download from
the home page of our website
(www.wcppe.org.uk).
Streaming
Events
We are continuing to stream
events this semester to provide
an option to those of you who
may not be able to get out to
some of the evening sessions.
The following event is available
via a ‘live’ link to view from
home:
• Parkinson’s Disease
5th May 2015 (page 13)
You can register for these as you
would any other event and we
will contact you approximately
one week before to provide full
instructions and the link to the
live stream.
We are also piloting the Q&A
chat feature so you can ask
questions via the Learning
Facilitators to convey to the
speaker.

Full details on how the process
works is available on our
website. (http://www.wcppe.org.

New Evaluation of Events
WCPPE is constantly reviewing how we manage
our live events to ensure we continue to deliver
the best educational experience within limited
resources.
From April 1st, copies of the main speaker
PowerPoint presentation will only be available
electronically approximately one week before
the event via participants myWCPPE page and
once event registration has been completed.
Any other learning materials, such as case
scenarios, will still be provided as hard copies
at the event. This change will allow us to
re-allocate resources into other areas of
educational design and delivery.
We are currently investigating wider
opportunities for using technology to enhance
your CPD and learning. This will involve a
variety of media and techniques, meaning
that our events and resources become more
accessible than ever. This includes interactive
webinars, regular podcasts that can be
downloaded and listened to whilst ‘on the go’
and the development of richer interactions and
learning opportunities via WCPEE online. New email addresses
In order to provide a more efficient service
when answering queries, we have recently
opened four new email addresses. These
email accounts are monitored regularly
and you can generally expect a response
within 5 working days.
If you have a query regarding the
Accredited Checking Pharmacy
Technicians or Medicines Management
programmes, please email
[email protected]
If your query relates to the Level 2 or 3
NVQ and/or BTEC programmes, please
email [email protected].
If you have a query regarding Advancing
Inhaler Technique, please email
[email protected].
If you are have a query relating to
your myWCPPE account, please email
[email protected].
Return to Practice
Further information can be found on our website (http://www.wcppe.org.uk/learning/return-to-practice).
Staff Update
Cheryl Moore has recently joined WCPPE
as our new Business and Office Manager.
Cheryl brings a wealth of experience in
business, marketing and communications,
which we are confident will enhance the
WCPPE service.

Office Manager, has moved onto pastures

new, and whilst we are very sad to see her
go, we wish her every success in her new
role at The Welsh Blood Service.
Natalie Young has also recently joined
us as an administrator and is settling in
well. Natalie will be supporting the smooth
running of the NVQ centre for the majority
of her time.
Enhanced Services
National Accreditation
Accreditation for enhanced services is via an online
assessment. The accreditation is not health board
specific and covers delivery of these services across
Wales. Accreditation for the Emergency Contraception
and the Substance Misuse enhanced services are valid
for three years.
phone) using a debit or credit card. Once payment is
received and you have completed the assessment it will
be marked (please allow up to 10 working days for this).
The assessment, the “Competency and training
framework” for each service, learning material and
supporting documents can be found on WCPPEonline at
www.wcppe.org.uk. The enhanced services material can
be accessed by clicking on the “Pharmacists” button
on the Home Page and then by clicking on the relevant
enhanced service listed under the “Enhanced Services”
column. The distance learning packs are available either
through the ‘resources’ link or to download or order
online via the red ‘Learning’ tab.
Re-accreditation
Please check whether your health board is running the
service for which you are obtaining accreditation and that
there are no restrictions on the number of pharmacies
that can provide the service locally.
To undertake the assessments you have to be registered
for WCPPEonline.
The fee will cover up to two attempts for one service
assessment.
Currently there is only a requirement to re-accredit
for the Emergency Contraceptive (EC) and the
Substance Misuse enhanced services. From 1st April
2015, the EC enhanced service will be extended to
include the supply of Ulipristal.
All pharmacists wishing to continue to provide the
EC service after the 1st April 2015 will need to have
completed a short e-learning module on Ulipristal and an
updated re-accreditation assessment by the 31st March
2015.
The re-accreditation requirements for other enhanced
services are currently under review and full details will be
available on the WCPPE website shortly.
There is no fee for the re-accreditation assessment.
A fee of £25 is payable for the enhanced service
assessment process and can be paid online (or over the

Failure to cancel your place before midday the day
before the course will result in a £25.00 charge.
This charge is a contribution towards the cost of the
course place.
If WCPPE has to cancel an event, we will attempt to
notify all participants who have booked onto the event,
by telephone or email as well as posting a cancellation
notice on our website. We would therefore advise you to
check our website regularly and ensure that we have your
correct contact details.

Parkinson’s Disease
Overview:
This course is aimed at providing appropriate knowledge and information to complement the forthcoming
national public health campaign for Parkinson’s UK Wales in June.
The evening will focus on current challenges to patients with Parkinson’s not only in managing their
medication but maintaining their wellbeing and ability to carry out day to day activities. Pharmacy
professionals can help maximise this by providing regular support and advice to their patients.

Chronic Heart Failure - Focal Point
Overview:
Chronic heart failure is a disabling condition with a high mortality rate and generally poor prognosis.
Surveys in the UK and elsewhere indicate that 10-20% of very old patients have heart failure and accounts
for 5% of all medical admissions to hospital. Readmission rates are amongst the highest for any common
condition and have been estimated to be as high as 50% over 3 months, half of which, it is estimated,
may be preventable
Effective management of this condition can improve not only quality of life but reduce mortality.
Pharmacy teams are well placed to support this group of patients.

Polypharmacy and prescribing in the frail elderly Learning@Lunch (managed sector focus)
Overview:
Approximately one fifth of the population in Wales is 65 or over and this will continue to rise, with
about 86% of this population taking regular prescribed medicines. Polypharmacy is common and often
problematic in elderly patients.
Implementing the ‘less is more’ theory often makes it possible to stop medicines in elderly patients with
no adverse consequences. A patient centred approach, good communication skills, promoting adherence
and use of appropriate tools all help contribute to improved patient care.
All sessions delivered in conjunction with WCPPE facilitator will require the pharmacy lead for care
of the elderly (or equivalent) to be present in order to support discussions and clarify current policy
within their respective trusts.
Any hospital pharmacy team wishing to run a session in their workplace, please contact Caroline Evans on
029 20876484 / [email protected] to arrange.
Learning outcomes:
Designed for:
After the study event participants will be able to:
Pharmacists and pre-registration trainee pharmacists
from the managed sector and Health Board Prescribing
Advisors. *
• Outline pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic
changes commonly seen in older people and how
physical, mental, behavioural and socioeconomic
factors may affect medicine use.
• Describe the risks posed to older people by
polypharmacy, adverse drug reactions, and
adherence issues and understand how to manage
the risks.
• Understand the role of various means of improving
medication use in older people, including STOPP,
START tools; AWMSG Polypharmacy: “Guidance for
prescribing in frail adults”, for assessing whether
medicines have been inappropriately prescribed or
omitted.
• Recognise medicines that can potentiate falls in the
elderly and the advice to give to these patients.
* This is event is open to all members of the pharmacy
team whose role can influence medicines use, but
please note that the content has been developed
specifically for the above named participants
Speakers:
WCCPE facilitators
Format:
This course will consist of pre-course preparation
followed by active discussion of secondary care based
case studies in the facilitated session, helping you to
learn with your colleagues.
Pre- course Preparation:
Pre-course preparation will be made available to you
two weeks prior to the event which will help update your
therapeutic knowledge to prepare for the case studies at
the event.
It will take approximately an hour to work through.

Overview:
This course supports you to develop your writing skills for a wide range of formats including project
plans, portfolios, reports and papers.
You know about pharmacy, medicine and science but you may not be sure that you always communicate
that knowledge as effectively as possible.
This half-day practical course will give you the confidence that your message not only reaches the
audience you want it to, but that it has the best chance of being read and understood, and that writing is
not necessarily a chore but can be fun.
The numbers for this course are strictly limited to 12 so early booking is advised.

Care of the vulnerable and older people your professional duty
Overview:
The General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC), along with other healthcare regulators, has recently signed
a joint statement on openness and honesty - the professional duty of candour. What does this mean?
Following publication of the Francis report in England; the Andrews (Trusted to Care) report in Wales and
the latest Older People’s Commissioner for Wales –“A Place to Call Home?” the spotlight has been on
patient care and practice.
These events will bring together pharmacy colleagues to discuss how GPhC professional standards are
considered in fitness to practise cases and where our professional duties to patients lie regarding patient
safety and medicines management. The focus will be on the vulnerable and older people and how we can

Advancing Inhaler Technique
Overview:
This course will provide an overview of the skills required to support respiratory patients to maximise the
benefits from their inhaled medication and reduce potential side effects.
Respiratory Health Delivery Plans are now in place within each LHB to specify the care that should be
delivered for anyone affected by a respiratory disease. Effective use of respiratory devices is key to this
patient group.
Following on from the success of similar events delivered by the expert speaker, Jon Bell, WCPPE has
worked with Jon to develop a network of accredited trainers, who can continue to run training events on
Advancing Inhaler Technique (AIT) based on the principles of Jon’s teaching. The sessions will include
descriptions of new inhaler devices.
These events are very ‘hands on’ and for this reason are limited to a maximum of 20 participants.

Clinical Therapeutics and Technical Services, Good
Manufacturing Practice (GMP)
Overview:
Clinical Pharmaceutics and Technical Services within the NHS in Wales ensure specialist pharmaceutical
products are dispensed or produced for some of our most vulnerable patients in settings such as: Cancer
services, ITU, HDU and Neonatal Intensive Care.
Each specialist unit offering these services must comply with the EU rules governing Good Manufacturing
Practice (GMP). The Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) or our Regional
Quality Control unit inspects and audits to these rules and guidance to ensure compliance.
Root cause analysis of significant events affecting patient safety also reminds us of the high risks
involved in the day to day activities undertaken within production and aseptic units. Lessons can be
learned from such events and shared to ensure changes to practice can take place in order to increase
the quality of the products and services we offer to patients.
