Presentation of the Marion Luther
Brittain Service Award
This award, symbolic of all honors bestowed on students
by the University, is an expression of gratitude for service
performed without expectation of reward or recognition. The
award was established at Emory in 1942 through a bequest
from a distinguished Emory alumnus, former President Brittain
of the Georgia Institute of Technology.
Silas W. Allard 11L 11T
Silas W. Allard, a Robert W. Woodruff scholar in
both Candler School of Theology and the School of Law, is the
2011 Brittain Award winner. Allard is a candidate for a master
of theological studies and a juris doctor.
Committed to social justice and international human rights
advocacy and policy, Allard served as the conference cochair
for the sixtieth anniversary of the Universal Declaration of
Human Rights. Through this conference, he led University
efforts in celebrating the progress made by the global community in ensuring that every individual’s rights are fully recognized and respected. Allard has developed a particular interest
in refugee rights and issues of displacement and resettlement,
and interned with the United Nations High Commissioner for
Refugees in Geneva, Switzerland.
Allard was awarded the School of Law’s Outstanding
Commitment to Public Service Award for his work with
Emory’s Public Interest Committee, an organization that provides active support for students who wish to pursue careers in
the public interest. He also serves as the editor of the Emory
International Law Review.
In 2009, Allard was named a 100 Community Builder
through the We Are Emory Campaign.
Allard received his bachelor of arts in religious studies with a
minor in German from the University of Missouri.
Presentation of the
University Scholar/Teacher Award
Chosen by the University president from nominations by the
deans on behalf of the United Methodist Church Board of
Higher Education and Ministry.
David Gilbert Lynn
Asa Griggs Candler Professor of Chemistry and Biology
Professor Lynn is a scholar, a teacher, a curricular
innovator, and a campus leader. He earned a BA from the
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in chemistry and
a PhD from Duke University in organic/biological chemistry.
His research focuses on the origins and evolution of life and
involves interdisciplinary work through collaborations with
colleagues in the Department of Physics and the School of
Medicine, among others. Professor Lynn has also worked
with Emory’s Neurodegenerative Disease Center to study
Alzheimer’s disease.
As one of twenty inaugural Hughes Professors selected in
2002 to receive the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI)
award, Lynn received one million dollars to translate his
passion for science to the undergraduate classroom. This award
enabled Professor Lynn to create an innovative and successful
freshman seminar program called On Recent Discoveries by
Emory Researchers (ORDER). ORDER engages freshmen
together with graduate students to examine the scientific
method from diverse perspectives and with a broad range of
research questions.
Lynn is recognized for his contributions to the field of
chemical biology, particularly in plant chemical biology,
dynamic molecular self-assembly, chemical evolution, and
chemical education. His publications include more than 150
publications in areas of physical organic chemistry, synthetic
chemistry, biophysical chemistry, microbiology, plant biology,
molecular biology, lateral gene transfer, and pathogenesis.
In 2006 he was appointed chair of the Department of
Chemistry and in 2010 a fellow of the American Association
for the Advancement of Science. Professor Lynn has also
pioneered collaboration between the natural sciences and
the performing arts, through his contributions to the 2009
Evolution Revolution Symposium and his ongoing work with
the Emory College Center for Creativity and Arts to bring a
better understanding of science to the public through art.
Presentation of the Thomas Jefferson Award
Awarded each year to a faculty member or administrative
officer for significant service to the University through personal
activities, influence, and leadership.
Dennis C. Liotta
Samuel Dobbs Candler Professor of Chemistry
As a scholar, teacher, mentor, researcher, and advocate,
Dennis Liotta has served in many leadership capacities while
at Emory and has made remarkable scientific and educational
accomplishments. Educated at Queens College (BA) and the
University of New York (PhD), he is committed to resolving
complex global issues and fostering Emory as a university
that is forward thinking, ethically engaged, and working
collaboratively for positive transformation in the world.
Professor Liotta is a pioneer of ground-breaking drug
therapies. His research has focused on the discovery and
development of pharmaceuticals, and he led the Emory team
that developed the breakthrough antiviral drug approved for
the treatment of HIV in 2003, FTC (Emtriva). He helped found
the company iThemba (translated as “hope”) Pharmaceuticals
in South Africa and currently serves as chair of its scientific
advisory board. The goal of the organization is to develop
medicines and therapies that are accessible and meet the health
care needs of sub-Saharan Africans. Liotta launched this
project focused on the treatment of infectious diseases such as
tuberculosis, malaria, and HIV/AIDS, in South Africa.
During the course of his career at Emory, Professor Liotta
has authored more than two hundred research publications,
holds more than sixty patents, and has lectured at more than
two hundred events. His work with students has earned him
the Emory Williams Distinguished Teaching Award in the
Natural Sciences and the Emory University Distinguished
Faculty Lecturer Award. He is the recipient of many prestigious
fellowships and awards, including the Alfred P. Sloan
Foundation, the Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation, and
the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. He is a fellow of
the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the
American Chemical Society, and the International Society for
Antiviral Research. In 2010, he was inducted into the American
Chemical Society Medicinal Chemistry Hall of Fame.

The conferring of degrees is authorized in formal session by the
Board of Trustees of Emory University on the recommendation of the president and the faculties. At today’s ceremony,

Gardner-Monks Professor of Child Psychiatry

Physician, Researcher, Mental Health Advocate
Doctor of Science, honoris causa
William R. Beardslee is director of the Baer Prevention
Initiatives, chairman emeritus of the Department of Psychiatry
at Children’s Hospital in Boston, and Gardner-Monks Professor
of Child Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School.
He received a BA from Haverford College and an MD from
Case Western Reserve University. He trained in general psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital and in child psychiatry
and psychiatric research at Children’s Hospital. His research
focus is on the protective effects of self-understanding in
enabling youngsters and adults to cope with adversity, and he
has studied self-understanding in civil rights workers, survivors
of cancer, and children of parents with affective disorders.
Beardslee has directed the Preventive Intervention Project, a
ten-year study of response to public health preventive interventions for families facing depression. He has received numerous awards including the Agnes Purcell McGavin Award for
Prevention of Mental Disorder in Children from the American
Psychiatric Association and the Human Rights Award from the
Massachusetts Department of Mental Health.
Beardslee serves on the Carter Center Task Force on
Mental Health and the board of Mental Health America. He
is the author of more than 175 articles and chapters and two
books: The Way Out Must Lead In: Life Histories in the Civil
Rights Movement, a story of what enables civil rights workers to endure; and Out of the Darkened Room: Protecting
the Children and Strengthening the Family When a Parent Is
Depressed, a book about how parents and caregivers can help
families overcome depression. He has collaborated with Emory
faculty in his research, and his father, William A. Beardslee,
was a longtime religion professor at Emory.

Martha Nussbaum
Ernst Freund Distinguished Service Professor of Law
and Ethics, University of Chicago
Scholar, Teacher, Philosopher
Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa
Martha Nussbaum is a contemporary philosopher and
public scholar who gained renown with her first major book,
The Fragility of Goodness: Luck and Ethics in Greek Tragedy
and Philosophy, which addresses questions about the meaning and vulnerability of life and luck. She also has contributed
important scholarship in the areas of feminism, international
policy, global justice, animal rights, and the humanities. Her
other books include Cultivating Humanity: A Classic Defense
of Reform in Liberal Education; Liberty of Conscience:
In Defense of America’s Tradition of Religious Equality;
Hiding from Humanity: Disgust, Shame, and the Law;
and From Disgust to Humanity: Sexual Orientation and
Constitutional Law.
Nussbaum received a BA from New York University and
an MA and PhD from Harvard University. She has taught
at Harvard, Brown, and Oxford Universities. From 1986 to
1993, Nussbaum was a research adviser at the World Institute
for Development Economics Research, Helsinki, a part of the
United Nations University. She has chaired the Committee on
International Cooperation and the Committee on the Status
of Women of the American Philosophical Association, and
currently chairs its new Committee for Public Philosophy. She
has been a member of the Association’s National Board. In
1999–2000 she was one of the three presidents of the association, delivering the presidential address in the Central Division.
She received the Grawemeyer Award in Education in 2002, the
Barnard College Medal of Distinction in 2003, the Radcliffe
Alumnae Recognition Award in 2007, and the Centennial
Medal of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at Harvard
University in 2010.

George Trakas
Landscape Artist
Sculptor, Environmentalist, Redeemer of Places through Art
Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa
George Trakas is an internationally recognized
sculptor and environmental artist. A native of Quebec, Canada,
Trakas is among the leading artists of his generation working in the landscape. After beginning his studies at Sir George
Williams University Montreal, he moved to New York City,
where he studied and received a bachelor of science degree
from New York University.
Recognized as a major figure in the environmental art movement, Trakas prefers to work with communities and in the
public realm; his installations and interventions in towns and
cities, parks and waterfronts, have served during many years to
bring to life and draw attention to the beauty of natural sites
that were endangered or blighted.
Trakas has explored two constant themes in his art: water
and paths; his installations typically incorporate a functional
response to a particular site or environment. His work reflects
a respect for materials, nature, the existing properties of the
site, the traditions of the community, and the needs of the
individual user of the site. Recent major works include Beacon
Point along the Hudson River in Beacon, New York; Quai des
Trois Dents in Parc du Pilat in Loire, France; and Waterfront
Nature Walk in Brooklyn, New York.
In much of his work, Trakas recycles local materials and
incorporates them into the finished site, providing a strong
sense of the character of the original place. Source Route is
the Emory work that Trakas created in 1979, in the Woolford
B. Baker Woodland behind the Michael C. Carlos Museum,
on the occasion of the symposium commemorating the fiftieth
anniversary of the Phi Beta Kappa chapter at the University.
He called it Source Route because he saw it as a place where
things began. Often, as in the case of Source Route, his sculptures have led to an increased awareness of the value of connections between the natural and the built environment. Trakas
spent a week on the Emory campus in April this year to revisit
this work with students and faculty.

Janet Napolitano
United States Secretary of Homeland Security
Public Servant, Lawyer, Leader
Doctor of Laws, honoris causa
Janet Napolitano is the third secretary of the
Department of Homeland Security and is leading efforts to
counter the threat of terrorism and respond to natural disasters. To secure the United States against terrorism, Napolitano
has forged new partnerships with international allies and
expanded information sharing with federal, state, and local
law enforcement. She has also initiated a more strategic course
to strengthen security along the southwest border and combat
violent international drug cartels. To prepare for, respond to,
and recover from natural disasters, Napolitano has led the
department in providing new resources to build resilient communities and bolster their response capabilities.
In each of these areas Napolitano is using new science and
technology, reinvigorating partnerships with state and local
governments and the private sector, and implementing an efficiency review to better equip the Department of Homeland
Security. Prior to becoming secretary, Napolitano was in her
second term as governor of Arizona. She was the first woman
to chair the National Governors Association and was named
one of the top five governors in the country by Time maga-
zine. Napolitano also was the first female attorney general of
Arizona and served as US attorney for the District of Arizona.
Born in New York City, Napolitano grew up in Pittsburgh
and Albuquerque. She is a graduate of Santa Clara University,
where she won a Truman Scholarship and was the university’s
first female valedictorian. She received a juris doctor degree
from the University of Virginia School of Law.

Severe Weather
Should weather conditions improve sufficiently, the college and
the schools of law, nursing, and public health might wish to
proceed with their outdoor diploma ceremonies. The deans
will make this decision. During outdoor ceremonies, if weather
conditions deteriorate and become unsafe, the ceremonies will
be abbreviated. Ushers and safety marshals will direct guests to
exits and safe shelter. Students will be informed about where
and how to obtain their diplomas.
If severe weather forces the cancellation of the all-schools

A Commentary on Commencement
Emory College of Arts and Sciences originated from
a concern for higher education in a Christian setting on the part
of the Georgia Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church.
Chartered in 1836 in Oxford, Georgia, the college was named
after John Emory (1789–1835), bishop of the Methodist Episcopal
Church. In 1964 the college at Oxford was named Oxford College
of Emory University.
Emory College became Emory University by virtue of a charter
granted by the Superior Court of DeKalb County on January 25,
1915. Although classes on the Atlanta campus were begun in the
schools of law and theology as early as 1916, the college did not
move to Atlanta until 1919. The University now includes nine
schools, most tracing their origins to years before the chartering of
the University itself. These schools are Emory College and Oxford
College (1836), the School of Medicine (1854), Nell Hodgson
Woodruff School of Nursing (1905), Candler School of Theology
(1914), the School of Law (1916), Roberto C. Goizueta Business
School (1919), the James T. Laney School of Graduate Studies
(1919), and Rollins School of Public Health (1990).
The intent of the founders is perpetuated by the University’s
vision statement: A destination university internationally recognized as an inquiry-driven, ethically engaged, and diverse community, whose members work collaboratively for positive transformation in the world through courageous leadership in teaching,
research, scholarship, health care, and social action.
A Short History on Commencement at Emory
This is Emory’s 166th commencement. The exercises witnessed
today represent an imposition of medieval academic tradition on
an institution that had its roots in the nineteenth-century frontier.
The first Emory commencement was held in 1840, four years after
Emory College had been chartered and two years after the college’s
first classes. That first ceremony, however, was without graduating
students, as there were no graduates until the following year. Then,
as now, sermons and addresses had a central focus in the exercises,
though rarely have these addresses been so crucial as in 1849,
when all fifteen members of the graduating class were assigned
speaking places and spoke for as long as half an hour each.
Early commencement audiences sat for up to four hours in the
midsummer heat to listen to the numerous student and faculty
orations on such topics as “Our Government Unfavorable to
High Attainment in Literature,” “Social Equality,” and “Modern
Refinements.” These addresses in the early days were in English,
contrary to the practice at many other institutions. As President A.
B. Longstreet argued in 1842, speeches in Latin and Greek were
“worthy of the name pedantry, and nothing more.” In spite of this
advice, several later generations of students instructed their audiences in the ancient tongues.
Academic Dress and Customs
Academic dress goes back to the founding of European universities, which were the products of the intellectual revival of the
twelfth century. All medieval students were clerks and consequently wore the dress of clergy. This is the academic costume we wear
today, with certain changes introduced in the sixteenth century by
Protestant reformers. The oldest articles of academic wear were
the robe, over which was worn the habit, usually a kind of tunic
with short, wide sleeves. The medieval hood was lined with fur
or inexpensive skins and could be gathered around the neck or
pulled up on the head as a turban. There were four kinds of caps:
the round cap, reserved for doctoral dignity; the tena, a round cap
with strings tied under the chin, worn by jurists; the square cap;
and the Tudor bonnet. At Oxford University in 1565 the square
cap became the norm, but the faculties that had become laicized
adopted the Tudor bonnet. This is still worn by doctors of law,
medicine, and music. It is uncertain when different colors became
associated with different degrees.
The basic design of all academic costume in the United States
was first established in 1895 and was first used at Emory by the
Class of 1902. The bachelor’s gown is without ornamentation
and has long, pointed, open sleeves. The master’s gown has longer
sleeves, which are closed at the bottom with openings about midway for the hands. The doctor’s gown has full-length lapels
of velvet and bell-shaped sleeves with three horizontal velvet bars.
Tassels for bachelors and masters are black; tassels of gold thread
may be worn by doctors. Gowns and caps are usually black,
although Emory and some other schools have specified that
their doctors may wear gowns of distinctive colors. Yale’s deep
blue doctoral gown, Harvard’s crimson, Columbia’s dark blue,
and Emory’s blue and gold are a few that may be seen in
the procession.
The hood varies for the respective degrees, the doctor’s
hood being longer and fuller than the others. The field of
study can be determined from the velvet facing on the hood
according to the following color scheme: white, the arts; goldyellow, science; purple, law; apricot, nursing; green, medicine;
scarlet, theology; salmon, public health; and dark blue, doctors of
philosophy.
The hood is lined with silk in the colors of the degree-granting
institution. For Emory graduates the lining is blue with a chevron
of gold.
The president of Emory University wears a badge of office
given to the University in 1965 by the Emory chapter, Gamma
of Georgia, of Phi Beta Kappa. Designed by Eric Clements of
Birmingham, England, and executed by the Worshipful Company
of Goldsmiths in London, the solid gold badge is an open teardrop
enclosing the raised seal of the University and is suspended on a
gold chain.
A Commentary on Commencement
The chief marshal and fourteen deputy marshals lead the
academic procession. The faculty marshals and the secretary
of the University jointly manage the forming of the procession, the
seating of commencement participants, and the planning of other
aspects of commencement exercises. Marshals are identified by
their unique blue tunics, which are sleeveless and lined with gold.
The Quadrangle stage with blue canopy was named the
University Marshals’ Stage in honor of the dedication and service
provided by Emory’s chief marshals throughout history.
The University mace is carried in the procession by the immediate past president of the Student Government Association.
Academically the mace is the symbol of a university as a corporate
body of scholars possessing its own jurisdiction and its own legally
constituted authority. Traditionally the mace is borne in procession
immediately before the chief officer of a university and is placed
before him or her during formal academic ceremonies.
The mace of Emory University, a gift from D.V.S., an Emory
College senior honor society, was designed by Eric Clements
and executed in silver and gold by the Worshipful Company of
Goldsmiths. In the teardrop at the apex of the mace, against a
background of oxidized silver, is a freestanding representation in
gold of a human skeleton. This is Dooley, the “spirit” of Emory,
who traditionally “rises” once each fall and for a week rules
campus. Immediately below the skeleton, in an open teardrop, is
a gold sphere divided (by stippling) into eight segments. Topping
the sphere is a simple cross, symbolizing the relationship of Emory
University to the Methodist church. The seal of the University is
sculptured in gold within the circular base.
Before each school in the procession, the school’s student marshal carries its gonfalon, a banner in the color associated with the
respective school’s degree: medicine, green; public health, salmon;
nursing, apricot; theology, scarlet; law, purple; and business,
khaki. The gonfalon of the graduate school is gold representing
the Emory’s gold, and the gonfalons of Emory College and Oxford
College represent Emory’s blue.
Emory Alumni Legacy Medallion
Graduating students who have a parent, grandparent, and/or
sibling who is also an Emory graduate are wearing specially commissioned medallions hanging from blue and gold ribbons. The
medallions are expressions of the University’s gratitude to those
families who have chosen to continue the Emory education tradition throughout the generations.
The Commencement Setting
Spectators on the Quadrangle are seated facing Pitts Theology
Library, one of the two oldest buildings on the Atlanta campus. Designed by the distinguished Pittsburgh architect Henry
Hornbostel (1867–1961), Pitts Theology Library was the original
theology building in 1916. It was renovated in 1975 by architect
Paul Rudolph to house the expanded library collection of Candler
School of Theology.
Directly behind the spectators are Carlos Hall, the other original
campus building, and the expanded Michael C. Carlos Museum.
Formerly home to the School of Law, Carlos Hall was renovated
in 1986 according to a design by Michael Graves to house the
museum and the Department of Art History. The museum is
named for the philanthropist who donated most of the cost of
the facility. It was designed to maintain the classic symmetry and
proportion of the surrounding buildings, which are listed on the
National Register of Historic Places.
Bowden Hall, east of the museum, was constructed in 1951
in the same style as the original campus buildings. Originally
the History Building, it was renamed in 1991 in honor of the
late Henry L. Bowden, former chair of the Board of Trustees of
Emory University. To the southeast of Bowden Hall is the Center
for Library and Information Resources. The center joins the tall,
red-tile-crowned Robert W. Woodruff Library and is linked to
the Asa Griggs Candler Memorial Library at the east end of the
Quadrangle. Candler Library was dedicated in 1926 in honor of
the man who donated the land for the campus and who provided
the University with strong leadership in its early years.
Next to Pitts Library is the Loula Walker and Ely Reeves
Callaway Sr. Memorial Center. Thanks to a generous gift from
alumnus Ely R. Callaway Jr. in honor of his parents, this center
joins the former Humanities Building with the original Physics
Building, which was constructed in 1919.
At the west end of the Quadrangle is the Administration
Building (1955), a gift of Charles Howard Candler. Like his
father, Asa, Charles chaired the Board of Trustees for many years.
Between the Administration Building and Pitts Library sits the
more modern White Hall, the main classroom building of Emory
College. Above the trees of the north side of the Quadrangle are
the curved red roof of the William R. Cannon Chapel—designed
by Paul Rudolph and dedicated in 1981—and the towers of Emory
University Hospital to the east.
It was just another Saturday, December 10, 1836: Texas adopted a flag;
a Trappist brewery opened in Belgium; Ralph Waldo Emerson paid off a
debt. And Methodists in Georgia received a charter for a college. Launching
an educational enterprise ranks as a pretty good day’s work. Nearly 175
years on, the aspirations of Emory’s founders have brought astonishing
transformations. During 2011, Emory’s 175th anniversary year, we celebrate
this legacy and its impact.
