THE FLIGHT LINE
Donna Klein, chairman
Well, this is the last "Flight Line from Donna Klein". It has been my pleasure and honor to
serve as your Chairman for the past two years. I've tried to keep the Chapter moving along,
but I haven't accomplished all that I had hoped to. A few items on my bucket list include:
working on a mentoring program for our newer Members, updating our new Member packet
and planning a New Member Reception in the fall.
There are so many of you who contribute to our success. I am going to attempt to thank you
individually (in no particular order); please forgive me if I leave anyone out.

We are very proud of Joan Kerwin, who will receive the Award of Achievement during the
99s International Conference in Germany in July. Over the years, she has contributed so
much to the 99s on every level, and we are happy that she is being recognized for that.
Congratulations, Joan!

The Illinois Aviation Hall of Fame ceremony last month honored Beverlee Greenhill, who
passed away last summer. We are proud of her and all of her accomplishments, and we
miss her.
Sadly, we recently lost another dear Member, Mary Panczyszyn. She was our Membership
Chairman for a long time and always volunteered to help out whenever needed. Mary was
never without a big smile on her face. We'll miss her.
Congratulations to the new Board Members. They will be installed during the June meeting
at the Schaumburg Airport on Father's Day. Join us for a wonderful pancake breakfast.
Mary Lou Erikson and several other Members will be staffing our 99s booth. I hope you will
come and celebrate with us.

CHICAGO AREA CHAPTER 99s MEETING MINUTES
May 9, 2015
Illinois Aviation Academy, DuPage Airport, West Chicago, Illinois
Submitted by Jill Feldman, Secretary Pro Tem
Call to Order 11:20 am by Donna Klein. 9 members present: Donna Klein (Chairman), Joan Kerwin, (Vice Chair), Cynthia Madsen (Air News Editor), Jill Feldman
(Acting Secretary), Leslie Prellwitz, Diane Cozzi, Ellen O’Hara, Rita Adams, Mary Lou Erikson.
Welcome / Introductions – Introduced ourselves to our Guest Speaker, Mary Jane Nelson
Secretary’s Report- Presented by D. Klein in the absence of Jill Mann. Accepted last meeting minutes as published.
Treasurer’s Report – Presented by D. Klein in absence of M. Monaco. Decision made by those present to defer budget discussion to Planning Meeting.
Planning Meeting with current officers to be held on Monday June 15th, 6:30 pm, at Schaumburg airport. Meeting and room to be arranged by D. Klein.
Agenda: Discuss Budget & “Sprucing Up the Chapter” Award.
Committee Business/Reports
Membership - Ruth Frantz/Jill Feldman – 90 total CAC members. One member previously on stand-by has been reinstated. General membership discussion.
Ruth called into meeting to report on elections via telephone. 11 ballots received plus one email ballot (which has been accepted). All nominees accepted on all
ballots (with one exception – no vote)
Election Results
Chairman – Ellen O’Hara
Vice Chair – Leslie Prellwitz
Secretary - Jill Feldman
Treasurer – Madeleine Monaco
Nominating Committee – Donna Klein, Mary Lou Erikson, Sharon Schorsch
R. Adams motioned for ballots to be destroyed, J. Kerwin accepted. All in favor.
Girl Scout Aviation Badge Day – Ellen O’Hara
Postponing May date to September/October due to low Girl Scout attendance (<40 signed up).
Discussion of planning and what caused the low attendance. Recommendations for further discussion:
Change name to Aviation Day (vs. GS Aviation Day) – could invite Boy Scouts, and is higher in the alphabetical list of scout activities.
Minimum attendance of 90 scouts to hold event – has to be reached by one month before event date or event may be cancelled or postponed
Aim for rescheduled date of October 3rd (gives time for scouts to get back to school from summer break)
Air Marking – Ellen O’Hara
Monmouth contact for event is Donavan Godville. Discussion – not enough interest from chapter members to move forward on event. L. Prellwitz will ask Clow
airport about adding a Compass Rose. Since Clow going through a new runway addition, could they add an asphalt area for a compass rose.
Unfinished / Continuing Business
Mentoring Update
Discussion on planning a new member meeting. Suggested setting up at Pilot Pete’s in the Fall.
Chapter Rejuvenation – no new discussion
Flight Planner Update (socialflight.com) – Update per J. Feldman - May and June meetings added. Will add next few meetings.
New Business
NCS Report – C. Madsen wrote detailed article about the meeting and submitted in May newsletter.
Discussion that the primary issues were low membership and aging membership – these issues are universal across the NCS region.
Reminder – NCS is hosting the International 99s Conference in 2019. First decision is which city/chapter is hosting. Chicago Area is not putting in bid to host.
Greg Erikson won a 49-1/2 award at the meeting
International Conference; Credentials, Standing Rule Change
Attendees from CAC will be Kerwin, Adams, Prellwitz and Herring
CAC will get 19 votes for the election. Need to vote for two Directors – one vote will be for L. Prellwitz. Chapter needs to decide on who will receive our second
vote.
Standing Rule Change – The current $10 initiation fee and new student pilot member fee is being eliminated. CAC ratified this change to the standing rule.
Nepal Disaster
Chapter members heard from Sabina Shrestha, a 99 in Nepal. She has asked for financial donations. See additional information in the Air News (from C. Madsen) on
how to donate if interested.

EARTHQUAK E D EVASTATES NEP AL
Sabina Shrestha of our Nepal Section has been updating us regularly
regarding the aftermath of the earthquakes and reports that all our
99s there are safe; however, some have lost family members.
Chicago Area members met Sabina for lunch on March 31st last year
when she was in Chicago for training (see April, 2014 Air News for
details). If you would like to donate for earthquake relief as a private
individual (not as a 99), please contact Donna Klein or Cynthia
Madsen who can forward to you emails with donation information.
Excerpts from Sabina’s messages:
M a y 1 2 : We have earthquake again with 7.3 magnitude.
We all 99s are safe. Day before yesterday we 99s distributed
food, blankets and tent in
Shivapuri area which is north
of Kathmandu
M a y 9 : I have been getting
email from ninety-nine
headquarters for my renewal.
We would be grateful if our
membership would be
renewed, we have few new members too so if it would be
possible to find sponsors for them.
I will update you regarding our on going relief here. Tomorrow we are going to
small village which is at north of Kathmandu called shivapuri. We will be
distributing rice, cereal, blankets ,soaps. We have already distributed some other
places too ie Manakamana which is 100
km west of Kathmandu,Nagarkot which
is of east Bhaktapur and send some
relief to Dhading and sindupalchok
which highly effected area.
M a y 1 : As we are collecting and
distributing the stuffs that can fulfill the
basic needs of the earthquake victims,
we would like to request you all to show
your kindness by helping us. As your
small support can be a big deal for us
and for those victims who will be benefited by your support. Due to lot of tax and
customs problem here we request you to send fund which is easier and faster way
to reach. Its better if we buy stuff here in Nepal. I will send swift code by

Special Guest Speaker at Our May
Chapter Meeting was Mary Jane Dwyer
Nelson, born in 1926. She remembers
looking up in the sky as a young child,
thinking about the clouds and how she
wanted to be in the sky. She started
flying in 1943 when a 16-year old junior in

high school. Her parents and siblings
Nelson, Joan Kerwin, Jill
never shared her interest in flying. She
worked for a Chicago telephone company F e l d m a n a n d C y n t h i a M a d s e n
that loaned her money to buy the
Stearman and called her their “Telepilot” in news articles. The Stearman was a
Navy trainer purchased with two other pilots she eventually bought out; she
painted “CAVU” on the fuselage. Spins and acrobatics were her favorite and
she never liked just flying from A to B. Her husband bought her a flight with Air
Combat USA for her 70th birthday and she won her dogfight against a young
man flying the other plane. On her victory lap, she did loops and spins.
