WELCOME TO THE WAMiS
WELCOME TO THE 2009 WAMi FESTIVAL GUIDE, PRESENTED BY ECU AND X-PRESS MAGAZINE.
THIS IS YOUR HANDY REFERENCE TO WHAT’S SHAKIN’ OVER THE WAMi FESTIVAL, MAY 6-10, 2009.
Each year, WA celebrates local, original, contemporary music with the WAMi Festival. Our favourite acts are showcased through
gigs and the Kiss My WAMi compilation CD; honoured through the WAMi Awards; and the young bloods get a big opportunity
to gig their hearts out to new audiences. Also recognised are the music industry players, media and organisations that help to
drive and expand the great local music scene.
Within and outside of our state borders, Western Australia is very much recognised as a hive of musical talent and
activity, and the 2009 WAMi Festival gives you the opportunity to play a part in this great scene in so many different ways.
The new five-day format sure packs a punch, and gives you the chance to catch a whopping 120 acts over 20 venues
in the metropolitan area. Key events such as the City Of Perth Northbridge Saturday Spectacular and the WAMi Music Business
Conference are shaping up to be the best ever. For those of you who are keen to roll up a swag and head for the country, the
WAMi Festival continues on to May 23 with great gigs in the mid-west, south-west and wheatbelt regions.
In addition to the much-loved showcases, the WAMi Festival will also be taking the contemporary music experience
out of the traditional venues and into different mediums such as photography, installation and fashion. These programs truly
reveal the amazing influence that contemporary music has on many facets of our lives and introduces us to emerging and
established Western Australian creative talent.
While we are talking ‘new events’, be sure to check out the Too Solid Indigenous Awards, which debut this year.
I encourage you to take a good look through the WAMi Festival Guide and start planning your WAMi Festival experience now.
See you there!

LOVE IS MY VELOCITY
THE WAMiS
LOVE IS MY VELOCITY KEY TERMS
Love is My Velocity is launching the LIMV Cookbook II in May. For the occasion, we are hosting three events as part of the
2009 WAMi Festival - the LIMV Cookbook II launch and exhibition, the Bank Notes recording studio, and a series of band-artist
Windows On William displays. What are all these things? It’s hard to explain. Please refer to the definitions below.
LOVE IS MY VELOCITY
Currently acts as a record label, publisher and developer of creative multi-disciplinary events. Its four directors have launched
five split 7” vinyl singles, two full-length CDs, and two art publications over the past few years, as well as putting on numerous
cross-platform gigs around town.
THE LOVE IS MY VELOCITY COOKBOOK II
Is LIMV’s second attempt at gathering emerging Perth artists and musicians into an interactive biannual 60-page almanac of
local creativity. A selection of musicians contributes recipes, which, along with their music, inspires artists to create a dynamic
work decorating the back of each A5 recipe card. The Cookbook’s unbound format makes it unique - it can act as a regular
cookbook or as a selection of prints to hang on your wall.
The Love Is My Velocity Cookbook Launch and Exhibition are a part of the 2009 WAMi Festival.
THE COOKBOOK II EXHIBITION
Is filled with the original drawings, paintings, photographs, sculptures, installations, videos, assemblages and textiles created
for the Cookbook II. More than 60 works will be on display and available to purchase from May 9-20 in 214 William Street (the
Old Bank). Gallery opens 10am-4pm weekdays, and 12pm-4pm weekends.
THE COOKBOOK II LAUNCH
On May 8, Abbe May, The Tigers, 6s And 7s, and The Bank Holidays help launch Cookbook II from 8pm at the Hellenic
Centre, 20 Parker Street Northbridge (opposite Russell Square). Also on show - an interactive performance involving multiple
breadmakers, local bands, and artists The Inter Collective.

BANK NOTES
An ad hoc studio set up to facilitate fast, rough, and
immediately distributable tracks from some of our favourite
bands and musicians - 6s And 7s, 7 Weapons, Abbe May,
Astral Travel, Boys Boys Boys!, Carbuncle, Extortion, The
Sabretooth Tigers, When The Sky Fell, and Wind Waker.
Engineered by veteran Perth soundman Laurie
Sinagra, Bank Notes takes place at 214 William Street, a
disused bank building, on May 6, 7 and 8. The recordings will
be live with a minimum of second takes, and will be mastered
and uploaded to www.loveismyvelocity.com/banknotes
immediately for free public download.
What’s more, you can see it unfold in person. The
door to the bank will be open to the public to allow small
groups to enter and see the bands at work – so long as they
stay quiet and don’t break anything.
Session times run noon to 7pm, Wednesday May 6,
10am to 5pm, Thursday May 7, 10am to 3pm, Friday May 8

WHERE: THROUGHOUT NORTHBRIDGE SHOP WINDOWS
William Street, Northbridge, comes alive this May in celebration of WA’s local music industry, with shopfronts housing audio
and visual treats from some of Perth’s finest creatives.
The third annual Windows On William shines a light on Western Australian musicians, with local artists and musos
teaming up to create installation artworks, mix cds, and a series of collectable recipe cards. Punters are invited to follow the
map to each location to uncover dynamic artworks within shop windows. Step inside to listen to the sounds that inspired the
art, check out editions of artworks and objects, and collect the limited edition recipe card.
“Not only will you discover some of Perth’s most exciting creative talent, you may also stumble across galleries,
venues and shops you never knew existed,” says Love Is My Velocity’s Windows curator Katie Lenanton.
The event coincides with the release of the Love Is My Velocity Cookbook II, a second volume of loose leaf recipe
cards that double as art prints. 52 local bands have provided recipes that have inspired new works by 60 artists. Collect your
bonus Windows On William recipe cards, available exclusively throughout the duration of the event.
Friday, May 8, marks the official Windows On William WAMi Festival Edition opening with a street-wide party from
6-9pm. The event stretches along William Street from the Wellington Street Bus Station to Brisbane Street. Maps and more
details can be found at www.OnWilliam.com.au(.) Creating the shop window collaborations are Abbe May and Jessie Mitchell,

MUSIC INDUSTRY REUNION NIGHT
WEDNESDAY MAY 6 2009 METRO CITY
2009 WAMi FESTIVAL
REGIONAL TOURS & EVENTS: MAY 12-23, 2009
A NIGHT TO REMEMBER AS PART OF THE 2009 WAMi FESTIVAL CALENDAR.
“Hey, we should catch up some time...”
We’ve all heard that somewhere before!
Well, it’s been a long, lonely time coming and finally, a night is happening where the industry can get together and show their
camaraderie. WA music has come a long way over the past 40 years, producing many bands and artists that have dominated
our national charts and left our shores for bigger and better things. Perth has become more than a scene, it’s an industry being
closely followed and taken seriously by national and international players. The Music Industry Reunion Club will be launched on
Wednesday, May 6, at Metro City, and the industry at large is welcome to join.
The club will become many things, from a social club for catch-ups to a support group in the further development of
the music industry. One feature will be an ongoing contribution to Support Act Ltd, Australia’s music industry benevolent fund.
The Wednesday, May 6, launch will see performances by The Stems, Dave Warner from The Suburbs (who also hosts),
Del Roio Brothers (The Boys), V-Capri, Saracen, Kim Salmon & James Baker, Guitar Gods (Jamie Page, Graham Green, John
Meyer and James Morley), and The Allstar Blues Band (Dave Hole, Rick Steele, Bob Patient, special guest Brian Cadd and a host
of others).
Tickets are on sale now through BOCS.
Part proceeds to Support Act Ltd, Australia’s music industry benevolent fund
2009 WAMi FESTIVAL
HALL OF FAME
Each year (well, apart from last year!) WAM recognises the significant achievements by someone who has come from the WA
music scene through induction into the WAM Hall Of Fame. Initiated in 2004, we started off by inducting a fairly large group of
people who had been previously honoured either through the early (mid-80’s) West Coast Rock Awards, the slightly less early
(early ‘90s) Rock’n’Roll Of Renown, or the awarding of Golden WAMis through the late 90’s and early noughties.
That first group included such luminaries of the local scene as Kim Salmon, Suze DeMarchi and Lucky Oceans.
Subsequent inductees include Bon Scott, Alan and Stephen Pigram and David McComb.
Which brings us to this year’s inductee, Mr David Faulkner. We’ve actually been trying to get Dave over for the WAMis
for a few years and I’m very pleased that the stars have finally aligned and we’re able to give this fine gentleman, singer and
songwriter with a little band called the Hoodoo Gurus, some well earned acknowledgement in his home town.
In 1977 David Faulkner was one of the founding members of The Victims and co-wrote the track Television Addict
which is regarded as one the best Australia punk rock songs ever written. After The Victims split in 1979, Faulkner joined the
Mannikins and in 1981 he formed the Hoodoo Gurus with James Baker. The Hoodoo Gurus recorded eight original studio albums
and were inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame in 1997.
So, congratulations to David Faulkner for being selected as the 2009 WAMi Hall Of Fame Inductee. I look forward to
the presentation at Metro City on Wednesday, May 6.
The 2009 WAMi Festival will once again head into regional WA areas to showcase West Australian artists. The WAMi
Regional Tours And Events run from Tuesday, May 12, to Saturday, May 23. Plus, the third annual Regional Round Table
industry event will talk regional music on Wednesday, May 6.
This year, the WAMi Festival tours and events will head to Meekatharra, Mount Magnet, Yalgoo, Mullewa,
Geraldton, Pinjarra, Bunbury, Margaret River, Manjimup, and Quindanning - with the programme featuring a swag of
WAMi live showcases and music skills workshops at remote schools along the way.
Touring the mid-west region from May 12-17 will be Denmark-based hip hop act Delta Forse, (featuring MC
Optamus from Downsyde), taking part in various music skills school workshops and performances, plus all-ages
and licensed live music showcases in Geraldton. This WAMi tour is presented by Country Arts WA, and The Mid-West
Development Commission.
The Peel region showcase in Pinjarra on May 17 will feature The Words; 2006 WAM Song Of The Year winner,
Emily Barker; plus local supports at Redcliffe On The Murray. The Peel region showcase is presented in conjunction with
The Peel Music Foundation.
The Country Arts LOUDER / WAMi south west and wheatbelt tour features the Sneaky Weasel Gang (Peel)
and Desert Radio (South West) on tour together, with various local supports. The tour will hit Bunbury, Margaret River,
Manjimup and Quindanning. The Manjimup all-ages event also will feature Abbe May and Ashoka. This tour is presented
in conjunction with Bunbury’s Rock’n’Roll High School; The Bunbury Riots; and youth music organisation, Bands At
Manjimup.
For a full calendar of regional events, see the WAMi Festival Calendar.
