Good week for Bradwell
Tigers run the

The Bradwell Institute baseball team won back-to-back-toback victories at away games this
week.
The wins improve the Tigers
to 12-4 overall and 10-1 in Region
3-AAAAA. According to ga.
prepcountry.com, BI holds a narrow lead over Camden and Jenkins.
On Wednesday, the diamond
Tigers beat McIntosh County
Academy 10-7 in Darien.
Bradwell pitcher Garrett
McCorkle threw five innings for
the win. McCorkle walked four,
struck out four and gave up five
hits and seven runs. Chris Rafferty threw 1-1/3 innings and
gave up four hits and a walk
before Jacob Dill came in to pitch
the rest of the way and earn the
save.
Bradwell hitters had 13 hits
against MCA pitching. Leonard
Felton had two singles and a
double. Eric Wells, Mitch Rogers
and Alton Malpass singled. Jacob
Dill singled and drove in two
runs. Garrett McCorkle had two
hits and two RBIs.
Josh Driggers had a pair of
hits and Adam Corwin had two
hits and an RBI.
On Thursday the Tigers routed
Savannah High 21-4 in three
innings.

all three contests to stay on top in Region 3-AAAAA.

swing Friday was a visit to Garden City where they took on
Islands High and earned a comeback 11-9 win. Wells went 3-for4
to lead BI hitters while Dill got
the save.
Bradwell faces Camden on
Wednesday in Hinesville in a
battle among region contenders,
but the Tigers also have to travel
to Brunswick on Monday and
play host to Windsor Forest on
Tuesday
“We still need be ready to
play each and every game,”
Bradwell coach Rhett Hellgren
said. “We have a good chance of
winning this region but we have
to stay focused and play up to our
standards.”

The Tigers will host “Pink Day”
and ask that all fans where pink
to commemorate and honor
breast cancer awareness.
Tickets are available at the
gate and are $5.
Turkey shoot today
at Post 321
East Liberty County American
Legion Post 321 will host its
second monthly Turkey Shoot at
2 p.m. today at the Dorchester
Civic Center off Islands Hwy in
Midway.
Soft drinks, water, hot dogs
and burgers will be available.
Last month’s Turkey Shoot was
deemed a huge success by participants.

AAU players
sought
The Hinesville Lady Hawks
girls’ AAU basketball team is
seeking players ages 9-14. The
organization is geared to players
of all levels and no child will be
turned away. The team also is
seeking volunteer coaches and
sponsors for its upcoming season. The initial cost to join the
team is $105, which will cover
the cost of the uniform and registration into the AAU basketball

Maternik nabs another Eagles have big
shoes to fill at CB
postseason honor

Bradwell
Institute’s
Lady Tiger senior basketball player Mariah Maternik was named to the Georgia Sportswriters Association all-state basketball
team as an honorable mention selection, the GSWA
announced Thursday.
Maternik averaged 17
points per game while helping the Lady Tigers to a
29-1 record.
She scored 374 points to
lead Region 3-AAAAA and
was 16 of 43 from beyond
the 3-point line. Maternik
finished third in the region
in treys.
Maternik also was 16th
in rebounds with 89, sixth
in steals with 45 and first in
assists with 70.
The Lady Tigers went
16-0 in the region and spent
much the second half of the
season ranked highly in
various top 10 polls.

second round of the state High scoring senior Mariah Maternik was named to the
playoffs before losing Georgia Sportswriters Association all-state team as an
honorable mention.

Panthers fall
10-0 to No. 1

Top-ranked Wayne County held
on to the top spot in Region 2A-AAAA
and Liberty County High School
dropped to 1-7 in the region after the
Yellow Jackets beat the Panthers 10-0
in five innings Friday in Jesup.
Panther freshman Jake Lee started
on the mound and tossed 2-1/3
innings, giving up four runs. Brandon
Whitmore came in to finish the third
and fourth innings and allowed two
runs. He was pulled in the fifth
inning and Richard Lovelady finished on the mound giving up the last
four runs.
Cameron Harris had the Panthers’
only hit. Liberty County is 4-10 overall and will travel to Ware County on
Tuesday for another region game.
Carson Hill was arguably
the most — if not only —
consistent thing about the
Georgia Southern Eagles
between 2006 and 2010.
The former cornerback is
also probably the biggest
name not returning to the
Eagles in 2011.
Opposite Hill last season
was Laron Scott, who put
his name into GSU record
books as a junior, setting or
tying school records in interceptions (6), kick returns
(44) and kick return yards
(1,161).
He isn’t on the practice
field either, sitting out spring
camp with an injury.
Playing with the ones this
spring are cornerbacks
Lavelle Westbrooks and
Hudson Presume, who each
have very different stories
so far in their GSU careers.
Presume, a rising senior,
has been battling injuries his
whole career. His 2009 season came to an end on the
road at Appalachian State,
and a preseason injury in
2010 kept him on the sidelines as a junior.
“He was hurt for so much
of last year, and we just
didn’t know if he’d get
healthy enough to ever play
again,” said GSU coach Jeff
Monken. “To his credit, he’s
really worked. He looks a
lot better, and he’s improving. You’re rusty when you
don’t play, and he’s knocking some of the rust off.”
That’s done and over
with,” Presume added about
the injuries. “Now I’m back
with my teammates. It’s a
great feeling, to tell you the
truth. I’m working hard and
the guys are working hard.”
Hill spent much of the
2010 season battling injuries
as well, so Westbrooks, then
a true freshman, ended up
starting eight games and
picking up 32 tackles and a
pair of interceptions in the
process.
“He’s a ton ahead. A ton
ahead,” said Monken about
the progress made by Westbrooks last season. “He pre-

Pierce hands Blue Tide another loss

The Long County High School
baseball team endured a fifth
straight loss Friday, falling 10-0
in five innings to visiting Pierce
County.
Shawn Mills started on the
mound for the Blue Tide and
didn’t allow a hit in the inning,
but the Bears capitalized on four
Long County errors in the inning
to go up 3-0. The Bears took
advantage of a pair of hits and
two more errors in the second
inning to go up 7-0.
Long County coach Brian
Thomas pulled Mills in the third
inning and brought in Jacob
Turner, but the Bears tacked on
two more hits and Long County
made another error to help extend
Pierce County’s lead to 8-0.
In the bottom of the third, the
Blue Tide loaded the bases on
two hit batters and a single from

Turner was hit by a line drive
in the top of the fourth. Senior
Jonathan Flynn took the mound
and shut down the Bears until the

runs.
Long County managed two
hits and had nine errors. The Blue
Tide are 5-13 overall and 1-9 in
2-AA. They face No. 7-ranked
Toombs County on Tuesday in
Lyons at 5:45 p.m.
