OHIO
CANCER and ASIAN AMERICANS,
NATIVE HAWAIIANS AND PACIFIC ISLANDERS
1
National Cancer Trends for AAs and NHPIs
Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians and Pacific
Islanders (AAs and NHPIs) tend to have lower cancer
incidence rates than non-Hispanic whites, except for
Native Hawaiian women. Native Hawaiians and
Samoans have the greatest incidence and mortality
rates of the AA and NHPI groups. Liver, stomach, and
nasopharyngeal cancers are more prevalent in certain
groups and exceed rates for non-Hispanic whites.
Unfavorable patterns of stage at diagnosis for cancers of
the colon and rectum, breast, cervix uteri, and prostate
suggest a need for cancer control interventions in
selected groups.
2,3
Impact of Cancer on AAs and NHPIs
 Compared to whites, AA and NHPI men are
twice as likely to have stomach cancer. AA and
NHPI women are almost three times as likely to
have stomach cancer.
 AA and NHPI men are 40% less likely to have
prostate cancer as white men, but prostate
cancer is the top cancer for AA and NHPI men.
 AA and NHPI women are 30% less likely to have
breast cancer as white women, but breast
cancer is still the top cancer for AA and NHPI
women.
 AA and NHPI men and women have three times
the incidence of liver & intrahepatic bile duct
(IBD) cancer as the non-Hispanic white
population.
 AA and NHPI men are twice as likely and AA
and NHPI women are 2.6 times as likely to die
from stomach cancer as compared to the nonHispanic white population.

The NHPI population of Ohio is only 0.02%, but is
increasing. Samoans are the largest group, making up
almost two-thirds of the NHPIs. Their population has
almost quadrupled since 2000. Guamanians and
Chamorros are the smallest group and their population
has decreased in Ohio.
Languages Spoken
Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians and Pacific
Islanders speak over 100 languages and dialects. In
Ohio, 59% (22,856) of native Asians and 14% (17,152)
of foreign-born Asians speak English only. Of Asians
who speak other language(s) besides English, 3%
(1,271) of natives and 16% (19,256) of foreign-born
speak English not well or not at all.

graduate, which is equivalent to the NHPI population. A
greater proportion of NHPIs are high school graduates
(38%) or have some college experience or their
associate’s degree (32%). Over 60% of Asians hold a
bachelor’s degree or higher, while only 23% of Ohioans
are college graduates.

Cancer Sites/Types
Though female breast cancer and prostate cancer are
the most prevalent cancers among the AA and NHPI
population, lung and bronchus cancer is the greatest
killer along within the state and white populations. The
same cancers that affect whites the most are also found
in AAs and NHPIs. Overall, Asians and Pacific Islanders
have higher liver and IBD cancer rates (9.7) and
stomach rates (7.4) compared to whites. In fact, Asians
and Pacific Islanders have twice the death rate from liver
and IBD cancer.
