HAILEY’S COMMENT
I said it last Sunday and I’ll say it again: “I’m excited about all the things that are happening at
Hayes Barton Baptist Church!” It is no exaggeration for me to say that I can see remarkable
progress by the hour. As I write this column on this Thursday afternoon (Sept. 20), a multitude of
sounds can be heard as construction workers outside my office window add the finishing touches to
the Dr. T. L. Cashwell, Jr. Corridor. There are saws and grinders, hammers and shovels, even air
compressors and aerial lifts. If I listen carefully enough, I can even hear gentle strokes of paint
brushes!
By the time you receive this newsletter the Cashwell Corridor will be open. This spacious new
corridor intersects with the main corridor in our Education Building and offers convenient access
to our Sanctuary, Fellowship Hall, elevator, and church offices. It includes a lovely entrance,
handicap restrooms, seating areas and a beautiful bay window that overlooks our courtyard. When
you see it, I am sure you will agree that this is a wonderful addition to our church facilities. On
behalf of the entire congregation I want to express our sincere gratitude to the many people who
have helped us achieve this goal. Well done, good and faithful servants.

Of course, we’re not finished yet. The work continues on the Family Life Center (FLC). As I
noted last Sunday, many of the rooms in the FLC, including the gymnasium, are nearing
completion. Earlier this week the concrete was poured for the corridor that will connect the FLC
to the Education Building. By this time next week the framing on the connector should be nearing
completion. All of this is to say that we’re right on schedule for our Grand Opening and
Dedication on Sunday, November 4th. I am especially pleased with the work of those who are
planning all of the festivities for this special day. The day will begin and end with worship, and
there will be lots of fun, food, and fellowship in between. It is going to be one of the great
moments in the history of Hayes Barton Baptist Church. But—and here’s the catch—we need your
presence and your help. So if you should get a call from a friend at church asking for your
assistance, please be ready to respond with an enthusiastic “Yes!” We need the involvement of all
of our people in this project, and that includes You!

To facilitate the work of the church, standing and ministry committees and councils are appointed annually by the Committee on Committees. The Committee on Committees is currently seeking members of
the church to serve on these committees and councils. The members of Committee on Committees invite you to express interest in serving on any of these committees and councils. Please go to

DivorceCare
We are pleased to offer to our church and community a support resource for those who have encountered the grief, anger and loss of divorce. Judy Martin and Kay Modlin are leading this group. The group
meets during the new Family Night time frame. Please help us get the word out to those who need support at this time. The group will meet in Room 267. Extended childcare will be offered following the
Music & Missions programs. Due to the support group format, limited enrollment is necessary. For information or registration, call Christine at 645-6733.
Y.A.B.S.—Young Adult Bible Study

Chris has been a vibrant part of
the Triangle music scene for
the past ten years. Education
includes a bachelor’s degree in
music from Duke University.
He performs regularly in the
area as well as all over the country with Chris Boerner Quartet,
Mosadi Music, The Proclivities,
and Who’s Bad. In addition to
jazz and classical guitar Chris is
fluent in popular styles as well
including rock-n-roll, blues, and
country. Lessons will concentrate on rhythm, technique,
sight reading, repertoire, and
music theory. Style of music
will depend on the individual
student’s interests with a goal
of performing in one of the
monthly recitals.
All the young and young-at-heart among our adults are invited to participate. The group is studying The
Women of the Bible, a 52-week journey through the Bible from Genesis to Revelation with an emphasis
on the ladies! This co-ed group enjoys great fellowship and a casual dialogue approach, with James
Dupree facilitating. Join them in Room 171 each Wednesday at 6:15 p.m.
Extended Session Volunteers Needed
We still have 11 spots available for Extended Session volunteers. Four Sundays a year during the worship hour is all the commitment that you need to make. Please call or email Kristen Muse and let her
know what age group you would like to help in (infants – 5 year old volunteers are needed).

We are grateful for all our teachers and look forward to this time of appreciation and training for teachers in all age ranges. Dr. Hailey will be our keynote speaker this year, and there will be experienced guest
facilitators for the training sessions. The evening will begin with Gathering Fellowship at 5:30 p.m., Dinner at 5:45 p.m., Program at 6:15 p.m. and Training sessions for all age ranges at 7 p.m.. Teachers are

We continue to receive the Grace Offering at HBBC. At this writing, we have passed the halfway
point toward our goal of $12,000. Each of the five causes which we support is worthy of our contribution, so it is important that we reach our goal to provide as much support as possible.
In this column, I wish to highlight the Baptist Retirement Homes of North Carolina, Incorporated.
Founded in 1951, BRH of NC is one of North Carolina’s most respected providers of long term care.
With five retirement communities throughout our state, BRH provides all levels of care for Older
Adults: Independent Living, Assisted Living, Memory Enhanced Residence, and Medical and Nursing
Care. The five locations are as follows:

KIDZ STUFF CONSIGNMENT UPDATE
The Fall/Winter KIDZ STUFF Consignment Sale held on
September 13-15 was a huge success! Consigners who cleaned
out closets and shoppers who stocked up all ended up winners. It was a fantastic opportunity for people to earn money
and give back to the church and community at the same time.

2008, and think about participating as a consigner, volunteer,
vendor or shopper. Being part of this sale – on whatever level
you choose – is always a great feeling.

THE INNER CHAMBER
In Revelation 8, we read an intriguing allegorical vision of the throne room of Heaven: “An angel
who had a golden censer came and stood at the altar. He was given much incense to offer, with the
prayers of all the saints, on the golden altar before the throne. The smoke of the incense, together
with the prayers of the saints, went up before God from the angel’s hand. Then the angel took the
censer, filled it with fire from the altar, and hurled it on the earth; and there came peals of thunder,
rumblings, flashes of lightning and an earthquake.”

It is interesting that such power broke out upon earth after the angel mixed the incense of heaven
“together with the prayers of all the saints.” The combined and correlated prayers of all God’s people
do make a difference! Down through history, when God’s people prayed, amazing things have happened – and when God’s people prayed together, astounding things happened. Wrong is righted,
evil is aborted, egocentric schemes are foiled and dishonest purposes are thwarted – when God’s
people seek them. We can make a difference through prayer!
Lord, we need the power of Heaven, for the power of earth can be so oppressive. Forgive us for praying for so
little, so infrequently, with such weak faith. Lift our eyes to this vision over and over again. Encourage us to join
our prayers with other believers for the good of the world, our families, our nation, our communities, our lives and
our church. In the name of Jesus who taught us to pray for Thy will to be done, Amen.
