First impressions are critical to the job search process! Recruiters attending BGSU’s EXPO Job and Internship Fairs stated that they spend between three and five minutes with each student, so be sure to make the most of your time. An elevator pitch is a great introduction to use when you first meet a potential employer. It is a summary of your talents, accomplishments, skills, and interests. Here is our best advice for developing an effective elevator pitch for use at EXPO and other career networking events. STEP 1. BEFORE YOU GET STARTED: A. Think about past jobs, projects, volunteer experiences, student organization accomplishments, or tasks that are related to positions of interest. B. Identify 2-3 skills gained from these related experiences. C. Consider 2-3 personal qualities that make you a good candidate. 4. Express your interest in learning more about the organization by asking a direct question or requesting an interview. STEP 2. OUTLINE: STEP 3. REHEARSE: A. Choose the details from step 1 you want to communicate during your pitch. B. Use the following scenario as a guide and be conversational – do not simply memorize information. 1. Introduce yourself by your first and last name, major, and class standing. 2. Briefly share your knowledge about the organization, field, or industry and why you are interested. EXAMPLE OF AN ELEVATOR PITCH: Consider all the suggestions as you review this example: Hello, my name is Frieda Falcon. I am currently a junior, majoring in Human Development and Family Studies. My expected graduation date is May 2017. During my undergraduate career, I completed an internship with the Wood County Job and Family Services Department. From this opportunity, I have gained working knowledge of community outreach services, as well as family and child advocacy. I applied this knowledge when volunteering with at-risk teens in the community. After researching your organization on WorkNet, I am interested in learning more about potential opportunities where my advocacy and programming skills can benefit you. Here is a copy of my resume for your review. Would you please provide me with more information regarding the position you are currently recruiting for? 6 3. Explain what you can offer by highlighting your relevant experience and skills. BGSU CAREER CENTER hire.bgsu.edu A. Practice your elevator pitch alone and with a peer. Make sure to ask for feedback and suggestions. B. Time yourself to make sure your pitch is not too long. The more you practice, the more confident you will be. REMEMBER TO: • Make eye contact and smile. • Shake hands (use a firm, confident handshake) and state your name. • Use the person’s name, if known, then begin giving your elevator pitch. • Incorporate the company research you completed prior to the fair. • Listen to what the recruiter says about the company and the questions that may be asked. • Thank the recruiters for their time: “I appreciate you taking the time to speak with me; it was great to meet you.” • Be sure to ask: “Do you have a business card?”, and “Do you plan to interview students tomorrow?” The one-minute pitch is just a guide. You may not always be able to deliver it in its entirety. SPRING 2016 EXPO GUIDE FALCONS SOAR! USE THE SOAR MODEL TO ANSWER BEHAVIORAL INTERVIEW QUESTIONS WHAT IS SOAR? The SOAR Model is an informative way to organize your responses and communicate the skills, knowledge, and experience you have to offer an employer. Be sure to relate your examples to the position for which you are interviewing. Employers know that past behavior is considered the best predictor of future behavior. So, recruiters often use behavioral interview questions to learn how you have performed in previous jobs or internships. Employers are intentional about the behavioral interview questions they ask. They align these questions with the responsibilities and duties of the position and the traits needed to be successful. Reviewing position descriptions is a great way to identify potential behavioral interview questions that may be asked and be prepared to respond to these questions. USE THE SOAR MODEL TO ANSWER BEHAVIORAL INTERVIEW QUESTIONS First describe the SITUATION (S) in which you found yourself; then the OBSTACLE (O), problem, or task you addressed, overcame, or implemented. Next explain the ACTION (A) you took to accomplish it, and finally, the RESULTS (R) you achieved. This model enables you to keep your answer concise, to organize it logically, and to provide details about how you achieved a successful outcome. Be sure to incorporate all the letters, S-O-A-R, to strengthen your response. Please read the position description, and review the behavioral interview questions that follow. POSITION DESCRIPTION: NON-PROFIT MANAGEMENT INTERN The Non-Profit Management Intern assists in the coordination of all largescale programs for the organization and reports directly to the Vice President of Programming. The intern will: coordinate outreach activities for all programs; develop and implement program evaluations; recruit volunteers to staff events; promote the programs via social media; and write local newspaper articles and website content. Seeking individuals proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, Outlook, etc.). POSSIBLE BEHAVIORAL INTERVIEW QUESTIONS: • How do you decide what gets top priority when scheduling your time? • Share an example illustrating how you motivate others. What was the outcome? • Organization is a trait that will help you to be successful in this internship. Please give an example that illustrates your ability to organize and manage projects. THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND WHEN PREPARING YOUR ANSWERS: 1. Read the position description carefully and outline the duties and required traits. 2. Research the typical responsibilities of that position on O*Net (http:// www.onetonline.org/). 3. Think of your most successful related accomplishments or experiences (e.g., internship, volunteer work, student organization, class projects, etc.). 4. Include positive examples. Don’t describe a social event or situation that included improper behavior or poor decision making. 5. Remember to stay on topic and be concise, but provide enough details to give your interviewer a picture of how you perform, and link it to the position for which you are applying. For more details about behavioral interviewing questions and how to answer them, go to hire.bgsu.edu, click on Career Resources on the Student page, and then the B!G Job Search Guide. A behavioral interview question for the intern position described earlier is to the right. QUESTION Tell me about a time when you took initiative within a team. SAMPLE RESPONSE S – SITUATION For my marketing class, I collaborated with three peers to work with an assigned local community organization to help them advertise one of their annual fundraising events. Charged with creating flyers and managing Twitter and Facebook platforms, we regularly communicated with the organization to ensure their needs were met. This class project collaboration happens every year, with the marketing class working to support the agency’s events. O – OBSTACLE However, at the beginning of the semester, despite the recurring partnership and consistent project expectations, there was no formal documentation of the organization’s expectations and procedures. A manual or project binder of some kind would have been helpful for both the agency and our group to better accomplish our goals in a more efficient manner. A – ACTION Recognizing this gap in resources, I first presented this idea to our group to get their feedback. After reaching a consensus that this was a need and could be helpful, we asked our coordinator if anything like it had existed previously, if so, how successful it was, and the feasibility of us creating this resource throughout the semester for future groups. R – RESULT The organization and our professor appreciated our proactive approach to identify and address this need. With their approval, our group thoroughly documented and consolidated all of our communications, procedures, and future recommendations into a project binder that is still used today by the organization and my marketing professor. @/bgsucareers (#hirefalcons) JOBS, INTERNSHIPS, AND CO-OPS 7 EXPO GUIDE SPRING 2016 INTERN SUCCESS STORIES LEARN HOW BGSU STUDENTS GAINED EX QA & STUDENT SPOTLIGHT events, and assisting in any other tasks needed for the events, such as helping with marketing and promoting. I also helped with a variety of administrative tasks such as organizing the main lobby’s reading materials and writing and editing policies. Q: How did you learn about your internship? A: I was in need of one more class for the semester to remain full-time, and my friend suggested looking into internships. Since my major is psychology, I spoke with the department, and they gave me a list of suggested places that students typically look into for internships. NAMI seemed to align most with my professional goals, so I contacted them, and after interviewing, I was asked to intern for them. Q: A: I would highly recommend anyone that is contemplating doing a co-op or internship to take a leap of faith and do it! This has been such a rewarding and incredible experience for me, and is an opportunity to gain experience and knowledge in one’s particular field. Q: A: What’s next? For me, I have another internship this spring with Zepf Center in Bowling Green, where I will be work in the area of mental health again. I plan to graduate this May with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, and then continue my education next fall to receive my Master’s in Social Work. My goal is to one day become a licensed social worker, and counsel individuals who have mental illnesses. STUDENT SPOTLIGHT What did you enjoy about your internship? A: COURTNEY CHALFIN National Alliance for Mental Illness of Wood County Intern Fall 2015, Bowling Green, OH Senior Psychology Major I enjoyed working with individuals in the office who are just as passionate about helping others with their mental health as I am. Being with the staff at NAMI deepened my passion for this field, and reassured me that this is the career path for me. Q: What did you accomplish during your internship? Q: Where did you intern? What did you do? A: I completed a fall 2015 internship at the National Alliance for Mental Illness (NAMI) of Wood County, which offers support to those who suffer from a mental illness or have a family member with one, as well as advocates and educates the public about mental health. During my time at NAMI, I was a Program Coordinator, which included creating schedules, setting up rooms for 8 A: During my internship, I think the biggest thing I accomplished was growing more as a person. I learned to communicate better in a professional setting and to take initiative when I wasn’t asked to do a specific task or being supervised. These are skills I’ll carry with me to other professional settings, but everyday occurrences as well. Q: What advice would you give someone that is contemplating doing a co-op or internship? BGSU CAREER CENTER hire.bgsu.edu JENNIFER MARIE MCDOUGALL Cedar Point Intern Summer 2013, 2014, and 2015 Sandusky, OH Senior Exercise Science Major Q: Where did you intern? What did you do? A: I interned at Cedar Point for three summers (Summer 2013, 2014, and 2015). My first summer internship program was designed to give me the opportunity to assist the Park Operations Department at Cedar Point in all aspects of its day-to-day operational activities. It was a 12-week rotation, which included working in all key departments of the park, rotating every two weeks, to the following departments: Park Operations Office, Admissions, Rides, Marketing, Merchandise, and Human Resources. The focus and intent of the program is to provide a broad comprehensive view of what is involved in operating a large, world class amusement park. During my second summer, I mainly worked in the Park Operations office and Admissions department. This past summer I was chosen as a Park Ambassador, which is part of the “The Best Day Crew” team. I was hand-picked by Cedar Point’s management team to be the “Face of Cedar Point”. It was such an honor being chosen by one of my managers to be on this team, because you could not specifically apply for this position. The main goal of “The Best Day Crew” is ensuring guests have their best day experience following the motto “every guest, every day, every time”. Our job duties consisted of: starting off the day helping with the arrival process by checking guests early entry tickets inside the park, giving daily VIP tours to guests (one of my favorite job duties), greeting and interacting with guests for special catered events, engaging in fun activities at the waterpark with guests, helping with media events, and helping out with nightlife events. If we were not doing these specific jobs, we would roam throughout the park with the purpose of interacting and approaching many different guests, passing out a variety of buttons for guests to wear, checking in on how their day was going and if there was anything we could do to make their experience better. I loved the freedom of being able to do this and knowing I was able to be a part of helping make guests experience at the park memorable. SPRING 2016 EXPO GUIDE XPERIENCE, WHAT THEY ACCOMPLISHED, AND BEST ADVICE Q: A: How did you learn about your internship? I learned about this internship at the end of my freshman year through BGSU WorkNet. I was hired by the HR Manager of Cedar Point at the Career Center on my interview day. Q: What did you enjoy about your internship? A: My favorite part about working at Cedar Point was being surrounded with the fun, energetic, and happy environment. Working at Cedar Point is always a new, fun, and adventurous work day every day. I loved being able to be an influence and help make guests have their “Best Day Experience,” that would always make my day seeing a smile on their face. Even though some days can be long and strenuous, I would not trade my experience for anything else. Q: A: What did you accomplish during your internship? Doing this internship has helped me improve my work ethic and my ability to build relationships with both guests and associates at Cedar Point. I have never experienced so much guest interaction on a day-to-day basis and have absolutely loved it. Cedar Point has helped me grow as a person professionally by gaining hands on customer experience, improved my skills in communication, strategic planning, problem solving, and spur of the moment critical thinking. What I loved most about this experience and learned about myself is I am definitely a people person and would like a job in the future that deals with a lot of social interaction! Q: What advice would you give someone that is contemplating doing a co-op or internship? A: I would highly suggest doing a co-op or internship for anyone, especially during your college years! I think internships are the best way to get someone’s “feet wet in the field”, especially in industries of interest. It is definitely a great learning experience and looks good on a resume! If somebody does an internship/co-op and it isn’t for them or did not turn out the way they thought it would, they can take it as a learning experience. Q: A: What’s next? I am going into my last semester this spring. With my major, Exercise Science, it requires an internship in our final semester at 40 hours a week, 600 hours total by the end of the semester, and 15 credit hours. I am doing my internship at Verizon Wireless Corporate office at their Health and Wellness Center in Alpharetta, GA (just slightly north of Atlanta). I am spending my spring semester down there and am super excited for it! I was very fortunate enough to have been chosen for this internship because it is highly competitive. They only select one intern a semester, so I am very proud to say that! FOUR -YEAR CAREER ACTION PLAN The key to a successful college experience is to be intentional, and the key to successfully finding a job or internship is the same. Use the Career Center’s Four-Year Career Action Plan as a guide while you navigate the process. THAT’S A WRAP! FOLLOW-UP WITH A “THANK YOU” Congratulations! You attended the EXPO Job & Internship Fair, made many excellent connections, and participated in interviews. You are now confident that your job search is rolling! What is the next step? Follow-up by sending a thank you message to the employers you 10 10 BGSU CAREER CENTER hire.bgsu.edu met at EXPO to reaffirm your interest, remind them of your qualifications, highlight your fit within their organization, and request an interview. TIPS: • Send thank you messages within a day or two after your meeting with the recruiter. • Many recruiters are out of the office and keep in touch via e-mail. Therefore, an email thank you is a timely, professional way to communicate. • Address your thank you message to an individual instead of the name of an office or department. Refer to your notes on the recruiter business cards you collected at EXPO. • Keep your thank you letter concise, but be sure to highlight your skills and experience and focus on the company’s needs, rather than your own. Your letter is an opportunity to tell the recruiter what you can offer the organization. See examples of thank you letters, in the “Job Search Letters”, Chapter 4, of the B!G Job Search Guide on the Career Center website at hire.bgsu.edu. SPRING 2016 EXPO GUIDE THE ONLINE JOB SEARCH: TWEETING, LINKING, AND CREATING A PERSONAL BRAND THROUGH SOCIAL MEDIA Social media is an increasingly popular tool for job/internship searches! Not surprising, both students and employers are using these effective tools. In the National Association of Colleges and Employers’ (NACE) 2014 Student Survey, nearly 89% of students used Facebook in their job search, more than 87% used LinkedIn, and 58% used Twitter. Additionally, according to a 2014 survey from Jobvite, “78% of recruiters have successfully hired a candidate who was identified or introduced through a social network or social media.” Searching for a job is more than just submitting your resume. Utilizing social media and networking can increase your chances of obtaining an interview leading to your dream job! As you utilize social media and networking in your job search, be sure to create a consistent online brand reputation (i.e., assets or skills associated with your online presence). Be true to your experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities; and showcase appropriate examples. Utilize industry keywords in your profiles, conversations, and posts. Always communicate in a professional manner, even within the Twitter constraints of 140 characters. TIPS FOR USING SOCIAL MEDIA IN YOUR JOB SEARCH LINKEDIN LinkedIn is a professional networking site where users can create a profile, connect to others, and present information about their professional careers. LinkedIn offers groups and applications primarily for networking, idea and information sharing, and company research. According to a 2013 Jobvite poll, LinkedIn is the social media network of choice, with 94% of recruiters using this site. Follow these steps to make the best use of the LinkedIn professional features: 1. Create your professional profile. Highlight information from your resume to demonstrate your most marketable professional characteristics. If you add a photo, be sure to use a professional headshot. Include information about your key career or work-related accomplishments, experience, or knowledge. Utilize the profile box to share brief information that best describes your background and work history. 2. Ask for recommendations from your connections. FACEBOOK Facebook is primarily a social networking site; however, many employers have Facebook pages as well. Here are some suggestions for appropriate use of Facebook: 1. Make your profile professional and create privacy settings. If you include a picture, make sure it is appropriate. Remove tags of yourself from any inappropriate pictures on your site or the site of others. Even if your site is private, an employer may have a connection to one of your friends and a way to view your content, so remember to always maintain your privacy settings. 2. Keep it positive. Negative posts showcase a negative personality. Be sure to post only positive comments about your current or potential employer. TWITTER Twitter is a micro blog where users are able to “tweet” information in @/bgsucareers (#hirefalcons) 140 characters or fewer. Tweeters can follow common interests by using the # sign or “hashtag” in front of the common conversation term and then searching for that hashtag. If a user wants to reply or talk to another user, the use of the “@” symbol along with the other user’s Twitter username will create a public mention and tweet. A user also can “direct message” another person, which is a private message. Here are some great ways to utilize Twitter in the job search: 1. Follow companies. Look up and follow company Twitter feeds of interest. Recruiters may keep Twitter accounts to share information on campus visits, job & internship fairs, and job postings. Company Twitter feeds also may include recent news and product information. 2. Follow relevant hashtags to your search. Some examples of job hashtags include: #recruiting, #jobadvice, #jobsearch, #careers, #jobs. You also can search by specific types of jobs, for example #prjobs, #accounting, etc. 3. Participate in #____chat. Look for and follow industry-related #hashtag conversations. Similar to LinkedIn, contribute to the conversations, advertise your job search, and ask for advice. These are just a few tips about using social media in your job search. Google “social media job search” or another key word combination for more tips and information, blogs, and articles. Finally, Google yourself to see what comes up. Is it all positive? REFERENCES: Jobvite (2014). In 1951 William Henry Harrison Park was created when the Pemberville Civic Club sold their land along the Portage River to the Park District. Over the years, each park was developed with shelters, picnic areas, and playground equipment; however, the costs associated with the maintenance of these facilities outweighed the small millage set aside for Park District operations. As a result, the Park District donated the Nyswander-Thurston Park Property to the State in 1969, creating Mary Jane Thurston State Park. With the addition of maintenance responsibilities at the former Wood County Infirmary site, potential responsibilities for operation of the proposed Cedar Creeks Preserve, and the demand for new park areas, it became apparent that the Board of Park Commissioners must work to pass a levy in order to continue park operations. With increased awareness of park and recreational needs within Wood County, a park levy campaign was organized, and in May of 1988, a park levy was approved by the voters. This has meant new life for the Park District, and improved park facilities and expanded programs for area residents.
