You have presented herewith the reports of the House Surgeon, House Committee, Secretary and Treasurer, Finance Committee and Clerk, which will give succinctly the present condition of the Hospital.
We are thankful to say that there was no epidemic influence
in the city during the year. The number of patients remaining at
the last annual report was 642. The number admitted in 1891
was 6706, making the total number of inmates treated in 1891.

The number of deaths was 1028, making a total mortality
of
a little less than fourteen per cent.
There were 1271 cases of minor surgery treated in the amphitheater, and then allowed to return home. In the dental department 1725 patients were attended. Then, to summarize, the total
number of inmates was 7348 ; number of amphitheater cases 1271 ;
number of cases of dentistry 1725 ; number of patients treated in
the out-door clinic 13,193 ; making a grand total of 23,537.

These buildings have been constructed upon plans and specifications designed to meet all the requirements of the outdoor service, and furnish accommodations for the outdoor treatment of
men, women and children-white

The consultation rooms are so appointed as to give medical
relief to all clases of patients suffering from general and special
diseases.

-These clinic buildings will be fitted with all modern facilities
for the treatment of general and special diseases.
The furniture will be made, according to plans and specifications, of oak or ash, and will be of the best workmanship for
modern Hospital uses.
The outdoor clinics constitute a part of the medical department of the Hospital. and the various clinical divisions will he
under the charge of the members of the outdoor visiting staff.
The indoor visiting staff will be assigned, as heretofore, to the
various wards in the main building.
All these provisions obviate the disadvantages which have
always attended the treatment of patients, indoor and outdoor, irA
the wards of the Hospital, and establish the two departments of
the Hospital in separate buildings, a system of medical managenient which has been urgently needed for many years.
In reviewing the efforts to accomplish these results, our heart:,a
are saddened by the loss, by death, of one of our most active,
zealous and efficient members, Major J. D. Devereua.

reiterated their necessity at the earliest moment practicable, bti t

as much as they were needed, there were many things even more
urgent, which had to be accomplished first ; and it is with considerable pardonable pride and gratification that we announce we
now have them, and have them paid for.
Great economy and the best financial ability, thanks to our
able and assiduous Finance Committee, and the par value of our
State Warrants, 'for the last few years, enabled the Board to lrnshand its resources and thus complete these long coveted improvements. We congratulate the Hospital, its well wishers and the
indigent, on their completion.
In conclusion, we heartily give due praise and thanks to all
of our coadjutors; first to the good Sisters in their constant,
gentle and most efficient ministrations ; to the House Surgeon
and his Assistant for their always courteous, efficient and
zealous aid and direction ; the Secretary and Treasurer, the
Engineer, the Clerk, the Pathologist, the Apothecary,
the
Dentist, and all the personnel of the Hospital for their faithful
work and invaluable services.
The Ambulance Corps have
done their work well and their services are gratefully
acknowledged.

to Col. Sam' I Boyd, the previous lessee, from January 1,1892,
for twelve months, at a rental of $187.50 per quarter, or a total of
$750, for the year ending December 31,1892.

Gentlemen-Your House Committee beg leave to present the
following summary of improvements, etc., made to the Hospital
during the past year :
There have been purchased and placed in use the following :
A. new improved, " Troy hydraulic
washing machine, "
with sufficient capacity for the requirements of this institution.
A new soup kettle for the kitchen to replace old one, worn
out after use of fourteen years.
A new " feed water heater"

The supplies of meat, bread, milk, fuel and ice, for which
contracts were entered into, have in the main been regularly and
satisfactorily filled and contractors held to strict compliance.
The Rules and Regulations for the government of the institution have been ably and carefully revised tinder the direction of
House Surgeon, with such aid as the Committee could render.
They will be prominently
hung in the Hospital buildings.
In conclusion, your Committee beg to express their high appreciation of the admirable services of the general staff and officers of the Hospital ; they have been fully up to the requirements
of the standard established.
Especially would they note the intelligent and untiring work
of the Chief Engineer, Mr. John Ponder, whose capable direction
has much lightened the labors of your Committee.
Our report
would be incomplete did we fail to mention our sense of obligation to the noble Sisters of Charity for their devotion to their selfassumed, onerous duties.

To the Vice President and Board of Administrators:
Your Committee are pleased to report the virtual completion
of the buildings designed for the outdoor service of the Hospital,
which has been accepted from the builders after approval of the
architect, and await only their proper furnishing and equipment
to enable the Board to inaugurate the service. It will not be
out of place for your Committee to allude briefly to the

handsome arched porch resting on side pilasters,. with a flight of
granite steps ascending to the entrance hall, flanked with bold
rustic coins. The side wings and all corners on the first story are
flanked with the same rustic work and with plaster antte on the
second story, which latter rest on a massive belting course, and
are crowned above with a handsome solid moulded entablature and
blocking course. In the center of each front is a pediment, with
the year of erection, 1891, in raised figures on the panels. The
windows are of large and proportionate size, surrounded with neat
moulded architraves on each floor, and in addition, on the first
story, they are keyed to the belting course. The buildings are arranged with a central hall on each story, flanked on either side
with the various Reception and Consultation Rooms : the whole
fitted up with all the necessary plumbing appliances for supplying
hot and cold water in each Consultation Room, and with heating
and ventilating apparatus required in modern hospital construction.
The upper and lower floors communicate with each other by
wide and handsome stairways, having an easy rise to suit both
aged and young. The walls have been plastered with smooth
finished Acme cement, left in its natural state.
The woodwork internally has been finished with Berry's hard
finish,
oil
showing the natural grain of the wood. Great care has.
been taken to admit a sufficiency of light and air to each roora.,
by windows and wire screens specially devised for the purpose
In each hall will be a mural tablet of fine statuary bronze,
commeworating the erection during the administration of Governor Francis T. Nicholls.
The grounds have been laid off into lawns, with Schilhnget,
paved walks, and the entire frontage on Tulane Avenue has been
enclosed with iron fencing, of ornate and durable workmanship,,
resting on a basement of brickwork, cemented to imitate stone.

The medical work of the year, stated briefly, comprises the
indoor treatment of 7348 patients; the outside relief of 16,189, all
told, amounting to 23,537 patients.
The amount of work necessary to the care of such a large
number of patients must impress any thoughtful mind. Those
who have shared in this work deserve our grateful acknowledgments. The Assistant House Surgeon, Dr. J. 1). Bloom, well
