Scholarship Program General Information
The Santa Monica College Foundation’s Scholarship Program offers privately funded scholarships ranging
from $250 to $2000. Both continuing students and those transferring after the Spring 2011 semester can
apply for scholarships, provided they meet the general qualifications and complete the scholarship
application process by the deadline. While most scholarships do not have a citizenship requirement, some
do require recipients to be a U.S. citizen or Federal Aid eligible non-citizen.
SMC Foundation Scholarships are administered through the SMC Scholarship Office, which is located on the
main SMC campus—at 1738 Pearl Street. The Scholarship Office’s phone number is (310) 434-4290.
Basic Scholarship Application Instructions:
1. Complete the 2010-2011 SMC Scholarship Application.
2. Type a one page personal statement.
Address your academic goals and career aspirations. Indicate your achievements, your
participation in SMC clubs and other leadership experiences, and your involvement in other
extracurricular experiences.
3. Obtain two letters of recommendation.
At least one must be from a teacher. The second may be from a guidance counselor,
community or religious leader, club advisor, immediate supervisor, or another teacher.
4. Complete an electronic 2010-2011 Free Application for Student Financial Aid (FAFSA)—to be
considered for scholarships which factor in a student’s “financial need.”
Students can go to www.fafsa.ed.gov to complete a FAFSA Application. You will also be
applying for Federal and State aid, including grants and a fee waiver. (International students
and AB540-qualified students are not eligible to apply for Federal Aid and can complete the
Financial Information section on the Scholarship Application, instead of the FAFSA.)
Additional Scholarship Application Requirements
Some scholarships may require an essay, writing example, or portfolio. (See list of scholarships.)
2010-2011 Deadline and Scholarship Awarding Process
The deadline for submission of all scholarship materials is February 1, 2011. Applications will then be
assessed and sent to committees. Committees will review the applications, interview applicants, and
select scholarship winners. Winners will be notified by May 27, 2011.
General Qualifications:
 Students need to declare a major through the SMC Admissions Office.
 Students need to complete 12 SMC units and have an overall 2.5 GPA by the end of the Winter 2011



term. At least 6 units of these units must be from regular (non-distance education) classes.
Students need to be enrolled in at least 6 units for the Spring 2011 term—to be considered for a
scholarship. Continuing students, who are awarded a scholarship, must be enrolled in at least 6
units in the Summer or Fall 2011 term—to receive a scholarship check.
Students must not have a Discipline Hold on their records.
Students must not have earned a BA/BS degree.
Scholarship Ceremony and Scholarship Check Disbursement:
 The 2010-2011 SMC Scholarship Ceremony will be held on Saturday, June 11, 2011.
 All students awarded a scholarship will be required to attend the Scholarship Ceremony.

Scholarship checks will be disbursed at the beginning of the Fall 2011 term, after enrollment
is verified.

Guidance for Writing Letters of Recommendation
When writing a letter of recommendation for a student, please provide your
assessment of the applicant’s achievements and potential for success.
This recommendation must be on letterhead stationary from your agency/
organization/school. Please include your contact number for possible verification
purposes.
While there are no required topics for a letter of recommendation, the Scholarship
Office has compiled the following commonly addressed points:


The student’s performance in your class
The student’s academic or career goals and your
impression of her/his ability to accomplish these goals
 Any obstacle that the student has overcome
 Observations of leadership skills
 Observations of contributions to the community
When completed, please send your recommendation to the Scholarship Office or
return it to the student in time to meet the February 1, 2011 deadline.

When you fill out one application, you will be considered for all the scholarships
for which you are qualified. Award amounts vary.

May I be awarded more than one scholarship?
You may win an SMC award as well as non-campus based award(s). Non-campus
based awards are marked with an asterisk (*) in the brochure. Most students are
awarded 1-2 scholarships. We also encourage you to investigate awards offered
by companies, foundations and organizations that do not use our application.
There are more than 75+ books in the SMC Library reference section to explore.

What if I haven’t declared a major?
There are approximately 135 scholarships available to all majors and another
150+ for specific majors, so you must declare a major. You will be considered
for all awards listed under your major, in addition to other awards with specific criteria.

Awards range from $250 - $2000.

When do I get my award?
Awards for SMC continuing students are usually disbursed by check in the fall semester.
Some awards may be disbursed to continuing students who attend summer classes.
Transfer students receive check/s after they have submitted a thank you letter(s).
Vocational and graduated student awards are disbursed upon verified completion
of a program. Outside organizations usually present awards at a special event.

How will I know if I have won?
You will receive notification by mail in late May, and receive an
invitation to the annual awards ceremony usually held the first weekend in June.

Do I need to attend the Annual Awards Ceremony?
Yes. All winners are required to attend the Ceremony. If you do not attend,
you may forfeit your scholarship(s). If you are unable to attend due to unusual
circumstances, please inform the office by mail/e-mail or fax as soon as possible.

Students must maintain the GPA 2.5 or better and follow agency instructions.

A SIMPLE STEP-BY-STEP
GUIDE TO WRITING ESSAYS
Step 1.
Find your focus before you write.
Step 2.
Write a short statement summarizing your response to the question what
makes you unique?
Step 3.
Choose a technique and write your first draft.
Step 4.
Compare your draft to your summary statement. Did you convey what you
intended? Can you explain how every paragraph and every sentence relates
to your summary? Invite a second opinion.
Step 5.
Read your draft and answer the following questions: Are you bored? Does
your essay sound enthusiastic or does it sound forced? What stands out
because it sounds good to you? Put an “x” next to it and revise it.
Step 6.
Read your essay aloud to a friend.
Step 7.
Read you first sentence. Does it grab your reader? Rewrite the sentence if it
doesn’t succeed in hooking your reader’s interest.
Step 8.
Reread the first sentence of each paragraph. Does each one relate to the
previous idea and continue to increase your reader’s interest? If not, revise it.
Step 9.
Underline every “I”. Eliminate its overuse, particularly at the beginning of
sentences.
Step 10.
Eliminate phrases that sound noncommittal.
Step 11.
Examine your use of the active and passive voice. Revise your draft if you rely
too heavily on the passive voice.
Step 12.
Look for variety in the style and length of your sentences and your
paragraphs. If you don’t find it, revise your essay to achieve it.
Step 13.
Consider your conclusion. Does it add substance to your essay or merely
restate what has already been written? If your ending is weak or boring,
revise it to leave your reader with a good impression of you and your work.

American Association of University Women (AAUW): AAUW was founded in 1881 by women with college and university
degrees - they support higher education.
Ann Carroll Award: Established by SMC Math professor, Ann Carroll.
Anthony Boxer Memorial: Established in 1991 in honor of an Instructional Assistant in the English department.
Art Chesluk Award: Established by Art Chesluk for students who are education/teaching majors.
Aubrey E. Austin, Jr. Memorial: Aubrey Austin was the former chairman of the Santa Monica Bank and played a key role in

Masonic Lodge No. 307: Kidd Family & C. Lee Smith: Established by Santa Monica-Palisades Lodge and
SMC Recreation professor, Jo Kidd.
Mike Jeffs Paddle Tennis: Established by Bill Brothers, who enjoyed recreation and leisure activities.
Morton Anderson, Perry R. Davis & Jacob Rubel: Morton Anderson started the transit system in Santa Monica.
Pearl & Sam Weissman Memorial: Established by Martin, nephew to Pearl and Sam, and his wife, Sherrie Weisman.
Pearl M. Follmer Memorial: Pearl Follmer was an SMC Music professor.
Pete Barrett Memorial: Pete Barrett was owner of Barrett’s Appliances.
Prof. E. Bolivar-Owen: E. Bolivar-Owen is an SMC Modern Language professor who established several of these awards
in 1989.
Robert McClure and J.D. Funk Memorial: Robert McClure and J.D. Funk founded and owned the Santa Monica Evening
Outlook and the Santa Monica Daily newspaper.
Robyn Sorokin Memorial: Established in 1985, and was first granted to a Santa Monica High School graduate.
Roland Waco Memorial: Roland Waco was a Mathematics professor at SMC.
Rotary Club of Santa Monica Nick Holt: Nick Holt was a Rotarian and Vice President of Santa Monica Bank (now U.S. Bank).
Ruth A. Clark Memorial: Established in 1998 by Dr. Robert Williams for a female in Business or Accounting.
Santa Monica Bay Division CRTA: Established in 1988 to encourage students to become professional educators.
Santa Monica Gems Award: Established in 1975 by a group of Santa Monica women. Later revised in 1976 by former Santa
Monica Mayor, SMC Executive Director and community leader, Nat Trives.
Stewart Ferguson Memorial: Award was established to honor a McKinley Elementary School principal.
Susan Bay Nimoy & Leonard Nimoy: Established in 1993 by the Nimoy family for high school students.
Sydney Goldfarb Memorial: Sydney Goldfarb was from New York. He moved to Los Angeles in 1936 and owned a wholesale
souvenir business for 23 years. He was a world traveler and avid art collector.
Sylvia M. Jordan Memorial: Established by Julian Jordan to bring success to students and vitality to the community.
The Archie M. Morrison Rotary Club Achievement: Archie Morrison was Vice President of SMC and a District Governor of
Rotary International.
The Sheldon M. Hayden Memorial Scholarship: Established by SMC’s Continental and Corvette clubs.
Sheldon Hayden was an inspirational teacher and sponsor of their clubs.
Theo Boll & Norma Nyquist Memorial: Established by SMC English Department Chair, Nina Theiss.
Valerie Jeanne Svec Memorial: Established in 1985 by Mauriel Svec.
W. Felix Werner: Felix Werner was an SMC Mathematics professor and a founding member of the Santa Monica College
Foundation.
Warner History Essay Contest: Seth and Clive Warner were SMC History professors.
Willie & Raymond Acevedo Memorial: Established in memory of Raymond Acevedo, former SMC Counselor, and his wife
Willowdean who gave incredible service to SMC students.
Wilson Brothers Builders: Established by Robert Wilson and overseen by his brother, John after his death in 1995.
Y.E.S. (Youth Empowerment Scholarship): Established by SMC English professor, Julie Uslan and her husband, Kenneth.
