Margaret G. Soper
ELLENBURG DEPOT —
Margaret G. "Maggie" Soper,
84, died Saturday, December
19, 1998, at Fletcher Allen
H e a l t h Care in Burlington,
Vermont.
She was born in North Hudson June 29, 1914, t h e daught e r of E r n e s t and Grace
(Drake) Miller.
Mrs. Soper was a member of
St. Edmund's Church, a charter member of the Catholic
Daughters of America Court
Little Rose # 1300, the St. Edmund's Altar-Rosary Society,
and the Ellenburg Pioneer
Club.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Patricia
and Michael Lindsay of Willsboro; three sisters: Mae Durant
of Massena, Agnes Forgette of
Mineville, and Anna Shova of
Mineville; two brothers: Daniel
Fish of Massena, and Edward
Fish of Mineville; and several
nieces and nephews.
Her husband, Wilbur "Bub"
Soper, died September 11,
1962. One sister, Helen Lamotte, and three brothers, Raymond Miller, Fred Fish and
Francis Fish, also died before
her.
Calling hours will be held on
Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9
p.m. at the E. F. Drown Funeral Service in Ellenburg Depot.
A Mass of Christian Burial will
"be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Edmund's Church in
Ellenburg. Burial will be in the
parish cemetery in the spring.
Memorial donations may be
made to the Ellenburg Depot
Fire Department or the Willsboro-Reber Fire Department.
Allen W. Clarke

ZEPHYRHILLS, FL — Allen
W. Clarke, 81, of Crown Point,
died Thursday, December 17,
1998, at Zephyrhills, Florida.
He was born at Crown Point on
J a n u a r y 8, 1917, the son of
Ward and Mary J a n e (Allen)
Clark.
Allen was the owner/operator
of A & R Clarke Rubbish Removal of Crown Point, and a
Naval veteran of World War II.
He is survived by two daughters: Cindy Clarke and companion Duane Estes of Crown
Point, and Wendy and Scott Ingleston of Crown Point; three
sons: Randy and Donna Clarke
of Crown Point, Arthur Clark

Leander L. Macey
CROWN POINT, NY — Leander L. Macey, 78, of the Lake
Shore Road, Crown Point, diedThursday, December 17, 1998,
at the Fletcher Allen Health
Care, Burlington, VT. He was
born a t Morrisonville, NY, on
March 30, 1920, the son of
Fred and Rose (Sidney) Macey.
Leander was a retired employee of Republic Steel Corp.
Mineville, and a v e t e r a n of
World War II.
He was a member of 4th degree
Council
Knights
of
Columbus, Ticonderoga, Elks
Lodge 1404, Ticonderoga, and
the American Legion, West
Plattsburgh.
He is survived by his wife,
^Juliette (Demers) Macey; six
sons: Anthony Macey, Reginald
Macey, Ivan Macey,
James
Macey, David Macey and
Roland Macey; four daughters:
Bernadette P u t n a m , Elizabeth
Duval, Carlene Cowen and
Doris Mazurowski; one sister,
Evylena Fournier; 25 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.
A son, Roger Macey, died August 5, 1998.
There will be no calling
hours. A Mass of Christian
Burial will be celebrated Monday, December 21, at 10 a.m. at
the Sacred H e a r t Church,
Crown Point, NY. Burial will be
in the Sacred Heart Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be

and Rescue Squad, Crown
Point, NY.
COFFEY — A Mass of Christian
Burial -for Eleanor R. Coffey, 73, who
died Thursday, December 17, 1998, at
the CVPH Medical Center, was held at
11 a.m. Saturday at t h e Church of the
Assumption in Redford. The Mass was
celebrated by the Rev. Phillip T. Allen,
pastor, and was concelebrated by the
Rev. John Crable. A reflection was given by her son, Michael Coffey. The
b e a r e r s w e r e Randy Carter, John
Gould, Norm Beauchemin, Art Pellerin, Harold Ryan and Mike Tedford.
Burial will be in Independence Cemetery in Saranac in the spring. The
O'Neill-Redden-Drown Funeral Home
in P l a t t s b u r g h was in charge of
arrangements.

was celebrated Saturday, December
19, 1998, at St. Peter's Church for
Mabel C. S m a r t , 83, of Montcalm
Ave., P l a t t s b u r g h , who died Tuesday,
December 15, 1998, a t h e r home. The
Rev. John Yonkovig, pastor, celebrated the funeral mass. T h e pall was
placed by t h e b e a r e r s ; t h e crucifix
was placed by S h a r r o n Schneider;
a n d t h e gifts were p r e s e n t e d by
Shirley Davis and Leonard S m a r t .
B e a r e r s were J e r e m y Schneider,
M a t h e w Davis, Louis Davis, Tom
Chapkiewicz, Terry S m a r t , and Gary
Schneider. Burial took place in St.
P e t e r ' s Cemetery, w h e r e t h e Rev.
Yonkovig r e a d the committal prayers.

NEW YORK — President Clinton and Independent Counsel
Kenneth Starr were selected
Time magazine's Men of the Year,
the magazine announced Sunday.
The decision was announced
the day after the House of Representatives passed two articles of
impeachment against the president.
"The news reinforced our decision, which we had been
wrestling with until the final
days," wrote Walter Isaacson,
managing editor of Time, in the
double-issue hitting newsstands
Monday.
Other candidates were Alan
Greenspan, John Glenn, Mark
McGwire and the Irish peacemakers. Isaacson confirmed rumors that Hillary Rodham Clinton had been a leading contender
for the magazine's honor.
"But at decision time it came
down to who, in the end, had the
•most impact on the way the news
actually unfolded throughout the
year," wrote Isaacson. He defined
the Man of the Year as "the person or persons who most affected
the news of our lives, for good or
for ill, and embodied what was
important about the year, for better or for worse."

Personal-injury accidents
GABRIELS — A crash injured four
people, two seriously, Saturday on
Route 86 in the hamlet of Gabriels.
Details of what happened were unavailable Saturday night.
The injured were taken to Adirondack
Medical Center, where Mark Snowman
was listed in fair condition, Robert
Sawyer and Patty Dagley were treated
and released, and Dan Jandraw was in
serious condition in the Intensive Care
Unit.
LOON LAKE — A collision between
a snowplow and an automobile injured
three people Saturday on Route 99 near
Loon Lake.
CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh
reported t h a t Erica and Elizabeth
Gould were treated and released, and
Tiffany Gould was still being evaluated
Saturday evening.
No further information- about the accident was available Saturday evening.
Felony a r r e s t s
CHAMPLAIN — A Scarsdale man
was arrested Saturday morning on federal bank-fraud charges after he tried
to enter the United States at the Champlain port of entry.
JohnT. Hajdok,51, was wanted by the
FBI in New Rochelle on two counts of
bank fraud, Chazy-based State Police
said.
He was turned over to the FBI in
Plattsburgh and taken to Clinton County Jail pending arraignment before federal magistrate Henry VanAcker.
P L A T T S B U R G H — Antonio Ray
Powell, 32, of Plattsburgh was arrested
early Saturday for felony unauthorized
use of a motor vehicle and aggravated
unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.
City Police (lid not release details on
the arrest Saturday night.
