Riegelsville Scouts set record for food drive
The holiday season became a little brighter for some local food
bank clients after Boy Scout Troop
127 of Riegelsville collected and
delivered more than two tons of
groceries, plus cash, toys and med-
ical supplies, during their 2011
Scouting for Food campaign.
The goal of the troop's annual
holiday food drive is to help support low-income families in need.
On Dec. 3, the Scouts distributed
paper grocery bags door-to-door to
homes throughout Riegelsville and
Finesville, N.J., plus local churches and the U.S. Post Office in
Riegelsville. One week later, they
retraced their steps, collected the
bags - now filled with food and
other items - and delivered them to
The Lord's Pantry at St. John the
Baptist Catholic Church in
Ottsville and Finesville Methodist
Church Food Pantry in Finesville.
The Scouts collected 4,610
pounds of food; in addition, they
received two cases of medical
nutritional supplement drinks (valued at $140), three large boxes of
new toys for children and $160 in
cash.
The groceries and other gifts
arrived at the Ottsville and
Finesville pantries just in time to
help a steadily-rising number of
low-income residents prepare for
the holidays. Together, these two
pantries currently serve a combined total of about 1,300 people
each month, a 300 percent increase
since the beginning of 2011.
The 2011 collection of 4,610
pounds is a new record for Troop
127. In their first Scouting for
Food project in 2008, the boys
gathered 2,350 pounds of groceries; in just four years, that
amount has doubled.
