The opening weekend of the season provided an ideal chance for local riders to accelerate their development and strive past their out-of-town rivals in what looms as a highly competitive season. A packed field of eager riders saw 23 junior riders compete alongside 32 seniors in what was described as a weekend of tight and gripping races. The event also marked the introduction of a new race format for the 2014 season, with the splitting of the senior division into Clubman and Experts. Strong local representation was evident with riders throughout the district converging at the developing Heywood track. Club President Peter Lovell paid compliments to the tireless enthusiasm of workers at the track. “I’m rapt how the development of the Heywood MX facility is coming along and the commitment being shown by the young lads in getting involved in track development and maintenance,” Lovell said. “The Club is still hopeful of hosting a round of the Western Region Series in 2015 and is looking toward support from the Glenelg Shire and other companies.” The chance to host a Western Region Series race will significantly boost the profile of the already growing racing community in the district and will bring over 250 riders and their support crews from around the State.. Upgrades to track design and improvements to the water system are among the leading changes to the track with the riders commending the significant improvements. The focus now turns to acquiring a scorer’s box and continuing the already noticeable improvements to the current track. The weekend’s results were led by the showcase event of the Experts Lites class, with Josh McLean winning the event with some impressive riding throughout the race. Hamilton rider Lachie Davis was runner-up while Steve Collins of Warrnambool finished third to round out the podium results from locals Kane Rogers and James Clay in a hotly contested competition.. Kade Lovell capped off a strong event with a 65 A grade victory and a third placing in the 85 Small Wheel. Portland competed strongly in the B grade equivalent of the race with Jake Campbell winning the event from Mitchell Johnson. The Clubman Lites was another field which Portland dominated with a clean-sweep of all the podium results. Michael Toohey won the event from Jay Kohlman while Dylan Anton finished in third. A similar result was achieved in the Expert Opens field with Ben Moore achieving a first and Dave McKean and Simon Parry rounding out the podium finishes in second and third respectively. Luke Alexander won the Clubman Open from Hamilton rider Jake Brown with Zach Hollis finishing third in the 85 Big Wheel behind Jarrod Reed and Tanner Lovell. President Lovell finished third in the Veterans from Hamilton’s Eddie Brown who won the event. Jett Lovell was runner-up in the Division One 50cc class and six-year-old Ethan Smith finished second in the Division Two race in the first ever race for the youngster in this division. The Senior Victorian Titles are set to be held this weekend at Horsham while the Junior Victorian Titles will be raced the following weekend with around 15 local riders expected to compete at the event. The Western Region Series will travel to Geelong on April 13 for the next race in the series. >^^/&/>/E^ DŽŶĚĂLJKďƐĞƌǀĞƌͲϴ͘ϯϬĂŵ DŽŶĚĂLJ͖tĞĚŶĞƐĚĂLJ KďƐĞƌǀĞƌͲϭϭĂŵdƵĞƐĚĂLJ͖ &ƌŝĚĂLJKďƐĞƌǀĞƌͲϭϬ͘ϯϬĂŵ dŚƵƌƐĚĂLJ͘ ΎĚǀĞƌƟƐĞŵĞŶƚƐĐŽŶƚĂŝŶŝŶŐ ƉŚŽƚŽŐƌĂƉŚƐƐŚŽƵůĚďĞůŽĚŐĞĚ ŽŶƚŚĞĚĂLJƉƌŝŽƌƚŽƚŚĞĂďŽǀĞ ĚĞĂĚůŝŶĞƐ͘ Dh>d/W>/E^Zd/KE^ ΎdŚĞƵLJdǁŽͲ'ĞƚKŶĞĨƌĞĞ ŽīĞƌĂƉƉůŝĞƐƚŽƐŽŵĞĐůĂƐƐŝĮĞĚ ƐĞĐƟŽŶƐŽŶůLJĂŶĚĂĚƐŵƵƐƚƌƵŶ ŝŶĐŽŶƐĞĐƵƟǀĞŝƐƐƵĞƐŽĨĞŝƚŚĞƌ ŽƌĂŶLJŽĨdŚĞKďƐĞƌǀĞƌ͕dŚĞ ^ƉĞĐƚĂƚŽƌŽƌĂƐƚĞƌƚŽŶEĞǁƐ͘ WůĞĂƐĞ ĐŚĞĐŬ LJŽƵƌ ĂĚǀĞƌƟƐĞŵĞŶƚŽŶƚŚĞĮƌƐƚĚĂLJ ŽĨƉƵďůŝĐĂƟŽŶ͘dŚĞKďƐĞƌǀĞƌ ĐĂŶŶŽƚ ďĞ ƌĞƐƉŽŶƐŝďůĞ ĨŽƌ ĞƌƌŽƌƐŝŶƐƵďƐĞƋƵĞŶƚŝŶƐĞƌƟŽŶƐ ŝĨŶŽƚĂĚǀŝƐĞĚ͘ WůĞĂƐĞůŝƐƚĞŶĐĂƌĞĨƵůůLJǁŚĞŶ LJŽƵƌĂĚǀĞƌƟƐĞŵĞŶƚŝƐƌĞĂĚ ďĂĐŬ͘ dŚŝƐ ǁŝůů ĂƐƐŝƐƚ ŝŶ ĞůŝŵŝŶĂƟŶŐ ŵŝƐƚĂŬĞƐ ĂŶĚ ŵŝƐƵŶĚĞƌƐƚĂŶĚŝŶŐƐ͘ tŚŝůĞ ĞǀĞƌLJ ĞīŽƌƚ ǁŝůů ďĞ ŵĂĚĞ ƚŽ ƉƵďůŝƐŚ ĂĚǀĞƌƟƐĞŵĞŶƚƐĂƐŽƌĚĞƌĞĚ͕ ŶŽŐƵĂƌĂŶƚĞĞĐĂŶďĞŐŝǀĞŶŶŽƌ ĂŶLJůŝĂďŝůŝƚLJĂĐĐĞƉƚĞĚĨŽƌŶŽŶͲ ĂƉƉĞĂƌĂŶĐĞ͘ĚǀĞƌƟƐĞƌƐĂŐƌĞĞ ƚŽŝŶĚĞŵŶŝĨLJdŚĞ^ƉĞĐƚĂƚŽƌͲ KďƐĞƌǀĞƌWĂƌƚŶĞƌƐŚŝƉĂŐĂŝŶƐƚ ĂŶLJ ĐůĂŝŵƐ Žƌ ƉƌŽĐĞĞĚŝŶŐƐ ĂƌŝƐŝŶŐŽƵƚŽĨƉƵďůŝĐĂƟŽŶŽĨ ĂĚǀĞƌƟƐĞŵĞŶƚƐŽƌĚĞƌĞĚ͘ůů ĂĚǀĞƌƟƐĞŵĞŶƚƐĂƌĞƐƵďũĞĐƚƚŽ ƚŚĞĂƉƉƌŽǀĂůŽĨdŚĞKďƐĞƌǀĞƌ͘ KADE Lovell finished first in the 65 A grade and third in the 85 Small Wheel event at the Heywood MX track PICTURE: ELLY HATELEY 140309eh38 last weekend.
