Shop honoured
for serving the
perfect cuppa
The art of serving the perfect
afternoon tea is alive and well
on the east coast now that a
Lowestoft tea shop has been
presented with a prestigious
award for the seventh
consecutive year.
Flying Fifteens, on Lowestoft
seafront, has been given an
award of excellence by the Tea
Guild for its perfectly
prepared brews.
The shop is the only tea room
in Norfolk and Suffolk to win
one of the coveted certificates,
which are given after secret
visits by professional tea
tasters and are held by
Claridges, The Ritz and Bettys
of Harrogate.
Owner Diana Knight said she
is very proud to have been
given the award for the last
seven years. She opened the

tea room in 1996 with no
catering experience and now
visitors come from far and
wide to sample the selection of
more than 50 different types of
tea and infusion as well as
homemade cakes, scones and
meringues.
She said: “It is the attention to
small details, such as the
particular type of cheese we
use for our cheese on toast and
the carefully blended teas,
which makes people want to
come back. It’s all part of the
afternoon tea experience.”
! Flying Fifteens, on The
Esplanade, is open weekends
from 10.30am to 4.30pm.
From May 23, the tea
room is open every day but
closed Mondays, except
Bank Holidays, until mid
September.

Coastal dwellers from across the
country were among those who
gathered in Happisburgh at the
weekend to mark the 10th
birthday of a leading lobby group
and to thank the people of the
Norfolk clifftop village for their
years of support.
An evening meeting was held in
St Mary’s church on Friday to
formally celebrate the Coastal
Concern Action Group’s decade of
operation, followed by various
events through the weekend. The
actual date of the anniversary fell
last month.
Speakers
included
local
representatives
such
as
Happisburgh tea shop and
homeowner Di Wrightson, North
Norfolk District Council’s coast
protection
engineer
Brian
Farrow, Happisburgh district
councillor Clive Stockton and
north Norfolk MP Norman Lamb.
But some of the most striking
words came from those who had
travelled to Norfolk from afar,
Lively evening
of great music
and reflection
This celebration of life and love in
words and music, presented in a
review-style show, launched the
West Acre summer season.
The entertainment also marked
the fourth anniversary of the

including from Sussex and Kent,
where communities have linked
up with Happisburgh – in
particular CCAG – for help and
support in their battle with
coastal erosion, rising sea levels,
climate change and government
inaction.

Brigitte Bass, from Romney
Marsh in East Sussex, who is a
member of the Defend Our Coast
Association (DOC), said: “We have
come along to show our
unequivocal support for the
people of Happisburgh and CCAG.
“They have been instrumental in
The theatre’s two pivotal
figures, Issy Huckle and Andy
Naylor, gathered together fellow
readers Lesley Mardle and Ian
Sandell and musicians Eileanora
Ni Charthaig, Tap Robinson and
Ivars Galenieks for a lively
evening of amusement and
reflection.
With an early reminder to
“gather ye rosebuds while ye
may” the readers covered a broad
spectrum including excerpts from
Under Milk Wood and poetry by
the new Poet Laureate, Carol Ann
helping us set up our own group –
they set the framework for us and
for many other communities.
“We simply could not have done
what we needed to do for our own
communities without CCAG.”
Roland O’Brien, from the Save
Our Selsey campaign in West
Sussex, said: “Being here is about
showing support for each other
and to express our thanks for the
huge amounts of support we have
had from Happisburgh and CCAG
over the years,”
CCAG co-ordinator Malcolm
Kerby said he was “deeply
indebted” to those who had
travelled to Norfolk for the
weekend.
“It’s of great help to everyone in
Happisburgh to hear first hand
from other communities who have
been catapulted into the same
situation of potentially losing
their homes with no social justice
– it’s direct evidence that we not
alone.”
! The village’s church rooms will
be open today for anyone wishing
to find out more about CCAG.
Duffy, punctuated with all sorts of
snippets of fun and philosophy.
The musical interludes were
equally
wide-ranging
with
Eileanora (keyboard and vocals)
leading the trio in numbers such
as Making Whoopee and Danny
Boy.
With some hot boogie-woogie
and cool guitar and bass playing
the music complemented the
readings to add to West Acre’s
burgeoning repertoire.
