Our passion for the Gold Coast is reflected in our powerful local
reporting, stunning photography and compelling magazines. We
believe that across the six days of publication, the Gold Coast Bulletin
touches the entire community with its diversity and breadth of content.
The Gold Coast is an extroverted and confident community and
we endeavour to reflect that in the pages of the Bulletin, capturing
the dynamic entrepreneurial spirit that has made the city famous
and the flamboyant individualism that makes it such a fun place to live
and work.
The Coast is the fastest growing part of Queensland and is still
a magnet for southern migrants, international visitors and literally millions
of holidaymakers every year. From our pristine surf beaches, iconic
skyline, kilometres of waterways and canals and sophisticated restaurant
and entertainment precincts, the Gold Coast has so much to offer all those
who come here to stay or play and the Bulletin aims to do the same.
Each day we report the best of local news and sport together with
the most relevant national and world events. And every day has
a special highlight.

GCB & SUN INSERTS
Higher readership & retention
Size specifications
There’s no question that catalogues and brochures are important marketing tools, but
in order for them to perform effectively they need to be read.
Research shows that consumers actually read newspaper-inserted material more
thoroughly and with greater attention than letterbox-inserted material – in fact,
newspaper-inserted material is 33%* more likely to actually be read in comparison.
All inserts must conform to maximum and minimum sizes shown as follows.
General notes on the size-specification tables below:
1. Any single sheet (at max size) under 180gsm must be folded neatly in half.
2. Four and eight-page tabloid products must be quarter folded. Prior to acceptance,
all other tabloid products must be inspected to determine whether a quarter fold is
required.
3. The fold must be situated on the longest side of the product
i.e. Insert 200mm x 180mm wide – 200mm must be folded (spine) of this product.
4. The substance weight (gsm) should increase as the insert increases (eg: height and
width, not number of pages).
Furthermore, 85%^ of all newspaper readers indicate that they read the advertising
inserts in their paper.
Consumers perceive inserts in publications such as newspapers to be more targeted
and less annoying than non-personalised mail dropped in letterboxes. Furthermore,
inserts are expected as part of the purchase, are less likely to be considered ‘junk mail’
and create a perception of a better quality advertiser.
Packing identification
1. The printer must ensure that all inserts are free from “set-off” and that the ink is dry.
2. Inserts must be kept as flat as possible at all times, with tight folds, and free from
rolled edges, wrinkles or other distortions.
3. Inserts are to be turned in 50s, 75s, 100s, within a bundle, so that the height is
between 75mm to 100mm.
4. Bundles may be strapped from top to bottom (not around spine), single tie only (the
wider the strapping the better). The tension of the strapping should not in any way
damage the bundle.
5. The use of a sturdy piece of cardboard at even intervals throughout the stack will
help keep the inserts flat, and avoid shifting during transportation. Gaps between
bundles on the pallet should be kept to a minimum.
6. Outside edges should be vertically even and protected by cardboard. The inserts
should be stacked, so that they do not protrude beyond the limits of the pallet.
7. If the pallet does not have a solid, smooth base, a piece of wood or a substantial
piece of cardboard should be placed over the pallet before stacking.
8. A solid piece of wood, the same dimensions as the base pallet, should be placed on
top of the stacked bundles, to prevent strap damage.
9. The pallets should be cross strapped four ways.
10. The pallet should be wrapped in plastic, or shrink-wrapped, for further protection.
Not only is an insert in the Gold Coast Bulletin or Sun Community Newspapers
more likely to be read and retained, it will also benefit from an association with
mediums trusted and valued by the community, thus positively influencing the credibility
of your advertising.

operations, a reasonable variation in colour between colour proofs and the completed job is to be
expected. When variation of this kind occurs, it will be considered acceptable performance. You must
provide high-resolution images suited to the web printing process. Gold Coast Publications Pty Ltd is not
liable for images printing pixelated when this is caused by customers providing low-resolution images.
Gold Coast Publications Pty Ltd is not responsible for any colour shift that occurs in conversions from
RGB to CMYK colour modes. Gold Coast Publications Pty Ltd print to PANPA Specifications developed by
PANPA’S Technical Advisory Group (TAG). The Technical Advisory Group consists of representatives from
member newspaper publishing companies with technical backgrounds and expertise in pre-press,
and press processes. The complete technical print and reproduction specifications can be found at:
http://www.panpa.org.au/
Please note:
Mono ads are accepted on the website via the News Ltd delivery system. Complete
advertisements supplied in other graphic formats such as JPG, TIF or EPS will
not be accepted. PDFs generated from within an application (eg. Adobe Indesign,
Illustrator) must comply with our specifications. Postscripting the file to Acrobat
Distiller with the Gold Coast Bulletin’s job options loaded is the preferred method.
Sizing:
Some advertising and editorial content is reduced by 2% at page output to allow for
the page folio. Advertising supplied with dimensions other than specifications may be
anamorphically adjusted to fit to allotted space.

INTRODUCTION
Message from the Editor
Results speak for themselves ...
So, it’s no surprise that savvy advertisers are sitting up and
taking notice of the latest readership results for Sun Community
Newspapers.
The latest independent Roy Morgan Research Centre survey reveals
the free Gold Coast Sun and Tweed Sun newspapers now reach some
273,000 readers each and every week ... up 20,000 year-on-year.
For the Sun, this represents unmatched penetration in one of the
most vibrant and dynamic markets in Australia.
For you, our valued advertiser, it represents a logical choice in your
bid to capture the hearts and minds of your customers.
We admit that our winning formula has been a simple one: remain
geographically focused, personal, relevant ... and speak to people in
a language that they understand.
This ensures our free newspapers are warmly embraced by our
readers, and it gives you, our valued advertiser, the best possible
chance of your message being heard.
In recent years, our beautiful Gold and Tweed coasts – home to more
than half a million people and a holiday playground for many millions
more – have developed into several distinct communities of interest.
For this very reason, the Sun now offers a network of 5 localised
editions, giving our advertisers great flexibility to home in on those
markets, to reduce wastage and to achieve greater value for their
advertising dollar.
As our valued client, you can rest assured: our team of trained
executives will strive to deliver highly-effective and cost-efficient
solutions to your needs, whether through traditional newspaper
display advertising or other innovative marketing initiatives such as
inserts or wraps.
As a valued reader, you can also rest assured: we will continue to
uphold the values and beliefs which have been the foundation of
our success; we will continue to cover the issues that affect you, no
matter where you live across our great city.
It’s great to be working with you …..

Inserts
There’s no question that catalogues and brochures
are important marketing tools, but in order for them
to perform effectively they need to be read.
Research shows that consumers actually read
newspaper-inserted material more thoroughly and
with greater attention than letterbox-inserted material
– in fact, newspaper-inserted material is 33%* more
likely to actually be read in comparison.
Furthermore, 85%^ of all newspaper readers indicate
that they read the advertising inserts in their paper.
Consumers perceive inserts in publications such
as newspapers to be more targeted and less
annoying than non-personalised mail dropped in
letterboxes. Furthermore, inserts are expected
as part of the purchase, are less likely to be
considered ‘junk mail’ and create a perception of
a better quality advertiser.
Not only is an insert in Sun Community Newspapers
more likely to be read and retained, it will also benefit
from an association with a medium that is trusted and
valued by the community, thus positively influencing
the credibility of your advertising.
For further information on inserts, refer to page 20 of
this Media Guide.

9. TRADE PRACTICES ACT 1974
The Trade Practices Act, which came into force on October 1, 1974,
forbids 'misleading or deceptive' conduct in trade or commerce and
'false representations' in the supply or promotion of goods and services. Heavy penalties have been imposed for breaches. All advertisers and advertising agents are advised to study the Act carefully, in
particular Sections 52 and 53. The primary responsibility for ensuring
that advertisements comply with the Act rests upon the advertiser
and the agency submitting the advertisement for publication.
10. PROSTITUTION ACT 1999
The Queensland Government's Prostitution Act of 1999 restricts the
advertising of licensed brothels and prostitution services. Part 6,
Division 4 of the Act prohibits:
• Advertising of prostitution services in a form that is descriptive of
the services being offered.
• Advertising that contains statements intended or likely to induce a
person to seek employment as a prostitute.
• A provider of prostitution services from holding out, or causing
to be published an advertisement that states directly or indirectly
that the service provider's business is connected or associated with
'massage services'. Gold Coast Publications Pty Ltd reserves the
right to refuse the publishing of Adult Services website addresses.
Any advertising of prostitution services must be in an approved
form as decided by the Police Commissioner of Queensland or the
Prostitution Licensing Authority of Queensland. An advertiser who
does not comply with the above conditions is likely to commit an
offence under the Act. Gold Coast Publications Pty Ltd reserves the
right not to publish advertisements that may not comply in full with
both the intention and letter of the Act.
11. REAL ESTATE AND MOTOR DEALERS
Gold Coast Publications Pty Ltd abides by the Property Agents and
Motor Dealers Regulation 2001, and Gold Coast Publications Pty Ltd
expects its advertisers to comply with these requirements regarding
false and misleading representation.
12. THERAPEUTIC GOODS ACT
All advertisements for Complementary Healthcare Products (other
than devices) submitted for publication must comply with all aspects
of the Therapeutic Goods Act and Regulations, the Trade Practices
Act and other relevant laws. Approval numbers (where applicable)
must be submitted with copy, including relevant approval numbers
for editorial copy submitted for advertising features. Gold Coast Publications Pty Ltd reserves the right to omit advertisements in breach
of the Code.
13. TRANSFER OF ACCOUNTS
In the case of the transfer of an advertising account from one accredited advertising agent, during the currency of an advertising order, both advertising agents shall immediately inform in writing the
newspaper concerned. Accounts will only be transferred or accessed
by agencies with the expressed written permission of the client in
question. Gold Coast Publications Pty Ltd reserves the right to ask for
documentation in this regard.
14. INSERTS
While every effort will be made to publish inserts as ordered, no liability can be accepted for misplacement or omission. The publisher
does not guarantee the level of response associated with an insert.
The publisher reserves the right to abort insertion of product under
specifications if it disrupts production. All other Publisher's Conditions as specified apply.
15. COPYRIGHT
All material produced and/or published by Gold Coast Publications
Pty Ltd in electronic, printed or other format is subject to copyright
and may not be reproduced in whole or part without the express
permission of the publisher. The advertiser assumes all responsibility
for attaining copyright permission for any material not produced by
Gold Coast Publications Pty Ltd.
16. INTERNET ADVERTISING POLICY TO COVER ADVERTISING
FOR INTERNET SITES
The policy on Internet advertising is as follows:
16.1 General, Aggregated or Portal Sites
• These sites are welcome to advertise in our newspapers in news
pages or the relevant 'Internet Services' or ’Internet Classifieds’
classification within classified pages.
Classified Web sites:
16.2.1 • These sites include any publication, electronic or otherwise,
that seeks to act as a medium between buyer and seller or two
parties of potentially common interest regardless of the publication's
business model. Classified web sites include sites where the product
and/or service listings from entities not controlled by the publisher
forms more that 25% on the site in total by delineation of content
and/or functionality/purpose.
16.2.2 • These sites may advertise in news pages or in any of the
following classifications:
–'Internet Services' in the general classifieds
–'Real Estate Internet Services' in the Real Estate liftout
–'Careers Internet Services' in the CareerOne liftout
–'Motoring Internet Services' in the Carsguide.com.au liftout
16.2.3 • Subject to clause 4.3, these sites may advertise in the
appropriate classification where the ad in question relates to a
specific product or service and conforms with clause 4.2 and clause
6 of this policy and clause 17 of Gold Coast Publications Pty Ltd
Publisher's Conditions.
16.3 Client Sites:
16.3.1 • If a client is advertising just their site then those
advertisements should appear either in general news or in the
relevant 'Internet Services' section of the classifieds. For example,
an advertisement advertising a client site, where the site has jobs
on it, is not an employment advertisement, and therefore should not
appear in an employment section.
16.3.2 • If a client advertises their site as part of a classified
advertisement where the purpose of the advertisement is to advertise
a good, service or opportunity other than a website, url address
or email address, the client may place the advertisement under a
classification other than the relevant 'internet services' classification,
provided that 75% of the overall advertising space of the proposed
advertisement consists of information other that the advertiser's
url address or email address. (For example, in an advertisement
designated for the employment section, the subject matter of the
advertisement must be appropriate to the classification and the
url address or email address can take up to no more that 25% of
the overall advertising space, if the advertisement is to appear as a
classified advertisement under the 'employment' classification).
16.3.3 • Client sites do not include pages from sites that can be
categorised as Classified sites as previously outlined. These sites
can be identified as page extensions where the host forms part
of the address. Site extensions with their own specific url address
are acceptable where no mention is made of aggregated on-line
classified listings.
16.4 Email Address/Web Address:
16.4.1 • With the exception of Adult Services sole operator
advertisers and the instances outlined above, the inclusion of url
addresses/company details is acceptable in all areas of the paper
subject to the publisher's terms and conditions.
16.4.2 • For url addresses in classified advertisements the following
rules must be followed.
16.4.3 • The url must form part of the normal address details on the
advertisements, which must include alternative methods of contact,
usually telephone and mail address or telephone and email address.
16.4.4 • The url must take up not more than 25% of the volume
of any display or lineage advertisement in classified columns as
per clause 3.2.
16.4.5 • The url can be the general url of an aggregated or classified
site but must not be a page url for an aggregated or classified site,
if the address is within the classified columns, other than 'Internet
Services' or 'Internet Classifieds'.
16.4.6 • Gold Coast Publications Pty Ltd reserves the right to refuse
to publish an advertisement in the classified columns, other than
'Internet Services' or 'Internet Classifieds', when it believes that the
advertisement is not a true classified advertisement (e.g. job, home
or car for sale) but is merely an advertisement to 'drag' readers to
an internet site. This should be read together with Clause 17 of Gold
Coast Publications Pty Ltd publishing conditions.
16.4.7 • For Adult Services we do not publish web address or details.
16.4.8 • The Queensland Police Powers and Responsibilities
Act 2000, the Classification of Computer Games and Images Act
1995, and the Classification of Films Act of 1991 have various
prohibitions on publishing an advertisement or notice in which
'objectionable material' is promoted or available for online access.
'objectionable material' may include but it is not restricted to
advertising run from time to time on the advertising site.
16.5 Gaming or gambling sites:
16.5.1 • Section 164 of the Queensland Interactive Gambling (Player
Protection) Act of 1998 prohibits the publishing of advertisements
promoting games of skill or chance in whole or part where their
player interacts with the site in return for a reward dependent in
whole or part of skill or chance.
16.5.2 • The exception to this ruling is where an intergovernmental
agreement exists within a jurisdiction with like legislation or the site
is licensed by the Queensland Government.
16.6 Sites of Other Publishers:
16.6.1 • In the case of a print competitor, if our newspapers will
not carry advertisements for the print product, then those same
newspapers will not carry advertisements for a similarly branded
online product.
16.6.2 • Where a print competitor owns, either partially or fully,
an internet site that is branded entirely separately from their print
products, then that site will be treated like any other online site and
advertising and advertising placement will be in line with all other
aspects of the Gold Coast Publications Pty Ltd internet policy.
16.7 Application of Guidelines:
• An ad will be deemed to be an ad for an internet site when
the aggregate content of the ad relating to the web site exceeds
25% of the ad's make-up, either in space or in reference across all
areas of our publications.
16.8 Denigrating Copy:
• Gold Coast Publications Pty Ltd reserves the right to reject copy
that denigrates our own products. Copy that promotes the attributes
of the publication without comparison to our own publications,
generic or specific, is acceptable.
17. CLASSIFIEDS
The newspaper advertising classification system exists for the
benefit of the readers and advertisers alike. Readers are easily
able to find the information they are looking for while advertisers
can be easily located by the readers they are seeking. Requests
to advance advertisements out of the prevailing sort policy or to
place advertisements ‘out of classification' (e.g. place a car ad in
Careerone.com.au) diminish the utility of the classification system
and thus denigrate the product an advertiser may be seeking to
advantage. Accordingly, Gold Coast Publications Pty Ltd will not
knowingly false sort or otherwise dilute the purity of its classification
system. Where sufficient market demand exists, new classifications
can be opened to suit the needs of groups of advertisers at Gold
Coast Publications Pty Ltd’s discretion.
Advertising containing any of the following elements will be
considered career advertising, and therefore must be placed within
the Classified Careerone.com.au section.
• Lists a specific role, or roles.
• Outlines suitable candidate criteria.
• Gives any indication of remuneration.
• Provides contact details (in relation to responding to
a position/required criteria).
• Supplies a timeframe in which applications must be received.
In addition, any brand advertising would also need to provide a pointer
to the Careerone.com.au listing.
18. ONLINE TERMS & CONDITIONS
Every advertiser and advertising agency who lodges an advertisement
for publication (Advertiser) on a web site operated by Gold Coast
Publications Pty Ltd. (Publisher) agrees to the following conditions.

the agreed price shall not be reduced.
18.1.3 The positioning or placement of an advertisement is at the

format of advertisements across the web site. Publisher will
endeavour to notify the Advertiser of any such changes. Publisher will
not be liable for any costs, expenses, losses or damages suffered or
incurred by an Advertiser arising from Publisher’s failure to publish
an advertisement in accordance with Advertiser’s request.
18.1.6 If Publisher has quoted a rate to publish a specific quantity of
advertising over a specific period and a lesser quantity is submitted
for publication within that period, then what is published within that
period shall be costed at whatever rate is necessary to generate the
expenditure which would have been incurred had the full agreed
volume been published.
18.1.7 Publisher may head an advertisement Advertisement whenever required by law or whenever it considers it appropriate, for any
reason, to distinguish it from other types of content.
18.1.8 Publisher has the right to amend these terms and conditions

in relation to any failure of telecommunications services or systems
which affect the receipt by Publisher of an advertisement or the

any site except for any made expressly in writing by Publisher.

35
18.2.3 If creative is received after the relevant date and results in
a campaign being delayed, the publication of the advertisement will be
considered to have commenced as of the date on the insertion order.
18.2.4 It is the Advertiser’s responsibility to arrange and manage
re-directs with third party ad-servers and provide such third party
with the creative and lead time requirements. Publisher will not
compensate clients for campaigns which are affected or delayed in
any way by third party adserver redirect problems. Publisher may at
its absolute discretion remove any redirects from Publisher’s network
which are delayed in serving advertisements.
18.2.5 All click-through URL’s must enable the browser’s back
feature to allow users to return to Publisher’s website.
18.3 Credit and GST
18.3.1 All advertising agencies are subject to the News Limited
“Commercial Credit Application For Accreditation Of An Advertising
Agency” (“Accreditation”). If an agency does not comply with this
Accreditation then the News Digital Media or News Limited Credit
application is applicable. The terms and conditions associated with
theses applications are available within the accreditation application.
If applicable, advertising agencies which are subject to News
Limited’s “Rules Governing Accreditation” will receive a commission
discount of 10%.
18.3.2 All rates and charges contained in the insertion order are
quoted exclusive of GST. Publisher will issue a valid tax invoice in
relation to any supply of goods or services which is subject to GST.
18.4 Other provisions
18.4.1 Cancellation of any advertisement or campaign must be
received in writing no later than 21 days prior to the commencement
of a campaign in order to receive a 100% refund. Any cancellations
made after this time will be subject to a minimum cancellation
fee of 100% of the total cost of the entire campaign. Campaigns
cancelled at the request of the Advertiser after the campaign has
commenced will not be entitled to a refund of any unused portion
of the campaign.
18.4.2 The insertion order is valid for 72 hours from the time it
is provided to Advertiser. Publisher cannot guarantee the order is
fulfilled unless a signed copy of the insertion order is received within
that timeframe.
18.4.3 These terms and conditions form part of the insertion order
and are binding on Publisher and Advertiser once the insertion order
is signed.
18.5 Warranty and Indemnity
18.5.1 By lodging material including electronic material or data for

with the Publisher, Advertiser warrants that the material complies
with all relevant laws and regulations and that its publication will not
give rise to any claims or liabilities against Publisher, its directors,
